I love how you played just by yourself and without the context of a mix you understand that you would kind of been the mix around the guitar sound rather than bend the guitar sound around the mix
Excellent overview, the samples are long enough and clear enough that I can really appreciate the difference, and the discussion sets me up to hear the next one while giving my ear a chance to recover so I can actually appreciate it. Hats off!
One listen to your description and then hearing the actual sound that you described I was hooked this is one of my main things to get a sound to be where I want it
Your video was definitely a confidence builder for me I feel like I can explain effects very well myself and your video just sounded sonically with the headphones or through the speakers much better than most
Thanks for another great, useful video Michael. I have the MXR Reverb pedal and the setting I use the least is the Room Reverb. But watching this, and loving the sounds you're getting, you've inspired me to play around more with it and use your suggestions for that. Cheers!
Great explanation of the various types of reverb. When i first started playing, i couldn't live without a lot of reverb. I still use it but now just a little bit. Just enough to know it's there. Sometimes i wonder if one day I'll prefer no reverb at all.
Excellent examples of what type of music migh5 be appropriate for each variant of verb. I just got a PodGo - with all these &more - this info will help me a lot. Gratitude, man.
RV-6 has an amazing "hidden" Shimmer Reverb setting when you dial in the Tone knob all, or almost all the way to the left. It becomes this amazing, dark, mellow, subtle (for ambient reverb standards) sound, perfect for folks who are looking for something a bit more modern, but think that "full fat" Shimmer reverb sound is a bit obnoxious.
It seems simple but he idea of saving a hall reverb for slower quieter parts and allowing it to help you in those areas is smart, I often turn away from too washy of a verb because if I get busier I don't want it in the way but honestly it's a good reason to chill and play less notes, letting the sound do the work and enhance a song without necessarily enhancing my ego ha. Thanks nice video Michael and that Radiohead territory you speak of is real- I don't tend to think of them as reverb heavy but when they all do their thing and sounds wash together it has the overall effect of that modulated reverb sound. They seem to obsess over the size and space in any given song
Another great video, Michael! Didactic and fun as always, I love this style of editing, reminds me of those educational tv shows teaching arts and crafts but for guitar pedals lol. Keep it up, cheers!
Nice as ever Mike :-) When I use a reverb+delay setting it will as a quick and easy setting for solos, lead sounds and a more 'produced' sound. Then when I'm using a shimmer setting, that's when I use volume swells for a huge ambient organ sound! Theatre composers love it...
I have the RV-6 and tend to leave it on plate with a fairly long time (1:00-2:00) but light on the effect (10:00). Now I want to mess around with the other settings and be a bit more adventurous. Thanks for the incentive.
Thanks for another very helpful video! Your video helped me to focus on what's different between them. I know they sounded different to my untrained ear, but now I have a better handle on what makes each one distinct. Keep up the great work!
Great video! Your video on the BF2 is my favorite. It helped me get better use out of my flanger. I joined a shoegaze band and your videos helped me a lot with my tones. Keep the videos coming. Maybe something about phasers and fuzz. 👍🏽
Michael - your tone in this video was so solid that I had to give you a follow! Any way you could give a rig rundown and/or let me know what amp/pedals/speakers you're using for your gain tones?
Points to the RV-6 for general versatility. There are other pedals that do certain things better but damn that’s a wide range of solid tones - small form factor and stereo! Not a Boss man but resPect.
I prefer a spring-type reverb. I have a surfybear that sounds great. Digital I prefer the boss frv-1 over the spring setting of the rv-5 or rv-6. always looking forward to your videos. thanks :)
I ditched my reverb pedal and try to use the amp reverb instead, albeit its hard to find the sweetspot in between of nothing at all and way too much. I have a Fender HRD (classic Spring RV-Tank) and an Orange SC100 (digital Plate-RV) and usually use only a tad of reverb to moisturize my sound a bit for not being too dry. Nice video anyway😅
