I think one of the hardest things I ever did was to declutter after I lost a tremendous amount of weight (60#). This changed my body completely and sent me down 5 dress sizes. Things were getting cramped in the closet, and my reluctance needed to be addressed. I realized I was afraid I'd gain the weight back. I actually had to declutter my thinking before I decluttered my closet. Thank you for a terrific video Marie-Anne, and here I go...I need to declutter again...now I have the tools. :)
I used to feel guilty getting rid of items I had spent a lot of money on even though I no longer wore them. Someone pointed out that it is very wasteful to have unworn clothes in your closet that someone else could be getting use out of - good point!
Good reminder about bras too Marie-Anne, nothing spoils an outfit more than a loose bra!
Madeleine
Yes..support matters more as our bodies change!!!
Merci Marie-Anne! You’re very inspiring. I did a major declutter of my wardrobe recently and trying to train myself not to buy something unless I will wear it a lot. I have a passion for designer vintage which is proving difficult to overcome! But a wardrobe full of majority pieces I can wear almost 365 is a godsend.
Bonsoir Marie-Anne! I loved that bateau navy top and was crying “non non et non!” until you said that it had seen better days. What a beautiful top and great buy.
It was such a favourite 💙
Thank you for an inspiring video! I have done a lot of closet cleaning, but still have too many clothes now that I'm retired and my lifestyle has changed. I enjoyed hearing the reasons you had for donating your various items. I am down to purging items I still really like, but probably won't wear. It's more difficult than getting rid of things that you don't like or are worn out. Wish me luck!
I wish you a world of luck. It's very difficult until it becomes a habit.
Even your cast off clothes are beautiful and good quality! You're right about bright colours for hotter climates. I've been debating whether to declutter these and you have helped me decide to let them go. My wardrobe is very classic, with a few bright Hermes scarves!
I love my clothes too much, Marie-Anne, I do donate a lot, buy too impulsively, and get emotionally attached to some-Oh, I wore that the day that was so wonderful, I need to keep it!! I admire your decisiveness, and that box in the closet-great idea to get started ☺️💕
For me it’s really difficult to let go items which are worn out but I loved so much....
I have decluttered six large bagfulls. Feels better. Still a long way to go though have far too much always think maybe one day I will need that !
Gail Spear
Put those items away, if you don't look for them in a few months then it's time to let them go.
I agree. Or I have literally boxes of things for "special occasions " that never comes
You are such an inspiration Marie-Anne! I find it is so refreshing looking at your videos; you give great value to the clothes you have as well as the ones you chose to donate 👍Good for the environment!
That keeps them out of the land fill too!!
I have been working on organizing my closet. I love your idea of having a box in the closet for donations. Good video with great ideas. Thank you 😊
Ooo, I love decluttering
I often regret giving away items bc if I keep them long enough they’re back in style. If a person ‘s closet is not crowded, is it a good idea to hang on to clothes you no longer wear in case you want to wear later when style comes back around. I have had a few pieces for 20 plus years! I do usually wear again. As soon as I get rid of something, I say, “ that item would have worked w this present outfit!” And I wish I still had it!! What do you say, Ann Marie ?
MC, I only wish I could be as decisive as Marie-Anne...I hang on to my clothes with the idea that I WILL wear them, even though I haven’t in a year. And I get emotionally attached to them- “Oh, I wore this when I had a wonderful time on vacation...” I have to keep it. I think her idea of a box in the closet is a good start to donate more!
My mother taught me that yes..styles do come back, nut of you remember the last time..you have already had your turn!! Lol
I sooo hear you!
I recently moved from an alpine climate to a coastal rainy climate. My sweaters are too warm here. I also graduated at 59 and I am substitute teaching part time. So I needed a few dressy additions to jazz up my wardrobe. I like classic dressing but because of my coloring and shape I can wear asymetrical patterns and lines. You inspired me to buy a navy with white strpe shirt but it's too heavy for summer. Now I am looking for a lightweight white and navy in a 2x. Even though I am large, I like to be comfotable with a little style. I don't mind getting older, I just want to be vibrant, regardless of age.
