Oh, lordy. I can't even bring myself to watch to the end of this, because I just know he's going to put those buttons up to his eyes and smile. I don't know if I can deal with that; my head might just up and combust. Neil Gaiman, you terrify me in the most wonderful ways imaginable!
You're right. Wybie isn't in the book. But I heard Selick wrote Wybie into the movie so Coraline has someone to talk to (because in the book, she talks to herself a lot, or thinks to herself). And maybe they modeled him after Neil for the reason you previously stated.
Oh Neil Gaiman, :] He's wonderful, they way he talks about buttons as being used for cute little things...and yet the way he uses them in the movie in such a creepy way...I Love it! :D
Ooo this video is eerie. Reminds me of how when I was younger, kids on the playground would always talk about Coraline like it was the scariest film they'd ever see.
I laughed pretty hard. Very clever. I'm a huge fan of your work, especially your short stories. A Study In Emerald convinced me that you should be my favorite writer. 1602, Sandman and Coraline just confirmed it. Reading American Gods soon, hopefully.
I absolutely loved the film Mr. Gaiman. I'm a big fan of your work and while I've never read the book Coraline, I'm making sure to fix that. Great video. You should make more videos like this.
Yhea... I almost believed it was irrational until you pulled THAT smile. *shivers* Oh and I'll willingly admit that Coraline gave me nightmares when I read it. I was 21 at the time and I watched X-files when I was 7 without getting nightmares... just goes to show a good book can out-scare a TV show any day.
Neil Gaiman looks and sounds a helluva lot like Jeremy Brett here. But that was the best movie trailer EVER. Trailers should all be like this. Neil Gaiman just talking about nothing, lol.
You could do a coin trick with the buttons, since you learned it to write "American Gods"...or is there a great difference between coins and buttons on that? I deeply love your books. Thank you a lot for your work.
I hate how the movie was all "buttons, buttons, buttons"! Like, OKAY, we get it! I don't think the ghost children in the wardrobe even had button eyes in the book!
Glorious. Somebody compared Gaiman to Hitchcock. I think there's a bit or Rod Serling here too! Some network needs to snap Neil up as the host of their sci-fi/horror anthology series!
I actually have a phobia of buttons! It's called koumpounophobia, and it's actually quite common. I can't wear clothes with them on with out feeling uncomfortable, and I have to wash my hands after touching them. I don't even like saying the word! It's strange, though, I wasn't too scared of Coraline. This video kinda freaked me though.
@dontleademsomuch Me too, I'd love to see a Garth Ennis video promo on the finer points of 'The Boys' (with props of course) although the humorless RUclips thought police would likely go ballistic.
While I think Neil is a great writer, I don't think he's a very scary one most of the time, his stuff is often more awesome than horror. But his actual appearances, like here or with JoCo? Absolutely pants-wettingly TERRIFYING.
My heavens. He just exudes gallons of badass, doesn't he? And it's not just the coat. He could wear pink hotpants and a sweater vest and still exude gallons of badass. Actually, that sounds kind of interesting.
@Shiek927 really? have you read any of tims poems and short stories? tims stories are more sad and beautiful, like the melancholy death of oyster boy, neils stories are more creepie and stuff... I mean, none of tims movies are really scary i think they are just beautiful but thats just my opinion
Yeah, but just LOOK AT THEM!! How can you not see even the slightest resemblance? Their hair styles look kinda the same, and they both have black jackets on.
Nobody believes me when I tell them buttons are scary when I lend them my copy of Coraline. Three days later, and, well... (The background music in this just makes everything better/worse)
Oh, lordy. I can't even bring myself to watch to the end of this, because I just know he's going to put those buttons up to his eyes and smile. I don't know if I can deal with that; my head might just up and combust. Neil Gaiman, you terrify me in the most wonderful ways imaginable!
That was fantastically creepy-awesome. I'm going to check out the rest of his work now.
And now I have that phobia. Well played, Mr. Gaiman, well played indeed.
Neil Gaiman is awesome! I love Coraline, such a great movie! His smile at the end was bone-chillingly awesome!
I have koumpounophobia and was so hard see Coraline :( DMN! but i love the movie!
You are one scary, scary man, Mr Gaiman
Please carry on. :)
You're right. Wybie isn't in the book. But I heard Selick wrote Wybie into the movie so Coraline has someone to talk to (because in the book, she talks to herself a lot, or thinks to herself). And maybe they modeled him after Neil for the reason you previously stated.
Omg the part where he put the buttons to his eyes and says to be scared of buttons, then he smiles gives me the chills.......lol
Cool little promo. I like the sinister vibe underneath it all.
If I had to choose a narrator for my life, it wouldn't be a difficult choice.
he's like a hotter version of severus snape
I love how deliciously evil that smile at the end is.
Oh Neil Gaiman, :] He's wonderful, they way he talks about buttons as being used for cute little things...and yet the way he uses them in the movie in such a creepy way...I Love it! :D
Sort of off-topic, but I'll say it anyway. When I read Sandman, I always read Morpheus' dialogue in Neil's voice. :3
Ooo this video is eerie. Reminds me of how when I was younger, kids on the playground would always talk about Coraline like it was the scariest film they'd ever see.
Hehe, I have a good friend who has Koumpounophobia. I considered sending her this, but that would just be cruel.
I laughed pretty hard. Very clever. I'm a huge fan of your work, especially your short stories. A Study In Emerald convinced me that you should be my favorite writer.
1602, Sandman and Coraline just confirmed it. Reading American Gods soon, hopefully.
American Gods is one of my favorites.
Coraline is very nice to, of course.
