Ehh, the only thing that comes close (actually beats) the Cummins 12 Valve is either the Cummins Signature 600 Series, the CAT 3406b (and e) and the CAT C-15 IMO.
Best sounding engines of all time. 👌

That 12 valve will hold more power on stock bottom end than common rail and a failed injector on a common rail = hole in piston while the 12 valves usually misfire

Nice rig, good first tow all things considered. Adaptability is the key to success! If you haven’t already, I would go with the remote PacBrake exhaust brake, mounts on the down pipe under the truck. A good mechanic recommended it to me. He said it reduces overheating the turbocharger. I had them install one on my 01 24v HO 6 spd, the year after I hauled a 3/4 ton gas pickup with some extra fuel & gear in the bed, and my job box with all the truck stuff, probably between 8500-9k on a bumper pull. Next tow was a 9800 (dry weight) Airstream,, braking was a breeze and the EGT stayed in the sweet spot. Total game changer. Huge benefit in traffic as well.

Damn, I'd love to put that 6 speed in place of the 5 that's in my 99 3500 drw. Yeah, I know, 24v. I had a 12v in my 93 w250. Which, I still wish I had. But I needed a little more towing capacity. But now I'm looking at a 2019 4x4 3500 srw Laramie HO. It has 23,000 towing, that is plenty for what I need. It's a lot more than the 99. Going to look at it this weekend.

One thing to be carefull of with the second gen trucks when towing heavy is that the frames are weak in the back! It’s one of the reasons why they didn’t use them for tow trucks or service trucks! The odd one you do see has probably had the frame reinforced. The extra cost of reinforcing the frame made them cost prohibitive for tow trucks and service trucks!

U get a feel for things if u been driving for long I used to have 96 kw modified propane injection it would pull a full load up the west side of Eisenhower tunnel going east on 70. In hi gear with 45k in the box no matter howuch water or coolant you had just could not move it fast enough to shed that much heat. Always about 3/4 way up had to drop a gear not because of power. But heat. So I settled in at 16 and run 72 mph over the top.

You sound like you skipped the VP44 truck years completely. Mine's a 2001 3500, 5.9 HO & NV5600 6 speed, 3.73 gears. You also didn't mention what gears your 12 valve has, at least by 7 min into the video. Also, a lot of states watch for trucks towing beyond their rated towing capacity, never mind whether it works or not, it's still a moving violation. I figure my gross towing capacity at 15,000 lbs from figuring all the weights and stuff. I tow a 30' toyhauler which runs about 13,000 lbs with a 99 mustang inside. There's some tough grades on the Interstate 15 heading south west from Las Vegas towards LA, just before you get to the town of Baker. Towing with a 94 Ford Power stroke 5 speed and 4.10 gears with the trailer only loaded for camping so maybe 4500 lbs lighter, I went up them at about 35 mph in 4th gear. In the Dodge towing the mustang home in the toyhauler It went over the top at the speed limit of 55 mph in 5th gear with a lot of throttle left. Oddly enough, on pretty much equal loadings doing essentially the same 4900 mile trip around the country both trucks running about the same speeds, 60 mph unless the limit was lower, got the same average fuel mileage for the trips at 12.5 mpg. You mentioned rolling a bit of coal. I've never understood why anyone would think that's a good thing. That black smoke is unburned fuel that could have gone to making power. I dislike it so much that I'm strongly looking at various trucks and twin sequential setups. I don't intend to increase the fueling hardly any as I want my truck to last a million years or miles, whichever comes first. Rolling coal is also hard on the exhaust system because it also is an indication of high EGT (exhaust gas temp) which isn't good for your truck. I currently run a Madds Smarty tuner, for normal around town and light towing on the economy setting, gets 22.5 mpg at 55 mph cruise, 19.5 at 65 mph, and 16.5 mpg at 75 mph. I found out the last when I had to make a semi emergency drive from my home at the time in Rosamond CA, to just inside the southern border of Minnesota to retrieve a family heirloom that was going to disappear if I didn't get there soonest. I left 8 am Monday morning and was home again Saturday morning, solo. To bad I didn't have my VW yet. A 2003 Jetta TDI 5 speed, it gets 47 mpg at 75 mph instead of the truck's 16.5.

