I blame the adults who were in charge of airing cartoons in the 70s and 80s. I mean in the 80s cartoons were made for the sole reason to sell toys not to tell good enthralling stories like most modern ones now. But we have downsides now like Illumination with their raging Minion boner that millions of sheeple eat up. But I wish studios like Aardman would get much more praise than they currently get
Great video. It may be unfair, but I really blame Hanna Barbara as the final nail in the coffin for people viewing cartoons as kids stuff. With the way most adults interacted with animation at the time being Hanna Barbara, and how the quality of their shows just plummeted, only really appealing to kids, and the disney films taking a quality dive after Walt died, just made a perfect storm of "only children would be interested in this". Then the 80's came along and just cemented that mindset with cartoons just being commercials for toys.
The moment when animation was made for and brought to T.V., that's when popular opinion or public opinion changed and the negative attitude towards all animation came about at that point. Most T.V. cartoons from before the mid '80s brought it down to a lower quality for some reason or another. The reasons vary, but because of those, it gained a bad reputation. That's why there are those who are so narrow-minded towards it in general. They just haven't been willing to try looking for better material to watch. I've always been a cartoon fan and while there were some good to great animated movies and T.V. shows I watched growing up, others I wouldn't know about nor watch until years later. And there's several of those, both from the past and in more recent years, that have grabbed me. Maybe I'm just so fortunate because I try to look for underrated but better movies and shows, and I really know how to pick them. Things would be different if more people would be more open-minded, learning that there's more to animation than simplicity and then the higher quality things would outweigh the lower ones.
I am late to this video.. but I find that animation has become much more childish over the past years. There’s no more animated films that the whole family can watch.. if that makes sense? Like the whole family could watch and enjoy movies like HTTYD, Toy Story, Coco, Inside Out, and definitely more like Disney (they’re just some of my personal favourites) - but now it’s just really childish movies like Trolls, Boss Baby, etc. It’s really sad to be quite honestly, because I really want to go to the cinemas to watch a great animated films, but I can’t when they’re all aimed at toddlers.
I can totally see what you're saying, and I do agree in the sense that the frequency of those types of films is increasing. I do think that there will still be some great family movies coming from the major studios though, so I honestly don't think all hope is lost, I would also consider Disney's recent Frozen 2 to be a film the whole family can enjoy and there are going to be sequels to into the spider-verse which I'm hoping will be good. I'd also recommend looking to independent and anime films too if you haven't done already, there are some amazing indie animated films out there (The Breadwinner comes to mind) and they do occasionally show in cinemas (at least they did before COVID). I watched The Breadwinner, Loving Vincent and Weathering With You in non-mainstream cinemas, It's worth looking out for showings to give them the support they need! I've also recently started getting more into anime and that's an entirely new world of great stuff, I know the stigma it seems to have for some reason but there are so many great anime films/series that are worth watching, most are adult or family films. I just finished watching a couple of episodes of Beastars on Netflix before doing this reply and that's an outstanding adult anime series. Others that come to mind are A Silent Voice (one of my favourite films), Spirited Away, Wolf Children and Akira but there are so many more that you can seek out, maybe check for a list on Letterboxd.
Exactly! But sadly, it also means that people are gonna look at it and immediately think it's something made just for kids :( Which isn't true. But YEAH! TOTALLY! I've been trying to get people to understand that certain cartoons like spongebob, spider verse, avatar the last airbender, etc. are made FOR EVERYONE OF ALL AGES, but people just don't get it. I can't believe I live in a world where people can't tell the difference between a cartoon made for kids, for everyone, or for adults.
Nice video. I wish ppl would give animation more of a chance and not just dismiss them as baby movies. Some animated movies have children as their target audience but lots of them have everyone as their target audience
Awesome video, animation is my favourite form of film and it deserves the praise of live action, you can do anything with it. If only film goers would see animation is universal and not just for the younger generation. The Academy should give an animated movie the Best Picture Academy Award already, The Lion King 100% deserved Best Picture 1994 instead of Forest Gump!
Thanks, and yeah same I love the animation medium! I totally agree that new films should be nominated for the regular best picture academy award and shouldn't be a sepetate category.
I've had many people tell me that cartoons like avatar the last airbender and teen titans go are "kids cartoons" because they think they're childish at times, but that's completely wrong, and it's just a stereotype. It frustrates me that people still don't know the difference between a cartoon made for children, and a cartoon made for everyone of any age.