Of course!! You have a new career and will need a few new pieces that suit the climate and work style you find in your new work environment!!
That "busy" floral dress is really beautiful and could be tamed by some cute short one color sweater
I love the box idea! I do this, and it makes organizing the donation pile so easy!
You are donating many treasures. Lucky recipients.
The part in the center of your top loading washing machine is called an agitator. You set a great example for clearing out! The only item I would have kept that you discarded was the red jeans, even if I just wore them during the Christmas season.
It's difficult to get rid of clothes that are only one size too small. I hope that by following your advice on eating they will fit me again!

Let me pass on what a wise woman told me regarding losing weight. I saw her one year, and she was probably 50-60 pounds overweight. The following year she had lost all that excess weight and might have been wearing a slim size 8 dress. She said you only need a knife to make her diet work. ( And she bought some bathroom scales. )
At every meal she would take the knife and divide her plate and eat only half of the food. She divided the bread, the dessert, everything. She never did without . Only cutting down the portion size caused this 60 year old lady to lose all that weight and gain better health and happiness.
Marianne, you empowered me to go the next step in my decluttering. For example, a close friend gifted me a dress that sat in my closet for the past six months, tags still attached. I could not bring myself to wear it due to several factors: 1) it is a large, "loud" pattern; 2) it incorporates too many colors (pink, oxblood, white, taupe); 3) it does not suit my pear shape rather draws attention to the widest part of my body. After watching this video I gave myself permission to donate the dress. In summary, as the months go by and I adopt the French chic philosophy, I'm experiencing fewer of those awkward moments in public of feeling my outfits attract too much attention or are simply unflattering. Thank you!
This video was so informative. I had no idea that a top loading washing machine was more harsh on clothing than a front loader. I have always owned a top loader & so did my Mother. When we purchase a new washer, I will remember this information. Thank you!
You can choose a gentle cycle. A lot of people are quite unhappy with front loaders.
I'm bad at giving clothes away, I can see that when you decluttered I would have kept all of them!😂 I even kept the clothes that were to tight, it additionally motivated me to lose weight and I wear them again now, but proudly gave away all the things that are to big for me now as I don't intend to gain weight again😅
Well done for decluttering and for your weight loss journey 👏
Ah, your summery camisoles are lovely; I also enjoy and have cotton camisoles with lovely simple details like a bit of lace at the top as they are so versatile. I also noted how well everything is folded as I also fold all my clothes similarly unless I keep them on hangers. Like you, I am fastidious and take care of my wardrobe - and never just toss them to pile up on a chair or on the floor in a closet. 👍🏼
I want to thank you for your donations Marie Anne cause I do the same thing frequently and I always encourage others to do the same.
Ps, Closet tour please!
I aways have a hard time giving away clothes that I like, but are too tight. My magical thinking is that I am going to loose weight and fit back into them. It never happens.
Carrie Moon-Dupree me too. I can't admit I am 59 instead of 39 and that I can live on air now.😂
I lost 7 lbs recently, even though i am still 8 lbs over my old self, i can now get into my "skinny" jeans. 😊
If you lose weight, you will want something new for your new body. :) If it bothers you, put the garment somewhere away from your closet with a note on it giving you a date that you WILL donate it, e.g., three months from now? And in three months' time, if you're not on a weight loss plan towards when it will fit, then donate it.
@@carriepatino1061 I am doing that too.
This sounds all too familiar - and Carrie Patino’s comment about not wanting to admit that I’m now 59, not 39!!!
I really need to do this, Marie-Anne. Thank you for the great tips on how best to proceed. I’ll be honest, I LOVED those first pair of trousers, the printed ones. They are stunning.
Wish I lived near your op shop so I could purchase a few of those😂😂
I find it hard to give away clothes that I love, that no longer suit me. So, I keep them and never wear them, but not anymore. There will be changes. I now have a basket, by my wardrobe, and when I pass, I put an item in the basket. It works. Merci beaucoup, Marie-Anne.
