As someone who worked in child care for 9 plus years I have strong feeling what this movie may be about and I’m glad to see it. I think this movie will discuss and show us that age where young boys are soft and best of friends. It will then show the transition of when boy develop the idea of being distant and not being able to be emotionally open with one another. I can’t wait to see it. And even if I guess wrong the movie still looks good.

He was inspired by (I’m fuzzy on details, but you’ll get what I’m sayin) by someone asking boys of all ages how they felt about their guy friend(s). The younger ones used “love”, but as they asked the older boys, that word disappeared.

I just bawled my eyes out and thought of every odd behavior remi had may have been subtle signs but once you connect the pieces it's hard to not notice. This hits home because I've had countless of friends that shoved me away whenever we were seen as 'more than friends' I hate how it ends up like that most of the time, I could've still been a part of a beautiful human being's life.

I just went to see it and as a male I especially remember the moment my friendship with my best friend ended.
Just like in this movie where you're playing around and then it gets serious. It was so real for me and I felt everything that Leo and Remy were feeling at that moment.
Also never getting to regain that intimatacy with that person or any other person. Leo tries with his brother and that other kid from school but its just lost.
The innocent playing at the beginning of the move was quite short lived and I think it had a great impact on the rest of the movie because as a viewer you just wanted them to joyous and free once again.
Just goes to show us all how our brainwashed values and beliefs are completely backwards.
Were all human doings rather than human beings.

The show Sex Education touches on this. The two main characters are male best friends and they are intimate. They hug, rest heads on eachother and are emotionally connected. But it’s platonic and refreshing to see. I grew up in a strictly-religious dorm for boys for six years (middle school until high school). This happens a lot everytime someone gets close. And sometimes, they start believing they're romantically in love as well, while they simply love one another. It's crazy how the word "love" can become something to be ashamed of. It's a tender word. I love the word love. And me and my best friend alone experienced it as well back in middle school, but thankfully we're still friends until now that I almost graduate from college.

Before anyone argues that the conversation around this film must inevitably be lgbtq and the interpretation has to conclude queerness between these two characters, can we agree that it's ok to allow a story between two same-sex characters to be about heterosexual friendship? Homophobia is one topic in this film, but I think toxic masculinity and the inability to be affectionate with male friends without being labeled is the bigger topic.

As a gay man, I agree with you 100%. I'd even reckon that hinting at one of the boys or both being gay is even clishé because soft male friendship is so stigmatised, only if being gay is involved, it's allowed to flourish. I find that ridiculous. I hope both of them are either straight OR, their sexuality is not mentioned or discussed because it shouldn't matter. They are two boys who have a close friendship. That should be able to stand on its own.

I am so glad that i watched the film first before watching its movie trailer. It tore my heart apart. This film reminds me so much about how grief can makes us strong and vulnerable at the same time. I was wondering back then how little kids can experience grief in such a very young age. I think it is very possible the film may be about male relationships that involve physical closeness and affection being labeled as gay, and how that effects two boys who maybe feel differently.
if it ends up being a story about how two boys discover their love for eachother and struggle with that, it could be great too.
Though, as someone who grew up in a close male friendship, there was a lot of talk about us being gay and it really put strain on our friendship as we both ended up being straight and didn't view our friendship in that light; so I would love to see that struggle put to film so it could be explored.

I had a friend when I was in middle school, and all of a sudden, a new classmate came in and he started being distant from me. We were so close but also when he changed, you don't have to be gay or interested like that to fill this movie. We won't. We were both straight but I felt like this is the same case, but in a different engineerial. It hurt me very much to see him like pushing me away or not wanting to be my friend anymore. Just because he had made a new friend and he preferred to be with the other the other. Boy, it was very painful to say the least. And that's why I did get this movie and it's there, right, it doesn't have to be anything about being gay. It's just a friendship, and when I guess somebody doesn't want to be your friend anymore and it pushes your way. I guess I said child you don't know how to deal with this

Nothing sexual about it, (albeit it may help a lot of folks experiencing those trials and tribulations in their own lives!) For me it so perfectly captured that innocence of best friend ship as a child, wrestling around as all young men (and I presume girls) do as we are test our strengths and boundaries establishing and setting the hierarchy of out tribes (our own Little Rascals) as we are still figuring out who we are and were we fit in the world! From endless joking, challenging each other, seeking the approval of the other, yet always having each others back! Probably one of the finest pieces of direction and empathy and emotion (through production values) that I have ever experienced! Notice That I did not say "ever seen!" because one does not "watch" this film... Your heart actually speeds up as the kids running or riding through the Tulip fields with the camera racing right along with them in a car or dolly was just remarkable! And, we all remember that first time time in our own lives when our best friend and split and went the other direction, the feeling of betrayal and anger and hurt and confusion from losing that first most trusted best friend felt, even if life has protected us from remembering "that feeling all of these years" this extraordinary director struck that chord perfectly! -JUST WOWWWW!