Jeez why do people think age matters? the industry has been going in and out due to all this drama and excuses about it. And those saying kids movie is just so stupid and selfish. And all these dumb adults care about is being payed. Animation deserves way more than what it is than a art form. We even see a entire universe in there. How can adults be so naive? They all disgust Walt sometimes. They disgust the gods of animation themselves. All because of one thing. THIER DUMB POLITICIANS! Sorry I’m just very serious about everything about animation.
I thought what you had to say was a refresher on the topic of why animation is seen as for kids only. I think animation is for everyone and its a medium that needs more love and respect from the general public. Some of my favorite films happen to be animated alot like I love Toy story, Spider man into the spider verse, The Iron giant and Wall-e as I liked them then and now still. I'm interested in making my own pieces of animation as well as give people a taste of how it can be for both young and old viewers.
@@MovieMation I plan on doing so in good time as its not animation's fault that it's seen as kids stuff, it's the lack of well known mature animated works being overlooked by more popular family friendly stuff that at times panders to its viewers. And like you said, animation is great and if people saw that aspect more from it, animation would be as respected as live action gets all the time.
I'm an indie animator in the Philippines, and it's annoying that some of my friends keeps on calling animated cartoons as pambata or for kids even though we have a handful of cartoons aimed at teens like Dragon Ball Z, or even Simpsons. It's not just that, there are some animated shorts that you can look up on RUclips that tackle more experimental themes like the shorts of NFB or KIS, or even documentaries for teens and adults like Armchair Historian and Oversimplified, and some of our childhood trauma media are animated cartoons like Courage or even Coraline! So next time someone comes up and says something like "Pambata yung cartoon Ito" or "You are too old for cartoons" I'm gonna make them watch Animal Farm and Akira so they would know animation isn't just for kids! Plus it's sad that most 3rd world countries still believe in this false stigma and I think what is to blame is that 99% of the Saturday morning kid's programs contained cartoons...
avengers endgame is barely live action. There would be better movies to represent that, if Endgame wasn't (one of) the highest grossing movies of all time.
I thought that it would have been a lot better as a series and felt a bit rushed as a film. I wanted to see more of all the different places and wanted to get to know many of the characters more. I dragon's humour didn't really work for me though, Awkwafina also had the same sort of humour in Shang Chi and it didn't work for me there either. Otherwise it's good and I enjoyed it.
At least it doesn't feel condescending like other videos that talk about this done to death topic. Plus it doesn't help that there are very few adult animated films that get any public publicity. Mostly because we are kind of a "Woke"/PC culture nowadays. But keep in mind the article there was this quote: "Not all of the animators feel the same way as Stephan, though. Alexander Williams, who worked on the initial designs for Scar, said: 'I think some of my colleagues forget that when you work in a Disney movie, you don’t own it. They own it. You get paid to work there, which is a great privilege. It’s an amazing company. You get to work on this great stuff. But when you walk away, it’s their movie and they can do what they want with it. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s kind of none of my business whether they want to remake it or not.' Besides, it wouldn't be fair if somebody wants to redo this movie but yet are told they can't because the original exists.
Happy that you felt like I wasn't too condescending, I tried to make this be a video that wouldn't essentially tell people off for calling all animation childish, but would rather see how it got to that point in the first place. As for what you're saying about that quote, I can understand what you're saying and that's a fair point. What bothered me though in particular is not the fact that they did a Lion King remake (I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing the Mulan movie even though that's a remake) but the fact that I don't feel like morally it should have been been remade in the way they did it. For me the film being so identical but just having better graphics was just saying that "the original artwork is subpar, here's a better version of it that people should watch instead" it's not there to do anything else to the story other than "upgrade" the visuals and make money in the process. Mulan on the other hand seems to have been worked on a bit and seems to be in the works with a reasons in mind other than just that they think people would like something in real life better over animation and the fact that they want to make money. Sure people can do what they want with the movie once it is done (as long as they have the legal rights to do it), but that still doesn't mean that people can't get annoyed at a film being remade for reasons that undermine the original film and are very much just for the money.
@@MovieMation Though the problem was is because they didn't want to alienate audiences with too much change. Especially when some people sound like ungrateful brats who don't care if they keep contradicting themselves, and just ramble on something that could've been thought-provoking, but feels more like stroking their ego. WDAS' Revival Era was great until Frozen was released. Frozen is the worst and most overrated WDAS film of all time. It really didn't deserve to have a sequel. Ralph Breaks The Internet is a bad sequel to a great movie. Having it focus entirely around the internet and social media instead of more video games is a big mistake and a gimmick. The internet and social media are things that would become outdated instead of timeless.
