David Thewlis is brilliant. He voices a few adverts too, see if you can pick him out :) Stephan Graham is amazing too, good pick. Loved him in Boardwalk Empire.
Thank you for this list. Paul Bettany and David Thewlis are examples for how difficult it can be to advance your career once Hollywood has typecast you as a certain supporting character. The best Paul Bettany ever got was being some kind of Russell Crowe luxury sidekick. And David Thewlis is great when cast as a wise and stoic bystander in costume dramas but can definitely do more. Every single time I see him as a supporting character in a movie I feel sorry for so much unused talent. It is like storing a renaissance painting in your garage.
David Thewlis 👌 Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, Anomalisa, Fargo, Naked, etc. Talented & very likeable. Carey Mulligan 👍 Paul Bettany 👍 Toby Jones 👌 - He’s talented & in many films. Love him! Helen McCory 👍 She’s great. #AllUnderrated
Penny Dreadfuls well known but very underated Timothy Dalton could be on this list even though he has been in loads of stuff and been James Bond, his acting ability is overlooked
I had to look her up then saw "Sally Sparrow ~ Doctor Who" and thought YES!!! Also, another from Doctor Who I feel is underrated is John Simm. Some of the work I've seen of his outside of Who is deserving of way more praise, acknowledgment and awards.
Eijofor is going from one role to the next. Robbie Coltrane and Brian Cox, both amazing actors, have reached an age where they either are cast very often in supporting roles, or select what they do more carefully. To call them underrated, and the same with Eijofor, would be to offend them.
Tvjunkieful12 Underrated literally means to not get the recognition they are due. In the case of all 3 they have proven themselves fantastic actors but they're never talked about in conversations of the greats like they deserve to be. Thats the point of being underrated, it's not offensive, it's just pointing out lesser appreciated performers.
This is a great list and I agree with most on it. If I was to add any, Rupert Graves came to mind. He is a background note in his scenes that you didn't realize was needed until he appears. Also I think Mark Strong would be a great add to this list. hmmmm, maybe do a second top 10 list? Thanks for this one.
filmgeek520 How can you claim she is underrated in the US when she has one Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress, and a ditto nominee for Emmy for the same role and in the same category (for the role of Angela Burr in the Night Manager)? Not to mention she was included in the star ensemble cast of the Murder on the Orient Express movie last year. But the fact of the matter is there simply isn`t that many roles for British actresses in Hollywood productions, in this day and age where they mostly are blockbuster superhero movies, horror movies or geared for award seasons movies. Back when the UK had directors like David Lean or Merchant & Ivory, there where plenty of roles for British actresses - so many sometimes, that when Marisa Tomei won her Oscar for My Cousin Vinny (one of the few comedic roles to ever win such an award), the four other nominees in the category where all British. SAG and US audiences doesn`t like it when non-Americans play American characters in American movies and tv productions. Particularly in age brackets where the US themselves have more talents than there are roles foreign newcomers are not welcome. The likes of Cate Blanchett and Penelope Cruz are established names, and for that reason are accepted and recognized as special talents which can be decisive for the success of movie. Likewise the very young and upcoming talents like Tom Holland, are seen more as an asset and re-enforcement of the US movie scene, than a competitor, since very few talents of his age have the experienced required to carry a full movie of that magnitude both on and off screen - and those that do tend to be too expensive to hire (press and hype often portrays it as if Hollywood stars are fighting nails and teeth to get a role in a superhero movie. Far from always true, behind the scenes more battles are fought to not having to play such roles, than to actually get them. Why? Simply because such roles can easily tie a talent down for 5 to 10 years - making them unavailable both because of conflicting schedules, as well as promotion obligations - if the franchise is successful - and torpedo their whole career if it is not. It is also believed to seriously reduce any chances of winning academy awards. But at the same time can be dangerous to flat out decline - without a good excuse, since both studios, directors and producers could turn against an actor not willing to help them earn a lot of money. So unless someone close to you have died, or you are on the brink of death yourself, the only reason to be excused from the obligatory " blockbuster and superhero duty," without technically be committing professional harakiri, is to blame it on conflicting schedules.). The Crown could be an entry into Hollywood stardom for Olivia Colman. But even if it is, she is dependent on there being roles available for which she will be considered. Even if she is able to deliver an American accent flawless, there will be some time before her US colleagues and the US audience will see her as anything other than British. In that regard, playing the British Queen might not be the best way break into Hollywood and carve out a future there. But if the roles are there, she could easily become a female Anthony Hopkins (yes, I know he was half Welsh, but Wales still is part of the UK).
Yes, she was great in this one - or even earlier, the 2005 Pride & Prejudice, where she played Kitty. She was incredible and it was her first role! But today I would not consider her underrated any longer, especially since she's landed a lead role in "Far from the Madding Crowd" in 2015. I which she was brilliant as always.
"Cows have only been domesticated for the last eight thousand years. Before that, they were running around mad as lorries." Stephen Graham will always be Tommy to me
Another underrated actor, for me, is Tom Hollander. One of my favorite actors. He and Paul Bettany have this amazing ability to draw the audience in with just a nod, eye twitch, or a smile.
Natalie Dormer is severely underrated! I also feel like David Tennant, Aidan Turner and Tom Hardy are underrated too and yes I know Tom is in a lot of films but academies barely recognise his talent like Bronson deserved all the awards but he got practically none for that amazing work, him in Bronson and Legend are Oscar worthy!
True. But calling her underrated is pushing it. She has been the top wanted British actress since The Night Manager and Broadchurch, because of those two roles and the popularity of those two series, plus the critical acclaim of many of her other roles besides. So calling her underrated is not particularly correct use of language.
KNIGH7 Not to forget one big Hollywood release with more stars in it than the sky: Murder on the Orient Express. When you star opposite the likes of Johnny Depp, Michele Pfeiffer, Dame Judy Dench and so on and so forth, in a movie which is an homage to the movie of the same named that starred the likes of Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall and more, I think it is fair to say you have arrived. If that role is meant to have had a US accent, and the movie is set in the US. Playing Loke in Thor and other fantasy roles and settings is one thing, but playing American roles like the likes of Christian Bale and Dominic West plays, either require the talent to be totally fresh and unknown, and also so accent perfect that the audience are not aware the cast member portraying the character isn`t American. Or, like the two before-mentioned actors, be known and recognized for so many successful roles of that type they are considered uniquely qualified and a special talent in their own right on that merit. So Olivia Colman might be on the wrong side of 40 for Hollywood mega success, since there no longer is the David Leans or Merchant & Ivory types of movies made to the same extent, as when the likes of Sir Alec Guinness and later Dame Judy Dench were catapulted to Hollywood stardom. Both Lean and Merchant & Ivory made films based on non-American material and settings, and cast a lot of UK talent in those projects. A few of those are quite highly rated but agree on Timothy Dalton he is very good liked him in loads of movies except ironically James Bond. Very good in that Dr Who episode, Penny Dreadfull, Flash Gordon, Hot Fuzz and Doom Patrol.
Paul Bettany is deeply touching as Charles Darwin in the film Creation with Jennifer Connelly and dramatically disturbing in the detective-thriller Blood with the awesome Stephen Graham! But my favorite Paul Bettany vehicle will always be the iconic and utterly campy Legion! Check it out if you haven't seen it!
Steven Cassidy Toby Jones had to portray one of the creepiest characters I've ever seen. At least in my top 5. His character in Sherlock actually gave me what we here in the south call "the heebie geebies". GREAT actor

