bit of a strange question, but who likes thin keyboards (low-key) that "click" when you press a key to confirm you've pressed it?
My school had keyboards like that, but then they replaced them with flimsy buttons, now it feels like I'm pressing rubber...
What you need is a mechanical keyboard.
mechanical?
Chad robinson Yeah, you can get specific keyswitches and caps to suit your needs and everything. Mine has "Cherry MX Blue". Satisfying as hell. Expensive but lasts forever and is a pleasure to type on.
The old ones must have been just "low profile" rubber dome switches or proper (laptop-like) scrissor switches. Most likely you have the cheapest rubber domes now, Fujitsu, Lenovo, HP - all the same rubber dome crap. I'd recommend a mechanical as well - though if you like scrissor switches, they're fine as well.
I like the low profile, sharp response and tactile feeling keys in laptops, but I do prefer full height mechanical switches over the scrissors, since they have a better indents on the keycaps. Since low-profile keyboards hardly ever have indents in the keycaps nowadays, which makes it harder to type without looking at the keyboard. But it's rare to have a really good, sharp tactile feel on a rubber dome or even on a scrissor switch. - But the rule seems to be "the older the rubber dome keyboard, the better it feels". Seriously, I've tried a couple of early 90's keyboards in flea markets and they are almost indentical to a proper mechanical feel.
I'm using a Rosewill RK-9000 with MX Blues, so I'm a bit biased on that one. I had reds and I'd say if I were 100% gaming all the time, the reds would be a great choice in my opinion. But for typing, nothing comes near the Cherry MX Blues (I've even tried the IBM Model M so I have a comparison of the "god-switches" - the buckling spring switches as well). Except the Model M, of course.
So, assuming you like low profile keys, you like the precision of the tactile feedback of the keys? That would count towards checking out Cherry MX Blue and Brown switches. If you like silence, try Browns - but if you don't mind the click, Blues are superior in the feel of the keys while typing. To be honest, it's rare to have a proper scrissor switches on a desktop keyboard, though Cherry does make a good scrissor switch model as well.
TL;DR; Old ones most likely scrissor switches or good rubber domes and they were replaced by flimsy, low quality rubber domes. I'd recommend checking out Cherry MX Browns (silent tactile) or Blues (clicky tactile) based on your preference to tactile keys, but there's next-to-none desktop keyboards with good scrissor switches, but Cherry does make a model with those. - If you're interested in keyboards to a such degree that you'd be interested in buying one.
