    I have ALS and took up fishing to replace my passion for shooting. Much safer option for my shaky hands! Anyway, I purchased a Stradic 2500 and love it however, I made a bonehead move. I got mono line wrapped under the entire top spinning part. This video saved me from upping my blood pressure meds

    I appreciate the detailed video. I have the exact same Stradic FK 3000HG reel. It was a great reel until the bail trip lever started pulling the friction ring up and out of place and binding the reel. Hopefully a new friction ring from Shimano will resolve the issue. I welcome any hints you may can offer, but regardless, your disassembly instructions will help plenty.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад

      You will need to ensure that the trip lever is working properly before you replace the friction ring. The friction ring should not interfere with the bail operation. It is there to stop the spool from wobbling. The reel can work without the ring. so make sure you resolve the trip lever before replacing the ring or it will probably just get torn up again. - Dennis

    I know people have told you to use the paint brush but I'd have to disagree with all of them. I did for a while and found bristles from the brushes get pulled out and hide in the grease all the time. I actually use a women's make up eyelash applicator thing now and it's perfect. The bristles are short, it's round and thin, and works well but negative on the paint brush.

    Hi Dennis, thanks for the information ! I do have a quick question.. I fish a lot out of a kayak when we go to the beach and recently got dumped coming back in .. I had three Stradic 3000FA with me.. What can I do to get the sand and salt water out of them and service and re-lube?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 года назад +1

      The best thing to do with them is to put them in a bucket of fresh water and let them sit overnight A lot of time the sand will work its way out and settle on the bottom of the bucket just from sitting in the water. If that doesn't work, you can open up the reel and use a blow dryer to dry and blow out the sand. Finally, if the sand has become imbedded in the grease, you will need to clean all of that out and re-lube it. - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 года назад +1

      That is an anti-vibration band. If it is breaking, it may be dried out, or it may be mis-installed. They don't usually break.
      The one part of it tucks behind the bail trip ramp. It is possible it was mis-installed and that the bail trip mechanism tore it up. - Dennis

    Hello Dennis, Another question I purchased a Shimano Stradic 3000 and mated it to a St. Croix Triumph Salmon & Steelhead 2Pc. Light Action Moderate 9' Rod, would it be beneficial to put carbon drag washers in it for the purposes of fishing these heavier fish or just wait till the stock one's (felt) wear out or get smoked and then replace them with carbon?

    Learned a lot by watching your videos.
    One Questions, why dont you service the line roller?
    In my opinion it's one, if not the, most important piece in a reel.
    Could u make a video, in which u service a shimano line roller correctly?
    I want to service my Shimano Stella 4000 FI.
    Would u recommend "servicing" it, if i can service a Shimano Sustain and Stradic?
    Or is the Stella a whole new game?

      I tend to rush the videos and forget to do some things. Thank you for noticing. Many of the reels I service do not have the line roller bearing, so it is easy enough to overlook. I will try to include in the future. In your case, you only need to put a drop of oil on it if it is working properly. If it is stuck, use a penetrating oil spray to free it. You do not need to disassemble it unless the bearing is frozen. If that is the case, get the reel schematic for the proper order of the shim washers and bearing and simply remove the screw or nut and replace in the order that you take them off. The stradic is no different than the others.
      Thank you for noticing and for asking - Dennis

    Great video Dennis!! I have 3 new Shimano Stradic Ci4 + spinning reels in the 2500 size. I've used them maybe a dozen times. Since the first time out with these I noticed a rough point in the spools travel. If there's a load on the reel either retrieving a bait or fighting a fish there's this rough feeling I get through the handle when the spool is furthest out from the reel body. Once the spool moves closer back in towards the reel body everything is silky smooth again. If there's no load on the reel at all like when I spun it right out of the box without line on it yet there's no rough patch in the oscillation. I also have a 1000, 3000 and 4000 size versions of this same exact reel and they do not have this same problem. Any ideas?? Thanks so much.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад +1

      My first thought is the you have a bent axle shaft, especially if this is occurring when the spool is at the top position and the axle extend to the max. If it is bent, it will have a rough time clearing the internal hole in the pinion gear and it will get caught as it slides through. You may want to change out the axle shaft and see if the problem persists. Since it appears that you have more than one of these, take the axle out of one that does not have the problem and switch it with the other that does. If that correct the issue you would need to get a new replacement axle shaft - Dennis

Today I have just bought a Shimano Stradic X 3000 GTM (Japan) and hoping to do the same. I have a couple of questions I would like to put to you please; firstly, I find it very difficult to source parts with any confidence - especially new drag washers - here in the UK. Some are offered but they are for the C3000 is this the same reel? Secondly, this video above - is the Stradic X the same?
    Sorry to bother you but before i get the tools out I want to know I will finish and get this reel into acton in the best condition it can be. Regards, Steve.

      Steve - it is hard to say what the differences are. Unfortunately Shimano has used many model numbers under the Stradic and each is slightly different. I would encourage you to get the schematic diagrams and compare part numbers to find what id the same and what is different. As for the servicing, the reels are essentially the same mechanically and you can follow this video when servicing your reel. Thank you for watching and for asking. On the parts availability, best to check with Shimano on the authorized parts distributors for your country. As for the interchangeablility of the parts between models, you will need to check those schematics. Best wishes - Dennis

    Hello Dennis and thank you again for an informative video. This video actually came at a perfect time for me since I'm considering purchasing the new Shimano Stradic FL. I plan on using this reel in a saltwater application to catch fluke, albies, and schoolie stripers. I've heard wonderful things about the smooth and precise operation of these reels but mixed opinions about their ability to hold up to splashes during use from shore or a kayak. As a person who works on reels for a living I thought you would be the best person to ask. Based on their external/internal design do you think these would hold up well to moderate use in the surf or out of a kayak? Greatly appreciate any comments you have.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  5 лет назад +2

      You are right in what you have heard regarding early generations of the Stradic. More recently and currently, the design changes have minimized water intrusion and have included a more corrosion resistant coating. I think the reels are well priced and feature rich. You should not have a problem in surf or kayak. I have liked these reels for a long time. As always, you should wash down any reel with fresh water after each use and using a drying agent like WD40 or Penn rod and reel cleaner will prolong the life and appearance of the reel. @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад +2

      Did you take the anti-reverse bearing off and disassemble it? If you did, you may have misaligned the roller bearings and springs inside. If you took it off, but did not open it up, then the most likely cause of your problem is that you installed the rotor ring ( the inner sleeve that goes on the pinion gear shaft) upside down. The ring has an offset taper. Try turning it top to bottom on how you have it installed now and see if that makes the difference - These are best guesses. Let me know if that helps - Dennis

    Dennis, this was a great video! I only have 1 Shimano and all my reels are more vintage. Wondering should a reel drag lubricant be used or any synthetic reel oil? I’ve been restoring a Mitchell 488 that uses a large Ferado drag disc under the spool. Does that Ferado Disc need lubrication and if so what do you use? Also I have not seen any Mitchell 300 reel tools on EBay but I have seen them for 302 and larger. I had never worked on a reel with needle bearings until the 488. I had to replace the main gear bearing.
    Speaking of fishing reel synthetic oils, I recently purchased a product on EBay (price was great) that had sold many units as reel oil. This oil could very possibly be exactly what it says it is, Being often a cynical person, to me this oil smells and looks like synthetic automotive oil. I have no way of knowing the truth. I will only purchase branded synthetic fishing reel oil in the future.

      Thanks Christopher. I don't lube the Mitchell washers. On the oils, They are inexpensive enough to buy the reel thing.
