very good interview with Dr Mahendra P lama.... various things can't be said in laymen terms and in emotional basis... many things are to be handled in diplomatic nature and should have a diplomatic and well articulated approach ...change is coming for certain for Indian Gorkhas as well as people of Nepal, rightly observed by Dr lama that the youths are striving for change and change can only be met by proper education, skills and analysis of the situation....for which institutions are the back bone... the future of Darjeeling and Gorkhas residing in different parts of India can only be met by reviving past treaties signed both with India and British....

I have huge respects for Professor Lama but here he clearly evades the reality. Many foreign policy experts in India chide Indian foreign policy. They lament the rigid and inflexible FP as regards its neighbours is pushing the neighbors away from its sphere of influence. Anti-India sentiments in some of India's very close neighbours are clear and visible. It's about time India realised this and revised its foreign policies vis-a-vis its himalayan neighbours. Any country that wants to forge a lasting friendship with another country must understand the cornerstone of such a relationship is the peoples of the said countries. Governments maybe important as intermediaries between peoples but they are temporary structures. People are permanent. Anti-India sentiments in the neighbours mean something is amiss. It's in South Asia's interest that we understood this growing tension. Maybe Indian foreign policy in the Himalaya is premised upon "carrot and stick" principle. That needs to change and give way to a more modern and democratic approache. India shouldn't seek to influence all corners in its neighbours. I send my respects to Professor Lama from Thimphu. I have read his work(s) with pleasure and profit.
