Recently got the chicane for SRT and it’s a game changer. I used wrench and hitch climber but switching from srt to ddrt in v rig in seconds during a removal is so quick with petzl roll clip. Schmooooth

The ZigZag is still a current Petzl product, although there has been recalls to fix limited numbers of batches.

I'm 69 and I still use the Chimney knot or taut line hitch w/ 2 under 1 over or more wraps if needed..

I seen you attaching the zigzag to the double leg tether with a carabiner on the minor axis. Was this just for a quick demonstration. If so what would you recommend for attaching the double-leg tether to the zigzag

is the rope runner pro a better device than this zigzag pro plus? which is a better device between the two?
Would like your opinion on a device I use for hunting it's a mad rock safeguard belaying device I use it for SRT and reppel I've seen alot of mixed feeling about it and what I'm using it for. I was thinking the zig zag might be a safe option but it alot bulker ? Do you have to run rope wrench in SRT configuration?
Then why get the chicane with the kit if the RWrench is that much smoother?

Sorry, so old school. always used a "taught line" hitch in the redwoods, 2 down/one up with "safety blue" rope. Course I subbed!
Thank you for that review I am a beginner myself and I have my eyes on the zigzag. What is the weight rating? I'm 6'5 300lbs will this be fine thanks....
140kg or 308#, by the time you add a saw and harness, etc... I think it will work but be careful. Spikes are generally rated for 350#
Thanks for the great vid! I was wondering if I could attach to my zigzag with a knot since I don't have rope with eye,...heard somewhere that the reason Petzl says to use an eye is bc a knot can catch zigzag links and maybe somehow push them to release rope when you weren't expecting....see you using a knot here (2:00), and wondered if maybe a loop (Fig8?) that's a bit long (8-10"?) would place the knot away from the zigzag links, and your hands as they operate it. (esp. for my older zigzag w/o the two holes where you can connect to the hole a little farther away). Although with a loop of course you can't lock the knot onto the biner to hold it in position, maybe use some other method if that's desired.
sounds like you've done your research, do what feels safe, and follow the manufacturers recommendations ;) I have used the knot as a termination in a pinch (although I much prefer a splice) and find that some knots work better than others like an anchor bend rather than a fisherman's termination or a backed up bowline or figure 8

i carry my hitch climber and rope wrench and chicane on my saddle plus my d-4 incase something happens but i bounce back between rope wrench n hitch climber and the chicane and zag i use the d-4 for spar chunk out its of n on easy peasy to no pulling a million feet of rope

I actually have a video about the two primary saddles I use the Monkey Beaver and the Tuefelberger Treemotion. Check it out both are excellent and comfortable for all day use
Everything gets uncomfortable eventually so relative to other saddles I’ve tried, they are both 9/10 I’ve yet to find any that are more comfortable... I’m hoping to try the treerex by @edelrid next

I just found your channel I really like it I've been using the zigzag for a little bit now my question to you is do you find it to be a 100% safe and you trust it
I been using it for years and even though like anything it takes time to get used to and trust, I do trust it at any height. I have used it for years now and the only question that comes to mind is my anchor point but never the Zigzag after daily inspection. Also though, I absolutely pair
it with the Chicane as recommended.

I have 3, two zigzags and one plus, all swivel versions. I use them everyday in trees and palms. Simple, easy to set and use. 100% reliable. I’ve used hitches and pulley and doing 15 cocos a day the hitch cord doesn’t last long.
I watched the unicender and akimbo video 1st and left a long comment about what i climb on. Having the rope wrench, I'll probably switch from a friction hitch to a zig zag in the future.
i still use hitch cordand my zig zag my zag slips on 11 mill dragon fly so i run half inch on my zag and hitch cord n rope wrench on my dragon fly im 250 pounds with no gear
@BwrightAway I think you’ll find you love a zigzag after climbing on hitches, and the rope wrench works well with it too. Like John said, sometimes with smaller newer ropes I get some slippage as well! All my older bigger ropes function well however this problem gets worse as the zigzag wears in.
I'm an older climber been using the lockjack sport for years but want to change for my last few years of climbing been considering the sigsag or the sj3 any thoughts?
Zigzag is not mid line attachable it's a pain in the neck, to maintain it dry it out, squirrel rope is okay
What suspenders do you use on your Treemotion Evo harness, i just bought the same harness but i have trouble finding some for mine, can you help on that brotha
The suspenders I used in this video are from monkeybeaver.com they’re great 👍🏼 but you’ll have to figure out pie to mount them. A couple soft shackles or XSRE carabiners through the holes in the back

How do you use the zig zag plus with the Samson voyager 11.8. The ends of mine are too think to insert into the zig zag. Please help
I do use it with that rope but it does get tough to pull through. Sometimes I will cut a small maybe 8” section of the core out of the rope at the end because the cover alone is easier to pull through then the rest goes easily after that. It can also help to wash the rope as well.
Hey, did you custom make your chest harness piece to your suspenders? I have a newtribe onyx and I use AWP carpenter suspenders on it, about to start getting into srt with my zig zag. What kind of material/strap do you use for the chest harness?

