“Revved up like a Deuce” is one of the leading candidates for most misheard lyric of all time!
I’ve been wondering what the reaction would be if Brad & Lex didn’t have a preference for lyric videos….
There is a RUclips video where Springsteen explains where the lyrics came from. In it he states something to the effect of this cover they changed the lyrics to reference a certain feminine hygiene product. And since the cover was more popular than his original the listeners have spoken about which version was best. LOL.

One of those 1970's anthems I used to listen to on my transistor radio I got for Christmas as a kid. It is chocked full of slang from the era. A real classic.

The guitar solo in this song turns my ears to pudding! Starts out slow,ethereal,and gradually builds with intensity! It's definitely in my top 5 favorite guitar solos! Great pick!

This was actually written by Bruce Springsteen and released on his debut album "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." in 1973.

Every song Springsteen and Dylan write that are done by other artists are way better. Springsteen sounds like he’s taking a dump when he sings and Dylan is a nasally yenta.

This, for me, was the original, the one that I remember from my early adolescence. I didn't learn until decades later that it was a cover. And then, after hearing the original, I'm grateful to MM, because they took a fairly lazy song to a completely different place. Amazing.
One of the greatest, most overlooked guitar solos of the era. Great tone, takes you somewhere different sonically but still within the "vibe" of the track and is, overall, is a master class in solo construction and building tension right up to the refrain of those haunting unison bends at the end followed arguably by the most impactful lyric and vocal...."Mama always told me not to look into the eye's of the sun".
Even as a hard rock / metal guitar guy, this one always still makes my greatest solos list

I would had liked to do a cover of this back in the 70's, in this style but was not like a gigging band could reproduce all the keyboard and synth sounds without deep pockets.
btw... you do know this was written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen in '73 but Manfred Mann's version is a lot better imo.

Yes that was an awesome guitar solo. And I definitely like this version the most. Personally, I'm not a Bruce fan. "We are the World" is probably the only time I've liked him. Bruce does my most hated song of all time. "Going Down". OMG I HATE THAT SONG. Even I could have written a dumb song like that. It has maybe 10 words. LOL. I'm exaggerating, of course.
The tone on the solo, the bends, the arpeggios, the picking dynamics, the effects... it really is a flamethrower solo
It makes sense Brad likes this. It was written just based off any word that rhymed, not meaning. It's a Bruce Springsteen song, but I do like this version better. Manfred Mann changed the lyrics slightly. In Bruce's version he says something more logical. If I recall the lyrics off the album jacket, (and they do align with Bruce's interest in cars), the lyric video should have said *'cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night.'* But I saw him twice live, and both times we thought we clearly heard him sing *'Revved up like a deuce coupe for a run out in the night.'* We noticed because we'd struggled singing that lyric in the car, and that version sounded so much more singable. So maybe he switched it because it flowed out of his mouth more smoothly than on the album. It wouldn't be the first time a hit had that happen. A Deuce Coupe is the kind of car Harrison Ford raced against in the classic film '73 American Graffiti. That's why there's the line about 'Some go-kart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe outside.' Hot Rods fanatics like clean cars and avoid rain.
Actually I thought the Springsteen lyric is “cut loose like a goose”. But then again, I’m on the minority side of Bruce’s “Mary’s dress waves/sways” interpretation as well.
Harrison Ford was driving the black 55 chevy that rolled at the end of the movie. Had to Google that since I didn't even remember Harrison Ford in AG! My wife is from the central valley, the street scene in that area was EPIC.
Deuce would be a ‘32 ford coupe. John Milner drove the deuce coupe in American Graffiti.

Lex saying it makes her think of Yes and Rush shows she’s really seeing some of the groupings in classic rock and the intricacies within a broad genre.

For the most part the lyrics are about Bruce Springsten's teenage years playing baseball. "Madman Drummer" is his friend Vini who was a drummer, "Indians in the summer" is the baseball team Bruce played on. "in the dumps with the mumps" is a reference to being sick and depressed because the team was doing poorly. "pumps his way into his hat" was about Bruce not taking his baseball cap off at home. "with a boulder on my shoulder" references to try to make the team not suck but it being an impossible task like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill. "tripped the merry go round" is a baseball term that means the pitcher kept walking batters. "this very unpleasin sneezin and weezin" is about one of the kids having allergies.

I'm pretty sure "pumps his way into his hat" is not about a baseball hat. Springsteen said as much on VH1 Storytellers. It's a bit more graphic than that.
@@Seabee_Camper That may be. I am basing my interpretation on a biography I saw of Bruce were they talked about him playing baseball and interviewed his Aunt. She said Bruce never took his hat off, he had a teammate with allergies who really annoyed Bruce, his team was the Indians and Bruce being depressed because he was the best player on a bad team.

