You've got the right idea. Using epoxy or castable acrylic to fill the groove and then shaping it is one way, removing the biteplate and replacing it with a section of acrylic sheet and then shaping it is another. You might want to practice on another mouthpiece first, but as long as you don't damage the metal you can redo the biteplate as many times as you want so proceed with cautious optimism and you should be good to go.

I agree with your evaluation of these old Bergs. I have one I just found that gave my old Super 20 SS Tenor that 60's rock sound and with less air pressure that old jazz sub tone sound. It is 105 1 M with "Bob Ackerman" lightly engraved on body. Has great response and is very inexpensive.

Interesting that the M is not offset. Now I'm wondering if the offset versions really are better? Or if it is just lore?

Just bought a new vintage style metal Berg Larsen 110/1 and I am in love with it. Earlier I had also bought a 105/0 and it was sweet, but I'm used to a little more open face. I'll sell the 105/0 if anyone is interested. Would like to hear some more perspectives on Berg Larsen mouthpieces, and how they compare to other brands.

So I have a 80/1 alto & a 55/0 (think it's clarinet because of the cork on it & the sizing?) both Berg Larson which I believe were both bought in the 80s in London. Anyway I think I did a boo boo and put the clarinet piece in a bowl of fridge cold filtered water for 15 mins and its gone slightly green & lost some of its black colour. I did this because when I tried to play it on my saxaphone (I'm very novice and just bought an old champion b&m sax that came with the mouthpieces) it left a bit of a funky taste in my mouth. Tried to search online and that's what it said to do and to maybe use some kind of oil. Hoping you can give me some advice on old ebonite??? Thanking you for your video!!

I do not agree..I only play Berg SS Slant tenors and my rails are not angled inwards and no sandpaper marks at bottom of table...The long table, short shank, slant sig are the best berg ever made and he hand finished these and they were made of Sheffield steel!

The inner rail edges need to be "radiused" not so much chamfered which still has an edge that creates friction

I recently found two vintage berg Larsen mouthpieces at a local swap meet. They have huge mouth tip openings at .200 & .250. Is that even playable? I’m guessing they must have been custom ordered, but who would even want a mouthpiece that big?

Because I don’t have a set up for it
Because I’m not an amazing player
Because amazing players can make anything sound like anything
Because there’s already a lot of people playing things on the Internet
Because there’s not many people talking about the physical characteristics that would enable someone to look at a mouthpiece and have an idea whether they would like it or not

I purchased my hard rubber tenor mouthpiece direct from Berg Larsen at the Factory. He had just finished making it on the Lathe.
The bore is slightly larger than the ones you get today and they sound nowhere as good as mine.
    Lay: 110/2.
My Selmer MK6 Tenor vibrates in my hands when I subtone the low B flat.
Check out on Y/Tube its sound. On my Electric City LP, issued 1970 , on which I play.

very interesting. did he hand finish it? does it look like the ones above with the chamfered rails and the hand-done finish facing?

      Hi Matt,
please excuse my late reply to your question.
It does not have chamfered rails, and don't know about the facing 'cos a while back I was silly enough to try to
sandpaper out impregnation that had got deposited in the mouth piece from the reed. and messed it up. So I had to get it fixed by a guy in Berlin, and not sure what he did to get it back to its old self.