Very helpful and encouraging video Marie-Anne! It is great that you donate your pieces once you recognize that you'll not where them again in a different climate and cultural area. I find it easy to donate things that I've worn out or are no longer my style, but find it difficult to get rid of things that are really nice design/quality/expensive but that I no longer wear. I've brought several of those pieces to a consignment shop and that made it easier for me. :-) Elizabeth
I’m very inspired by your video, I just found your videos in this difficult time safe isolated.
I’m going to de clatter my wardrobe starting today. Thanks for the inspiration
This was such a fun video to watch!! Thanks! Such cute pieces, but it's encouraging to remember even our favorite pieces have to be parted with when we no longer find we choose to wear them.
8 things I buy in Zara after 3 years only have one. I decided don't buy there anymore ... I decluter almost all of them. A jacket on dark blue is the only one fitts me very well. Nice video.
Your toss offs look better than my good wear!
Love your posts.
I have given away a lot of clothes lately from my younger days and it felt great that they can give someone else joy and come to use. I must say I love striped as well classic ,chic and elegant, I got a lot of striped dresses and tops that I love to wear 🤍🙏🏽 always such inspiration to watch your videos .
When you held that scarf up against your face your skin really glowed. You looked great in that softer, lighter palette. I’m enjoying seeing why you are deciding to donate but I think the scarf was a mistake to get rid of. You are a very beautiful woman and it made you look even more beautiful xx
Merci beaucoup 🤗
Your impeccable taste is inspiring. Love all your donation items! I, too love stripes, and also polka dots. I must have some French blood, as my closet is filled with black and white. I’ve been adding in navy for years now. Small prints, if any.
Thank you!
A great video, Marie-Anne; and very timely as I intend to have a cull this weekend. Thank you - I'll get rid of items past their best - apart from keeping a few bits for gardening. x
I agree, Marie-Anne, about the washing machine. I have used a front loader for over thirty years and some of my clothes I have had for that long as well! A front loader is far more gentle on the clothes. So you can purchase better quality classic clothes and they will last longer!
Ladies, please send old bra's to Zabra, there is a UK postage address to send them to, look up on Facebook. They send bra's to South Africa for ladies who can't afford bra's.
It's hard to believe that there are women who can't afford a bra. Such an unfair world!😟
I have a tropical dress that I wear only o beach vacations. Great video
I "Konmari'ed" my home last April. I had a lot of clothes, more than you could wear in a year. This is partly because I take good care of my clothes and even cheap items last a LONG time for me. Sometimes I had stopped wearing items because the novelty had worn off. Many of those items are timeless, too. I felt very guilty letting those go. Some of these kinds of items are still in my closet and chest of drawers and I am gradually moving them into my donation box if I find I really truly am not happy to wear them. I have a couple of things that are no longer in style but are so pretty. I do need to let them go, too. I used to have a very quirky style, but finally had to make my wardrobe less eccentric because I am getting older and I need to be taken seriously, and some of those pieces were hard to let go. Although I have some clothes I never get tried of, I find that eventually I just get bored of most of my clothes sooner or later, even though they are trendless, or a new item comes along and pushes old items out of my mind. I also do like having a few trendy items for fun. It makes me wonder if it's worth it for me to spend on investment pieces knowing I will eventually just stop wearing them. After watching this video, I put one old skirt in my donation box because it has seen better days. I have another I will wear one last time for old time's sake. I loved it so much I had it recut when the original shape went out of style. I probably bought it a good 15 years ago. It's pilled now, so I hardly wear it. Anyway, I still have a lot of clothes, so I may have to do another round of Konmari.
There is a small Pill Remover device that only requires one battery that can eliminate many of those " bubbles " and make well worn..well loved items return to your wearable rotation!!
Thank you! I was doing the same thing as I was watching your video. Inspired by your style.
I love your tips and now have a donation bin in my closet. I love stripes too. I have lots of them. I love polka dots too. I have so many that I don’t wear. You’ve inspired me to Declutter and I do thank you so much. I know that I am posting on an old video but I’m enjoying catching up with you by watching all your old videos. Thank you. ❤
Thank you. You inspired me to go through my closet.
would like to see your closet organization always look forward to your post
Bonjour Marie-Anne. This is all great information and tips! Merci :)
I would like to shop where you donate your clothes to 😉
As would l...want to track down that navy top with shirred sides!!!
