Thankyou so much! This explanation really helped me to understand the mechanism of dyspnea for my presentation today. I was basically losing hope when I couldn't understand anything from reading the textbook a few hours ago and this video saved the day.

I wish my doctor explained this. I saw this on my medical records and keep complaining that I need more air and notice my C20 was going up in my blood work. I also complain about chest tighten about the diaphragm. My doctor just listen to my lung and say you sound good. I get out if breathe within 15 min of movement. I have anemia, Fibromyalgia, Lymphodema, and Asthma.
Update on my previous reply.... It’s been 7 moths since I last posted a reply on this and things have slowly gotten better, even after being hospitalized with Covid Pnuemonia for 2 weeks in January. There is a few symptoms that still linger like brain fog, inability to take full breaths at times and the dull pain on the right side of my middle/lower back and fatigue. Not sure if Covid has contributed to any of the previous symptoms. Staying busy helps me through all of these annoying symptoms.
Woke up this morning and had trouble taking a full breath. I have been breathing manually a lot today and I can only get a full deep breath every 3rd breath, I know I’m breathing enough but I do have that feeling in my lungs that I need a full breath, even after taking a full breath. Any advice?
Side note: My family has no history of heart disease or any type of disease. Yesterday I went about my regular business and didn’t do anything I could think to cause this and I went to bed breathing normal, it only started when I woke up. I’m very active so I don’t think it’s sedentary habits. I did take some Benadryl before bed to help my stuffed nose.

Please help, since the quarantine my sleep schedule has been messed up. Quarantine and boredom causes me to play video games with friends until morning. I sleep at 3 or 4 am and wake up 9 or 10 am. Since then I cannot fully breath at times, sometimes I am able to fully breathe and most times I cannot fully breathe and I can feel my lungs or chest being tight or something. Last time I checked my weight was 71kg, I am 17 yrs old and I am about 5'2.
@Farouk Qosay Hey im having the same issue, constant tightness of chest and not being able to take deep breath through mouth. If you want to discuss this let me know.
Miraculously after I commented this I went back to my normal sleep schedule and when I woke up the thing that has been blocking or hindering my breathing was gone. This was a week ago and I cannot think that someone still has this. I advise to sleep early with 8-9 hours and if it gets worse there is no choice, but to see a doctor.
Lmaoo I’ve been nocturnal playing war zone all night and I’ve been struggling with trying to breathe for a day now. I’ve had this happen to me before but it usually goes away in like an hour but for some reason this is the longest I’ve ever had it. I think keeping yourself busy distracts you from forcefully breathing because I start involuntarily breathing again when busy. The quarantine probably has us so bored and stressed that I’ve been doing boring things like focusing on my breathing which messes me up!
I have been suffering from shortness of breath for last few months. It feels that my throat is blocked and I feel discomfort while breathing. It doesn't create pressure in my lung or chest that much but it seems that air doesn't flow well through nose and throat. But again, it is also associated with restlessness, weakness and dizziness in some occasion. I always take adequate water and food. What can be the reasons of this physical condition and what can I do now?
Going on a year for me. Taken every test related to breathing: lungs, heart, body, head, in my head, puffers all tests came back nothing wrong. Feels like I'm breathing through a straw and only getting 25% of actual oxygen. My nose feels stuffed all the time and gets worse at night. Forget about sleeping for me. Maybe get 5to10 minutes if I'm lucky, only because my body is so depleted it collapses only to woken up because I'm gasping for oxygen or super dry mouth because I'm breathing through my mouth. Its saddens me that there are so many of us suffering. I'm getting soo tired of this suffering way of life. I love life but living like this is not life.
How can my lung doctor diagnose me with this and then tells me I CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR YOU, LOSE WEIGHT. I'm so sick of the damn fat shaming and being ghosted by doctors