Gorgeous boy,but I shouldn't be familiar with him for starring in an awful movie like Ella Enchanted nor an overlooked flick like Blood And Chocolate(a werewolf/human romance movie). That's my problem,I keep getting introduced to famous and/or amazing actors in less than spectacular films or getting introduced to famous movies through allusions in unwatchable or underrated films that I shouldn't be all too familiar with. What is wrong with me?
Not sure if Eva Green counts as British because she was born in France, even though she has appeared in a bunch of British films and TV shows, and I think she lives in the U.K. but she is UNDERRATED AS HELL!
OMG! LOVE Stephen Graham! As the announcer says-- he is a staggering talent! So much so that he disappears into a role so completely that it often fails to dawn on you that he is the same actor from show to show. Could Stephen Graham as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire and Stephan Graham as Atticus in the recent mini-series Taboo be any more different one to the other? And then there are his adorably angelic recitations of children's stories on BBC's CBeebies children's network! Truly-- Stephen Graham stands right up there with the likes of Tom Hardy and Daniel Day as one of the most awe-inspiring method chameleons of his generation!
MojoUK. Olivia Colman is underrated! Oscars "Hmmm. Best give her an award then". Golden Globes "Hang on a minute. We were here first. Right give her another two". BAFTA " Oh no you don't. We've already given her 3.Lets give her a film one now!!" And all thanks to MojoUK. 👍😉🙂🐇
Gangster No.1 was on TV again recently Paul Betteny is in that it's a good film and a good performance. He can play nice and nasty he's a good actor. David thingy from Harry Potter in this list is in that same movie he was also good.
Samantha Williamson I am guessing I like him for different reasons to you his wife is beautiful Jennifer Connelly dark hair and green eyes lucky fella 😉.
Personally id of put toby jones at number 1. Hes in pretty much most noteable franchises on tv and in film but is often forgotten about or given a small role
Rihanna And Little Mix I know, just looked it up at Wikipedia...my bad... 😅 Thanks for the information... 😍 I love their acting... I saw a lot of their movies but I feel that they haven't been given enough attention & appreciation for their talents...
Samantha Williamson Agreed!! I've watched movies I never would have if it wasn't for the fact that he was in them. Also, he was an awesome, evil, plotting a$$ in Count of Monte Cristo. He REALLY made me hate him in that one and I never "hate him" 😂
David Thewlis is a fantastic actor! First saw him in Dragonheart, his character was so evil it made you hate him
Lupinnn
Tob1 Kadach1 agreed!!!
I am in love with Thewlis he is so cute and funny 😏
Sexy Lupin 😘
David Thewlis is brilliant. He voices a few adverts too, see if you can pick him out :)