I enjoyed seeing how many striped things you had in your stack. I'm a big fan of stripes as well (and polka dots). In general, it's easy for me to get rid of clothes. I can be picky about comfort. I try to only buy things that are comfortable, but sometimes you can't tell until you wear it for at least a few hours. If I wear an item a few times, and it's not comfortable, I will put it in my donate box. The things that are hard for me to get rid of are items that I love, but are worn out, torn, or stained and don't look good anymore. It's always sad when that happens.
I LOVED this video! I have a very difficult time getting rid of ANY clothing! Even donating is difficult! I do know why... but ... that doesn't make it easier.😖 Your tips are great! (Editing because I accidentally sent it mid sentence). I THINK I can begin to use some of your tips! 👍 I wish you'd listed them below with your list of links. Then I could just take a screenshot! But I'll go back through & take notes❣ Question: Did your mom put any crockery in the box you gave her? 😏 Thanks, Marie-Anne! ❣ I value your professional experience! 😊 💓💞💞💞 🤪 My mind is whirling😏❣
@@MarieAnneLecoeur WOW, Marie-Anne❣ I am waaaay impressed!👍 I do have less difficulty giving away sets of crockery, especially when there's a housefire in our rural area. I know there's an immediate need. When my mother-in-law passed, we discovered she had a dozen+ sets of crockery! The family took several sets, we sold only one, and finally left abt 5 sets plus matching glassware in the large house when my husband & his brother sold it! 😏 But my clothes, especially those with special memories attached ... well I just "have to" keep those❣😖😏😊😖
I don't have a problem with getting rid of casual items, like tops or pants. But I struggled a lot when I gave away some special clothes, like dresses or other fancy tops for special occasions. Giving away shoes is also very hard, when they are not worn out, but just don't suit me and my (life-)style anymore.
Bonjour Marie-Anne. Coming to you from New Jersey. I’m new to your Channel and am loving it! I’m in the process of decluttering and am finding your process to be very helpful. I really needed to view this video. #downsizing#simplify
A very good video. I do need your example.
By the way, i visited Lyon. I went and bought a sweater in Saint James.
Well, i told about your video concerning their shop. They did not know..but we looked at it there. lol.
I use XS normally, but now i had to take size S though.
You’re so good at folding!
A few times a year I go through my closet and send what I no longer wear to the thrift store. There's a roll out container under my bed where I store my out of season clothes until it's time to switch them out for a new season. It prevents closet clutter and allows me to find everything easily.
So disciplined. Oh, la la!
Loved this video. It’s the one that got me shifted. I’m decluttering
Hi Marie-Anne, it is a long time since I watched your decluttering video. My dream was to do music lessons on youtube and I finally created 2 more channels specifically for music lessons one in English and the other in Afrikaans. I finally posted my first videos. This could never have happened before I didn't declutter my cupboard as well as my life. Thank you so much for your tips. What you say is true and it works.
I’m surprised so many items from Zara 😲 the scarf is so beautiful.
Thank you Marie!
I just ordered your book, The Tidy Closet, in paperback at amazon. I have a large wardrobe and I'm always looking for ways to organize it. My lifestyle changes a lot. I travel a great deal. I have to adapt to different locations. On top of that, I attend operas, theatre openings, and other events that require a "special" wardrobe in several seasons. Spending part of my time in Santa Fe, N.M. and part in Chicago requires a style shift depending on the event...sometimes I just go with my Santa Fe style, but other times a more urban..Big City look is preferred. My muses are artists and I have built capsules around them....Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Klimt (paintings), Erte, and Lou Lou de la Falaise. I also love the Japanese aesthetic with the wood cut like prints and saturated colors...Issey Miyake has staked a claim in my wardrobe. As an artist, I have a large paint box. I like choice. Paints, brushes, and my watercolor, pastels, and woodcut tools are easier for me to organize. I just sigh when I see my wardrobe. I feel overwhelmed, but have managed a sort of system to find things....which relies on my memory and critical thinking skills to locate an item...I have to remember it first! I was thinking of organizing my colors. Perhaps, type of garment, or by the muse that inspired them. I have separated Spring/Summer from Fall/Winter and have an off-season closet. The entire spare bedroom is given over to my wardrobe and a little powder-parlor has my shoes and boots. Our Master bedroom has one closet and it is very small. My husband needs that. I love my wardrobe. I have selected carefully...but have been doing it for decades. Quality lasts. Some pieces are consigned and sold. Still, it is large. Looking forward to gleaning tips from your book.
