I love your thoughts about regulations and completely agree. I'm allergic to corn, and it's in EVERYTHING. The allergy argument makes me absolutely livid, because from the age of 7 I could, and did, read food labels myself and was taught to be aware of what I ate, and that it was *my* responsibility to look out for myself...nobody else's. Corn starch is contained in many body products like lotions, deodorants and foot powders. Corn derivatives are in some vaccines too. So I don't particularly feel any sympathy for people who whine about needing everything removed or heavily regulated. If a young child can deal with pervasive allergens on an almost daily basis (and sometimes turn down the only snacks provided at events or sporting meets) adults can certainly monitor which perfumes contain allergenic ingredients to them, fragrances are optional, eating isn't. But everyone should be culpable for what happens to them, not the rest of the world.

One of the ingredients is oak moss...and oak moss finishes a fragrance like nothing else can. So that I can maintain my stash, my daughter encouraged me to learn about and try new fragrances, which I began in November 2023. I have built my collection from one fragrance to about 110 fragrances in 6 months...and included in that are vintage/recently discontinued fragrances. I learned the hard way that I don't want to be without some of my classics. Most recently I bought a "lot" of 8 vintage fragrances...which included a nearly full bottle of Chanel Coco EDT. As best I can tell, they are all from 1985. There is a bottle of a perfume called Reading In Paris that I can't wait to try.

I totally agree with you on this even though I have experienced skin problems myself. Back in 1981 I bought Kouros when it came out, I have suffered from terrible psoriasis and it used make it flair up so I used it on my clothes. I did not stop buying it until the formulation was watered down! Why should the majority who don’t have these problems suffer because of IFRA regulations when it affects a small percentage of people. Perhaps new lines could be introduced with a Caveat Emptor cause and small samples available for testing like they are now anyway.
If you have skin problems you would not apply something heavy to your skin. Your sensible and apply to clothes that don’t touch skin. People are not stupid. We know how to look after our skin if it’s sensitive
Absolutely agree with all you said about adding warnings instead of downright banning ingredients. Have the public decide if they want to use the product with the proper information. It's quite sad to see how much worse modern perfumes might be today when compared to these old ones just because of the prohibition of materials. "Room fresheners" HA! that is definitely something I thought before, if the regulations are causing perfumes to get gutted or discontinued what's stopping anyone to keep making them with a different label, "fabric perfume, use extreme caution when used near skin", for something that was sprayed a few dozen times on everyone's skin a few years ago. Maybe it doesn't sound as glamorous and french chic so they prefer to put these masterworks to rest instead, but imagine if half the perfumes you smell gave you these tingling sensations, how wonderful every trip to the perfume stores would be.
I wish we could bring back the 80"s what a time !!! I absolutely love Goddess I layer it with Oud and Animalix. It's sad they are over regulating frangraces. I think that's why people stock up on frangraces they love because it might change the next year. Please make a nuclear fragrance for the US we need something for just for America. Thank you Aaron for being such a wonderful person looking forward to more exciting fragrances releases. By the why Forbidden in my new very day wear I can not believe how dam beautiful it is. Every time I smell it I automatically think if of the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland Land. Thank you for keeping us updated and helping us learn more about fragrances and the laws . Stay safe and stay healthy 🙏🦄❤️. Happy Easter I hope you get something fun from the Easter Bunny 🐰🍭🍰💰.
I agree with you about having the warnings ⚠️ on the bottle/labels, but how would the customer know if they were allergic to these materials? I wouldn't like to find out I was allergic after spending £100 + on a fragrance
Coco was my signature scent in the 80's and 90's. I'm sad to say the modern formulation is a mere shell of the original masterpiece. You might want to try Jean Louis Scherrer 2 fragrance which has similar vibes to the OG Coco fragrance.
