It was recorded July-September of 1969, and Michael turned 11 on August 29, 1969. So we're hearing a 10-11 year old belt out those amazing vocals. Thank you so much for these videos!
Thanks for the info!
Wilton Felder played bass on I want you back
And Joe Sample played keyboards on there
Honestly I don't think there will ever a better kid singer than Michael was. Dude was insanely talented
Freddie Perren and Fonzie Mitchell were on piano Who wrote the song and were members of what would be called the corporation at Motown. The song was originally intended for Gladys Knight and The Pips
I read that the song was originally written for Jackie Wilson (before he founded Motown, Berry Gordy was a songwriter for Wilson).
I also read that the reason Jermaine was singing in such a high register, almost to the point of his voice breaking, was that the song was arranged in Michael's key.
The "let me live again" loop is Jermaine. He's the alternate lead singer in David Ruffin mode.
Thank you! David Ruffin is awesome, Jermaine had hi work cut out for him!!! Have you seen our Temptations episode?
@deepinsidethemusic I agree; Ruffin was the standard. I'll check out the Temptation piece. Nice job unpacking 'I Want You Back."
I
Stevie Wonder was related to the Jacksons. MJ started singing at 5 and soon turned 6.That was Tito beatboxing
The jazzy rhythm chording is beautiful
It’s incredible, right?
Michael 11, Marlon 12, Jermaine 14, Tito 15, Jackie 18 at time of recording.
Thanks!
I was just turning 13 years old in October 69, when l first heard this song. I’m still amazed every time l hear it. It took me a while to figure out who was singing that song. I first saw them perform the song on the Andy Williams Show on Saturday night 01/31/70.
It amazes us too!
Let's acknowledge all the brothers
Let’s!
That Jermaine part at the end was my fav part
He really kind of made the song him and Michael had amazing chemistry when they sang together
Mind blown! Don't forget Marlon.
And Jackie
Musicians are Louis Shelton on lead guitar, David T. Walker on rhythm guitar, Wilton Felder on bass, Don Peake plays the guitar that doubles the bassline, Gene Pello is the drummer, keyboard/piano parts are played by Clarence McDonald and Joe Sample, and while the conga player has never been identified, it *is* known that the tambourine player is Sandra Crouch. According to an interview with Don Peake (who played the guitar that doubles the bassline), Freddie Perren wrote out the arrangements.
Wilson Lewis Felder, the bassist and sax player from the Jazz Crusaders played the bass part on this song and ABC
I'm laughing at your guesses. Jermaine is the main secondary singer. Jackie sings the falsetto. Tito sings the low parts.
Only MJ, Jermaine and Jackie are in these early records
O bebe. Michael. Fantastico 😊😮
💜
This is pure talent at the earliest possible age. It was great. I’ve gotta find more from you guys.
Thanks so much! There’s lots more on the channel please subscribe!!!
One of the greatest songs in music history it such a deep and wholesome message about dont take someone you like for granted 😢
100% agreed! One of the greatest songs of all time! Ever!
Michael. O maior. Da. Musica. Ja. Crianca. King. ❤🎉
¡ SI !
Strings were pretty common at the time, all through 70s disco, and Michael's Off the Wall LP 80s. Not to diminish their contribution, but they do sound awesome!!
Mj. Ontem. Hoje e sempre❤
Si si!!!
You guys gotta do their other hits: ABC, The Love You Save, Sugar Daddy, etc.
Yes! Let’s !!!
I recall reading somewhere many years ago that the only members of the J5 on the intial tracks were Michael, Jermaine and Jackie because they were flown out to California first and Tito and Marlon came later with Joe and their voices were probably layered in later. I think this may be factual because when you listen to the background vocals you can clearly only hear Jermaine and Jackie and then Micheal adding some background vocals in the bridge.
Thanks for the info!!!
I hope y'all check out Torture by The Jacksons. It's an amazing song from 84 and one of the only songs to have all 6 brothers. Sounds like it could've been on Thriller. It's a great duet between Michael and Jermaine that was produced by Jackie.
Will do!
Just found you guys today... and i hope you keep doing what you're doing. Instant subscribe.
Welcome aboard! Thank you!!!
We love to do this and we’re having a great time !
Amazing!!
Tito, Jermaine and the keyboard player Ronnie Rancifer had to learn the song by the time they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show Dec 14, 1969. They did a recorded lip syncing of the song on The Hollywood Palace Show in Oct 18 1969. It was performed again live on American Bandstand on Feb 21, 1970.
Thanks for the info!
Their song ‘I’ll Be There’ would be a good song to examine deep inside.
CHILLY! Thanks! Agreed!!!
R.I.P. Tito Jackson.
💜
The early J5 were actually a cover band , session cats played in the studio Tito Jermaine Ronnie & Johnnie learned the songs afterwards and played them live
Thanks!!!
How do these guys get all of these recordings into their daw? To analyze the individual tracks? I want to do the same.