You are very fortunate and l hope you will continue enjoying your diverse lifestyle and travels!❤
Thank you for this video, Marie-Anne! ~ I would love to see a video of your kitchen (since you mentioned your Mom having so much cutlery!)
Linda Wilson I believe she said “crockery”
Bonjour Marie Anne,
Fabulous! I love it, thank you so much. Just what I needed. Looking forward to more. Great advice. Be well.
I love the top you are wearing or is it a dress? Over the last few months I've stopped colouring my hair, it's now a shiny silver. I've got rid of at least half my wardrobe as the colours were no longer as flattering. Now I can fill the spaces with new clothes.
The thing-a-ma-jig in the middle of the washing machine is called the agitator. And I love the black and white trousers ❤️
I like how you say, “goodbye” when you put items in the box. It means that you are letting go. I need to do this! I am keeping a beautiful red sweater that my husband bought me years ago but doesn’t look good anymore so I no longer wear it. Goodbye!
Thank you
I just decluttered a month or two ago, and I felt so much better after because my armoire was FULL to the point where if I took a top out, another would come out with it or fall off its hanger to the bottom of the armoire. Hilarious
Even bras, I got brand new ones recently. I was shocked to learn I shrunk a size having lost some weight (I've been the same size for years), so I may just donate the old bras that do not fit me as well anymore
Love your videos, so inspiring and real. I started doing this with my tops. As I've gotten older, I no longer wear tops that show a lot of my upper back because it has become a bit rounded. Need to improve my posture. Now I stick to more higher cut crew cut, shirts with a collar, etc. Definitely no boat cuts. I have some beautiful pieces, in this style. Any one have any tips for how to improve this part of the body?
Yes, to flatter/disguise my round shoulders, slightly hunched back, poor posture. Thank you.
See Bob and Brad physical therapists they are delightful and actually professional and very helpful!
would love to see the oldest pieces in your wardrobe.
You inspired me to take a look at my clothes and declutter. I also just ordered your book. I am new to your channel. I love your videos. Best wishes in all you do. 🙂❤️
I had same skirt years ago gave away
This is why I frequently visit thrift shops...I happily take beautiful cast-offs:)
Yes! And even I've donated things that are practically new but just not for me. I actually prefer it, and it's better for the environment and the economy too. If it just doesn't suit me, that doesn't mean it won't suit anyone, and I hope those people find it. A large portion of my wardrobe is second-hand and I am very happy about that, plus it's saved me tons of money over the years. I also have things like two cashmere sweaters I could never have bought new, at least not at the time when I bought them.
@@kittycarousel I am always grateful to people like you who donate nice clothes:):)
@Cheryl Lynne wow! What good find!
Encouraging to see that you have a few items you didn't wear as much as you thought! Surprised you didn't purge your "Mexico items" before your move because you seem so wise and disciplined about your wardrobe.
I decluttered my closet today. But now I watched your video and I think: maybe the items I hesitated about should go too.
That's it. I've committed myself to plough through my garderobe today. After watching your great tips! 👍
I'll need a glass of wine with it... keep fingers crossed 🤞
The wine is gone but also gone are 4 boxes of clothes 💪🤗 I couldn't believe how much useless stuff I've gathered during 6 years...😯
Can you send me that donation box? I would love to wear them. I’m in Texas & it is going to be 110 degrees tomorrow.