Okay so to y'all homophobes who took over this comment section - This movie is NOT about being gay. Was Leo gay? Was Remi gay? Maybe? Maybe not. I'm a gay man and all I can say is this:
The story defenitely points out the toxic masculinity in today's society. The sexuality of ANYONE in this movie isn't the point at all. Yea, they might have felt more than friendship to each other or maybe only Remi did but we don't know that and that ain't even the point at all. The movie is about grieve due to society stereotypes. The emotions are the point of the movie. Not anyone being gay. Not at all.

You don't use that kind of terms to express friendship. Or else Leo would have said "Je l'ai laissé tombé/Je l'ai abandonné" (I let him down/I abandoned him). So there was some feelings involded. The subject matter of this movie is personal for me, because I see myself and my first best friend in these characters, as Im sure many men will. We were, forgive me, close, from 1st Grade until 9th Grade. That was when sexuality began to pervade life due to the collective puberty we were all experiencing. One day, another kid asked us if we were gay, and everything spiraled downward from there. We gradually became distant and unresponsive with each other, and our beautiful connection, one that rendered us non-blood brothers, died. One of the great banes of society is the complete and utter emotional suppression and castration of boys becoming men.

When Remy lays on Leo's stomach and back at school he's just acting like they always do....and did as small children and you can definitely tell by that scene where they are outside Remys house in the tall grass with his parents......they were taught to love.
But evil society has to kick in a destroy everything....turning people into human doings rather than human beings.

I feel like American movies lack a certain...emotional quality because languages such as German/French have phrases that describe feelings that we do not. I'll never forget seeing my first Austrian film and I thought about it for months. It's nuts how many people skip movies because they don't wanna read the subtitles. I have a friend whose dyslexic and I used to read the subtitles to her in Asian movies because she liked them, but wasn't good at reading quickly. I loved how animated I used to get. I wasn't gonna go see this because of the subtitles.
I just can't read fast but this movie was a perfect speed for me and I think the different language added a lot to the emotion of the movie.
As a brain dead American I thought that with Leo's parents working in the fields with the flowers that it took place in Amsterdam but couldn't understand why they said merci a lot when they were Dutch. I had to think a bit until I realized that France is pretty close by.
Definitely had to Google where the movie to place after I got out of the theater.
I thought about how even in a more caring and loving culture ( not America at all) that these society pressures are forced on us literally at our first breath as a newborn until our last dying breath.
Our value and beliefs systems around the globe are pretty much only feeding the machine.....not our souls.
Are we just human doings rather than human beings?
This movie was intense for me. All the scenes were very emotional and brought back some of my childhood memories....but especially the scene after Remi passed and they were at the music recital and the camera kept getting closer to Remis mother. That was super powerful.
As a conditioned America male I thought this movie was fantastic and I only hope that people can open their eyes and see what is being communicated because its a brilliant piece of work.

This is heartbreaking to see, especially after my son's best buddy and friend simply ghosted him after they started secondary school this September... 😔 They were inseparable for 9 years, they have been best friends since they were 4 and after graduation, in the summer my son desperately wanted to meet up with him, but he was always unavailable. We texted them, called them several times - no luck. So my son just gave up. Fortunately he is quite resilient and he is trying to make new friends, but I am sure that this thing bothers him a lot. Nothing happened between them, they didn't argue, they didn't fight, they just don't talk or meet anymore from one day to another. It's sad really.

I did what Leo did when I went to Jr High. I was friends with him since we were very young and found a new friend group and ghosted him. Must have broken his heart pretty bad cause he won't have anything to do with me on social media. One of my biggest regrets.

