Sumela Monastery hidden high on a steep cliff | TRABZON, TURKEY

  • Trabzon is a city located on the Black Sea coast of northeast Turkey. It's home to another Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) as well as the incredible and very old Sumela/Soumela Monastery which is nestled right into the mountain slope. We visited both of these historical beauties during our short stay in Trabzon.
To get to Sümela we booked a group tour with Zenofon Tours but it actually ended up being a private tour (lucky us!). We had a fantastic and knowledgeable tour guide Ata, who gave us the time and freedom to fully explore Sümela Monastery to our heart's content as well as take us to the lesser known spot to admire it from a distance.
We chose Zenofon tours (not sponsored) because they allowed much more time at Soumela Monastery unlike some tour operators who cram a lot of additional places into the day's itinerary which would've greatly reduced the time we could've spent exploring Soumela.
Though there are still restoration efforts going on at Sumela and it can be a bit of a gamble with the weather and crowds, it's definitely well worth a visit. Don't lose your tickets and note that only the designated shuttles can go up to the base. All vehicles must park at the carpark (we saw private cars that drove to the top drop off point get denied parking and made to turn around and go back down).
    ▸ Zenofon Tours
    www.zenofontours.com/sumela-m...
▸ Our lunch spot that day was recommended by Ata too. Very lively atmosphere with welcoming and friendly staff plus tasty food.
    Tarihi Lezzet Lokantası
Address: Kemerkaya, Gazipaşa Cd. No:1, 61200 Trabzon Merkez/Trabzon
▸ First day's food spot was where we tried a local specialty of Trabzon - Kuymak. It's right next to the Trabzon Ayasofya.
    ▸ Hotel Accommodation
    Azra Suite Otel
Address: 2 Nolu Bostancı, MAHALLESİ, Akif Saruhan Cd. NO 72, 61080 Ortahisar/Trabzon

Can't wait to go to Trabzon! We are missing some rain, though we can't complain, we had rain the last 2 days.
I would be just as crazy about that cheese! Yummy!!! That Hagia Sophia looks so raw and beautiful
I share that list, Peter! We were literally 15 min away from Meteora and we didn't get to go, and I was so freaking sad!
Yes, Lieles always says the same, they are already famous, why do you have to put them on a mountain??
What a wonderful experience being there and feeling like the place is only for yourself!

Of course the opening clips are in and around food! But jokes aside, wow that hotel room there looks just so amazing! Really nice! Always the price comparison is crazy back into NZ dollars! Ah Peter any place is a good spot to eat! Also like a cheese burger on that! ALl the wonderful old architecture and just wow! The Monastery reminds me of the one in Greece I think we recently saw in the Gordon Ramsey, Gino and Freddo series! Yen how was those stairs? You both should be well fit by now! Haha! Yeah you really could spend all day there! Oh haha yeah the sheep on the road how just like New Zealand! Definitely looked good food! Once again another great job on this!

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  2 года назад

😁 the stairs weren't too bad it was hot but at least it didn't last too long. Lucky the monastery itself was nicely shaded.
