- We took three of the most powerful tablets on the market and pitted them against each other in 3 main areas- user interface, web browsing, and document sharing. Check out our results, and learn what tablet is best for you.
Most sensible, thought out comparison I've seen. And probably the only one to come to a helpful conclusion. Well done
Excellent comparisons. Very balanced and unbiased in your presentation. Keep it up!
You should also mention Surfaces' USB port, MS Office, and Remote Desktop. This transforming your Surface into a full fledged PC. It's a tablet with little bit of fun and a serious productivity machine
It is possible to configure you printer using the touch interface on the Microsoft Tablet without reaching the desktop. Use the touch enabled PC settings choose devices and then choose your printer. If it is not found by default choose the entry in the lower part of the search list. This will open help where you are guided to the printer selection. This way it is easy and you never have to go through the control panel.
That was the Surface RT. It's desktop side can only use IE, Office, and the preinstalled desktop stuff (mostly settings and that).
The Pro which will be out soon will run full windows 8 and can do everything a desktop can do
This was incredibly useful to help me decide on what I want. thank you so much for posting this. You've earned another subscriber.
This is by far the best and most balanced review I have ever seen on RUclips. Subscribed.
For cloud printing on Nexus 10 I like PrinterShare. It allows me to make changes to what I want to print when browsing in Chrome after I hit print. Even shows preview of what I am printing.
People, the windows classic view was meant for use with the keyboard with a track pad. Not so much with the touch, turning the surface into a laptop.
One of the best reviews of the tablet lineup. I appreciate your thoroghness.
The surface can run ANY flash site, but at the moment MS is doing a "whitelist" of flash sites that it trusts, which grows with every update they do. You can manually add flash sites you visit often if they aren't available. It does take some slight tech savvy, but you can find a tutorial online.
Wish you would have tested snappiness of the 3 OS's opening apps and web pages
Could u review the reading experience on those devices.. how easy is it to get any book u wish to read and how is each tablet customized for a good reading ecperience?
I am obviously giving up my iPhone 5 for something but am looking to have fun and be able to costumize don't care if jailbreak or whatever so wich would I get surface is out of the question
Have you used it much? I was a bit shaky at first too, but it really grows on you.
I have 2 iPads and I love them but I'm afraid if I get the surface ill be confused because im so used to the ipad . should i buy the surface just to try it outI
You can make the desktop on the Surface just as big as you want. You want the buttons and other items humongous? Just set it so from the display settings.
Eliot thank you for your review. It helped a lot! But the one question no one has answered is which is best for school? Homework is done online through websites like smart work norton and web assign net. My laptop is too big to have during class. it takes up the whole desk so i can not write. I have never had an apple product so i only know how to get around a pc. Which do you think best? or what other questions should i ask myself? Thanks again. GO GIANTS!
Cailen I just bought the ipad 4 for my son but I have no clue how to use it I want to charge it before have you any tips to help me x
i can't believe he is the only person i have ever seen to call the ipad customizable! everyone complains about it not being but i never had that problem because if you want it to it is but its already perfect out of the box!
Pretty good comparison, but seriously... what's with the hands? I think I saw more of your hands waiving around than I did of the tablets.
The three tablets are very good but is up to every one which one do you prefer but all are good
What blue screen are you talking about? You can change the background color... im confused.
Very nice and looked like the reviewer actually used the tablets before reviewing unlike others.. can you help me decide whether to buy nexus 7 or ipad mini. This is going to be my first ever tablet as size 7 or 7.9 seem really portable unlike 10 inch ones. I would be using it for web browsing and facebook games. I don't really care about hard core games. Will nexus 7's display size be good enough or should i shelve extra bucks for getting extra 1 inch screen space??
@Shinji Ikari The first concept for a tablet/touch-computer came around in 1972, I think.
Hey man I want you to know that this is a great video. I appreciated the information and insight.
You said the work around for flash for each tablet. Microsoft Surface also have a workaround. It is due to Microsoft's "Whitelist" of flash supported websites. You need to add the website into a data file somewhere, but it is doable.
It depends, they could have used a kind of plastic that feels better for the back of the Nexus 10, but for the Galaxy SIII they use polycarbonate plastic, which is known to be very hard to crack or break, even with large bending and deformations.
I loved how you weren't biased at all :D
How can I tell that to sound polite... I don't wanna doubt about your honestity, but have you tried the MS Surface? I've done, and I think that in some ways Surface is better than the other two, and design&UI is one of the strengths.