do you use the sewn or spliced eye on the double-rope setup or do you normally use a termination knot? and why or why not? I am new to tree climbing technique. Thank you!
Is it safe to install the carabiner sideways, like you did, when using/installing the rope wrench/tether?
The way he did it is perfectly safe, it isn't sideloaded so there shouldn't be a problem and if for some strange reason it did fail it's not actually his main system.
Worst case if it did somehow fail the Zigzag would still be holding you so you aren't going anywhere. If he was sideloading his main system then yeah that would be dangerous since a failure would cause you to just free fall.

What’s y’all’s experience with retiring one of these fellas. They seem pretty difficult to visually inspect compared to the rope runner or akimbo and just very small load bearing components. I like the idea of the ZigZag the more and more I see it, but still just doesn’t quite seem safe.
I’ve retired a couple of them over the years when I start to notice hairline cracks in the Stainless links during my daily inspection.
I do want the zig zag plus just a tad bit expensive. Thanks for the review.

Have you tried the ART spiderjack3 if so what’s your thoughts/opinion?
I climb on this everyday. I love how the rope feeds through so easily. It is also very durable. There is a learning curve though as it functions way differently then a knot.
I don’t think Reon sells the wrench tether any more. If anyone knows where to get them please let me know. Thanks. I’m using 2 rope wrenches and 2 DMM Captain Hooks. I will trade a Brand new in box Captain Hook$180 for a Reon Rounds tether if anyone wants to.
I'd like to see how you hit certain crotches on trees or do you take what you can get and progress and adjust friction saver as you climb?
Generally I use a big-shot, or throw by hand, I’ve got a video about it on my channel somewhere along with a few techniques I use for isolating branches.

What have you done to the tail of your rope to get it so rigid and pointy?
Usually just cut it to a taper and use electrical tape and some heat to melt the end/hold it together

Great review. I'm trying to decide what hardware to buy. I'm an oldie, but I really want to climb into trees to do tree work. The ZigZag+ looks great, but should I go with Reon Rounds Tether or is there a better combination? Thanks in advance for any help from anyone. Bill in Indiana.
I have the chicane and I’m not a fan, I would totally recommend the Reon Rounds tether and rope wrench instead, that’s a good way to go.
Hey Strider Tree I love and appreciate all your knowledge sharing. I am Arborist contract climber over near the coast in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. I think your near me in the Sierra foothills yes? I was hoping you would do a comparison with the Akimbo and the Rope Runner pro. I own both but just got the RRP. So far I think the Akimbo is superior. Especially in a 3 to 1 limbwalk configuration using the scam technique. Thanks in advance. Sean S

What length tether is needed for the zigzag
Are you asking about the SRT tether connected to the rope wrench?
it just needs to be long enough that the wrench can fold down without contacting the links too much, Its hard to describe. something approximately the same length as the chicane is probably ideal. Or you can buy the Chicane. You don't need a tether however if you're just using it in MRS or DRT
@@Stridertrees I've been climbing on drt for years making the switch to srt and have had the zigzag for awhile from everything I've read or watched most people prefer the rope wrench to the chicane
@@travislilly6292 I agree, i have both and prefer the rope wrench. I think it would fit most lengths of tether except for the shorter ones. anything thats around 8-12 inches should work. @reonrounds makes a really nice spring loaded one if you have the $$ its spendy but excellent

I love my Zigzag but the horror stories stay in the back of my head when I’m up there swinging around.
Thank you for showing how pulling 200 ft of rope through is fun, each time. That's not gonna happen. Unless it's on its own line and stays there in the bag for whenever.
Or you could have two or three on different ropes and be broke.. Great review though, it is a nice device. Jim

u should watch climbing arborist podcast with the petzl employees, it goes into say how diffrent the chicane is to the rope wrench
I have used both extensively, and there are some differences, but they aren't all positive in my experience. To each their own however. I still find I generally prefer the chicane for how easy it is to put on. The exception being if I am pruning a big canopy when I am using lots of redirects or other weird maneuvering in the canopy, and the chicane just gets in the way more often than the RW.
Wtf is the old one still safe to use?
Petzl recalled the very first units and has a detailed description of which are recalled. Serial numbers etc. check petzl site for info. A quick google should find it. For the small extra cost get the swivel version. Totally worth it.

Great tool but $270+ for a novice who wants simplistic safety. More old fashioned non mechanical which takes practice, but 1/4 the price but needs patience Pulleys hung over the tree?
who ever got holding the camarra must be a kid....
No midline install and the fact that the thing lets go if you bump it makes it unsuitable for me. And on SRT you have to use a Chicane with it... Nah. I'll stick with the Petzl large id descender. Way, way better for SRT work.