I had a hard time finding a reverb with contols for pitch on the shimmer setting. I found an EHX Oceans 12 which has "Pitch" reverb with control over 2 shifted decays. It's separate from the shimmer mode, which is among the best I've heard. EHX chose a poor name for that pedal because it gives the impression that it's a slight upgrade from the mono Oceans 11. There are so many configuration options. It's an instrument on it's own.
Thx so much for this. So helpful. How would you change your settings going from the studio to a gig? Do you make adjustments at the venue based on how big the room or how it responds?
That's a very good question, it's never easy to make the transition from your room to any other place. In my opinion, you should always adjust your EQ and reverb depending on the place and band you're playing with.
That's a really good question. It would depend on the situation but with the general rock pop stuff that I'm playing live at the moment I tend to use less generic always on reverbs because I find the large room of a venue usually provides that for me, although I might use a short delay instead. But for reverb sounds where it's more of a feature in the sound then I tend to crank the reverb right up so it's really obvious, it seems to sound less over the top than if I did that at home in a small room. That's what generally works for me anyway.
Oh, and if I somehow find myself playing in an enormous high ceiling hall or church type venue then all bets are off because the room can be so lively that I don't need any reverbs or even delays at all. Those are pretty tough gigs if they're with a full band because the room is just so tough to work with.
I have the Mosky Spring Reverb in my amp effects loop. Alternative types of reverb don't work as well here because they are too hi fi and don't colour the sound. Save the hall type reverbs for recording.
Your toes are very authentic sounding but you just mentioned you were emulating it so are you playing through an amp or are you playing through a modeler are you reamping or are you playing through a load box or what
What's so weird is I could totally make a shot of any one of my apps and I guess you'd think that's where the sound was coming from but I could be using my modeler
I have gotten pretty tired of the sound of my Spring Reverb, that is, the silent tone of the brokenness of the unit. 2024 is year of the Plate, so we are going to try a Brass one and a Nickle one. Eschew Failure FTW!
Yeah, the type of reverb you don't notice is there until you switch it off. Really nice if you want a natural sounding space and don't want to over do it, I agree.
Boss needs to give you a sponsorship, thanks for your great videos.
Do they not sponsor him?
I’ve been playing for 30 years and never really got a strong grip on the types and specific applications of reverb until now. Thank you!
Fantastic explanations on all types of Reverb. I only knew about, Room, Spring and Hall reverbs... now I know more. Cheers Michael.
Happy to help! Thanks for commenting
I love how you played just by yourself and without the context of a mix you understand that you would kind of been the mix around the guitar sound rather than bend the guitar sound around the mix
1:47 dude… that’s some serious rock’n roll there! 👌🏼😎🫶🏻
Yours is the only guitar channel I really need and relate to.Well done !
I always leave your video knowing how to use what I have better and not gassing for something I haven’t got. Bravo! I appreciate it all!
I really appreciate your videos, especially hearing your telecaster through the deluxe. Thank you!
Excellent overview, the samples are long enough and clear enough that I can really appreciate the difference, and the discussion sets me up to hear the next one while giving my ear a chance to recover so I can actually appreciate it. Hats off!
Great video, Michael. I spotted you playing Barney Kessel’s take on The Shadow of Your Smile. He is one of my very favourites.
Yes, well spotted! I love his version and really like the way it sounds with hall reverb. Thanks for commenting!
Your videos are very helpful, mate! Keep up the outstanding work! Cheers, brother!
Glad you like them!
One listen to your description and then hearing the actual sound that you described I was hooked this is one of my main things to get a sound to be where I want it
Fabulous playing!! Great details with reverb with actual real musical reasons for settings etc
Your video was definitely a confidence builder for me I feel like I can explain effects very well myself and your video just sounded sonically with the headphones or through the speakers much better than most
The best explanation of the various types of reverb I have heard. Thanks!
Thanks for another great, useful video Michael. I have the MXR Reverb pedal and the setting I use the least is the Room Reverb. But watching this, and loving the sounds you're getting, you've inspired me to play around more with it and use your suggestions for that. Cheers!
This video is pure gold for a newbie like me. Thanks, man!

