    The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, RAAS, is a hormonal system that controls blood pressure. While baroreflex is a short-term response to sudden changes in blood pressure, RAAS is responsible for long-term regulation.
    In the kidneys, within the walls of afferent arterioles, there are specialized cells producing prorenin called juxtaglomerular cells. Upon activation by a drop in blood pressure, prorenin is cleaved to form renin, which is released into the blood. Renin converts a plasma protein called angiotensinogen, produced by the liver, into angiotensin I, a peptide of 10 amino acids. Angiotensin I is further converted into angiotensin II, an 8-amino acid peptide, by the angiotensin-converting enzyme, ACE, predominantly present in the lungs and kidneys.
    Angiotensin II is a hormone. It binds to angiotensin II receptors in tissues to exert various effects:
    It promotes sodium reabsorption in proximal convoluted tubules of the kidneys.
    It stimulates vasoconstriction in systemic arterioles.
    It induces the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone promotes sodium and water retention in the kidneys.
    In the central nervous system, angiotensin II has several effects:
    It acts on the hypothalamus to stimulate thirst and encourage water intake.
    It induces the posterior pituitary to release antidiuretic hormone, which promotes water retention by the kidneys.
    It reduces the sensitivity of the baroreceptor response to increased blood pressure, so that this response would not counteract the effect of RAAS.
    All these actions lead to an increase in blood volume and blood pressure.
    Angiotensin II is short-lived with a half-life of 1 to 2 minutes. It is degraded into angiotensin III and IV, which have lesser effects.
    Overactive or inappropriately activated RAAS is a cause for hypertension.
    RAAS is a frequent target of anti-hypertensive drugs. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers are common treatment for hypertension.

    I now understand why aldosterone is produced when renin is high.
    At first i thought that this didnt make sense, because production of aldosterone is triggered in low blood pressure. I thought we already have high pressure and aldosterone is triggered by that.
    Now it is clear that the initial trigger is actually low blood pressure.
    My teacher thought i was dumb for asking about this, but i now understand it in less than 3 minutes. She just didnt know how to explain it properly and had to call me out for it!
    Thank you lots for this!

    I have the AGT gene variation of genotype GG.
    I am told this often results in holding on to more salt.
    I want to find a way to not urinate so often and not have a thick layer of soft jiggly skin on top of an above average musculature. My jiggly spare tire is odd looking compared to the rest of me.
    I'm pretty sure it's my bladder that doesn't let me sleep past 6 hours no matter what I do or don't do/eat/drink.
    Anybody have any ideas?

    But I really didn't understand how aldosterone retains water in the kidney, I thought it reabsorbs water and salt from the tubules into the blood stream.

    • @Alilamedicalmedia
      @Alilamedicalmedia  Месяц назад

      Yes, that's exactly how it retains water - reabsorbs water back into the blood so more water stays in the body and less water excreted in urine. That process occurs in the nephrons of the kidney - this doesn't mean water stays in the kidney.

    I wanted to ask if RAAS also works in reverse, for example if blood pressure is too high, then does the Juxtaglomerular aparatus sense that and decrease the cleavage of prorening and therefore secretion of renin? then as a result decreases the reabsorption of sodium and water? I know this is correct. I just want a confirmation that I am not crazy.

    • @Peaceistheanswr
      @Peaceistheanswr 2 года назад

      In other words, does renin get secreted less in cases of hypertension? does the RAAS act as a modulator to keep blood pressure within normal limits?
