As an Englishman and a rugby fan I remember that day with mixed feelings, I thought it was entirely fitting that Ireland won convincingly but at the same time was hugely disappointed with our performance. Croke park became a fortress that day. A great game in a great venue, full marks to the GAA for allowing it.
Beating the All Blacks was a bit special but nothing compares to the comprehensive demolition of England Rugby in the GAA's magnificent Croke Park stadium. Never has a victory over the English been so paramount, and rarely has an Irish win been so beautifully executed. It was one of the most heroic and memorable performance of all time from all of the Irish players. Dempsey; Horgan, O'Driscoll; D'Arcy; Hickie; O'Gara, Stringer; Horan, Best,Hayes; O'Callaghan, O'Connell; Easterby, Wallace,Leamy. Substitutes - Trimble;Paddy Wallace; Boss;Flannery; S.Best;Neil Best; Mick O'Driscoll. Ronan O'Gara had 100% success with his kicks, as did Paddy Wallace. My namesake Girvan Dempsey scored the opening try, others followed by David Wallace, Horgan and Boss.
It was a day to be proud of... Never in my experience has any anthem been met with disrespect. A proud moment indeed. Sean Kelly and all of the GAA people with sense and reasoning deserve some kind of award for building a bridge that no engineer could possibly manage. After all, we had our proudest sporting moment as a result.
Even tho I wasnt in Croker that day, I will never forget it! Great day 2 b Irish! Ud forget that O'Driscoll wasnt playing in the French game, so the English match was his first rugby match in Croker! V emotional day!
we have a great attitude in ireland well most of us we move on and express our pride were still learning were still a young naition but we have great hope
I cried at amrhan na bhfiann , the passion was so huge it was unreal , no wonder the scoreline was the way it was , i was so physched meself and woulda dumped tackled vickery if i had of got the chance !
Without sounding too negative I really do believe the opportunity was missed that day. We ballzed it up in the last 5 minutes when we should have won. Doh!
@johneharold the ban wasn't regarding foreign sports, just english ones. Hallowed isn't supposed to be interpreted in the religious sense, it's a figure of speech. Drug taking hardly comes into it. Do you suggest banning rock concerts?
@waaeaa regarding my children they're growing up in Europe, I live in Italy where there is far more immigration than in Ireland. What they face can be seen as positive or a problem, depends on how flexible their outlook on life is. I'd like to think they'll be open minded.
This is what makes me soo proud to be Irish! Despite the hurt, despair and pain caused in Croke park many years ago by the British, we were still able to show respect! We have been called scumbags all our lives by the Brits! I think this says it all, we didnt succumb to them, once again we stood tall! xxx
@corsellus you're right of course, had started out well but kind of got caught up in it. Irritating and ignorant comments are hard not to respond to. Anyway, was a great day for Rugby and thank fck there was a cultured crowd who showed the right respect and created a fantastic atmosphere.
Showed confidence to open it, and not disrespect the national anthem like some pubs did (playing Irish music during the English NA). You only ban things you're afraid of.
You are absolutely right. I think rule 42 was and is a sham. Imagine the outrage today if an Irish sport was banned from a field in England or the FAA decided that Irish players were not longer allowed play in the English league. We Irish are sometimes long on memory and short on sense, we want everything, but were not inclined to give anything. We criticize the English but expect them to defend us in a time of need.
Forgive me, but as an American, this is all so confusing to me so I'm trying to learn about these wonderful countries history and the meaning behind moments like these. But why were the ppl who owned Croke park against Rugby and soccer being played there? If those two sports aren't played, what do they do there besides u2 concerts?
Hurling and gaelic football are played there and these sports sellout the stadium 4 or 5 times a year and nearly fill many times more. The GAA owns the pitch and have a club in every village in ireland and its membership is 800 000 making it the biggest sporting org and NGO in the country. It has traditionally been antibritish and british soldiers massacred 14 civilians in that very stadium. So naturally they were reluctant to have british games and most especially having GSTQ sung there. So it was a huge step forward for them to allow these games to be played there
Football and Rugby are not British sports. They are international sports. The "Hallowed ground" was rebuilt via a massive input by Irish taxpayers. GAA is an archaic racist shamble
The GAA got 19 million in tax payers money the rebuild cost 260milion.The AVIVA got 95million in tax payers money with the proviso that it would be big enough for gaelic games which it is not.
Rugby was NOT the first foreign sport to be played in Croke Park. American Football & Boxing (Muhammad Ali) took place there years ago. Also the GAA was quite happy to have Rock concerts in their "hallowed ground" together with the drug taking that goes with such concerts!
I think if you actually paid attention to this video maybe you'd get your facts right, this was 6 nations 2007, Ireland thrashed England on the day 43 - 13 :)
@waaeaa you need to look at why a minority feels the need to close itself in and try and acquire strength in numbers. When Irish emigrants found themselves constantly judged soley on the fact that they were Irish, they formed Ghettos, South Boston, Shepards Bush, Hells Kitchen etc. They became notorious and dangerous places to go. With time, and mixing, people learned about the Irish, that we're not all alike and they opened their minds. Everything starts small, even hope, do the research
We listened respectfully to their national anthem, they listened respectfully to our national anthem, and then we hammered the living shit out of them.
@waaeaa good to see you looked it up. Anyway, would really hate to be you, I doubt you enjoy life very much. I along with a great deal of our fellow Irishmen am an emigrant, so I tend to view immigration differently. You see things from just one side and as long as you do that you're never really going to be happy with much. Stop whinging and carry on....oh and by the way, enjoy the Rugby! Great multi-cultural sport that it is! ;)
If the truth be known, I dont think its a case of the English feeling superior to the Irish, but the Irish feeling inferior to the English. And for the life of me, I never understood that. When the fiasco of the Italian presidency of the European Union was coming to an end, it was English newspapers, with a huge sigh of relief that said Europe was now in a safe pair of hands (referring to the Irish) Maybe our biggest battle is yet to be won, that of our own inferiority complex.
@waaeaa crime is a problem, it's a part of human nature and is generally a result of poverty and frustration. Of course some of the points you make are valid. You seem to be confused as to what a bigot is but lets not get into that for now. I personally don't care what colour a person is as long as they behave in a rational manner.
@waaeaa "Irish who go there now do not form such gangs and haven't since those days."...are you absolutley sure? What are you basing this on? A little misguided I would say. My brother in law is ex DEA, right up there with the blacks and colombians you have the Italians and Irish. You could also look at the corruption in our government over the years...or is that not crime for you? It's what's contributing to the state of affairs at the moment in Ireland
@waaeaa sidestepped what issue? The inexistant communist regime in Arabia? Come on, you haven't really made any valid points. You take one sided statistics and run with it. Races have been mixing the world over since time began and that if we look at the percentages the Irish population has one of the highest emigration rates of any country over the last 50yrs. As an Irishman, each to his own sounds quite silly. As to pointing out that you seem to be whinging, not exactly an attack now is it?
762SLR762, Armitage should have been sent off. O'Driscoll ran into him because he cut off the shortest route to th ball. That's illegal. Care was sent off cos he tackled marcus horan in a ruck whenhe was standing up with his back turned to Care. It was a disgrace. The 2 times ye've played in Croke Park ye've made an absolute disgrace of yourselves. Whereas we welcomed ye into a ground where the British army murdered 12 people and wounded 60. So in terms of maturity, Ireland is superior.
Wonder how many more truths and acts f where lost in your British Empire. "It means football's origins date back 2,300 years to when Linzi was the capital of the ancient Qi kingdom. FIFA once announced China would be officially recognized as the birthplace of football. "
To kick a ball with one’s feet has been done since time immemorial. The Egyptians played a game which involved only their feet, not hands, the Chinese did and the Greeks did. Probably even before their time our ancestors played ball games with their feet, but did not leave any written evidence. Soccer in its modern form is an English invention. The English codified soccer in its modern form, creates leagues etc. For this they did not build on other cultures variants of soccer. Thus modern soccer is an English invention.
@waaeaaalso the trends in other European countries aren't exactly fact based are they? You got Italy completely wrong for one. What is your solution? All Irish people in the world come back to Ireland? No inter breeding? Where does that leave my family? Does that mean that my wife shouldn't be allowed to move to Ireland if she so pleases? It's ridiculous, it begs insult as an argument. I feel like I'm arguing with a 2yr old, not an attack Waaeaa, but as you say yourself, each to his own(opinion)
Sorry you will have to do better than that, Hurling is on a different planet to cricket its all Instincts thats why you only can learn it from an early age.Anyone that sees it is totally captivated by it. Hurling is also oldest field game over 3k years. Gaa the governing body is something you will not find the like anywhere. Even the Yanks can stand by and say we are unique, never has a country so small has such an influence for the right reasons, your country opposite.
"never has a country so small has such an influence for the right reasons" Like what? Bigotry and Sectarianism? The Brits invented many things. Also Field Hockey is old played since 600 BC due to Ancient Greek paintings.
You really are slow, read back what you just said. You just stated my point for me!!!!. We have a sport here that very few people can play unless you grow up in it . Any fool can pick up a bat and throw a ball, just proved my point. So please state one thing that is totally unique to your country!!!, that cant be found anywhere else.
One we gave up more than we got, we lost our fishing industry, there is more oil in this country then in the UK. This country had nearly full employment for a long time. Listen ur a muppet and i'm only laughing at you. I work for an IT company that deals with UK and Irish customers, English people can not find out a thing by themselves,i have yet to deal with an Irish customer that hasnt tired to research it first. Be funny if it wasnt so sad!!!!.
lol how many times have ye 2??????????. For 40m the mighty England lol. Get over yourself. Nearly 1/4 of this country plays OUR national games, we invented field sports. How many times in recent competition did England beat us in Football??? or rugby , You think rugby is tough try Hurling, 80k ppl watching amateurs play at a professional level for pride and honour. i see you like cricket haha funny stuff, shows the difference and whats wrong with your culture.

