    About 40 years ago I was working at the Giles weather station in central Australia.
    They had 2 old Nation 4 cylinder diesel each was about 10 feet tall.
    These National engines had been running in the power station for about 50 years without any failures they had remote cooling towers and were air start the fly wheel was about 7 or 8 feet in diameter.
    To start them you had to decompress the cylinders then using a long spanner to rotate to top dead centre on cylinder 1 then using a hand pump mounted on the wall pump up the air pressure hit cylinder with the air pressure when spinning release the decompression leaver.
    These engines had been doing 600RPM’s for 50 years.
    I’ve never seen anything like them since.

    I was a chemist at a coal gas plant and we had two large gas-fired engines as a backup to the electric motor-driven pumps to pressurize the gas to the gasometers. The gas-powered engine would be started every couple of days to ensure they would work if we had no electric power. Sure made a great sound when both gas engines were on.

    • @madmanmapper
      @madmanmapper 4 года назад

      Back in those days, coal gas was the predecessor to natural gas and propane. Most city gas supplies (for lighting) would have been coal gas. It's acquired by cooking coal, in the same process that turns it into coke, which is burned in forges. My guess would be that this engine was installed in a place with access to city gas supply. Either that, or at the place that made coke and coal gas.
