  • Three topics mashed together. Trying to narrow down the final purchases of the year and put a cap on 'em! Buying through Yahoo Japan Auction, Yahoo Japan Flea Market, and Mercali. Recent purchases and diversifying my music collection a little more.

    Peter there are worse things in life to be addicted to and spend money on, and you've amassed an enviable, sizeable and certainly valuable collection sir 🙂
    Back in Black is one of those records that you just must have. It's one of life's utter classics, and one as you know, I bought when I was 16 and have played ever since 🙂
    Glad you enjoyed Electric. The Cult can be a bit of an acquired taste - for instance before their live set last month a roadie came on burning some sage (I think) all over the stage presumably to rid it of any negative energies!! Yep, that's The Cult! I'd recommend getting their best of (Pure Cult) before diving in too far.
    I've been quietly shopping myself this week, picking up 3 Heep albums (Fallen Angel and Abominog on vinyl, and Wake the Sleeper on CD) as well as Thick as a Brick by Tull and another Jonathan Hultén record - The Forest Sessions. I'm really getting into them 🙂 I've been dropping serious "I'd quite like The Dreaming by Kate Bush for Christmas" vibes as well. Fingers crossed!

      Burning Sage, huh? Not rosemary? I miss sage. I used to enjoy going out to the semi-arid regions of western Canada to photograph the landscapes, and the scent of sage was everywhere.
      For the 2024 vinyl tag, a lot of people mentioned Back in Black for the question about an album everybody has. No, I didn't need Rumours or Thriller. But Back in Black was an album I knew I still needed. And it does sound great! I will listen again this coming week. Once more, thank you so very much!
      Heep's Fallen Angel is rather good! I got a CD with a ratty fold out... inlay card? Insert? What do you call the printed material in a CD? I'd love a better copy, but the disc itself is fine. Wake the Sleeper is really good! I want to do a video about my ten favourite songs of the Bernie Shaw albums or simply a review of the Bernie Shaw albums. I've had them all on my phone since June last year. I'm not familiar with that Johnathan fellow, but I will give him a listen later. Good luck with Santa!

    Nice update with action-packed auction stories :) I have to admit I once won an auction through auction sniping, but it was a record I wanted to buy as an Xmas present for my dad so I had tomresort to desperate measures. I was surprised at how good some of the songs from the new Purple album were. Nice to see some prog rock too. Good luck at the auctions! :)

      Thanks for watching the long video! I just won an auction for Chris Squire's Fish Out of Water expanded edition CD. I was watching and updating during the last few minutes. I had to counter bid twice near the end. But I got it! Managed to get an Armored Saint album too, though I only bid once and wasn't thinking too seriously about it. But no one else bid, so it's mine, too!
      Yeah, that new DP album sounds very fresh. I feel every time there's a line up change, they do a really good album!

    Question: "Do I make short videos?" Answer: "Rarely!" Like Brian, I was a regular ebay vinyl buyer, but have stopped since price listings and shipping have gone up. My vinyl purchases are at physical locations these days, all locally owned/small businesses. On the flip side, I've been selling my CDs on my own ebay page pretty successfully for a little over a year. All that music is stored electronically and backed up. Kathleen Edwards I do enjoy. Lastly, I've had The Cult's Electric for years. Three words: Love Removal Machine! As always Peter, great stories on how these releases came your way.🎶😎

      Hello, Ed! Oh, the electronically backed up CDs! I did a terrible thing about 12 years ago. I decided if I hadn't listened to it and wasn't about to listen to it, it could go to Disk Union (music store). I purposely didn't back up anything because I didn't want to listen to it later and wish I still had the physical copy. Well, a number of those albums have been mentioned in VC videos and people express how much they enjoy those albums. So, guess who is regretting that decision made 12 years ago!
      I like the idea of buying from small businesses. But for me, that's not easy. There's so much that I want that's just not available, and there's so much available that I'm not sure if I want it. I typically say, " I want that album. Where can I get it for the best price." And I order. These auction interactions have been mostly just a fun way to see about possibly adding something to my collection that I probably wouldn't have bought for full price. If the bidding goes too high, or I get snipered, I'm okay.
      Love Removal Machine, eh? I will play that one specifically!