This was a well done and unbiased review. Thanks for posting!!!
@readwriteTV
The reason that they have the traditional desktop is because you can connect a mouse to the surface. The keyboard covers have mousepads and it a usb port so you can connect a mouse. It all works out because if you are doing things that you need the desktop for, you would probably want a mouse anyway. If you are doing things in tablet mode, you don't want a mouse and you don't need one
6:50 one of the biggest "DRAWS" is the native flash support??
how did he not include display information?
Can You take note using the Nexus 10?
Pretty good, but failed to mention Office Student/Home being present on the RT as standard.
Why was there a document printing / sharing test? These devices have clearly been defined as media consumption devices, not for content create / productivity.
You can also side load Flash to any 4.1/4.2 devices for native flash, however this is not guaranteed to work in the future.
Printer part makes sense, people still want to print stuff, flash is nice, but there are other things that should have been hit on, problem is it would have been a bit onesided towards the surface.
Could you do a more indepth review? I don't feel like this covered everything...
Good review, I wanted to share with you the utility "Printopia" for Mac. It's a nice way to be able to print to any printer from an iOS device. The perquisite is that the iOS device has to be on the same WiFi network as the printer and the Mac you have the utility installed. This is one way to get around having to buy a "air print" printer.
All i can say is that I've owned the latest 2 generations of the iPad only to sell them after using it for only a month or so because I couldn't do much with it other than view things with a pretty screen. I now own a surface that I use all the time and it does what I want. Its not about which is better overall , its about which is better for you as an individual. Use what you like.
Surface looks awesome, but then I think, Is there an app for that?
does pages on the ipad support exporting to word format?
The premium build quality on the surface is second to none. not to mention the functionality of the keyboard with the stand and with a desktop mode.
yeah. I agree... Do you know if minecraft works on the Surface RT???
The surface pro is a far better machine than the RT. On the Peacekeeper test, my pro scored 1687 with internet explorer and 3650 with chrome. Granted it's probably not fair to compare the Pro to an iPad. I'd love to see a surface pro vs macbook air comparison.
does the nexus 10 doesn't have flash support? i think samsung has flash support.
So wat does the surface lock screen look like again??
This is useful; thank you. Many of us have habits while we are talking that don't translate well onto a video. In this case, the speaker gestures with his hands a lot, something doesn't translate well on the screen. I would try to avoid doing that next time.
why didn't you compare then against the iPad 4?
Nexus 10...document editing with Google Docs, freedom of customizing and downloading anything. You can also plug in your flashdrive (I already use this feature on my galaxy nexus)
I can't remember...does Firefox's mobile app support flash player?
Why compare them with the old iPad? I want to see a comparison with the iPad 4...
wth the ipad 4 was released before this video and is the competitor to the nexus, why not include it?
Like what? What things can you do with a full USB port, which you can not do with a micro USB?
If you use the Surface's desktop a lot you should connect a USB mouse or use the trackpad of the touch cover. The cursor makes the usage of the desktop much easier.
Easy to touch type of the nexus 10? (traditional type)
@readwriteTV use desktop mode for surface ie browser, no errors should pop up.
You can, Surface has full printer support from Windows Update. Most USB and network printers work seamlessly.
Well what dissapoints you? I am probably getting one for christmas and hearing whats wrong would be nice
Surface seems to come out on top here:
-Most useful interface
-Best printing and sharing capability
-Flash on many websites (by default) - although browser score was diminished by the video codecs test
Add the keyboard cover and you go into productivity overdrive.
Good review. Why? Because it covers the stuff people actually want to DO with the devices, rather than comparing price or hardware specs etc.
How does the Surface work with music ?
can i suggest you ave on screen name pop up as you cange device moments i am tinking your still reviewing one but you canged .
Don't need to purchase any app on the nexus to play flash. Just need firefox and go to the android archive for flash on adobe's website and you can run the last flash version made for mobile devices on it.
I would agree with you in that it is a very balanced review, however I feel like the A6x chip is a huge improvement and on some benchmarks is over 2x faster. For me the iPad 4 offers much more than people are making out.
Have you tried Google Docs? It's pretty good. Since it's browser based it can't be as customizable as Word (Yet?) but I love the instant access anywhere and the collaborations and it's free
Flash works in both browsers, it uses a whitelist so any site on the list will work. You can modify this list yourself if you wish.