7 months later and back. So awesome to see you rub your head because of the tingling. Somehow I never ever see you do that again. I wish you were, because that’s the sign the fragrance is different and simply major awesome. PS. still loving Goddess, now called Gardenia Blanc. Especially the combination of Arabica (unfortunately discontinued) and Gardenia Blanc. If you would ever create a fragrance that is 3 parts Goddess and 1 part Arabica, I think you have created a world classic all time favourite of many many people!
Hello Aaron, love your reviews and detailed explanation. Is this the Chanel COCO EDT which is similar to the old YSL OPIUM. Is it this one you are reviewing?, thanks in advance..
So interesting dear Professor A.T.H. , yes the 80's and begining of 99's was paradise area for nuclear, quality perfumery, best example was Tsar Van Cleef and Arpels. Wish you will finally do a review on this one, the vintage and the modern, reformulated modern version
Thanks so much for this. In the 80s this was my signature scent in high school. After your video I feel so privileged to have been able to wear it so much in the nuclear version filled with ingredients now likely completely verboten in Europe!
Fantastic review Aaron! The UK now being out of the EU should hopefully mean some of these tougher regulations won’t effect any perfumery being created and produced in the UK?
I mean, I would love it if they just made it a requirement that companies add a msds type document to their products. As long as the materials aren't known to cause lasting damage (carcinogenic or something like that) and it doesn't destroy the environment to produce those compounds, then I don't really see any problem either. As long as we get the concentration of the allergens and a metric of how much of a sensitizing agent it is, then I would think it should be okay?
It’s an idea that I’ve been thinking of for over a year. I have the name and concept.it’s kind of badass to only sell it in the US. It’s that naughtiness that makes me want to do it
Yes, the American oakmoss frags are amazing. I have the famous American aftershave Pinaud Clubman with both Evernia Prunastri and Evernia Furfuracea moss extracts.
Hello Aaron, I love these vintage reviews ! Are you able to make more comparison videos of fragrances that has been reformulated and talk about the differences ?
@@patrickbateman4541 I like that vintage YSL Pour Homme fragrance, if it is the one that came out in 1971. I noticed they released this in EDT, cologne, green after shave liquid, even a black bottled concentrate that is supposed to be more citrusy. This is what I am hoping that either Aaron or someone else on RUclips would do an in-depth review with explanation of the differences. I have been able to get hold of the EDT, and I am waiting for a package which has the concentrate, but getting the cologne and green aftershave is harder. I usually get those small 2-7.5ml. original samples, which I decants over to bigger empty bottles.
Gosh, listening to you actually makes me sad about the future of perfumery. I am prone to allergic reactions, yet I would be more than happy to spend a couple of minutes researching a fragrance to make sure it wouldn’t do me any harm. It is basic self-preservation, we should be allowed to partake in that.
I remember this fragrance era and it is not fondly. All my childhood and teen years - I avoided the fragrance sections of department stores and if unavoidable would have to hold my breath and power walk through the section. The fragrances were suffocating! Anyway - cut to today and I can enjoy fragrance. I don’t feel like I am going to choke to death. I can walk freely in a department store. It’s so bizarre - I noticed the change in the 2000s. It’s more akin to cigarettes and smoking in public. You can sit alone and smoke all you want, but when you are around others who must inhale your smoke (or fragrance), you are putting that on someone who does not want it or who does end up with discomfort - watering eyes, itchy throat, coughing, etc. All that said - I adore the current Coco. I own a bottle. I probably couldn’t handle the original version lol I’d start hacking…have I said I am happy the beast mode era of the 1980s is over?
Even without dealing with cigarettes or alcohol. The fact that there are people allergic to peanuts, for example, does not mean the food industry needed any regulation to make it illegal to produce and sell peanut-based products. Existing regulation did make it necessary for any product that contains peanuts to indicate so very clearly in the packaging. But that's it, and that makes sense of course. Yet peanuts being banned from the food industry was never under consideration (to my knowledge) because it simply makes no sense. Nutrition is one of the basic goods, just as clean water (e.g. not just a luxury/fashion item as perfumes might be categorized.) Absolutely everyone needs to eat, so it's much more delicate and critical to handle allergens in food than in perfumes, I'd say. Yet, not even the food industry is doing what the perfume industry is doing. I think the reasons might not be really health-based (e.g. imposed by health-regulators,) but some power struggles behind the scenes, some economic interests steering the dynamics for self-profit opportunities. From the consumer protection perspective, it really makes no sense, since not even the food industry is doing anything like that.
