  • Another long day in the saddle, as the peloton rides 218.5km north from Camaiore to Tortona. Like the previous stage, the organisers have categorised it as flat, but with three categorised climbs along the route, there are plenty of chances to put pressure on the fast men.

    I’m all for racing. I also believe in the adage that you race what’s in front of you. No matter the weather, the conditions, the road surfaces. That’s cycling.
    But I also believe in rider safety and that there’s a point where that has to override racing. On dry roads, descending is as valuable a racing skill as TTing, Sprinting and Climbing, so an excellent descender should not be disadvantaged or has his/her skill neutralised.
    But when the weather is that bad that crashes become a high probability (exasperated by newly surfaced roads), I have wondered whether they should bring in a system similar to Virtual Safety Car as used in F1.
    For those who don’t know, this obliges drivers to drop speed, stop racing and stop overtaking for the duration the VSC is in play, but importantly also maintain the gaps between cars that were there when the VSC was announced.
    Maybe UCI could bring in a similar rule? Only for the longest/steepest/most dangerous descents and when weather is particularly bad. When called, riders times/gaps would be taken at the summit and racing on descent would be neutralised. Riders would then go at their own pace to the bottom, and once all riders had arrived at the Race Director’s car, they’d be released at their timed intervals.
    This was no-one would be disadvantaged by the descent being neutralised, gaps would remain the same, and above all riders could descend at their own tempo, without pressure, without bunching, without jostling, comfortable in the knowledge that when safely at the bottom they could restart racing without having crashed or lost time.

      But JM is also something, power numbers must be through the roof. Could be some really exciting sprints from him over the next few years. But will he also do another 15 as a pro? Exactly. You use your faculties to determine if you're capable of doing what is required of you, not blindly follow the results of a potentially dubious test. You may not make the call right at first, but you reevaluate as you go on. That is what pro cyclists, indeed humanity as a whole, has done for time immemorial, so it's ridiculous that this is being treated differently.

    • @stuartclough915
      @stuartclough915 Год назад

      Yeah. You are sick and exerting yourself day after day in freezing rain and road spray.
      There's another race in a few weeks unless you get pnumonia or serious organ damage from an out of control virus.
      Not to mention the risk of infecting your teammates.
      They have team doctors and are making considered decisions.
      Winning team may just be the one with the best Covid management practices.

      1. It does affect them. Remco would have cleaned house if he didn't have covid. Now he barely won by a second. That's a reduced effort of over 3% compared to the first TT. You could also notice that Remco could not follow his own pacing plan, because he was sick.
      2. They don't have to leave. But no one wants to take the risk of another Colbrelli incident, so all teams send their riders home on advice of their doctors.
