MI6 focusses on international security but there is also MI5 who work on security intelligence within the UK. Both organisations work together and also with the UK's GCHQ, which specialises in gaining intelligence from communications.
MI5 is a better career move than MI6. You get 25 days annual leave, rising to 30 days after you have worked 5 years with them. You get 10.5 public holidays (bank holidays) too. There are also many perks, such as fitness clubs, sport facilities, restaurants with lower prices, travel expenses covered, maternity and paternity leave, a full pension and additional healthcare help. The salaries may seem low, but it varies depending where you are placed for work in MI5. So they are miles better than working for MI6.
Wages in the UK really are that low. Back in time you would have got 40k for being any kind of respectable job, police man, fireman, train driver, nurse etc.... no more.
Hi! In the UK the most well known Sneaky Beaky building is the Big Donut or GCHQ (just look it up it’s available) it’s the place where during the Cold War all the decryption of communications was done in the big old wooden, we would call them Nissen huts, basically big single story sheds all around town. Then the new building went up and voila GCHQ, double fences, rising vehicle stoppers, security check points, you know the usual behind the fence stuff. Up until the fifties all the computer based security on things like pre internet internet was done here in the UK with all the bit and byte security code stuff invented here then we gave the US the first 128 bit secure code so that everything could be nice and friendly but secure. Then the US sold the code to all the software companies in the US, they gave GCHQ non of the profits from that, surprisingly, who knew? Anyway no sour grapes here about detent. Ok, ok ! We seamed to have spy’s all over the world pre world war 1 and it just slipped over through WWII and then fizzled out a bit. Joel am I right in thinking CIA aren’t allowed to operate internally in the USA?? Cheers Joel
I remember a friend telling me about when they Applied for a job in the MI6 building they were approached on the way home but a person who knew everything about them.
Whilst the CIA is much larger and has a more military style than MI5 & MI6, those agencies have access to UKSF (UK Special Forces) as well as the Commandos etc and they use them to work alongside MI5 & MI6 personnel, if needed, when they do this it's called "The Increment" so whilst smaller and not so military as the CIA it has the capacity as when needed. Also the whole WMD (Weapons of mass destruction) mess wasn't down to MI6 messing up it was a deliberate lie told by the UK Gov (with US knowledge and support) to gain support for the UK to go to war with the US in the Middle East following 9/11.
5:11 Shoutout to Alan Turing who helped in breaking the Enigma Code used by Nazi Germany. Sadly, he lived in a time which didn’t accept him for who he was. P.S. They did get their information right.
Alan Turing paid a part in breaking the Enigma codes. He was not alone in doing that nor the first to do so. The Poles broke the military enigma first They automated the process (probably inspired by Turing mathematical work). Dilly Knox (head of British codebreaking) broke one day's code manually (with infomation about the Engima machine supplied by the Poles) - it took him a year. Turing and Gordon Welchman designed the British version (Bombe) of the Polish Bomba.
We’re long and we’ll established at this than people realise. We’re there when we’re not and have often reacted before a reaction is called for. We don’t feel the need to blow smoke up our own arses either to demonstrate a ‘job well done’.
The most famous spy is David Fleming, the author of James Bond, he was an Admiralty spy in real life, just like Bond same age and rank, he was one of the people who came up with the Idea for Operation Mincemeat, where a dead body carrying false "top secret" plans for the Invasion of Europe was dropped off by submarine off the coast of France, (there is a movie of the same name well worth watching!) or perhaps,Sir Christopher Lee, the famous actor (Dracula, Saruman from the lord of the rings) he was one of the original OSS members during the war....when Director Peter Jackson was showing how he wanted Sir Christopher to react to being stabbed in the back ,Sir Christopher, calmly replied "Have you ever heard the noise someone makes as you stab them in the back?.......... I Have"............
OSS was American outfit. Lee joined the RAF, was disqualified from flying due to a medical problem, and joined RAF intelligence. Towards the end of the war he was involved in tracking down Nazi war criminals. Lee's stepfather was Flemings uncle.
