Yes and no. The thing with him being a Ranger...is that he still would've had to endure the training...which is no mean feat. Yeah, his specialty may be the GTFO maneuver, but the guy is a certified badass, and he demonstrates it time and again in the show.
      .
Itami is a genuine hero, because he doesn't want to be one. He just wants to live his life, but he's nominally a good person, and won't refuse to help someone in true need. The weird combination of his drive to support his hobby, and his need to do the right thing, even at great cost to himself, is what pushed him to acquire the skills he has.
      .
Kuribayashi is cool, and tough...but honestly, she's just a common thug, but with a conscience. If they came to blows, Itami would win if he were fighting for what's right. Otherwise, yeah, he'd probably just bail.

His S qualification is more badass when you understand what SERE training entails (his most noticeable expertice that contributed most to Itami's S qual, aside from passing other basic requirements). I've never been in the military but watched a lot of youtube vids so take this with heaps of salt tho.
You're actually not supposed to escape in SERE. If you go out of the training area, the instructors will get serious and smoke you afterwards. You're supposed to survive as long as possible inside the training area, and get captured. You are meant to experience the torture that comes afterwards too, to learn the stress and mental toll of the whole ordeal.
Meanwhile, Itami was stated to hide long enough that the instructors gave up the search. He is so OP that he broke the training program lol

Yea I almost had this reaction - was taking care of this military vet in the hospital. On break I overheard the nurses talking how he was a badass in Vietnam, trained in both army and marines, been court martialed for striking an officer (the officer wanted a salute, this guy refused as snipers were a thing, officer raged hell about it, in coming fire, and this guy straight out hit the officer to the ground out of harms way and this officer STILL court martialed him…the vet refused to apologize as to do so would mean his action which saved this officers life was wrong) and I swear they were adding more to the story
I came back to the room and saw the vet going through channels looking for something specific - seeing me he said “I’m looking to what my grand children introduced to me…it’s not a cartoon…Hentai? No no…anime, I can’t find anime on here. You know where we can watch anime? Or better yet, what was it…vocal bot? Vocal Ade? It’s the singing computer person.”

Him: no no… what’s her name…long pig tails nearly ankle long… and those blonde twins…
    Me: VOCALOID!!!!!!!
Him: Oh you like them too?
Edit: I had plenty of Vocaloid on my phone and we shared our favorites - he was overjoyed to find out there were English and Polish Covers. He did not know there many more vocaloids, he only knew of Miku, Len and Rin, Meiko, and Kaito

The thing is, if you look at Itami's track record so far, it's not all that surprising. When the gate opened, he responded without hesitation and showed great CQC skills even in odd situations. He has great situational awareness and a keen response to action, leading him to kill dragons. He acts aloof and relaxed to raise morale and make friends, but when shit hits the fan, he focuses up real quick. He may not have the best skills out there, but he's a good fit for what he's earned. I can't remember if it was his ranger certification or his S certification, but I remember reading somewhere that a group of (I think) special forces members were sent out to find him and they couldn't find him for a week. He ended up coming out on his own and no one knew where he was despite their best efforts in tracking. He was commended for his incredible ability to get tf outta dodge and stay far from trouble, so they went ahead and certified him because anyone that can elude special forces alone for a week is a monster in their own right.

Read the manga. In the part the agent meets the group and describes Itamis' achievements that got him his title, Itami explains that he's there by the anthill method: in a colony of ants, around 30% are lazy. Even if that 30% is removed, after a while another 30% appears. So the army decided to have him as the lazy one to keep the whole JSDF at full strength.
Later on, some other superiors say that Itami is an expert at hiding and running away. Examples followed by him disappearing during some exercises and only finiding him when the exercises are over.

The CO of special forces commented "(Itami) has a special talent at sensing danger". To his credit, Itami still knows everything a ranger should know, even if it's to the minimum passing standard, which is still way above any regular combat troop. While not clearly shown you can still tell from his assignment that he is very much an all-rounder (Command Foward scouts -> VIP protection -> Airbone squadron command (The mission he abandoned and nearly got court marshaled) -> resource survey team)
You have a different talent if you can pass every single test at the minimum grade, no matter the difficulty of the test.