@@AaronTerenceHughes It is! So beautiful and still going strong after all these years. Even the bottle is soooo beautiful, an artwork by itself. I have about 7ml left and im scared to use it, so I usually just take a whiff of the stopper every now and then to take my mind off all the everyday stress :) Vintage no 5 parfums are quite easy to find online, at least bottles from the ~80’s. I got lucky and got my bottle from a very old collection, unopened and all!
I would by your allergen monster vintage powerhouse ”room spray” in a heartbeat! I loove vintages and buy them as much as I can. Right now im wearing dior poison from the 80’s and oh my goodness, the whole house is filled with this thiiiiick goopy, sticky, fruity, complex and wide cloud of allergens and im living
So sad, indeed. But great video as always. I’ve been into fragrances for just a few months and I always think about how because of my age I missed out on a golden age of fragrances.
It is so exciting seeing you excited. I love the way you are thinking. I am makeup and hairstylist and in hair industry most all hair chemical straightener products contain formaldehyde, which is carcinogen, permanent colors and hair bleach is not healthy for your hair and your body, very hypocritical from all those regulating organizations. And every one pick for them self what treatment they will ho through. Just look at Manuel Cross from Rogue perfumery using real oakmoss and high concentrations of naturals or Russian Adam from Areej Le Dore using legally obtained musk pods and distilling it by him self. Or Bortnikoff perfumes the same. I am coming from Sloveniam we was a part of ex Yugoslavia and in that days Yugoslavian oakmoss vas very precious and famous in perfume industry. I like where are you going and how are you thinking. Make an atmosphere fragrances, aromatherapy textile creations. People who love fragrances will use them as they please and you can sell. If some one would re-make vintage Givenchy Gentleman or Chanel Antaeus ( altho even present formulation isnt bad, very rare) would be a dream come true. Be blessed ❤🍀🦄
Yes seems absolutely absurd an entire industry has to conform to 1% of a population that might possibly have a reaction to something. This needs to change.
When I kept ending up with lesser quality reformulations of famous scents I started looking into distillers originally selling oils and attars who now thanks to RUclips and fragrance forums are becoming perfumers with releases that are moving away from the very Middle Eastern to leaning western - Russian Adam (Areej Le Dore), Ensar Oud, Agar Aura, Dixit & Zak to name a few and they're able to avoid the IFRA regulations. Even so, Areej Le Dore's leathery floriental Cuir de Russie is labeled as "To be used on cloth only" making it maybe the first "Garment Perfume"? because of the vintage crude birch tar as a top note. I think fragrance buyers have to consider whether to search out quality vintage or seek these artisan perfumers. Its a tough decision but sourcing and working with certain ingredients may drive perfumers to move to places that serve them and their customers better.
Man, I 200% agree! Just slap a warning on the juice and let people decide for themselves. I mean, we didn’t ban peanuts, even though they can literally take people out like a ninja, but oak moss?? Heaven forbid we upset 0.2% of the fragrance community! 😂 These rules are getting ridiculous. Honestly, that’s why Im in the vintage fragrance collection rabbit hole .That’s how I ended up here! I just bought a random bundle and, surprise, it had an 80s Coco Chanel in there… and guess what …? I kinda like it 😂 6”2 guy with a beard 😂 I don’t care I’ll rock it 😂
Please please do a video on bad boy le parfum. I love it and it’s a lot better than the original bad boy in my opinion and very bold and offensive in a good way. It’s amazing
Yea idk why you have to regulate because of skin allergic skin, just require a label warning like nuts warning on food products. I wonder if there’s some companies lobbying behind this.