Great idea! I'll have to try that
Great stuff again Michael. Really look forward to these coming out. Very informative.

whoah, nice playing on the hall!
I can't claim credit for that unfortunately, it's Barney Kessel's take on The Shadow of Your Smile. Thanks though!
I didn't hear any of the digital noise that I hear in other people's videos even big time guys like Pete Thorne what an excellent sounding video
Another great video, Michael! Didactic and fun as always, I love this style of editing, reminds me of those educational tv shows teaching arts and crafts but for guitar pedals lol. Keep it up, cheers!
Lovely tone, tasteful playing and very helpful. Thanks.

Hey Phill! Thanks for sharing. Yeah that shimmer setting is so distinct and dramatic I bet it works great for theatre stuff.
love you videos! Super well explained and easy to watch :)
Brilliant piece of advice, as always. Thanks!
Great demo . Nice playing examples

That's great! You're very welcome
I am starting to play guitar again after long time, and I find your videos help with how I want to play with pedals. Thank you✨
Happy to help!

I love listening to your playing!
This is the video I needed at age 18 when I just wanted to soak everything with hall reverb. Sounded great in my bedroom, awful in mixes.
Unrelated to reverb, but that slide at 1:55 was fire!
Really nice vid my friend : oh, and that Epiphone is just gorgeous ! What model is it ?
Points to the RV-6 for general versatility. There are other pedals that do certain things better but damn that’s a wide range of solid tones - small form factor and stereo! Not a Boss man but resPect.
Another really high quality and interesting video. Do you ever mess with bass Michael?
I prefer a spring-type reverb. I have a surfybear that sounds great. Digital I prefer the boss frv-1 over the spring setting of the rv-5 or rv-6. always looking forward to your videos. thanks :)
Thank you!
Great video and beautiful guitars, especially that tele deluxe!
Thank you!

Using an expression pedal to control the amount of mix/decay might usefull in any case. It only work in one certain pedal off course
That's a really good question. It would depend on the situation but with the general rock pop stuff that I'm playing live at the moment I tend to use less generic always on reverbs because I find the large room of a venue usually provides that for me, although I might use a short delay instead. Excellent, Thankyou 🎸🎶🎸
Very nice video. I only miss the reverse reverb and how it is used by shoegazers.
That's a beautiful Tele!
Thanks for the advice, will there be a dd8 video?
great video
I replaced both my RV6 and DM2 for the RE202. I think I’m gonna have them back on my board then. 😅
I have the Mosky Spring Reverb in my amp effects loop. Alternative types of reverb don't work as well here because they are too hi fi and don't colour the sound. Save the hall type reverbs for recording.
Beach House pedal. this along with a chorus/vibrato make the ultimate indie combination
Your toes are very authentic sounding but you just mentioned you were emulating it so are you playing through an amp or are you playing through a modeler are you reamping or are you playing through a load box or what
that Epiphone is EPIC
What's so weird is I could totally make a shot of any one of my apps and I guess you'd think that's where the sound was coming from but I could be using my modeler
Nice topic
If it sounds good to you, it's good.
I have gotten pretty tired of the sound of my Spring Reverb, that is, the silent tone of the brokenness of the unit. 2024 is year of the Plate, so we are going to try a Brass one and a Nickle one.
Eschew Failure FTW!
I need some help getting the sound of a mic to tape my mother goes to tape so nice but getting a mic guitar amp doesn't work so well for me
What's that you playing there a strata Telecaster
When choosing a reverb, I try to pick both a type and a setting where no one notices I am using reverb.
Yeah, the type of reverb you don't notice is there until you switch it off. Really nice if you want a natural sounding space and don't want to over do it, I agree.
Oh yeah I forgot it doesn't really matter we're just talking about reverbs in general
Modeler
One thing I have learned about reverb in most cases is that not using too much of it is usually the best choice.