      @musicisajourney I definitely get that mindset: a deal is a deal! And I agree that online auctions can provide more options, especially for me when I'm focused on a particular artist or band to fill in some gaps. Oh, and play Love Removal Machine LOUD!

    Hi Peter!!! cool and fun stories..... glad to hear you got ACDC's "Back in....." back in your collection, it was also my first music encounter with the Young bros!!! had no idea about Yahoo Auctions, ket's see what they have to offer, but shipping fees might be an issue. I have got the chance to win some Ebay auctions and also losing some (merciful fate) because of those "snipper guys" and it really sucks, lol...... Yeah you really need the Cult's "Sonic Temple". cheers and be well.

      @@cristianosorio2517 Hi, Cristian! About the auctions, I’ve been doing them domestically because ordering from Discogs means big shipping fees. If it’s in an auction or flea market in Japan, it’s much cheaper. I don’t need to worry about currency exchange rates either.
      Most stuff I bid on was just for fun. If I really want something, I watch right to the end. I won an auction the other night for a CD. There were a few more bids near the end, but in the last minute thee were no challengers.
      Alright, I will put Sonic Temple on the hit list for next year. I got a video of yours to watch tomorrow or Thursday. See you in your comments section!

    Hey Peter. I’ve streamed White Horse a few times. I liked what I heard but need to give them a listen again. I’ve only had positive experiences with quality of my Japanese albums. The grading is much stricter and more consistent than here in North America. I don’t think yahoo auctions are a thing here. I’ve done a little eBay but the shipping is so expensive it only makes sense if you’re buying expensive albums or large quantities - neither of which I do often. I’ve checked out a few auctions on “what not” but most sellers are in the US, so shipping becomes an issue again. I have recently had some success with vinyl groups on Facebook hosting auctions. Although, the snipers have caused me to lose a few good albums. Once the Canada Post strike is over, I should have some winnings on the way. 😃 In fact, you made me aware of one of the albums. Matt Mays - nice!

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney  2 месяца назад

      Yeah, shipping always spoils the fun. When I buy from the Mercali flea market, postage is included, so 600 yen is 600 yen. With Yahoo Auction, postage is extra. So it bites when you think you made a good score for 900 yen but you have to pay 280 or 350 yen extra in postage.
      I used to order from Discogs a fair bit, but with increased shipping costs and a poor exchange rate, I have to really want something before I pay the extra.
      I heard from Darryl the Northern Vinyl Guy that Canada Post was going on strike. Strikes are one thing I don't miss about Canada. They are super rare over here. You were in China, right? Any problems with strikes?
      I'll definitely pick up at least one more Whitehorse album. I don't think I need all of them, though. I just got a Kathleen Edwards album in through the door. It's not the one I really wanted, but it was much more affordable (used off the flea market) and I checked it out on RUclips. I think both Rob and Glen were saying she was really good. I'll sure get one or two more of her albums!
      I hope the strike ends soon!

    Hey Peter. Nice video! Back In Black! I really like the new Deep Purple. I feel Steve Morse was getting a bit stale on the previous 2 albums, and that Simon brought a new fire to the band, and I like his playing quite a bit. Eloy is great. Starcrawler is killer! Cheers

    • @musicisajourney

      I agree with you about Deep Purple. I think Steve is great but the last two albums I didn't feel there was much that stood out. Don Airey sounded like he was on fire and making up for Steve. Simon McBride sounds great! And his playing fits right in with the band on this album.
      Eloy, I gotta have more. Starcrawler are pretty cool. I'll be talking about them more soon!