This is a beautiful masterpiece. 24 hours later and I am still thinking of this movie and probably will for a long time. One of my favorite movies I’ve seen this year. Possibly in my top 5 definitely in my top 10 of all time. The beautiful acting of the young characters speaking without words, the beautiful cinematography with colors that were visually appealing, and the music behind it all. Just stunning! The story shows an agape love that has grown between two boys with such platonic intimacy it’s beautiful. However, when they enter school that love is considered gay to the other school kids. It shows us that our continuing social norms is being passed down and placed on other children especially on young boys/men as to considered deep platonic intimacy as anything other than that.

As someone who's a Mother of a boy not short of 12 and aunt to a nephew not short of 14, well, this film hit me HARD. I also have a darling niece who's just turned 8. I am also surrounded by cousins' offspring on a regular basis, plus friends of my boy, SO, I think I can opine. This film is a WAKE UP CALL. This film is SENSITIVE, and this film teaches us WE, AS PARENTS, AS GUARDIANS, AS TEACHERS, AS PREACHERS, AND AS MENTORS, SHOULD KEEP A CLOSE EYE WITHOUT BEING INVASIVE OR PERVERTIVE. WE ARE OLDER AND WE SHOULD TEACH. WE SHOULD TEACH THEM TO BE STRONG, HONOURED, AND HAPPY. PERIOD. 0 ABUSE, 0 PERSONAL DRAMA ON OUR PART, 0 ABSENTMINDEDNESS. That's why we're called ADULTS!

This film is absolutely the saddest film in this decade after "Hatchi a dog tale" I have never felt this sort of anger or sadness over a movie (because I'm used to get affected by them like series) it was too much that I wasn't able to finish it when I got to the middle of it 💔 The movie talks about two kids who are so in love with each other, so pure, so lovely that you'd wish that you had such a friendship in your younger. The two starts to get separated after they get to middle school, and the way the story went was 💔 I just have no words till now to describe how sad it becomes and how agony it made me feel when it happened 💔
The movie "Close" is a children story, but not for children to watch _believe me in that. So, what hurts the most about it is how it makes you wish that it is only a dream and the main character is going to wake up eventually and the story would be WOW still, moreover, it makes you feel lost and witness the regret in a hard way. Okay I can talk no more about this film, for it hurts badly. 💔

I have been putting this movie on my watchlist since months ago, I couldn't really recall. I had a very different idea on how the movie was going to be about a while ago, not like the general thoughts everyone else had tho. Finally I watched it on the 31st of May this year, it was very heart wrenching. All I could say is, I've been in this situation really closely and it definitely hurt me very terribly, actually it just happened recently but the difference is, we are on our last teen. Quite old, people started to notice how close we were, but on my side, I never really mind, just like Remi did. It was quite the opposite for my other friend, he chose the same path Leo took. Long story short, it happened last month, but the pain is still there after all these time. I never really had my closure, but I hope that I could get it, or maybe it'll never be. Who knows? Luckily enough, I didn't choose to walk the same path Remi took, although I almost did. Really loved this film!

I suppose after a lifetime, looking back, I see myself in this film. I was walking my big Alsatian dog, 'bite' in the park and saw a boy sailing a home made yacht in the huge pond. Also the local Vicar who I knew a bit, was rowing a hired dinghy. The yacht began to sink. I yelled at Gordon, the Vicar to rescue it, and he did. That was the start of a friendship that lasted from age 8 to 15. At first, Nikka, the boy from down the street, was just a friend, we played together, went roller skating, took trips with both our parents, who accepted us like 2 kids and thought nothing of it. After a while, I sort of half realised that I was in love with him, and he with me. Nothing gay, just plain love and wanting him to be happy. Oh, we did have fun! Neither of us ever wondered about our friendship, we just enjoyed being with each other. We did have other friends, no problem, but when we got to about 14, a nasty boy called us 'queers'. I didnt know what that meant, but Nikka did, and hit the bully on the nose. There was a fight, which I joined in, we were separated by the man who lived next door, as this happened in the street. The bully started spreading rumours about us, and of course we said he was a liar, but people began to think, as we were so close, you know, hard to deny it. The next year was difficult, and eventually his parents decided to go back to Denmark, where they originally came from. Both Nikka and I were devastated, I didnt know what to do with myself for years following that. We did visit each other a few times, but it wasn't the same, that beautiful part of my childhood had ended forever. I still think of him a lot, even though I am married with 3 kids, 2 girls and a boy. I will let them all live a life that they want, they are happy and love me and wife, and each other ( except for occasional silly arguments- girls v. boy, guess who wins!!?? Oh well, that's life I suppose.
