The contact cement that you get from the hardware store is the same stuff made by the same company but it’s just a bit thicker so it doesn’t spray quite as well.
I’ve been using it for 45 years as well but in the leather and construction business so, usually with a brush or a roller.
But after your last video where you pointed out that you don’t have to clean the sprayer between uses… I now spray it because I’m venturing into upholstery.
Mineral spirits will help it release… Acetone will kind of dissolve it but can be harsh on various surfaces and materials.
But here’s a secret…. If you want to thin it or completely reconstitute dried cement… Get you some Toluene. You can get it just about anywhere you can get mineral spirits or acetone.
You don’t even have to worry about letting the glue dry in your brushes. Just soak them for a few minutes in the toluene and the dry glue completely dissolves or reactivates.
Thanks for the videos… They’ve been tremendously helpful.

Hello Tim, You are so welcome! You know, now that you mention it. I am remembering back to 45 years ago, an uncle of mine use to thin out his contact adhesive with toluene. Maybe I need to buy some. Thanks pal! Please keep liking and watching!

I've just "overhauled a wf juki that had been tampered with. I'm at 70, master mechanic with no sewing machine experience.
When your in business, if it's a come-back, instead of making money, your loosing your labor ,and materials profit. Your glue is expensive, but it's not coming loose. Stay stuck to your ways in Texas. Cheers from Oregon.

Kick ass inflation, I'm getting pretty good at sawing all thanks to you. I have the glue gun and got some contact cement from Menards but it didn't really work on the foam. I did my sister's driver seat, not the best work but thanks to you I went for it. I really enjoyed unstitching the seat cover to get the pattern. My next task is to find that brand of glue. Once again thanks for your teachings.👍✌️

Hello Sisco, I love hearing good news like this. From what I understand reading from other commenters, there is a difference between contact cement and contact adhesive, I have only used contact adhesive for everything I do. I am so glad you are applying yourself to upholstery. Please keep liking and watching!

Good morning Richard. I was not able to find the contact adhesive at any of the big box stores. I did find contact cement, which comes with the red can instead of the blue can that you show. They are made by the same company DAP. Therefore, I didn’t take the chance. I went ahead and ordered the 5 gallon can of contact adhesive from Keystone brothers. Thanks for all your help!

👍👍 I'm old school I worked for a company called Advanced specialties putting vinyl tops on brand new cars in 1976 till 1979 for car dealers in Los Angeles we'd clean the glue off the paint with cleaning solvent but before that my daddy had me to use gas. car paint is gas proof so it works well ,I just don't like the smell of it I think cleaning solvent is the best that's my experience I'm enjoying your show Richard

I’m not an upholstery expert but I do know all contact adhesives are not the same. The key here is the Landau Top. That means it’s high temperature resistant when dry. Most contact adhesives will not tolerate the temperature of a dash panel in Texas in the summer Sun nor the roof temps. There are some identified as high temp but I’m not sure you can get those at a big box store.

Hello Felix, Thanks for hanging in there with me. For 43 years because I always had an upholstery shop, I always had a 60gallon 5 hp. 220v air compressor. Recently, I stopped using that because it was really too much. I replaced it with a 110V 21 gallon upright air compressor that runs my glue gun just fine. Please keep liking and watching!

      @oldschoolautoupholstery  4 месяца назад +1

Hello Mr, Thank you so much for saying so. My advise for pricing is, if the quality is good to very good, take that price and make it much higher. You will be surprised at how many people will agree to pay it. Different people have a perception of the value of money. When someone thinks it is too expensive, others will think it is cheap. Just sayin'. Check out: ruclips.net/video/WOuzM5UPqM4/видео.html Please keep liking and watching!

another question do you use more than one supplier over the others I have been looking at some ad it seams like non of them supply everything needed by the way I own a leather shop making hand made leather products and just dabble in upholstery, doing it as a hobby and just for friends, keep up the great work making your videos

Hello Mr, I mostly use Keyston bros. There are several locations in the USA and they ship. When I lived in Denver and Phoenix areas, I never had a problem finding upholstery suppliers. Just Google, "Upholstery suppliers near me". Upholstery can also give you a nice income. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello, i am making a bed cover for a pickup truck. I will be spraying this same contact adhesive to vinyl and sticking it to an aluminum sheet. I have one of those Harbor Frieght guns, but mine is an HVLP . What psi do you recomend for my spray gun using this same contact adhesive ? Love your channel !

Hello HHS, Thanks for hanging in there with me. For a large area, I would say, 35-65 psi is ok. I think you will do just fine with your bed cover project. Please keep liking and watching!
