    The MPC Key 37 seems really cool except for one thing -- it's not a Force Key 37. After using a Force, the MPC workflow just doesn't do it for me any more. Akai needs to merge the features of both into one device.

    I really think that Akai should consider to provide a space for a rechargeable battery pack in all of their products. Then they can leave it up to us if we buy a battery or not. I love the gear I can power with batteries because it creates so much freedom. I dont understand why most guys want black. It is a very unpractical color for visibility in darker environments.

    I always appreciate your input on synthy stuff. This has been my favorite review of the Key 37 so far.
    Personally, I have some big critiques of the MPC UI, software, or whatever you wanna call it haha. This is mostly in terms of trying to treat it as an all out replacement of a DAW. This is something I went through with the SP404MK2 as well. Growing pains and reality vs. expectation, that whole process.
    That being said, the Key 37 is the first thing that has appealed to me after trying a Force and MPC One then getting rid of those after they didn't work in the way I wanted them to.
    Being able to have a synth that has a FAIRLY capable sequencer onboard for sketching song ideas away from the studio with the ability to simply export to an Ableton set is a practical use that I can see working out. The MPC only works for my simpler compositions and basic ideas. When I approach both the MPC and SP as a CLEARLY less capable and powered tool that a DAW it makes it a much more practical situation. The Jura and Model D synths are impressive and very useful, in my opinion. The very best piano and rhodes from InMusic/Akai just don't do it for me, but I don't need those. I might replace my SP404MK2 with one of these because an SP is useless to me without a synth. The Key 37, to me, is almost like a keyboard workstation with a basic sequencer for song starting.
    Sorry for the comment being so hefty, Tefty. Thanks again for your input!

      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment! I always enjoy hearing about setups and the nuances of gear working for people (or not working).
      I actually have an SP404mk2 that haven't really done much with yet. I have to relearn the interface everytime I pick it up. Then I put it down for a month and repeat the cycle. It's a problem lol

    I have the MPC One, Key 61, and 37. I find for me, the workflow is quickest on the 37. Having 61 keys is great, and I have an 88 key controller connected to the One. But, I have found I can make tracks the quickest with the 37. Plus, due to its size, it is very easy to move around from one place to another. The 1 feature I did wish it had like the Key 61 was the ability to add an internal hard drive. The 37 does come with one, but it is too small. It would have been great to be able to add a second one, or maybe the should have added $100 to the price and shipped it with a 1 or 2 TB SSD inside.

    • @goldbrick2563
      @goldbrick2563 7 месяцев назад

      yeah, you really wonder why they left that out? They wanted to price the unit at $800...why? I think everyone would still buy it at $899 vs. $799. Because its relatively cheap to add bigger hard drive, its baffling to have such small one.

    My main issue with Akai and the MPCs is the RAM. I like the MPC key 37. I'm going to get one. It's perfect for what I've been looking for and then later I will get an MPCX but ram is my issue. Why are they so stingy with the ram? You can never have too much ram look at how much RAM cell phones have. A lot of people have been complaining about this issue so if you talk to them please tell them more. Ram these units should have at least 6 gigs of ram 8 would be even better and more storage. Those are the top two issues for me. 💯🤟🏽

    As a MPC Live 2 owner I bought the MPK Mini Plus a month ago and it has more than fulfilled any piano key need I could ever wish for. For me, the Mini Plus with its 37 keys hits the sweet spot between mobility and playability. So I can imagine the MPC Key 37 becoming a very attractive allround solution for people looking for a groovebox who also like to play keys.

    • @teftymusictech

      That's a great combo! And I'm pretty sure the MPK Mini Plus will run off the battery from the Live 2, as well. So very mobile setup. The MPC Key 37 isn't very backpack friendly, but the LIve 2 and Mini Plus could be fit into a large backpack.