my mum had (not sure if she still does) coco and no. 5 chanel. personally for me too powdery. but i get where youre coming from with the over regulation issue I'll tell you whats AMAZING shalimar by guerline - get some if you can
Hmm, yes a nice room spray or 'fabric-freshener' that's got clout and staying power sounds wonderful - do let us know when we can place orders 😁 It's pretty daft we can't decide for ourselves as you say - cigarettes, booze, junk food galore that have WAY more impact on many more people get sidelined... definitely out of whack! Have a good day Monsieur - having a spritz of Santal Extreme - cheers!
What up bro I enjoyed hearing your take on this frag and I love this juice and my mother does have 1 of the older bottles of this frag and sometimes I just go by and smell it lol but great seeing you thanks bro
One of the great things about living in the US is we don't adhere to IFRA...woohoo!!! All those wonderful perfumers can travel across the 'pond' to make their masterpieces. The UK isn't part of the EU anymore. Tell your Parliament to say 'Screw IFRA!' You should try the fragrances from Rogue Perfumery here in the US. His stuff is bomb and he is super proud that he is non-IFRA compliant 😁 If you are interested in trying some of his stuff, let me know and I can send samples of the fragrances of his that I do own.
I'm afraid of buying more perfumes because I'm not sure these won't go bad, and you're smelling a 4o years old sample. How is it from your perspective, do perfumes go bad? Should I be afraid, or buy as much as I want and keep it for years and years?
A lot of the regulations have to do with makeup do they not? I think fragrance should have it's own seperate regulatory system or warning labels like you said
If you have billions of dollars you can release dangerous drugs on the market, and as you say, addictive substances. But when it's smaller companies that are affected, governments like to show they are "protecting consumers" Sorry to hear how it's becoming more and more difficult to perform your art. :(
Regulatory bodies will never make themselves go away. They'll justify their existence by coming up with even more "problems" to solve. Do you find yourself having to dial down formulations to comply or have you learnt to just stay away from certain compounds?
I just don’t work with some raw materials .Rose can not have any isoeugenol in. But I want to use Oakmoss above 0.2% and I can’t. That low doesn’t really have the effect I want. The IFRA versions are missing the quality of the non IFRA versions. The IFRA versions are also very expensive
You could still use materials like oakmoss. Yes it is banned or restricted like many other materials but can you not have isolates removed that cause the reactions? I’m sure I’ve heard Roja Dove speak of having naturally occurring isolates removed within oakmoss so that it becomes IFRA compliant, however this makes sourcing it much more difficult and far more expensive to both the perfumer and the consumer. I’d like to see an 80’s style fragrance released in the U.K. too! I’m sure being as talented as you are that you would be able to create accords that would mimic great materials of the past! While still being compliant, failing that there are brands that are non ifra compliant like Rogue, these are sold via Etsy from the United States and they do ship to the U.K. Maybe you would be able to sell them from the shop when it can open 😊 🤞🦄
One thing I like about this channel is that you give reviews on fragrances instead of doing the top ten topics I see others do on their youtube channels Such as top ten fragrances for winter, top ten fragrances for any season, top ten fragrances that will give you compliments, top ten fragrances that will make you smell like a million bucks it is like a top ten fragrance every week
Why don't companies just list the allergens ,and then everyone just decide for himself. I am not sure how quite rare reactions should lead to such drastic measures? Or is it an excuse to cheapen the quality of fragrances and being lobbied for by the companies themselves? We all witness the lowering of quality by the big names in fragrances ( designer ones the most) So disappointing......the magic will go away
@@margienoire7464 I am very sad as well, because I love the strong ones,my favourites are Opium,Lou Lou,Youth Dew,Eden,Poison....the list is quite long....I'll just have to enjoy of what is left of them in new versions nowadays....I guess even today's versions might be too strong in the future 😭
Things are not getting better. Control is tightening. Hope the producers get together and stop the bull. Content labels are the answer. I never like being told what I can do.