I absolutely loved the film Mr. Gaiman. I'm a big fan of your work and while I've never read the book Coraline, I'm making sure to fix that. Great video. You should make more videos like this.

You know this is gonna be a creepy video when their is a house with doors you have to open like that 0_0
Ah, what a treat. I only wish Neil would do more of these vidoes- maybe for upcoming books? Now this is fantasy fan service!
I love all of Gaiman's work, and I know i'll never look at buttons the same way again ... especially black ones ...
Neil Gaiman looks and sounds a helluva lot like Jeremy Brett here.
But that was the best movie trailer EVER. Trailers should all be like this. Neil Gaiman just talking about nothing, lol.
That smirk at the end was the perfect amount of creepy.
Wonderful video!!! Just fantastic.
You could do a coin trick with the buttons, since you learned it to write "American Gods"...or is there a great difference between coins and buttons on that?
I deeply love your books. Thank you a lot for your work.
Oh yeah. Definitely shivered.
If I wasn't afraid of buttons before, I certainly am now
I hate how the movie was all "buttons, buttons, buttons"! Like, OKAY, we get it!
I don't think the ghost children in the wardrobe even had button eyes in the book!
His smile at the end just killed me...
@CharryChuCinder12 i recommend black, it's traditional
....................okay, that was creepy 0_0
He definitely knows how to scare you XD. The heart-beat at the end was a nice touch 0_0
God, he's good.
OH MY GOD!!
BUTTONS!!!!
hmm, sounds like lemony snicket.
Glorious. Somebody compared Gaiman to Hitchcock. I think there's a bit or Rod Serling here too! Some network needs to snap Neil up as the host of their sci-fi/horror anthology series!
that was pretty fucking awesome
Buttons, forever closing the gap between adoreable and creepy.
Wow he seemed to make a talk about buttons seem slightly creepy....weird.
That's Neil's gift I think...like all the best writers. ;)
I have to say that I love your style! I also learned a new word today!
One of my fave authors, kind of like a (don't take this as an insult, if anything it's a very big compliment) less awesome Tim Burton.
Well, I wasn't a koumpounophobia sufferer before... but now!!! Thanks Neil!
i love coraline!!!!!!!
i just realized something after watching this video... Neil Gaiman is fucking terrifying.
I love this, but i do think that after watching this; I'll have trouble sleeping tonight. :)
I LOVE YOU NEIL!
I don't mind admiting that when I read Coraline I almost swallowed my heart when the Other mother turned around.
I was thirty-three at the time.
Thank you, Mr. Gaiman. You just made me (momentarily) afraid of buttons.
I LOLd at the description box XD
Gold
Wybie is a mix (half white & half black). Neil is British.
i'm sure do!
now i wont be able to wear my winter coat without feeling a little scared...
Um, Mr. Gaiman. I live in the United Kingdom and I was wondering...when is Coraline released in theatres over here?
Great!
he always reminds me of snape
i want buttons in my eyes...that would be freakin' sweet!
MirrorMask is amazing.
I am now terrified of buttons.
I wasn't afraid of buttons...until now.
My ex is koumpounophobic. For five and a half years I wore clothes with no buttons. I'm tempted to send him a link to this video. Is that cruel?
I had two friends that suffered from
Koumpounophobia. Funny, funny, funny.
Mr. Gaiman, you're a creeper. But I say that in the most respectful, and awestruck way possible.
This freaks me the fuck out and I'm not sure why. Damn.
That us really very frightening.
@dontleademsomuch
Me too, I'd love to see a Garth Ennis video promo on the finer points of
'The Boys' (with props of course) although the humorless RUclips
thought police would likely go ballistic.
Neil can act well!
What font is "A few words from the author Neil Gaiman" typed in?
☻_☻ NEIL GAIMAN RULES!!!
Oh dammit.
Okay, I'm creeped out. I am creeped the FUCK out.
Neil to me, is if Tim Burton was an author instead of a director.
I backed away so hard on my sofa that I have a cramp in my leg. And that means I can't run now...
I think this video has made me frightened of buttons lol
@Shiek927 really? have you read any of tims poems and short stories? tims stories are more sad and beautiful, like the melancholy death of oyster boy, neils stories are more creepie and stuff... I mean, none of tims movies are really scary i think they are just beautiful but thats just my opinion
Neil's shot was done 16x9 (or wider) and they made him squished in the 4x3 aspect ratio. Such a shame.
Mr. Scary Trousers, you can make anything creepy.
I want your library
Ohhh, dear. Neil Gaiman is now at the top of my list of people to avoid because they creep me out. ;)
ahahaha, neil, you are the best :P
Never knew buttons could be so sinister....
Why do I have sneaking suspicion that koumpounophobia we be much more common in the next generations...
@bluenoserr are u kiddin me of course it does :P
I think they did base the character off of Mr. Gaiman
@NickBFilms mess his hair up? what, even more?
Yeah, but just LOOK AT THEM!! How can you not see even the slightest resemblance? Their hair styles look kinda the same, and they both have black jackets on.
I want your buttons!
....am I the only one that thinks Wybie looks like Neil? Maybe even modeled after him?
he looks like dream
I just got koumpounophobia.
u can make anything seem scary can't u neil?
LOL! =D
Nobody believes me when I tell them buttons are scary when I lend them my copy of Coraline. Three days later, and, well...
(The background music in this just makes everything better/worse)
haha! fantastic!
@kwraikarn Yes it is. Do it.
Well, Neil, I think you just have a whole bunch of people koumpounophobia. Nice work!
freaky man
I don't like you Neil Gaiman, you make me not want to wear button clothing.
With the buttons on his eyes he looks a bit like Howard Stern.