Just like this song, I prefer Manfred Mann's version of Spirits in the Night by Bruce Springsteen. They also did a good cover of Bob Dylan's Mighty Quinn.

Great reaction guys. Love Lex's excitement, especially when they started playing chopsticks on the keyboards. Brad just looks so intense and always so supportive of Lex. "Just listen to this verse then you can go back to your thing" you guys are so adorable. Wish I had grandchildren but since I don't I will just have to adopt you two for my own. This is definitely a nostalgia type of song Put you in deep thinking of the past or present time or what’s to come. One of the most underrated rock songs of all time! The beat and switch up of the beat is what really makes it interesting
Before radio stations had heavy rotation of the same 50 songs, we used to call the local radio station and request songs. This was one we always wanted to hear when hanging out doing nothing….

And request lines... It was rare to get anything but a damn busy signal! When it did ring through, I felt like I won the sweepstakes. But then, sometimes the egotistical DJ wouldn't even bother playing my request!! Grrr...

Takes me back to my childhood in rural North Texas. We lived in a town with about a thousand people with a little burger joint and this song playing constantly in the jukebox.

Manfred Manns Earthband is still going on tour, sometimes even for free. So is the singer, Chris Thompson. One of the best live-gigs, I believe ...
Chris Slade (drums) was seen with AC/DC when they recorded Thunderstruck in the studio promo video .Colin Pattenden (bass) had a recording/rehearsal studio in the Shepperton Studio complex. Peter Cox (vocals) joined up with Richard Drummie and later became the band Go West.

Manfred Mann made their first record in 1963 and the band is still touring. They were huge in the UK in the 1960s and the Earthband also knocked a number of hit albums in the 1970s. Manfred Mannn was also famous for showing Keith Emerson how to play the Moog Synthisiser and lending one to him.
Only Rick Wakeman and Manfred knew how and Rick would not show anyone so he pocketed the £6 Session Fee as he did with "Space Oddity" by David Bowie in 1968.
Eventually the studio engineers got it :)
Manfred Mann and Manfred Mann's Earth Band are fundamentally different projects.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Manfred Mann, Chapter 3 and Earth Band were all part of Manfred's developing vision so one evolved from the other.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band and The Alan Parsons Project just ruled their times. Best prog rock bands ever. Listen to Mann's "No Kwazulu". Mind-blowing.
One of the guitarists for this band was a guy called Steve Waller and he quite often performed as a guest with a pub band called Hershey and the Twelve Bars. They played regularly at a place in SW London called Ye Olde Leather Bottle back in the early 80s when I was about 20yrs old. When Stevie was on stage the band was transformed into an amazing band. Manfred Man’s Earth Band released some wonderful music too. Sadly Mr Waller is no longer with us.
My Gen-X parents always said that this song takes them back to a time when you actually had to have TALENT to make good music, and that there was room for extreme creativity within the music genre...

Bruce wrote a song with Patti Smith called "Because the Night" worth checking out. Her best work, imo, was on her album Horses featuring the song "Gloria".

"Because the Night" was on Patti's album "Easter". Side one of that album is a fantastic trip!
"Because the Night" is a great song and was quite a departure from Patti's style and sound.
Just read this on Song Facts Springsteen talked about this song in detail on an episode of VH1 Storytellers. A lot of the references are personal, to include people he knew or had met on the Boardwalks, or had grown up around, or were just direct personal references to himself:
"Madman drummers bummers" - Vinnie "Mad dog" Lopez, the first drummer in the E Street Band.
"Indians in the summer" - Bruce's little league baseball team as a kid.
"In the dumps with the mumps" - being sick with the mumps.
"Boulder on my shoulder" - a "chip" on his shoulder.
"Some all hot, half-shot, heading for a hot spot, snapping fingers clapping his hands" - Being a "know it all kid growing up, who doesn't really know anything."
"Silicone Sister" - Bruce mentions that this is arguably the first mention of breast implants in popular music - a dancer at one of the local strip joints in Asbury Park.
He wrote this song in his bedroom, primarily using a rhyming dictionary. Or as Bruce put it, "the rhyming dictionary was on fire."
That's Bruce Springsteen spittin' on the paper. Very few lyricists like him- besides Dylan. He wrote this around '72, which gives you an idea how ahead of his time he was. Manfred covered this in '77, which makes Lex' comment ironic that she would like to see someone cover it.
All credit to the Boss for writing the song... but his version is almost unlistenable once you're used to the production values of this one.

This song is just the sound of my childhood.
This one was easily one of my favourite songs as a child. The vibe was PERFECT.
It always reminds me of returning home from Nova Scotia in the summer and watching the trees fly past and pretending its somehow a music video for this track.