The problem with trying to make something appeal to everyone is it becomes appealing to no one... and that’s what IFRA tries to do is make a fragrance that offends no one.
Now we are free from EU regulation, can't you release a UK version once we come up with our own standards? Worse case every bottle would need to be sold with a waver and 10 pages of legal documentation :)
We are still aligned with the EU. I’d love to see the UK breaking free of IFRA and the EU regs. Some of the cosmetic regs are great like ban on animal testing for raw materials and finished cosmetics. But I’d like to see consumers making there own mind up with the correct warning. Rather then decide for them

Hi Shawn. I’m developing it now. Will be 2022 it’s ready. I agree with you 100%
I agree with you about having the warnings ⚠️ on the bottle/labels, but how would the customer know if they were allergic to these materials? I wouldn't like to find out I was allergic after spending £100 + on a fragrance
Fabulous review,, aroma from heaven
Coco was my signature scent in the 80's and 90's. I'm sad to say the modern formulation is a mere shell of the original masterpiece. You might want to try Jean Louis Scherrer 2 fragrance which has similar vibes to the OG Coco fragrance.
Just got a bottle of Onyx and it's incredible
Thank you for supporting me and my team🦄
And thank you for being who you are. You're truly a breath of fresh air.
Would love to smell Onyx & the other fragrances
If I could buy the Discovery kit today, I would
But don't think they ship to my Country
@@AaronTerenceHughes Hi Aaron I want to try Onyx it's for summer and can you review Pasha de Cartier parfum I love it
7 months later and back.
Oh I remember this perfume from the 80’s, stunning aroma that made whom ever was wearing instantly noticed.
Tsar was an amazing fougère. So complex and both fresh but also rich.
Couldn’t agree more regarding IFRA and other regs. Let people make the decision about what they use or don’t use.
Welcome brother. You finally came around! Please sell non IFRA compliant fragrance in US.
He did for kouros 😍
@@patrickbateman4541 thanks for letting me know ! I will definitely check that out ! BTW, don't forget to return those videotapes...
@@GungFuIsGungFu Funnily enough I'm wearing Kouros. Although Patrick actually wore YSL Pour Homme as his signature
I agree. We are not all stupid. A lot of people are educated at why they are sensitive to
Stumbled across this channel and loving it. Now a subscriber!
Welcome and thank you
I remember this fragrance era and it is not fondly.
"Room fresheners" for the win! 😉
Or just US exclusive
I have coco EDP and Parfum, both from the 80's and love them :) Also no 5 Parfum from 60's and EDP from 70's
Is the 60’s version amazing? I bet it is. It’s crazy that they had to reformulate things.
@@AaronTerenceHughes
It is! So beautiful and still going strong after all these years. Even the bottle is soooo beautiful, an artwork by itself.
I have about 7ml left and im scared to use it, so I usually just take a whiff of the stopper every now and then to take my mind off all the everyday stress :)
Vintage no 5 parfums are quite easy to find online, at least bottles from the ~80’s.
I would love to see a video of your top fragrances!! I feel that’s be very interesting
Coming soon!
Godess is heavenly indeed! Definitely unisex.
Garment Perfume is a really great way to get around the IFRA regs. I never thought of that.
I have a bottle of this fragrance from the 1980s. Feel lucky to be able to enjoy it ❤
Man, I 200% agree!
Will do!
I love the insights onto the industry
I smell rose petals as it dries down. Cloves for spice. Romantic and mysterious. I miss musk as it was though.
Yea idk why you have to regulate because of skin allergic skin, just require a label warning like nuts warning on food products. I wonder if there’s some companies lobbying behind this.
The nuts analogy about allergic components is on point!
I smell rose petals too, and cloves for spice. Romantic, sexy, mysterious. But I miss the old musk.
