  • An Indian gaur grazing inside the forest. Here, Gaurs, also called as Indian Bisons. When I was in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve safari in Ooty. I saw these gaurs grazing. While that time, this was taken. Extremely shy in nature, it’s in fact difficult to get close to a gaur in its natural habitat. The gaurs graze on young leaves, green grass, and soft shoots when the weather conditions are favorable.

Actually, there is no such thing as an indian bison, it is more correct to call it a gaur, "indian bison" is a misleadingly incorrect name as the gaur is not a bison, nor is it found only in the Indian subcontinent, the gaur is also found in parts of Southeast Asia too, the gaur is a member of the genus Bibos, which also contains the banteng and kouprey, just like there are no such things as either an american buffalo or a european buffalo as both species are more correctly called an american bison and a european bison respectively, bison are more closely related to the yak (Poephagus grunniens), while the Bibos genus that contains the Gaur (Bibos gaurus), Banteng (Bibos javanicus), and Kouprey (Bibos sauveli) is the most basal extant genus of the subtribe Bovina (True Cattle).

Thank you so much. The gaur also known as the Indian bison, is a bovine native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since. A search on Google also shows this information.

@TRA Arunthavaselvan - Wildlife and Nature, "indian bison" is a misleadingly incorrect name for this animal as the gaur is not a bison, nor is it found only in the Indian subcontinent, it is also present in parts of southeast asia too.
