I don't think that it mattered to them what others said or thought. WE call these stories coming of age. It is the story about how these two stepped out of childhood and into adult hood. I had a high school friend who had an assignment like this she had to do it with a man who was just less then 4 years older then she. later she marred the man and I got a letter from a mutual friend worried about them. I told him to back off, the last thing they needed was a third party. According to her it brunt some closer and others split up.

Weird story. I do have to admit, that in these mangas I find it hard to believe parents let their teenagers move in together. That's baby making stuff.
For Japanese culture it's not like that. She would tell her parents about the assignment having to be done co-op. Since Ayumi is obviously responsible enough to be entrusted with the care of his niece while his sister is away, Kasumi's parents would see him as being raised properly. And, there is the side benefit that if their daughter trusts, and likes this young man, there is the possibility of a romance blossoming, leading to their daughter finding a responsible and good man for a husband candidate. Things like this are not as common thanks to the influence of western culture, but it's not uncommon. Older generations still put great store on things like a young mans ability to shoulder responsibility to help his family.

In Japanese culture when people date it is on the assumption of marriage. Also they work long days and sharing responsibilities of child minding also occurs. I wouldn’t say teenagers living together is common but it isn’t something that is taboo in Japan.

It's not about backbone, it's about respect for her. #1 Nobody knows he has a niece. #2 she just called him Papa in front of the girl he has a crush on. #3 this is a Japanese way of gaining composure before explaining the situation to Kasumi. After all, he is nervous as hell around her to start with. Doing it this way gives him time to get his shit together so he doesn't come off as a babbling idiot. By traditional Oriental/Middle Eastern standards, Westerners, and Americans in particular, are a bunch of uncultured, uncouth, arrogant pricks.

Quite an interesting take to clear the misunderstandings early in the story than at the end. Also it would’ve made more sense for her proposal to live together if the person the MC was living with was closer to his age

This was nice. Kasumi and Ayumi becoming a couple after spending a week together was really nice. And it was thanks in part to Ayumu's niece. I hope they go out to the amusement park in a theoretical part 2. They're all just so sweet together.

Let's see, the MC is introduced as an introvert. That means they don't deal well with others and it forces them to be apologists in the shadows. He's also placed Kasumi into the pecking order above himself so socially, to be respectful, he is the one to lower himself, but he's not having to bow and beg forgiveness. It's also a position viewed as having sincerity, and in this translation, it should be obligated and not forced. It's a social pressure requiring the action, and the nuance is getting lost. Later, he does take charge by being the first to decide what to do (watch his niece by doing origami with her) and then having to save their supper which Kasumi burned. This changes the difference in their social levels; she sees him as having more depth, and he finds out she has flaws. After that they interact as equals, and it stands up to his sister's challenge at the end and I get a tiny whiff of Eromanga Sensei. (I agree that's a stretch especially if you're only familiar with the anime, I'm referring mostly to the living situation with the generally absent guardian(s))
As far as the male MC's being portrayed as betas or worse, it is simply mirroring current social trends in Japan with most young men being "herbivores" now. It's so common, girls are complaining about it and how they don't want to be "carnivore girls." This trend is a reflex to the reasons for Japan's plummeting birthrate. To an extent, I think the mangas have to show more extreme examples or it just wouldn't be interesting to see characters develop. Look up Horimiya (Hori san to Miyamura kun) for exactly this development in Miyamura as Hori supports him while he recovers and makes peace with his former bullies. The anime adaptation by CloverWorks (2021) is decent and slice-of-life. (The history of the story by Hero is also interesting, btw)
If you have an extrovert male MC, you either have a shonen manga, or you have the bully or a rival. It's less fun to have a good character eventually torn down from their pedestal and shunned than it is to watch an underdog come from behind, beating all the odds. (Take a look at Danjon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darō ka (DanMachi) to see both of those in action. The first two seasons builds up Bell, then they tear him down in season 3) For it to hold up in a shojo, the extrovert male usually has to be the romantic interest of a female MC. (Kimi ni Todoke or Ore Monogatari!!) If you don't have these set ups, you won't have character development, whatever got them to that point of being "successful" is prior history and now you're just waiting for Truck-kun to isekai them (or Tractor-kun in the case of Konosuba) or for it to be a food based ero-hon. (For that I'm looking at everything that came after Karēnaru Shokutaku (Translates as "The Great Dining Table" but is better known as Addicted to Curry)

so many high schooler's living on their own ... have a gal announce she is moving in with him ... don't her parents have any concerns about their high school age daughter living alone with a high school age boy ... most, if not all "normal" parents (his and hers) would at the least have questions about that.