    I still haven't listened to White Horse. I was a frequent eBay user back in the day, but the last-second outbidding killed me. Also, shipping is insane, so I only use Amazon Canada now for online orders. But, I still ocassionally look at eBay to see what's out there.

    • @musicisajourney

      Hi Brian! I think it's been hearing about all you vinyl collectors going crate digging. I thought, "I couldn't do that. I buy what I want when I want it." But recently I've been seeing all these CDs on Yahoo Auction because I was selling some trading cards. I started looking at the titles and thought it might be fun to bid on some. If I could get a used album in good shape for much less that on Amazon, it might be a fun way to expand my collection. Basically, I'll bid up to a certain amount, and if the bidding goes over that, I'm out. So, I don't put a lot of "need" on those albums. I did, however, really want Chris Squire's (of Yes) solo album, Fish Out of Water. And so I stuck through the bidding to the end and got it!
      Playing around on the auction and flea markets has allowed me to buy a lot more albums I normally might not have dared pay full price for. And since it's domestic shipping, it's not that expensive.

    TBH I wasn't aware of yahoo auctions. If I buy online it's usually through Discogs, eBay (not as much these days) & Red Eye Records. I'll only get online stuff if it's shipped within Australia. Otherwise it's stupid expensive for the overseas shipping to here. Having a diverse collection I find keeps thing fresh, because you always have something to play depending on how you feel. Some days you just don't want your head caved in by punk rock & you want some chilled electronic ambient stuff. Back In Black is great, but I'll take any Bon Scott era record over it. I like Badmotorfinger, but for me the early Sub Pop stuff has a punk rawness in those Sabbathy riffs that I dig. Cheers...Ben

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney  2 месяца назад +1

      Hey, Ben! I know what you mean about the shipping. We can get a good variety of stuff in Japan because there are so many niche markets here. But I still have to order from Discogs sometimes, and the shipping is what takes all the fun out of it. Even from Australia, it's not cheaper really. Otherwise, I'd love to add a handful of some of all these cool bands you talk about to my collection.
      Diversity is nice. I love a good metal or prog album, but a lot of newer ones sound very similar to others. So, branching out is a way to keep things fresh.
      I'm a Bon Scott fan, too. His voice, his style. He was such a unique vocalist. Brian sometimes sounds like Dan McCafferty of Nazareth.
      Badmotorfinger is good. But when I checked out the album after and the album before, I felt clearly the earlier one was more what I wanted to hear. So, I'll work my way backwards from here.
      By the way, for my Around the World contest entry for Stylus Meets Vinyl's contest, I mentioned an Aussie band that I had to buy on download because there was no CD. They only have a four-song EP out on Bandcamp, but it sounded really cool. I think you know of them. The 1980s?

    I've never used Yahoo Auctions, but I am painfully aware of auction snipers! I've lost so many great buys in the last 10 seconds of an auction. So much so, that I rarely participate any more. I prefer buying the record outright as opposed to bidding days and days, only to lose the item in the last few seconds. I bought way too many albums this year! My resolution is not to be so damn crazy next year. We'll see how that works out.

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney  2 месяца назад +1

      Hey there, Mark! I just won an auction for Chris Squire's solo album, Fish Out of Water. I stuck through to the end, watching and updating the page ready to counter any bids. It happened twice. But I wasn't going to let this one go. Other CDs, I usually just join the bidding for fun. I have a limit, and if the bidding goes over, I walk. But it happened a couple of times I just bid for fun, and then no one else did! It's been a fun way to add some more variety to my collection without paying full price on Amazon. It's also allowed me to buy a lot more albums than I would have had I stuck to Amazon. Oh, my!
      Yes, I start each year thinking I'll buy only two or three albums a month, and by the end of January I have a dozen new ones, and by June I've gone way over my quota. It makes me wonder how much money I'd have in the bank if I didn't buy so much music... Good luck to us both in 2025!