    I am glad you have mentioned this factory sounds stock, I would say this is not fair play from Akai, as the key 37 has only a few instruments out of the box, when the key 61 is fully loaded with it's price. People going for key 37 instead of key 61, don't realize on the end when they will get it and load with paid sounds the price will be similar or even bigger than 61, as you have an voucher for only one plugin with key 37. Also key 61 has space for SSD and 4GB RAM instead of 2GB RAM in key 37. Something definitely to be consider for a new buyers. Thank you for honest review.

    As someone who likes to use keys and pads darn near evenly when producing electronic/hip-hop I love this thing. A big appeal for me is that it can be its own daw if need be, but it is also perfectly compatible with a daw as well.
    Also, I know it’s not exactly something you can use outside of the house due to the power outlet limitation but the unit itself is still very travel friendly if you’re someone who travels often. Very convenient to bring this and some headphones on the road with you and set it up in a hotel versus bringing your laptop/PC, audio interface, keyboard/midi controllers, synths, etc.
    The main thing that sparks my curiosity regarding this MPC, as someone that’s always just used ableton on my laptop and an MPK midi pad /keyboard set up, what is the built in DAW like? I would like to see more on what the daw itself, and the song creation process is like on the MPC Key 37. Anyhow, excellent informative video.

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! I'll say on the DAW side of things, the MPC Software is inherently limited in comparison to Ableton. Each track can have a maximum of 4 effects. So that limits things right away. Also reverbs are not the best. For audio tracks, you're limited to 8 total in standalone mode. You can have basically unlimited sample programs though (until your RAM is full).
      If you like the workflow on the MPC, then standalone mode is incredible! BUT, if you're expecting Ableton Live, you might hate it. Just my 2 cents.

    This is so close.. really want a solidly built (e.g. metal over plastic) heavy (but not too heavy) 49 key controller that has the aftertouch, a great keybed that can withstand some pounding, I much prefer the pitch bend joystick, a screen/browser to show all my DAW VSTs/knobs/etc, but with faders and knobs and 16 drum pads, and the touch strip as well, all with rgb per key/button. It's like my dream board is about 3 or 4 of these diff boards all in one. The touch/DAW VST screen of the new Komplete keyboard, with the pads on this thing, and the touch strip of the 61 key.. and the faders/knobs of the ARturia or Novation. But man.. this is pretty nice. It looks to cover most things pretty nicely. I have the Novation Launchkey 37 and its pretty decent for the price.

    Great review. Wish they had put in the features you mentioned: preamps (particularly since the support for external audio interfaces is kind of shaky, and the point of the MPC One is kind of to lug around less stuff), room for SSD (I dislike waiting for all this stuff to load).
    I didn't notice if you also pointed out that the headphone jack is in the middle in the back which is pretty inconvenient.
    I really like my MPC One, and do use a keyboard more than the pads, so would upgrade to the key37 if this had those features and (perhaps) a little more headroom (Memory). I also really, really wish it could stream audio to disk rather than treat everything as a sample.
    It just seems this should sit between the one and the Key 61, and it doesn't, which makes me suspect a more full-featured model will be coming.

    Thanks for sharing your thought on this product. The MPC Key 37 seems to fit the need of those who want to take advantage of the MPC platform but prefer to play keys rather than pads. I think it will be a very successful product.
    The one thing I would have liked to have in it is XLR inputs with phantom power to record vocals or acoustic instruments.
    I am an increasingly disappointed Maschine user looking with envy at the lively world of MPC and this product may make me jump across…

    awesome review. i have the key37 since day one and could not get rid of my mpc one fast enough. i also will sell most of my synth stuff and buy the plugins instead. i think its the perfect tool for a lean setup. but i am not at all a beats producer - so the pads were always a compromise for me until now...

    Can you tell me if the mpc keys is more efficient than the live 2? More powerful?
    If I use a keyboard master with the MPC Live 2, will it be the same thing?
    Which one you would choose?
    Thanks by advance.

      Same internal chip on both of them. You can use a keyboard with the Live 2 and get the same results for the most part. I've used the Live 2 with an external keyboard for years at this point.

