      Um, yeah I take your point but it's a matter of semantic difference IMO. As it isn't so much underrated as it is *under recognised.* Those of us who know the film rate it very highly but not many people, even in the age bracket you cite, are aware of its existence. In my experience anyway.

    Richard Dimitri belongs in the character actor's Hall of Fame for this part.
    The genius about the way Moroney's profanity-butchering dialog was written was a) it was very funny, and b) because he wasn't using real expletives, this could have aired on broadcast TV without bleeping it.
    Also love Dick Butkus, "what a mouth on that guy..."

    I remember seeing the movie on Comedy Central when I was in high school in the mid-late 90's; went to school the next day talking like Roman Maroney in study hall. My friend sitting next to me thought it was the funniest $#!+ he ever heard. We're all supposed to be quiet with no talking and his face was red and a vein was popping out of the side of his head while trying not to laugh 😆

    Always remember in Dublin when film came out there was a hardware store "HUGH FORKIN " some bastage was quick enough to tag "ICE HOLE " to the end of the sign ! Priceless.

    one of the funniest movies EVER! I still quote it. "You fargin sneaky bastage" I say it at work all the time. The girls I work with had never heard of it. I recorded the speech into a ringtone, and it's currently my ringtone. Everyone laughs when they hear it. I love this movie, and Moroney did rule the movie, wouldn't have been the same without his character.

    This is a really underrated comedy. A great parody of gangster movies. I first found out about it by seeing clips in Weird Al's video for "This Is The Life". Looked so oddball that I had to find out what movie it was. Once I did, I managed to rent a copy (pre-RUclips days, kids) and loved it. Got my own copy on DVD now.

    I am of Italian decent, and my grandfather was from Italy. When he spoke with his Italian accent he sometimes flubbed the words and gave us a good laugh. This movie always brought back those memories, but my grandfather didn't curse like Moroney.

    man i remember liking this movie when i was a kid but watching it now.. there are parts that make me laugh out loud.. and laugh hard. like i had forgotten about the silly car crash where the guy yells "OH MY GOD" and they just repeat him yelling that. it's like the sound guys loved his take and amused themselves by looping it like that

    I’m 45. I saw this when I was a kid, and I’ve been quoting it for decades. It’s a sign of a distinguished person that either quotes from, or recognizes quotes from Johny Dangerously.
    Like Kung Pow, it just lets me know I’m in the presence of a worth knowing individual

    I wonder how many takes they did, trying to play a tough gangster and stay in character while Maroni does on his ranting, saying 'Bastiges, and my fav, 'Fargon Icehole'. The butchered words on paper, funny. But this actor created magic with his hilarious delivery.

    The truly brilliant thing about the Moronie character (aside from being funny as hell) was that since what he was saying wasn't true profanity, you could most likely air this on broadcast TV uncut. I love Dick Butkus' line, "What a mouth on that guy..."
    Whatever happened to Richard Dimitri anyway? Besides this part, I remember him having the part of Cheeseburger in "Let it Ride," with Richard Dreyfuss. (another very underrated comedy) Thanks for posting! Free Johnny!

    I remember he also played Tony Cheeseburger in 1989's "Let it Ride" with RIchard Dreyfuss. That movie is a favorite of mine, too.

    The truly brilliant part of Moronie's character and his mangled use of expletives, was that (besides being very funny) you could probably have aired it on broadcast TV since it wasn't real profanity. When this came out, the people at the place I used to work, looked for any excuse to proclaim, "This is fargin' war!" Thanks for the post - Free Johnny!

    My dad took me to see this movie in the theater when I was 11 or 12. I never swore in front of my parents until I was in my 40s...but they were ok with the substitute swear words, knowing exactly what they meant. Now that I'm 50, my dad doesn't care about my language but I still can't bring myself to say the F word in front of my mother even though she uses it constantly.

    Oh yeah, I still quote the courtroom lines to people randomly...lmao Michael Keaton...he was Batman when I was a kid and because our last names are spelled similarly everyone use to ask me if I was related to him. After a while I just told everyone that he was my uncle.