A few things to note about British Security services. Firstly, they're a lot more secretive than the CIA and tend to keep a low profile. Thus, when they say things like, 'we don't get involved in dangerous activities' you can take that with a big pinch of salt. Secondly, the activities covered by the CIA are covered by 3 different agencies in the UK. MI5 covers UK security issues, MI6 covers foreign security issues and GCHQ specialises in cyber security, defence and attack, as well as things like codebreaking, signals and communications. All 3 have their own budgets, so the total budget for the secret service agencies is probably 2 or 3 times the figure stated for MI6 alone. Plus, as in America, there are almost certainly murky areas of the defence budget that go towards similar activities. Per capita spending on such areas is probably only a little behind that of the US, which is a little ridiculous considering the relative importance of our nation vs the US. Especially as US spending on such things is at such a high level. So, in relative terms, the UK punches far above it's weight, even though in absolute terms it can't come close to matching the US. Not that we're competing. Both the US and the UK are part of the '5 eyes' intelligence alliance, which also includes Canada, Australia and New Zealand. :)
There’s a public perception the CIA are more widely known around the world, mainly because of films and TV giving more exposure, although, we Brits do have James Bond. But a wise man should remember; You are stronger when you’re silent and your opponent doesn't know of your presence. That’s why we should never underestimate how good MI6 really is, when compared to the CIA who are more brash and out there with their approach.
The description of the Former MI6 Officer's recruitment is rather out of date. I'm not saying that people aren't recruited from Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge Universities) in that way still, but there is a much more diversity these days. I think that people initially applying for more 'ordinary' Civil Service jobs are diverted to these roles if they are seen to have potential.
I would agree with you 💯% there. I remember when I was studying electronics back in the 80s and on the Notice Board in the College was a small advertisement, it said, do you want to be involved in interesting work in the field of advanced communications? if so write to this PO Box number with your contact details. It was GCHQ. I have never forgotten that. Also, what was said in that Video is not strictly true. You only need a University Degree as an entry requirement if you are going to be a Desk Officer ( Analyst ) The Men and Women who are Surveillance Officers out on the ground are accepted with a normal level of Education, at least that`s how it is with MI5.
Don't recruit from Cambridge...These is an episode of Yes, Prime Minister when Sir Humphrey Appleby is identified as a potential agent for the Soviets and he exclaims: "I did NOT go to Cambridge!"
Hello Joel. If you get round to watching Ripping Yarns you may see an early spy episode based in the time of founding the secret services in UK. I have previously commented about my favourite Yorkshire episodes. Have fun watching Happy Valley. I used to work where it is based. It is very good, but you may need to brush up on your Yorkshire or use subtitles? Lastly you might look out for Riley, Ace of Spies, a series made for TV and Harry's Game also made for TV.
I don't reccomend the infographics show for future videos, their videos although mainstream are consistently not reliable and full of mistakes. There are at least 4 or 5 big mistakes in every video, they do not conduct proper research
MI5 work in the UK, MI6 work internationally. As far as I'm aware, before watching the video, the biggest difference between them and the CIA is they don't kill each other.
As is always the case with Infographics Videos this video is riddled with complete inaccuracies and falsehoods. Over 50% of what was stated in that video was plain wrong.
To be fair though internationally England, Britain and UK tend to be pretty interchangeable the knowledge of people to the internal nuances of other countries tends to be rather small.
MI6 focusses on international security but there is also MI5 who work on security intelligence within the UK. Both organisations work together and also with the UK's GCHQ, which specialises in gaining intelligence from communications.
James Bond really did give people unrealistic expectations of workplace behaviour and MI5/MI6.
Almost as unrealistic as governments projections of who and what they are and whose interests they really are tasked with protecting..
I know right ...a woman at the top hahaha
@@cyrus2728 If you’re not being ironic then that’s really not nice. Even if you’re joking, it’s a bad joke.
3 classic British comedies you may want to consider checking out is 1. Are You Being Served. 2. Keeping Up Appearances. 3. Red Dwarf
Absolutely! And why not "Absolutely Fabulous."

Hi Joel. I'm a MI6 agent, but I can't officially tell you that, and you never read this sentence! 😎
Occasionally dim American journalists or politicians refer to it as "M sixteen"

Check out the 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes and 14 Eyes.
UK government salaries are really bad you mainly join for the very good pension so you can retire early with maybe a million in pension.
Join the civil service and the salaries are fairly decent.
Morning Joel, I hope you had a good weekend. Ah yes, cryptographic algorithms, probably built on information first used at Bletchley Park.
This is total nonsense

Yeah, the salary seems to be a little bit low. I don't think I'd be willing to do that for that money.