Historically it's been harder to monetize, but that's because the App Store had such a big head start and larger install base that it was naturally going to be that way.
I don't have accurate numbers as of today but I would be willing to bet that the gap is closing.
can u show us a video about facebook vs. google plus?
If you get it from a Microsoft Store, they have a 30 day, or 15 day, return policy. You could do so without penalty, but the choice is yours. I bought the Surface and found that for what I do, the iPad was the superior option.
What tablet do you all think would be best for college textbooks and other college applications.
Yes but the Samsung Series 7 uses an OS which wasn't designed to be used with your fingers. I've seen those tablets that try to use Windows 7 and it simply doesn't work. Trying to drag a window around a desktop with your finger is near impossible.
Apps and screen resolution?
He just said that's his preference on a tablet. There wasn't a single bias comment made during the video as it comes down to what a person is looking for in a tablet.
well it does have a new processor... so i would think that would kind of matter a bit... might make it a little faster? i mean idk just throwing out ideas here
Compare the other tablets with the iPad 4
desktop mode on the surface is think to be used with a OGT adapter with a mouse and a keyboard...
U forgot to tell that incoming notifications will also appear on the lockscreen of the iPad, so its not just the time and swipe to unlock. and also, when double pressing the home button u'll get music control and theres an option for a photo slide show on the lockscreen.
I have an ipad, I know if you double press the home button, it show the recently opened apps, the key word is 'opened' not 'open', multitasking means you can do more than one thing at a time, you can only listen to music in the background, while doing one other thing, never two things on the screen at one time, that's multitasking, but thanks anyway. Now I do love my ipad, but Windows 8 is simply remarkable.
Do you even own a Surface or just Reading of a chart? MS ClearType is amazing. I'd say text on Surface is on par With Ipad 4. although, you can zoome even more inn on the Ipad (but honestly, the surface can zoom far enough and still have crisp text, any more... nobody has any use of having a single letter on the screen..
Surface has some Things that could be better, but what they've done, they've done right - did you have a look at the video I posted a "link" to(just add the youtube etc etc):)?
I have an ICS Motorola Xoom and it supports flash. Maybe its just Chrome that doesn't?
question, since windows 8 rt tablet is not the full version of windows 8, will the tablet run java?
anyone know when the nexus 10 is coming out in the uk?
You can have flash on nexus 10 when you download it in the play store
can download the flash apk for nexus 10 and use the firefox browser
I have a Lumia 920 and a Surface. It's an amazing combination, and they're both fun to use.
They do have the touch cover for the surface.
kingsoft office, openoffice, libreoffice, calligra, office suite pro, etc, etc they can all replace powerpoint, i haven't used powerpoint for over 6 years now and I don't miss it at all.
whats the difference?
They are all solid tablets. I got the iPad b/c I've been using Android for so long I just wanted to try them out for a while. While it's not perfect, it's very good, and I can't say enough on the build quality and screen quality of the iPad 4th gen. That said, I do miss the extra customization with Android, but they always tended to slow down my experience. Does anyone know where I can try out a display model of the Nexus 10? Like at a retailer? thanks
why doesn't he mention the available touch and type covers
Whyyy is Surface not avaiable in Switzerland right nooow.....
A number of things:
It has a brand new processor (A6X) which has twice the speed in terms of graphics and power.
Better front facing camera that's now HD
Better Wifi and 4G reception
New Lightning connector.
Granted it's a minor upgrade but the tablets which they're comparing the iPad to are brand new, so they should use a brand new iPad as well
@harshbarj You do know adobe announce it will no longer support Mobil flash
Who prints from their tablet?
Doesnt the surface have a mouse in the key board
If the others don't need a rather expensive add-on to reach a modicum of functionality then it shouldn't be the case for the Surface. Although the desktop view SHOULD be interacted with via peripheral input devices, the UI should also make allowances for the fact that the primary input will be touch-based.
Why ipad 3 and not the new faster ipad 4?
we need about 2 years, for hi-res internet. every raster image are pixelate, but ipad and nexus ask internet for hi-res needs. but fonts looks are great!
He used benchmarks and didn't really give much of an opinion at all... this is the most balanced tablet video I've seen. The iPad 3 and 4 are virtually identical save for the USB connection and a barely noticeable bump in CPU...
