That's an anhinga. You can hardly tell the difference between them and a cormorant, but anhingas have a longer tail, marking on the back of its wings, and a straight pointed beak. Cormorants have a hooked upper beak for catching prey as opposed to the poking anhingas do. He probably didn't fly because he was waterlogged. But it's a good thing because he wouldn't have gotten the string off otherwise. I don't know what state you're in, but they are both very common here in Florida. We had one stuck in our fishing net while my husband and I were commercial fishing many years ago. It bit me too, so I know your pain. I guess I should have doung your famous anhinga lullaby, oooh loodle loo loo loo. Hahaha! That was hysterical! Love you guys. This channel is quickly becoming my favorite along with LE's.
The anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian (Anhinga melanogaster), African (Anhinga rufa), and Australian (Anhinga novaehollandiae) darters. Like other darters, the anhinga hunts by spearing fish and other small prey using its sharp, slender beak.

Oh my this video was great,you saved the bird and you made me laugh so hard it made my surgery incision hurt,but was totally worth it. Lester you are only the 2nd person other than myself I have ever heard use the phrase sh%t fire,I got it from my aunt who grew up in south Carolina. Thanks for the laugh and for saving the poor bird.

Think that is a anhinge they dive into the water for fish!! They are really rare to see from what I hear also you have a very contagious laugh!! Love hearing you laugh!! I imagine there is never dull moment around you!!
I hope you all contacted a wildlife rehabber. Who knows how long his beak was stuck together. He is an Anhinga. They eat fish. Their feathers don’t repel water as efficiently as other birds. That way they can dive and swim underwater to chase fish. After fishing they have to sit out in the sun with their wings spread to dry out before they can fly. He probably should have been fed up before being released. He is probably to weak to fly or fish. If a wild animal allows itself to be captured, in most cases it is to sick or weak to be released without some rehab. There are some obvious exceptions to that rule of course. You all did the best you could with him with the information you had. I just wanted to prepare you for your next wild rescue. Btw, cranes have very long legs, are generally quite large, and to my knowledge no species of crane has webbed feet. Thank you for the rescue work you do.

When I lived near the beach in California, one ended up in my front yard, it was stunned and probably dehydrated, so I opened a can of tuna(packed in water), and gave it to "it". The Cormorant gobbled it up, rested a while, then flew away. 👍👍