Manfred Mann took Bruce's song, completely reworked it and made it their own. This is one of the best songs of the 70's. I just can't seem to get tired of it. Such a BRILLIANT piece of production and musicianship. Don't know if you guys have done it yet, but check out the band 10CC and their song "I'm Not In Love".

I was 17 in September 76 when I first heard this. Seeing you react to it as new just takes me back. It shows that a lot of timeless music has been made, because good music lovers like it immediately. A classic.
This band is one of those come and go bands--they'd have a hit, disappear (more or less) for years, then re-appear again. One of their first singles was "Do Wah Diddy" in 1964. Blinded By The Light was released in 1977, with only a couple of hits in between, the most popular being "The Mighty Quinn" in 1968. Each of them unique, and most well appropriated covers.
"Wrapped up like a douch"... my friends & I had all thought THAT was what this song was saying during that whole "wapped up like a duce" line... LoL. Let me say that it definitely confused the hell out of us for a good while; until someone finally got ahold of something with the actual lyrics written on it and then we finally learned better what it was they were actually singing about and we corrected that particular little lyrical misunderstanding

Wow I used to hear this on the radio in the winter. It reminds me of Indiana winters and listening to the radio on cold clear nights. Looking out the window across the snow covered streets during a gentle snow fall hearing Manfred Mann singing this on the local radio station. Great memories.

Manfred Mann had a string of hits in the sixties. During the seventies he used the name Manfred Mann's Earth Band and released a few great albums, but had less success in the hit charts.
This song was originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen on his debut album. Three of MMEB's biggest hits in the seventies were covers. The other two being "Spirits in the Night" (also by Springsteen) and "The Mighty Quinn" (Bob Dylan). The latter had already been a hit single back in 1968.

Yeah, Bruce was a better writer than performer, IMHO. Manfred Mann helped Bruce by making this a hit.

@@jonm7888 No, I have not, no desire. However, I will say that I used the wrong term. Performer has connotations I did not intend, Singer/musician might have been more appropriate. Remember, this is just MHO, and your mileage may vary.
Their first hits in England were very different. Late '63, must've been, they debuted with '5-4-3-2-1', an unapologetically simple car-themed lyric and propulsive track that just moved the playlist along nicely; the follow up was 'Doo Wah Diddy', a straight from the blues/R&B playbook bit of lovelorn fun and games that was even more irresistible to young audiences at the time. Both were helped along by original singer Paul Jones' strong, bluesy vocals and pop-idol presence. The "proggy" evolution came later.

This is what Rock and Roll does. It takes a little blues and then shoots out in a thousand different directions. It literally took every band in the 60's and 70's to define Rock and Roll. You should listen to the next song on the album... Singing the Dolphin Through. It's even better.

I LOVED this song growing up in the 70's. I had it blasting through Techniques Head via Rockford Fosgate 500w amp in my car. My dad was out doing some lawn work and he said he could hear me long before I turned the corner and into the driveway lol. OH! Those were the days.

The Midnight Special version is sooooooo good, they were such a great live band. For years I thought that was a recording, but alas they were just that good live.
"Classical tie-in" with Chopsticks. I guess it's a classic! Makes for a nice rhythmic counterpoint in this song.
The sound of this song crackled the sound waves throughout the 70s and is still all over classic rock radio today. It will never get old. It’s just sounds too damn good!

This song is a cover. The original was written and performed by Bruce Springsteen. It was released on his album "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" very early in his career in '73 about three years before this was released. It was more of a straight forward rock song while this version has a lot of 70's disco elements in it. I remember the first time I heard this in '76 or so. I actually heard this version long before I heard Springsteen's version as this was a huge hit and I don't think I have ever heard Bruce's version except from the album, never on radio.
This was the lead track from "Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ", the first album by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. It was songs like this that led critics to dub Springsteen "The New Dylan" because, while it *sounds* almost like a stream of consciousness performance, there is a story there, as there is in most Springsteen tunes.
The Manfred Mann version mixes up the order of the lyrics and leaves a few to be sung as a counterpoint to the main lyric line toward the end, but it all there.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band had a few hits in the sixties including a cover of Bob Dylan's "Quinn The Eskimo", but this is perhaps the band's biggest single hit. It was on the radio all the time for what felt like the entire year.
I saw them live in the seventies. One of the best gigs I have ever seen. Very very good. Modern music will sometimes sound similar to these oldies because good music leaves an impression. Many musicians have been brought up listening to this sort of stuff. Great reaction thanks.

I know a lady, who is a You Tube drummer, did a cover of this song, she did the full version song, showing all the drum work in this song. She goes by sina- drums on RUclips, she was the drummer for a band in Germany, the band she was in, was the opening act for Manfred Mann and Glen Hughes, she got to meet all of the after the show, they joined her and her band, she said they were all really down to earth and great people.
The best version by miles of this tune and probably my favorite song from this era. Wich I throughly enjoyed then to now.👍
