This March, I finally went to Austraila to meet my girlfriend,(Because of pendemic) it was really nice being able to meet to her in person. I miss her so much now.

1. It was really nice being able to have dinner with co-workers last night. It's the first gathering after the pandemic.
2. I was frustrating not being able to do my job during the trucker strike. It had been back to normal 2 days ago, but I've been still getting lots of complaints about the delayed schedule.
3. One of the things I like about working at home is being able to do some house chores in free time.
4. One of the things I hate about my job is having to check email on weekends just in case.

선생님 질문이 있습니다.
having to를 One of the things I like/hate about something is having to~~로 예문을 만들어주셨는데 혹시 being able to 예문처럼 "I hate having to work even on Sunday" 이런식으로 동사 다음에 이어서 쓸 순 없나요?
이 영상에 나온 "이메일로만 하던 얘기를" 부분을 어떻게 표현하면 좋을지 알려주실 부운...영어식 사고로 생각이 안나요 through the e-mail 밖에 생각이 안나고..
not think about work 같이 not 붙이는 게 가끔어려워요,,, do 동사 쓰면서 don''t think about work 하는것과 어떤 차이가 있을까요,,,,
제가 가장 추천하는 것은 :
1. 우선 주어진 예문 전체를 있는 그대로 외우기 : "It was nice being able to just stay in bed all day and not think about work."
2. 패턴을 유지하면서 소재만 바꾼 응용문장 최대한 많이 만들기 : ( It was nice being able to ----- and not --- )
- It was nice being able to (just) leave it on and not worry about the battery.
- It was nice being able to play computer games all day and not be distracted. (*be distracted : 방해 받다)
- It was nice being able to eat whatever I wanted and not feel guilty about it.
💡이 과정에서 본인이 만든 문장이 문법적으로 문제가 없는지에 대해서는 일단 신경 쓰지 말고 정해진 패턴을 지키는 것에만 집중해서 최대한 많은 문장을 만들어요. 그런 다음에, 그 문장들이 다 외워질 때까지 소리를 내면서 많이 반복해요. 그러는 과정에서 기회가 되는 대로 영어를 잘 하는 사람에게 부탁하거나, 고용한 선생님에게 확인을 받거나 라이브 아카데미 실시간 방송 시간 때 자신이 작성 문장들을 확인 받으세요(이것은 꼭 필요한 과정은 아님).
이런 과정을 거치다 보면 don't 와 not 에 대한 혼란과 불편함이 대체적으로 해소될 거예요.
제가 강조하고 싶은 것은, 애초에 이것을 잘 모르겠다고 느낀 것은 그것을 이해하지 못해서 보다는 익숙하지 않아서 불편하게 느껴졌다는 거예요.
돌려 놓고 말하면, 완벽히 이해할 수 있는 설명을 누가 해 주더라도 그것에 익숙해져서 편하게 느껴지는 것과는 달라요.
즉, 이해를 하더라도 그것에 익숙해지지 않으면 결국은 말로 못해요. (노벨물리학상을 받은 박사도 자전거를 처음 타면 넘어지는 것과 같아요)
위의 패턴에서 don't think about work 가 아니라 not think about work 가 되어야 하는 것은 don't 와 not 자체의 활용법의 차이가 아니라 문장 구성 때문이에요.
➡to 부정사의 연결이기 때문에 동사가 원형으로 이어져야 하는 거예요.
< be able to A and B >
A: just stay in bed all day
B: not think about work
만약 여기서 and don't think about work 라고 하면 : "하루 종일 자면서 일 생각을 안 해요 할 수 있어서 좋았어요." 이렇게 이상한 말이 되 버려요.(동사 자리에 문장이 들어 와서)
이게 문법적인 관점에서 설명을 한 것인데, 가령 이 얘기가 이해되더라도 맨 앞에서 제가 나열한 1, 2 과정을 거치지 않으면 결국은 '잘 모르겠는.." 상태에 머물게 된다는 사실을 다시 강조하고 싶어요. 반대로, 문법적인 관점에서 이해를 못하더라도 앞서 나열한 1,2 과정을 거쳐서 익숙해졌다면 실제로 사용할 수 있다는 거예요. 비록, 문법적인 내용을 모르더라도 사용할 수 있는 실전력이 생기죠. 그렇다고 편법 같은 것이 절대 아니에요. 오히려 생각해 보면, 우리가 모국어를 배우는 과정과 비슷하죠. 일단 말부터 배우고 학교에서 가서 국어 시간에 문법을 배우는 것처럼요 😁

이렇게 쓰나요? 써놓고 보니 이상하네요.😅
@@JunghyunChang 부정형으로 단독적으로 쓸 때는 being able to not worry 라고 하지 않고 not having to worry 라고 하고요 죄책감에 대한 얘기도 It was nice not having to feel guilty about it 이라고 하는 것이 일반적이고 의미적으로나 어감적으로 더 맞아요. 그리고 be disturbed 는 내가 하는 것이 아니고 나한테 벌어지는 일이라서 be able to 나 have to 랑 보통 쓰이지 않고 It was nice not being disturbed.
위에 제가 나열한 예문에서는 to 부정사가 layer 로 이어지는 경우라서 being able to ( leave it on + not worry about the battery ) 괄호 속의 내용을 하나의 그룹으로 인식해서 부정형을 허용하는 경우라고 볼 수 있어요.
언제나 그렇지만 이건 문법이 정한 것이라기 보다는 사람들이 언어를 사용하면서 자리 잡은 규칙성일 뿐이에요 😀 (Remember that we shouldn't approach language like math)

is (not) having to 구조가 가능한 원리는 무엇일까요?
be able to 를 동명사로 being able to 를 쓰는 것처럼 have to 동명사로 쓰는 거예요. 그리고 끝에 올 때(It’s frustrating not being able to…)는 현재분사(?)인가 그럴 거예요(I’m not sure about this - can someone clarify this for me??) 😀

@@junilim622 미래에 있을 일에 대해서 쓰는 것은 문제 없으나 미래형으로 쓰기에는 약간 어색한 감이 있긴 해요. being able to 나 having to 자체가 '(이미) 그러한 상태'를 가리키는 성격이 강해서요.
반면, 미래에 어떤 일을 앞두고 있어서 지금도 좋고 안 좋을 수도 있기 때문에 미래에 대해서도 그냥 현재형으로 쓸 수 있죠 (가족과 함께 여행 일정이 있다는 것 자체만으로도 지금 좋아할 만한 이유가 되니까요)
단, 작성하신 문장은 전체적으로 너무 많은 내용이 한 문장 속에 빼곡하게 들어가 있어서 어색한 감이 있어요.
내용을 좀 나누면 좋을 것 같아요 :