Had no idea you lived in Mexico! My country :) It´s hard to talk about "mexican" style because of its huge diversity but I would love to know your thoughts. I think here the makeup its stronger, maybe everything is more "produced". I love your content!
@@MarieAnneLecoeur bonjour Marie-Anne! You are right, it´s the younger generation. Is it like that with in France or do they dress in a classic style since young? Merida is a beautiful place but very hot and your jackets are so, so beautiful, i´m in love with them!I bet you missed them :)
Bonjour Marie-Anne!
Here in Perou we do not have second hand shops in order to sell our garments we got rid of. The solution is to donate for anyone else.
Very similar to France Ivette 👍
Merci Marie-Anne pour votre video! Could you make a video on how to properly take care of our clothes?
Hello Marie, you talked about you been in Mexico and I live in Central Mexico (semi desert) in a small touristic town, of course city cloths do not look good here, could you make a video on what to wear and look chic in a place like this??. I love your channel!!
This was a great video with good tips! Thank you 🌹 Would you ever do a wardrobe tour and a home tour?
The thing in the bottom of a top loading clothes washer is call an agitator. I have many clothes but since my weight has risen and fallen many times I kept everything 'just in case'. Now, I have stabilized my weight and I can now think of getting rid of my larger saved clothing collection. I just haven't done it yet.
Love your videos Marie-Anne. It is so nice to see your stylish wardrobe and your tips are extremely helpful. Living in Spain, even in cities like Madrid, you so seldom see well-ddressed people. Sweat pants, leggins and torn jeans are all the rage - horrible and not at all flattering. So thank you for both your advice and views on style.
You youtube channel is amazing!!!
I agree vis the wear n tear of clothes in Mexico. I live in Mexico and clothes age so quickly through washing wearing and sunshine. A small price to pay.
A lot of your Mexican memories was threw to the bascket 😢😁😂! I do the same each year, I need space for new items, But I have learn, thanks to you, to choose better quality clothes, about the brass, nice brass lasts less. thanks for this interesting video.
Marie Ann, do you have a video about stripes? Which are the most flattering?
You are so courageous!!! I cannot say goodbye to my old clothes. HOW can I do it?? Help...
I really enjoy your videos, you remind me of my mum both in appearance and personality! It also reminds me of living in France. :-)
I find trousers difficult to part with as I’ve always found it difficult to get them to fit. I’m size 4 or 6 but average height. High street always make small sizes too short!
I am the same - when I find a pair that fits I hang on for dear life 😃
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I so look forward to your channel last thing at night for me and you always take time to reply to you followers messages. This is so inspiring. Wonderful. Thank you.
Since following you I have made two major changes - the fit and style of my bra and to try flowing wide-leg trousers. So far amazing!
If you don’t mind sharing...why did you move to Mexico. And why did you leave? Did your enjoy living there. Where would you live if you could live anywhere? Hope this isn’t too personal or uncomfortable...if it is, just don’t answer. You owe me nothing and I enjoy your channel. Thank you.
Marie-Anne Lecoeur, thank you for your thoughtful reply. I understand completely moving to be with family! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Please do more videos from frumpy to chic...
I struggle with letting go of certain pieces because of sentiment. I now incorporate those items in my crafting and art. That way I still have them.
My house looks like a museum, so full of clothes and objects of the past. As they are a piece of my life,Ican't get rid of them.
Marie Kondo a la Francais

Great tips, Marie-Anne, thanks. I have no problem editing and purging my closet, but no charity accepts donations of clothing anymore where I live, and H&M’s recycling program (my usual go to) is shut down because of COVID19. Although I am on a very limited income, I live in one of the wealthiest communities in the US, and there is such a glut of consumer goods that charities only want donations of money, stock, cars, boats or land (out of my league). When going to one of the big charities here, like Goodwill or Salvation Army, they don’t even look in the bags, they just throw them into giant garbage trailers (dumpsters, we call them). I am thinking about advertising a giveaway on Craigslist, but I don’t want to be besieged with calls. Any thoughts? I hate to put clothes that are current, in perfect condition, even some never worn (weight loss is the reason for purging) into the landfill.
