- HMMWV Oil Change : How To / What You Need To Know
Hello Everyone, In this video we will be changing the oil in our Military Humvee equipped with the 6.5L Diesel engine. I highly recommend using Shell Rotella T6 15W-30 full synthetic oil in the newer Humvees. This is the oil I have used in all of my diesel engines.
Oil: Shell Rotella T6 15W-30
Filter: K&N HP3002
Oil Capacity: 8QT or 7.6L... Pretty much 2 gallons
Oil Drain plug wrench size: 9/16
Oil Drain Plug torque: 20-27 ft/lbs

I am so grateful for all your HMMWV videos. They have been a real help for this beginner. Thank you for keeping it real and giving sound advice not the cheapest.
Dude, your entire channel is an absolute life saver. As I am looking to get a surplus humvee to fix up. Thanks
I am glad that you made this video. I wanted to see how similar the procedure was to the one for my '77 Chevy Chevette.
great video...like the detail like pointing to driver side while under thank you for your extra efforts PS direct hit to the catch pan hole...nice shot
Danke, ich schau deine Videos gerne, komm aus Deutschland und habe seit kurzem auch ein Humvee, good work sir
I loved this! I will be buying an M1123 (hopefully) in the next couple of years, if not at somw point (relatively) soon. Thank you for your amazing, intuitive content. I had came across this video as the top result for "M1123 Humvee oil change" and I am pleased. Thank you once again for your effort and good attitude, I love an informative video that is not all "high and mighty" towards people genuinely interested. You have more than earnwd my subscription! ❤
just got a surplus 1990 humvee , great video as I was stressing about maintenance thank you
I'm currently performing a full suspension refresh new tie rod ends idlar Arn/ Pittman arm, ball joints and all A-arm bushings. Mine came out of the Yermo yard. Took delivery in early July. Did full service also. Thanks for all the great videos.
As usual great job Sir! Thanks for keeping it simple! B
Thanks Dakota, very helpful. See ya on the next video.
Great Video!
Very detailed... Thank you for sharing
Once again, thank you for your videos, very informative. It does helps me a lot.
It's funny you mention filling up the oil filter, when we do annual maintenance on a hmmwv we just lube the seals, slap it on and throw in an extra quart of oil to account for the empty filter.
Thank you very much for all these videos !! They are very helpful !!
Very helpful in services I need to attempt to do next week
Hey guys, I just changed my oil myself for the first time. I pulled the injector cords as seen on the video at 12:51. Now my motor will crank, but it won't start. Usually, I have it done but decided to do myself. Trying to keep my batteries alive through it all. Oil is changed, 6.5, 2005 Humvee. Doesn't appear that the cords could be backwards as to I was careful not to and one is shorter than the other. Any advice?
Great little helpful video. Thanks. Do you have any vids on PS pump change on the 6.5 non turbo? Cheers
Thanks 😎👍 very good Video
how many miles can you run between changes..?
hey Dakota I was wondering if your going to do more off-roading vids I really liked them.
Yup! Once I get my personal truck up and running, I’m hoping to gear my channel more towards off-roading, Humvee overland camping, and more adventures.
hi friend I have a hummer h1 2004 k series. the company recommends 15w40. However, I believe that 15w40 oil is cheaper and less refined than 5w30 or 10w40. Isn't synthetic 5w30 oil better than and more protective than 15w40? I would like to have clarification on this matter. Thank you
I use shell in my 4.0 straight 6 too
Good video. Running the engine before the oil change does NOT make the oil run faster. Just the opposite. 15 in the 15-w40 is the colt viscosity.
When you warm up the engine, you first start with thin oil, but as the engine warms up, it actually gets thicker.
There might be a reason to run the engine for several seconds before an oil change, but it has nothing to do with making the oil flow better.
Do you know where I can get a tech manual for HMMWV’s?

What's that canister in 10:43 visible on right with Vento tube on top?
@@Tomek1985 it’s the power steering reservoir.
Out of curiosity, how much of a pain was it to loosen that filter. Also what was the brand of the filter you removed
Old video and an old comment, but I thought I'd respond as I just changed my oil. Not sure why they are on there that tight, but I shredded mine getting it off.
@@michaelroberts8140 have you checked out my oil filter wrench?
@@JM3OFW I have not. but typically when installing or removing an oil filter a standard oil filter wrench is plenty.
I would like to send you one of my tools to demo.
Couldn't find t3 any where.. but T4 yeah.. it is conventional
Any idea if anyone makes a remote oil filter conversion for these engines? Mileage between changes? This would have been a good time to grease the U joints while the oil was draining. Great video!
Who has a Humvee and doesn’t have a funnel?
You’d be surprised 😂
Cause nobody bothered to sign it out from the mechanic lol
Do want to sale the Hummer ? Let me know ASAP . THANKS
Ciao.cerco Hummer h1 Diesel da trasferire in Italia.
Possibile sapere costi . aspetto risposta
Saluti
Just discovered your channel !
Its way cool! I've been retoring cars for years, but I'm a hmmwv newbie!!!
FYI, who ever told you that crap about not filling the filter....is full of shit.
your far more likely to cause dmg from momentary oil starvation, than from " contamination ".......your crank case is chuck full of "contamination'!!!
I would not disconnect the fuel...your injector pump requires it for lubrication !
that's a good way to dmg your injector pump! Great vid, and you have excellent work habits! I will be watching more!

If you run Rotella run it through a coffee filter first it is crap
Rotella is crap oil
it is?.....what do you base that "fact" on?
@@rolling1885modern diesel oils are designed to make the ridiculous emissions systems last a long time. They accomplish this by lowering the amount of ZZDP in the oil formulation. ZDDP (basically zinc) is what lubricates the engine.
Have a look at this video from Power Driven Diesel. They have their own formulation of diesel oil for "competition" diesel engines. They did this because modern diesel engine oils are crappy. It's got a lot of good info.