That's funny that you think anything you did was "back in the day". LOL. I'm 70+ and when I say "back in the day" it probably means before you were born. I also had my CDL, drove a naturally aspirated (!) Cummins powered truck usually pulling a pair of 20' boxes, redlined at 2100 RPM, but I loved the transmission, a 10 speed Road Ranger. Sometimes I had to drive a truck with a 13 speed which wasn't great but worked for heavier loads and then there was the truck I had to drive when I made the boss unhappy. It had 3 sticks. A brownie, which we pretty much left alone, then a 5 speed and a 4 speed, which was just so much not fun. I could do with a couple more gears in between the gears I have in my Dodge. One more between 4 and 5 and another between 5 and 6. I like to shift down low and I have to rev it more than I like (comfort for my ears, not for the truck) when towing the toyhauler. 2400 in 5 gets me 1650 or so in 6. Way to big a jump in my opinion. Also the owner's manual says not to tow heavy in 6th below 1600, 1650 is about 55 mph so any hill in CA I have to downshift to 5 not to destroy the diff. I assume that's the danger. 6th is a .72/1 overdrive and that gives about 2 power pulses per driveshaft revolution. Apparently that's enough to push the pinion through the lube and make metal to metal contact with the ring gear. Not a good thing.
So, what's the gearing in your diffs? It is a 4X4 isn't it?
By the way, my toyhauler is a conventional equalizer hitch and with the torsion bars set right, the rear of the truck drops about 1". Steers great and yeah, if you're going to tow heavy loads like that you really need a Pac Brake, or some exhaust brake. The last steep grade you go down heading east on the I 40 going into Needles is 6th gear and Pac Brake on and modulate the speed by touching the power just a tiny bit. Without it, it's 5th gear and a lot of brakes.
I enjoyed your video. I'm going to look for the one you must have made after you put the gauges in. Should be some interesting info there. I'm curious to see what your EGT runs going up a hill.

But you are exceeding the 13k lb tow rating of that truck. I have a 2021 F150 and a '98.5 24v 2500 RAM. Both have a 13k lb tow rating, yet my Dodge was identical to a 3500 with the duals removed. It also has 1100 lb ft of torque and an heavily upgraded 5spd. There is no way in hell that I could safely tow as much with my F150 as I can with my RAM. The tow ratings they use don't seem to add up. Back when my truck was new, I had a local suspension shop upgrade the rear springs a little, even though I had the Camper Package. I have had 5,000 pounds in the bed and it doesn't squat too bad. Much more stable over bumps when loaded.

AFTER PROOF READING THIS AND I APOLOGIZE NOW FOR ALL THE CAPITALS AND BRACKETS NOT TRYING TO BE AN ASS TRYING TO BE CLEARAND HELP ANYBODY WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
Anything in our home state of California TOWED/PULLED/TRAILER/COMBINATION VEHICLE of any attachment style ( bumper pull hitch or pintle, gooseneck or 5th wheel) with a G.V.W.R (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 10k ( 10,000 Lbs) MUST possess a CDL A (commercial drivers license). To clarify 9,999 #'s normal Class C license required, 10k G.V.W.R CDL Class A req. Where the confusion most likely lies is PERSONAL USE drivers example: this exact video content, a camper ( bumper or 5th wheel style), a dump trailer ect. Requires a NON- COMMERCIAL CDL due to no compensation ( money, or value gained), owned by driver all vehicles and equipment in use. Another silly law in my opinion is any vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or greater requires CDL Class B to operate. So the ridiculous thing is IF you follow the channel and know Andy's logging truck, you could drive that all day WITHOUT the log dolly on the ground with a Class B CDL but if you hook V-Belts yellow 14k gooseneck to the log truck it would become a Class A required.

@@paulrollinsjr.1845 wrong. Above 26k single requires a cdl b. Above 26k tow unit and 10k trailer requires a A license. Below 26k is good to go with normal license.

Where can I find an email for you Sam? I know it's been a fair piece since I checked in and rattled yer cage.........been cutting firewood along with working full time, I think we're up to 36-37 cord since mid September to help fund horse hay for the non-profit riding program my wife and I started with two of our dear friends for kids 5-18 years who are or were in troubled or abusive homes to offer a positive outlet for rebuilding confidence, respect, work ethic, compassion for animals and other people, and give them a chance to just be kids again for an hour. Also the wood cutting allows us to offer this free of charge to these kids who likely couldn't afford any type of cost for something like this, and we wanted it available to anyone who needed or wanted to participate. I'm trying to get my paws on a Diamond C gooseneck as Nov 30th is the end of seasonal firewood cutting on my local national forest lands and will start hauling logs with the 4th gen over the cascades from Eugene to my place in Terrebonne after an extremely generous donation came to us from a private timber company for all the madrone I could use to help fund our program as well. So I was going to email you and pick your brain vs blowing up the comments on here about Diamond C and what you've found to be useful on your trailer or not as well as you haul logs now and then with your two trailers. Anywho, big red is sounding good slapping through the 6 go ahead man box and with some Pacbrake action...........that would be sick! All in due time I'm sure but regardless the ol gal sounds and looks sweet with the Texas pride tagging along, take car Sam and give Boone a biscuit for us