Helen McCory 👍 She’s great.
#AllUnderrated
THAT was Thewlis in "The Big Lebowski"??? I so didn't recognize him!
I love David Thewlis as the Shame Wizard! 😂
Don’t forget that David thewlis also played the inspector in the bbc film, an inspector calls
David Thewlis is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. But where in the Hell is Richard Armitage??????
I have no idea, but he should have got added to the list because not everybody knows about who Richard Armitage is and what roles he is known for.
I think richard armitage is very famous already
Not suitable for underrated
You completely forgot about Robert Carlyle he is completely underrated!! He should get masses of Kudos!!
Yes! David Thewlis! He is better than Brad Pitt in " Seven Years in Tibet ".
Timothy Spall is really underrated
This list is almost impossible...there are so many good British actors, whittling it down to 10 is just not possible.
David Thewlis was perfectly nasty as the tyrannical King Einon in Dragonheart!
First role I saw him in. He was a brilliant villain
He was so amazing in Dragonheart. So good at being nasty.
Great list. Rufus Sewell deserves a shout as well for me!
Great list. I love Thewlis, Bettany, Jones, McCrory and Graham.
Love how both Stephen Graham and Paddy Considine both got mentioned. Two top class actors
David Thewlis no 1
Love Paul Bettany in A Knight's Tale! Had Paddy Considine married my cousin, he would have been family!! Burton born and bred! ❤️
Helen McCrory was AMAZING on Penny Dreadful!
garbage in peaky blinders though
Love her in peaky blinders, that show is full of talented people. But Paul Anderson is amazing
Penny Dreadfuls well known but very underated Timothy Dalton could be on this list even though he has been in loads of stuff and been James Bond, his acting ability is overlooked
Carey Mulligan isn't just an underrated actress
She is also an underrated beauty