There's one point where he nearly quit because he had to do some extreme paratroop deployment trainings which cool enough, came into play during last few battles surrounding the gate.
Something along those lines, read it like 3 years ago and got frustrated after hearing some teasers of a "sequel" to it ever since I finished it but never managed to find easily accessible material outside of old ass reddit posts.

In the US, of which both JSDF Special Forces School _and_ Ranger School are based off of, both schools have an interesting contrast:
Special Forces school is designed to make you an extremely technically competent soldier. Ranger school is designed to *suck,* and many a candidate has died or suffered permanent mental and physical consequences as a result of the nightmares endured there.
To have completed Special Forces school, you will have proven that when it comes to soldierly tasks, you execute them with razor-like precision and consistency. To have completed Ranger school, you will have proven that your force of will is as strong as any mountain.
    And Itami has both.

the biggest point, however, is that she's right:
itami was awarded both positions because his superiors wanted to beat some sense into his lazy-ass... and failed miserably. he's got quick wit and is rather level headed during crisis, but not to the extent the other shown members of either team.
his deeds in the beginning was heroic, and impressive, but not surprising much less above average for the other soldiers under his own command.

Seal are not in the Japan, and Itami is in the Ground unit like the comment above said.
But it would be funny if someone brings up, and said his father was a Seal and trained him during his teens. While his mother was from japan's air force equivalent.

      @captainpepe5159 Год назад +4

Given the stature, there's no real reason he would become a "seal"
Let's ignore the obvious that he's in a different branch (only navy guys can be seals), you gotta remember that there's multiple squads in seals. All seal teams (apart from seal team six/DEVGRU/whatever you wanna call em) are actually considered Tier 2. Yes, they're exceptionally well trained so on and so forth, but according to the show, the special forces that he joined mimicks green beret (general term for special forces) and Delta Force (CAG/"The unit"/D-boys/whatever else they call themselves this week lol). If that's the case, there's essentially no going higher at that point. Him becoming a seal would technically be going backwards from Tier 1 to Tier 2.
      Hope that explains it :)

Gonna nerd out hear, don't mind me.
While not always the case, many US Delta Force members were once Army Rangers. US Army Rangers are the largest elite unit with the capability to act as a armored infantry company. They are the poster child for ''shock troops'' which are elite soldiers, usually armored infantry that are sent in to smash an enemy attack formation and/or break through a defensive line. So Army Rangers are already monsters
Special forces is an umbrella term for small elite units meant for infiltration. Their mission objective is separated and trained accordingly. When people first think of special forces with the knife emblem they usually think of the US's Green Berets, or the British Special.Air Service or ''S.A.S''.
Green Berets are trained to infiltrate a country, train up local opposition, and aid in leading a rebellion against an established government. Assassination and installing a new leader that sides with the US is also part of it. They are taught several languages and must understand culture, politics, and psychology as well. They first were deployed in Vietnam. Japan's JSDF Special Forces division is modeled after Green Berets same for the ranger program, hence how Itamai trains elves later to fight dragons.
SAS is Great Brittan's go to special ops team. They have been trained to do almost everything, and are among the best in the world at it. They are the equivalent to the US's Delta Force. But I believe they can also act inside the UK, while the US Army ''with the exception of national/coast guard'' and by extension Delta Force can't except under martial law.

@@shadow9774 My friend, I think you're forgetting the most important thing here.
Very technically speaking (even nerdier than you), when referencing the U.S Military (and all it's branches), Special Forces ONLY exist in the U.S Army. Outside of the U.S Army, there are NO "Special Forces". All the other branches call them "Special Operations Force" or "SOF" for short.
Traditionally, said U.S Army "Special Forces" were called under an umbrella term "Green Beret" since they, shockingly, wear green berets with their parade uniforms.
Tl;dr, technically "Special Forces" is not exactly an umbrella term when it comes to the U.S Military, although in other militaries it is the case (Spetznas for Russia etc)
But yes, you're mostly right on everything else!
S.A.S used to operate on their own soil back in the day (famous embassy raid for example), but to my knowledge that's a thing in the past. There used to be no elite police force in UK back in the day, so they did it, but since CTSFO now exist, it's no longer the case!