I've only gotten bloodwork done, no x rays yet but my doctor said I was fine. Idk if it could be the same thing they told you because I have it all day and night, i wake up often
You gotta start shifting your breath from your chest to your belly. Once you do that begin to take normal slow breaths in and out. Like there’s a ballon in your bellow and it’s inflating and deflating with these slow breaths. Focus and relax no need to rush the breaths just relax and breath.
Great video. I have had Covid, infection is gone since 4 weeks ago. But I still have breathing problems since then. Most of the time I'm not able to take needed deep breaths when having a smallest of physical exertion, or even when I'm not moving at all. Where would you put my breathing problem within the 5Ps that you have in your presentation?
I’ve had this since Feb. 2020.... started with sleep problems and finally had a panic attack one day when I felt unable to take a full deep breath... really messed me up as I felt like I could not breath normally, could not focus and felt like something was really wrong. After a month or so things got better but never fully went away. Initially it was so bad that I lost 30lbs in one month☹️. Fast forward 5 months and this problem is back. I don’t know what is causing this and it’s really frustrating. Some of my symptoms are upper respiratory passage dryness, cold sweats, irritability, diarrhea, unable to focus, constant burping, tired feeling... it’s just kicking my ass. Dr put me on Zoloft but gave me bad insomnia so stopped taking that. I’ve been home and off of work since December 2019 and through this pandemic so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I really need help with this. It’s really affecting my quality of life.
Me as well... it scared the hell out of me when I couldn’t breathe. For a sec I thought I was dying. It really is comforting to see that I’m not the only one going through this and reading other people’s experiences with this issue.

I struggle with dyspnoea, it often feels like I can't take a full breath. I am not overweight and blood O2 is fine (98-99). I do not feel noticeable chest tightness when experiencing air hunger. I was prescribed an inhaler which does not seem to help. The sensation feels physical, I feel like I physically can't take a full breath. However, 1 out of 10 or 20 breaths, I am able to take a full breath. It almost feels like my diaphragm or chest or stomach muscles relax or move differently, and I can take a satisfying full breath. I can't figure it out despite this being an issue for months. What can I do to narrow down the possible causes?
I also have the same brother. Mine started 2 months back. Cardiologist said everything is normal. Blood test is Normal but still I feel difficulty breathing.
I only have anecdotes to go one. I wonder if this is related to posture. My symptoms sometimes seem to get worse when I spend a lot of the day hunched forward (working on a laptop). I also have forward neck/head posture and rounded shoulders from computer and phone use. Doing some stretching and trying to unround shoulders and reduce forward head posture anecdotally seem to help (not always though, so I'm not 100% sure). I also for sure have screen apnea: I hold my breath when using screens, which could be related. When I am able to take a full breath, I put one hand on my upper leg/hip, and push up, which seems to help me be able to expand my lung capacity(?) which could be posture related? I also work out, including bench press, and wonder if anything with muscle mass / tightness in upper chest has anything to do with it. I also wonder if tightness / inflexibility of muscles (like the psoas) around my diaphragm are related. The inhaler does sometimes also help a little, so maybe there's an asthma component as well. Sharing this context in case others have similar issues.
Thanks for sharing. I think I figured out my issue, also sharing in case others want to try as well. Apparently, mine is related to anxiety, even though my normal anxiety symptoms aren't showing, I usually get the sweaty palms, fast heartrate. Now it's worse 😭
Thank you ''
So, if I have a 3 cm focal cortical dysplasia (birth defect) in my motor cortex this could be the reason for my shortness of breath, chest tightness, fatigue...
Do you think CPAP could result in a deconditioning of your breathing muscles which could lead to dyspnoea?
great video! God bless ya
what's the difference between air hunger and ventilation drive? i have a report tomorrow I need answers asap hahaha
What is the role of the corollary discharge ?
thanks a lot doctor :)
Is this related to needing to yawn all the time.
so after a workout i thrive for air hunger do i just take small breathes ? big ones? inhale exhale exercises? count? what do i do
i don’t feel like counting or working out every millisecond of the day and night just so i can breathe normally for a good 10 minutes
definitely gonna quit smoking…
So this is definitely not the sensation you feel with anxiety then ?
Major anxiety can be a cause for dyspnea as far as I know, I personally experience it alot during exam times or something like that. And when I finally had enough and went to get it checked out they just prescribed me some anti depressants, sleeping pills and some other pill I have no idea what it does.
Could be the bad foods we eat and now days foods are not healthy, more healthy eating and exercise is needed.
What are the 5Ps?
Great
Thank u
thank you so much ^^
I have been doing a lot of research lately and started looking into how closely long term Covid-19 symptoms compare to the symptoms of dyspnea. I’ve found many people in Long term Covid Social Media Groups that have these same symptoms... A large number of people began to experience similar symptoms around the time Covid started. It’s worth a look if you are looking for support!
I have long term breathing problems after being infected with Covid. My infection is gone now since 4 weeks ago but my breathing problems are persistant. You mentioned Long Terms Social Media Covid groups.
Can you forward some names of these groups perhaps?