Just add Robert Carlisle and the list would be perfect. :)
michael Longford YES!!
michael Longford definitely. He's one of my favourite actors. Surprised he's not on the list.
michael Longford exactly!! He doesn’t get enough Kudos for the empathy you feel as he portrays all his characters!!
RUSH!!! He (Robert Carlise) is the only reason I've gone back and rewatched SGU so many times now I have lost count 😊💜
Angelique Lewis Rush is so hawtt!! Young needs to leave him alone!!
Also Robbie Coltrane at least deserves an honorable mention. Also Chiwetel Ejiofor and Brian Cox (no, not the professor)
The UK versions don't use HM's

Admired Thewlis since Total Eclipse with DiCaprio.

Is Olivia Coleman really underrated since she has definitely proven herself and earned the awards she got? Maybe under-recognized but not underrated.
Thomas Clifford in the states she is definitely underrated, hopefully after the crown she’ll get her long-overdue Emmy nomination

I agree Bettany is underrated and so versatile. Also Eddie Redmayne, man changes his whole stature with his roles.
Totally
Sorry but Stephen Graham will always and forever be the adorable gangsta Tommy who couldnt kill a dog even if it ate a diamond.
Thomas Clifford "good boy daisy!"
"He loves that dog, always playing silly games"

Olivia Coleman looks a bit like that woman who does the Hotel Inspector (can't remember her name)
David thewlis fargo
Personally id of put toby jones at number 1. Hes in pretty much most noteable franchises on tv and in film but is often forgotten about or given a small role
I was impressived by Paul Bettany's performance in the Han Solo movie.
Toby Jones in Wayward Pines as Dr. Jenkins...
Do a top ten coronation street moments
When I watch movies, sometimes see him but always wonder what his name is. That was Paul Bettany.
Cool List!
Where's Ben Wishaw and Cillian Murphy?
Shaz Romli totally agree with Ben and Cillian but Cillian’s not British so they can’t add him to this.
mhffc thanks for the information 😅
Rihanna And Little Mix I know, just looked it up at Wikipedia...my bad... 😅 Thanks for the information... 😍 I love their acting... I saw a lot of their movies but I feel that they haven't been given enough attention & appreciation for their talents...
Shaz Romli yeah it’s true they both seriously deserve more recognition and appreciation I’m obsessed with both of them, such amazing actors! ❤️
definetley number 1 i agree with
I was lookin for Rory Kinnear till the video ended
R.I.P. Helen McCrory
Almost 2 years late, but Joe Gilgun deserves to be in at least the top 5!
No no , for us Brits , Stephen would always be Tommy
Journeyman is currently the best film of 2018, Paddy Considine should be higher up on this list
What about Mathew Baynton??
And in 2020 I wonder where is George Mackay
Joseph Gilgun is another I feel is underrated...and Guy Pearce. I always thought Guy should be "bigger" than he is.
Samantha Williamson Agreed!! I've watched movies I never would have if it wasn't for the fact that he was in them.
Also, he was an awesome, evil, plotting a$$ in Count of Monte Cristo. He REALLY made me hate him in that one and I never "hate him" 😂
Agree with Joseph Gilgun. :) I think Guy Pearce is Australian though. Phantastic actor as well though.
Stuart Wilson
Carey Mulligan is great but she didnt stand out next to DiCaprio in the Great Gatsby
Jodie whittika in 0:49
Tobias Menzies?! Where is he on this list?!
Where's Jason Isaacs?
