I grew up riding in a 1978 Scout II Rallye...it was dark brown with the white top and Rallye stiping. My parents drove that thing for YEARS, until if befell the plague of most Scouts, rust, rust, rust, even after being fixed and repainted several times. They were pretty much indestructable otherwise. I WANT ONE like this one...damn, sweet ride.
I want a scout so bad, I have never restored a vehicle though. What would you say the difficulty level is with a scout restoration? Is it pretty easy to find parts?
ShirtRIPPA83 I have a 1978 scout 2 that I'm currently restoring. Parts aren't hard to find because of websites like scoutparts.com. But you will be dealing with a lot of rust on the rocker panels, quarter panels, and everything under the truck
these are the good old days. When I was restoring mine in the mid 90's parts were hard to get, even basic parts could be hard to get because before the internet info was tight. Back then we relied on meeting other Scout owners out on the road and swapped strategies for getting parts.
Personally I think off road trucks of the 70's are easier to rebuild than those of the 60's, the 60's vehicles require a lot more change and modification. More stuff needs to be replaced only because its not good enough. There are a few problems restoring a scout II but not anything out of the ordinary. The cowling vents are rather large in front of the windshield and allow leaves and organic debris to fall through the slots. This becomes a problem when all that crap falls down to the bottom of the inside of the front fender. This acts as a plug and sponge essentially. The water pours through the cowling and then pools in the bottom of the fenders add to that all the organic material and it never really dries out, or takes a while. the drain in the bottom of the fender is about a pencil hole... This causes rot in the worst place, the driver and passenger floorboards, front fenders and the rockers are often bondo or cancer. The other common issue with rust they have is that its a vehicle with a removable top. The bed area has a rubber mat factory installed on the bed floor, under the rear seat, seat belts and aything else that may be bolted down. No one removed this mat, so many people would take their tops off, get some rain, no problem its all gonna dry out... except under the rubber mat. Its very common that these two spot are rotted out. Another place to look is ScoutMADness in Lubbock TX, Hes got anything you would ever need for a scout, traveler, travelall and pickups. Tons of NOS parts, restores scouts and other IH, lots of donor tubs and body parts. reman SSII door inserts.
A great restore, but the bumpers don't look right on it and putting a rough country lift on a newly restored vehicle is like wiping your ass and putting your poopy underwear back on.