    Hello Mr, in some another videos I have seen, that the Key 37 can only load 8 plug-ins simultaneously in 8 tracks in sequencer mode. Thats not enough. Is it possible to load let's say 5 different plug-ins and use them in 20 tracks in sequencer? Thank you

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад

      So to clarify, tracks are different from plugins. Yes, you can only have 8 plugins loaded total, but you can have waaaayyyy more tracks. The tracks will have targets, like plugins, or sample groups, keygroups, or pure midi that gets sent to external gear. Hope that makes sense!

    The one thing I wanted from this review you never covered. Other than saying it had aftertouch you never reviewed the Key bed and key action.
    For those of us who play that matters. I’ve also bought a few controllers online previously and had to return them due to plastic, shallow, clicky key bed.

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад

      You're right, I did forget to mention the keys. Here's the short review of the keys: Exactly like the Key 61. They're decent, light action synth keys, but fail to compete with Fatar style keys. If you're looking for PREMIUM synth action keys, you'll probably be disappointed. They're waaaayyy better than those cheap Korg keys on the OpSix/Modwave/Wavestate, but most things are anyways lol
      I go into a bit more detail on the keys on my Key 61 first impressions video.

    I think this is a very smart form factor at a great price. Key 37 compares in interesting ways to products one wouldn't at first expect. For example, it's a good alternative to an Arturia Keystep Pro for a lot of the solutions it presents.

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад +2

      Great point! Directly competes with a Keystep Pro and performs way outside of it's league at the same time.

  • @JoeSosa

    If possible, can you talk about live performance with the MPC 37 and not as a DJ but in a band setting? I’ve been looking for videos to see if this is a product that would work in that type of environment, but I’ve not seen anything. Otherwise, great job on the presentation.

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! In a nutshell, the MPC platform has one major drawback for live performance in a keys setting. All the sounds that are sample based (like most of the instruments in the paid MPC Instrument Collection) will need a few seconds to load. You can only have 8 plugins total as well. Synth instruments like the Mini D and Jura load different presets super fast because they're not sample based.
      If you're okay with the load times, then it's a great platform for a keyboardist in a band.

    Laptop with a Daw / midi keyboard, key 37 (expanded library), or key 61?

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад

      Hmmm if this is the ONLY production gear you have, I'd get a Mac Mini and a Key 37. You'd still need a preamp though to record vocals and guitars. A lot of options though.

    Live bass player here, who has to cover a lot of ground sonically so a MOOG is not always enough and I wanted to be able to sample other synths and plugins. I first bought an MPC Live 2 and paired it with a Keystep. Then AKAI released the Key 61 six months later, so I went ahead and bought it, knowing it's way too big for my duties. The Key 37 is the unit I wanted all along. I bit the red apple and bought it as well, knowing I now have to sell one or two of the other ones, losing hard earned money in the process. But the format of 37 keys is PERFECT to me. I was surprised however to find out about the lack of outputs, SSD and battery / speaker. Right now it's not possible to send the drummer a separate clicktrack through the headphones out, which is a shame. (AKAI, if you are reading this, PLEASE make it happen!) Also, I know the color red might not be the first choice for some of the artists I play with. I think it might be a good idea for AKAI to start asking their customers about their wishes beforehand, like Behringer sometimes does. I think the Key 37 would have been much more preferred to the 61. I'm pretty sure there will be a black or even retro colored unit coming withing a year and I'll bite my shine little ass if it happens. But for now I really enjoy the shorter 37-format.

    • @teftymusictech
      @teftymusictech  7 месяцев назад +1

      Quick note on the drummer click issue... you can pair up an audio interface to the Key 37 to add an additional 3-4 output. My recommendation is the UAVolt 476 interfaces. Make sure you only use the standard audio interface support and not the 32 channel version. The 32 version tends to introduce clicks and pops into the signals as the track count goes up on the MPC.

    • @bazZzment
      @bazZzment 7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for your response! I am aware of this possibility, but I'd rather have all in one device instead. And since my MPC Live 2 and Key 61 have more outputs, I was disappointed to find out that they cut it out on the Key 37. Still, it's great to finally have the right form factor. Today will be my first live show with it.@@teftymusictech
