Bach was not self-taught and he was a monster at creating music. Many legendary Jazz musicians are educated in one way or the other and they are highly creative in their compositions and solos. I'm not disagreeing but you can certainly still be creative knowing how music works.
All guitarists will self-teach themselves to some extent but some education is essential to shaving off countless years of mindless noodling - Sure that's therapeutic but it doesn't get you very far. Additionally, I think that being entirely self-taught can often lend itself to picking up some bad habits in theory and in practise..
A lot of players have claimed "happy accidents" when creating solos and techniques. Thinking about how to create a different sound does take imagination, and, not knowing the rules, sometimes great things do happen.
I think it is definitely a broad noticeable pattern, particularly within band culture, less so in certain other genres of performance and composition. I also think it is quite situational and personal. I definitely went through a thing of thinking notes were music, as opposed to a diagram. Experience can lead different people very different and equally valid places.
I’m self taught but I wish I was properly educated. Still I don’t think it’s necessary to be a good musician and also if I hear those exact words from an educated person it feels great. However I can not stand when other “self taught” musicians claim that it’s not needed. It’s a little bit of a dilemma I’m guessing 😅
I’m self taught. It’s not a good thing unless you’re the one in a million creative person who actually discovers something or solves a problem. As for bends… I think bending the neck looks the coolest and showmanship matters lol
If most people were to research all the artists in their cd/record collection's they would find the majority were self taught unless of course your collection is mainly classical
Professionally trained vs Self taught just sounds like a double edged sword, would it be better to have a more balanced approach, say, get taught the basics then from there learn on the journey, as you go?
Yes that would be a great approach, depending on what your goals are. You're right, I don't think it has to be one or the other. In fact it very rarely is one or the other, almost all people have a blend of being trained by someone else along with figuring certain things out all for themselves. I'm just trying to explore the pros of the more self taught approach here so that, particularly people who want to be more unique and innovative in what they do, can more easily harness that style of learning and understand its benefits. Thanks for commenting!
Citizen Kane was made by people coming from the radio. Yes they had seen movies before but they a movie in a way that had never been made before and changed movies for ever.
If you are a creative I would suggest only minimal training. The great thing is when you start writing songs/making art you will break rules that will make you stand out.
So you are trying to prove that self taught musicians are more creative than trained musicians by mentioning the people that are the exception and not the norm? Lennon, McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton are very extraordinary musicians but they are not even the 1%. They are a very minuscule group. I don't think everyone can figure it out without some kind of method or training. You can learn a lot of things by yourself but there are other things you won't understand if you don't have someone to show you the way. Sure, there are some people that were self taught that are incredible. But you should also consider that there are more people that were trained in a school or by a method that are incredible too. Also, in your video you mentioned a carpenter and a guitarist that became missile advisor(?) That's just 2 different guys doing something new. Again, those are the exception and not the norm... you need to tell us how and why self taught are better than trained with some data or investigation. The odds of someone out there becoming the next big thing without any proper training are almost 0 to none.
'Self-taught' in the internet age is very different to being ' self-taught' before the internet. When people say they are self taught now, they should credit the online tutelage they have had !
First of all, let me be truly honest. We had a Spanish guitar. My uncle used to play along with someof the heavy/power/thrash/nu metals since i was 7. But still he just couldn't modify or variate the tones or keys, which to me is utterly miserable. A true self made musician knows, not only by his brains but also his instincts what keys are to be implemented as long as they have their ears. I can do it. I expected them too. Edit : give me any song of any culture. I believe i can deliver at least the basslines in just 2 hours straight. That's self made. That's natural unblemished pure talent.
It’s interesting to think how many of those players from the 60s/70s were self taught and the torrent of new styles of music that flowed out of them. There was definitely this divide from the big bands with these jazz virtuoso types to the garage band ethos that starts in the 50s with Rockabilly. To think, Elvis never had singing lessons in his early career…
What do you mean by self taught? I learned from books/songs, a handful of lessons, and got tips here and there. I didn't lock myself in a room without access to any muaicians. People that can create out of thin air are geniuses. They would be creative geniuses with or without training. You're confusing correlation with causation. There are far too many highly trained incredibly creative musicians for your theory to be correct

Lovely discussion, well put together. Hats off, this was terrific. The examples made it easy to remember and gave me something to chew on for later.

Some times I feel like music is discovered rather than created, at least for those happye .
some of the most creative musicians I've ever known were self-taught

You are so smart!
Your compressor video was great too!
Thank you. Glad you liked it!
"Act like you are an ethernal aprentie" is an advice that can be used in any field of creativity.
I’m self taught and I taught myself to do string bends by pulling the string down not up, not great because I can’t bend the the top string now🤦♂️
"People are probably going to look at you a bit funny..." Well then, I'm already well used to that.

your make great videos buddy!
Ah thank you! Glad you liked this one, it was an experiment and didn't get many views so I'm glad someone likes it. Thanks for commenting!
Genius, like charisma, can't be taught. You either have it, or you don't.
*Genius, like charisma, can be cultivated over the course of time.
There's a fine line between clever and stupid.
Citizen Kane was made by people coming from the radio. Yes they had seen movies before but they a movie in a way that had never been made before and changed movies for ever.
I'm self taught but I often wish I was professionally trained. In fact, I wish it every day to be truthful.
Wrong attitude for a song writer.
@@Neil-Aspinall I'm not much of a song writer to be honest. More of an embellisher of other people's !
Two words: John Williams.
But also Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Bach, Pat Metheny, Howard Shore, etc.

In nutshell, because they have music director

Hello
It’s interesting to think how many of those players from the 60s/70s were self taught and the torrent of new styles of music that flowed out of them. No
There’s only 12 notes learn how to use them
Try telling that to black musicians who were classically trained and became Jazz legends. You really are a small town manc