Yes, it is True that is me David T. Walker playing the licks or lead on the left channel on the song “I Want You Back". I enter in the fifth bar of the song!
Don Peake is doubling the bass line and Louie Shelton is playing the rhythm guitar.
I also perfomed on many J5 songs ...
Thank You for being interested in this music,
David T. Walker
AWESOME!
Wilton Felder on bass is correct, don't forget Joe Sample also from the Jazz Crusaders on piano. Thanks guys for blowing my mind once again, all the little (flaws) and (imperfections) are the intangibles that make this stuff uncopyable. Sadly, no Micheal, no Jackson 5, talk about THE MONEY!
I never knew Willey was a State Champion Air Piano Plater!!! Never stop doing this show!!!!
If you are interested in hearing an earlier MJ song...look up Big Boy on Steeltown Records. I hear Mike was 7 or 8 but he was holding it down !!
Will do thank YOU
Jermaine Jackson was on bass I guess. 🎸🎸
They didn't let him play on the records
The Funk Brothers played the studio recording for that song.
Lonnie Shelton who played the session lead guitar has videos on RUclips now explaining the making of the song.
We will look for it
This is going to sound weird, but I'm getting a barbershop feel listening to the isolated parts. Not just from the vocals, but it's like they are doing barbershop with the instruments too the way they interact with eachother - with some extra layers there too, like the strings almost sounds like they are from a 70's intro to a tv show.
Not weird at all! Thank you!
You can find this info for yourselves, but the musicians on all Motown recordings were Session Cats (Players).
Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael
The Jermaine part❤
We love Jermaine❤️💜❤️💜❤️💜
Do maybe tomorrow by the Jackson’s it’s amazing song ❤
Thanks! We will look for it 🤟🏻
According to Louise Shelton, he played the guitar, and Wilton Felder play bass.
THANKS!
It was Welton filter on guitar saxophone player for the Crusaders
Thanks!!!
Louis Shelton on the lead guitar. The Jacksons didn’t play on this song.
You guys really need break down CURTIS Mayfield if there's a hell below we're all going to go.
Ohhhhhhh! Thank you for watching, we will look for that one!
Tito and Jermaine was playing, Jermaine played bass
Just to let you know- if you put exactly that text that I wrote below here in the tags of your videos, it will automatically force RUclips to generate automatic closed captions, even if there’s a video with a lot of music (closed captions are very important for accessibility.):

Thank you!
Michael Jackson was born August 29, 1958. They lied about his age back in the day, making him 2 years younger.
CrayCray!
According to Wikipedia, it's Wilton Lewis Felder from the Crusaders playing bass.. ruclips.net/video/z91l_lPz1oc/видео.html
Jermaine was 2nd lead Falsetto was Jackie
THANKS!
The Jacksons weren't allowed to play on first three albums only sing.
Thanks!
It was Jermaine singing not Tito

Stevie wonder and the jacksons are cousins from their moms side
WHATTTT!?! Whoa. Thanks for the info!
The Jacksons played the instruments