Thanx i have the old formule and i am online use it a fel times it maken me so sad i can not get it anymore
The only industry that does NOT want naturals to be used is the perfume industry apparently..sigh.
my mum had (not sure if she still does) coco and no. 5 chanel. personally for me too powdery. but i get where youre coming from with the over regulation issue
I'll tell you whats AMAZING shalimar by guerline - get some if you can
Please release a powerhouse fragrance!!!!
I recon il do it. It’s a cool name and concept. I think 2022 il release it
What up bro I enjoyed hearing your take on this frag and I love this juice and my mother does have 1 of the older bottles of this frag and sometimes I just go by and smell it lol but great seeing you thanks bro
I think it’s beautiful and can understand why she would hang onto it and keep for special occasions
@@AaronTerenceHughes oh yes bro she has had it for a very long time but thanks bro much love peace
We are adults yes , but how can you deal with jerks over spraying those allergic perfumes and killing everyone around them ?
Aaron my man🦄🦄🦄
🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
They get weaker due to oxidation
A lot of the regulations have to do with makeup do they not? I think fragrance should have it's own seperate regulatory system or warning labels like you said
I have a feeling that this is gonna sound just like how my mother used to smell like
If you have billions of dollars you can release dangerous drugs on the market, and as you say, addictive substances. But when it's smaller companies that are affected, governments like to show they are "protecting consumers" Sorry to hear how it's becoming more and more difficult to perform your art. :(
Before I see you're videos I give a thumbs 👍up cause I know it is interesting.
You're the best!
What are you renaming Goddess to?
I would definitely buy your 1980’s perfume in the U.S.
It famously uses the "mellis accord".
It’s really tough to get ifra oakmoss. I’ve tried four big suppliers. If it happens then the price will be very expensive
pls review Vanderbilt Gloria Vanderbilt perfume,it's launched in 1982 ;p
I remember liking this, very powdery not my kind of style today. It was definitely recognisable.
Aaron, whats Balsamic note means?
Truly enjoyed this video..
Thank you. I loved filming something interesting
Hey Aaron! I would love to see a review on pulse of the night by issey miyake
One thing I like about this channel is that you give reviews on fragrances instead of doing the top ten topics I see others do on their youtube channels
Such as top ten fragrances for winter, top ten fragrances for any season, top ten fragrances that will give you compliments, top ten fragrances that will make you smell like a million bucks it is like a top ten fragrance every week
I agree 100%
If you like aldehydes Pikovaya Dama by Xerjoff is insane! I’d love to get your reaction.
Do it Aaron! Lol as long as it's not a Drakkar Noire throwback jk
What is the address for us to send samples for you to review?
You could do a garment perfume
Things are not getting better. Control is tightening. Hope the producers get together and stop the bull. Content labels are the answer. I never like being told what I can do.
I wonder if small batch perfumers that use naturals will pop up.
I will always find a way to use naturals
You should do Tom Ford neroli portifino Aqua
could you do a review of l'homme ideal guerlain edp
IFRA already has citrus fragrances in their crosshairs rn
I hope not. After that I recon most floral absolutes.
Aromatherapy category not for direct use on skin without dilution.
Oakmoss is restricted right through most of the IFRA categories. The only one not restricted is non skin contact like air freshener.
I wonder if there were no regulations like today where would the perfumery go.
Would produce more nuclear fragrance. And less ozonic, light fragrance
The problem with trying to make something appeal to everyone is it becomes appealing to no one... and that’s what IFRA tries to do is make a fragrance that offends no one.
Today’s world is about being the most offended. I hope this passes
Try Trussardi Amber Oud
Now we are free from EU regulation, can't you release a UK version once we come up with our own standards? Worse case every bottle would need to be sold with a waver and 10 pages of legal documentation :)
We are still aligned with the EU. I’d love to see the UK breaking free of IFRA and the EU regs. Some of the cosmetic regs are great like ban on animal testing for raw materials and finished cosmetics. But I’d like to see consumers making there own mind up with the correct warning. Rather then decide for them
