House of Balloons defined my Junior year of high school man. No one knew what he looked like when these mixtapes came out, but everyone knew something special was on the horizon.
That’s crazy, what an awesome time it would’ve been to witness the start of it like that!!
Ahhh you missed it! In "The Morning", theres one lyric "Cali is the mission" and through his albums he mentions this line quite a bit- for example in After Hours "Snowchild" theres "Cali was the mission" and i thought you'd notice it, but no problem you didn't haha
I know!!! I actually caught it later on, that’s really awesome!!! Love the way he called back to it!!
On the title track, the first half (HOB) feels like the party leading up to midnight. Plenty of people. Some drinking. Some drugs. Slowly descending deeper and deeper and trying to convince yourself that everything is okay and you’re still having a good time in this happy house. Trying to convince and manipulate the girl you’ve been flirting with all night to follow you as your mind begins to slip away. Then the second half (GTG) feels like it’s now past midnight. The casuals start to leave. The hard drugs come out. It’s no longer really a party. It’s pure euphoria. Anxiety. Lust. Suffocation. Escape from reality.
That’s a great description, really adds a different tone when you think of it like that!!

Not use to you not pausing, the whole first song I was thinking, bro is sad or hates the song /: 😭 R & B artist we’re not hoping on beats like this back then, it’s even more clear now how revolutionary these mixtapes were. His producer Illangelo said he likes to add/take away sounds about every 7 bars so theres always something else coming. Truly wishing you success with this channel, it’s a blessing to get full reviews with commentary 💐

You made my Friday night!! I saw your post and literally screamed, fuck yeah!! I love his early work it's so raw and the guitars give it that edge High for This is such a great introduction to this mix tape and very underrated in my opinion. I love this sound. A very dark and depressing time for him but made him what he is today. We'll never get this back so soak it up! I'm glad you enjoyed it, I know it's different from his new stuff but it's revolutionary. Abel's early influences were Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, indie rock, Micheal Jackson and Prince to name a few. Thanks for the great reaction! Definitely ready for Thursday! BTW, I think Abel's music has a difference in opinion depending on when you became a fan since his music is different from album to album. Some love it all (me). 🔥 XO

I honestly prefer the trilogy sound vs dawn fm. I’m not a huge 80s dance pop fan. I just love his darker sounding slow music. I honestly have never listened to trilogy because I know it’s like a remastered version and I rather listen to the originals. I listen to each mixtape separately and then I have the 3 bonus tracks downloaded from trilogy 😂
I could see that for sure honestly, I’ve enjoyed both. But there’s definitely a distinct difference. And I haven’t listened to the OG mixtapes. Only the Trilogy versions 😬😬