God bless Ireland! I remember that day. What a day! The whole country sang the "Soldier Song"!
It was a day to be proud of... Never in my experience has any anthem been met with disrespect. A proud moment indeed. Do the ulster boys sing GSTQ when England sing it?

Thats clearly Arcade Fire - "Wake Up", not what you're on bout...
It is a very fine stadium.
It's time to move on a little, is it not?
What happened to the Rule 42, when American football was played at Croke Park in 1996 and 1997?
Rugby was NOT the first foreign sport to be played in Croke Park. American Football & Boxing (Muhammad Ali) took place there years ago. Also the GAA was quite happy to have Rock concerts in their "hallowed ground" together with the drug taking that goes with such concerts!

thats how you move on
arcade fire- wake up

Soccer..its fucking FOOTBALL
That was the door that started to open il never forget what has been and gone
i'd just like to point out that crokers capacity is 85,000
not quite *82’300
It's not realy the irish it's the GAA loads of people are leaving the GAA to play other sports that they will get paid to play.

That was a holy disgrace what about the people that the black and tans killed in them grounds
It was the Auxiliaries who committed this crime. They had all been officers in the Great War.They were worse than the Black &Tans.
Time to move on imagine if people still held a grudge against Germany because of WW1 and 2 which was a billion times worse?

sell outs! Is there nothing sacred anymore?
