Damn it is a pity that your video did not yet exist last week! I am just ending a bout of sickness from SARS-CoV2 (most likely BA.5) that I caught due in part to being a bit unguarded stemming from reviewing my county's [incomplete] data. If I had seen Biobot's data for my county I almost certainly would not have been out in public unnecessarily exposing myself to elevated levels of the virus like I did. I avoided going out in public during this last major spike and did not get sick. My county's current data made it look like the numbers were low but Biobot's sewage numbers tell a complete different story. It is surprising that now with home testing my county has not started transitioning their data points to sewage numbers. Maybe they do not want to alarm the public with the hospitalization and death numbers being so low despite these ridiculously high infection rates? Thank you very kindly for your incredibly eye-opening video!
Oh wow, so sorry to hear you've been sick! Yes, I would like for it to be easier for people to get information on case levels (as best we can estimate them) so that they can make an informed decision about taking risks and protective behaviors like masking up a bit more. I do think it's possible to be out in public even when cases are high, one can wear a good mask and then be selective about certain indoor activities. Hope you finish your recovery soon!
Dear Dr K,
Thanks so much for this accessible, fact based, and public health focused discussion of COVID-19 especially for older adults. I love your show and you helped me take care of my mom....and now myself!!!
Oh, thank you for this feedback. You're so welcome!
Thanks so much for posting these. Very thorough and level-headed. Much appreciated!
Thank you! I'm so glad if it's helpful.
Helpful to have the chapters. Thanks.
Hello Leslie,
My Health Committee in our senior community is interested in doing a program on ankle swelling. I know you just wrote about it and now I can't find it as a reference. Might you send me the URL for it if you can please? Thanks. Sue Hawes
hi Sue: you can find the BHWA article on leg edema here: betterhealthwhileaging.net/leg-swelling-in-aging/. Thank you for serving on your community's health committee!
What if an older person, 75 who has previous stroke but no damage and is hypoglycemic, is NOT vaccinated and we don’t know if she has had natural exposure (unlikely)? What are risks at this point with BA-5? (She has been directly exposed and is not feeling well today but is so far testing negative)
Well in general, the data shows that even in people who have previously had COVID, vaccination improves antibody levels and protection from subsequent COVID episodes. So I would encourage her to consider vaccination once she's feeling well, because she's at high risk due to age and medical conditions. And since she's high risk, it's worth avoiding exposure to BA.5, esp right now as she's unvaccinated.
If she's feeling unwell now: it can take several days post exposure to start testing positive on rapid test. If she's had symptoms for 5 days and is still negative on rapid test (make sure you're taking a good sample), then it seems likely that it's not COVID and it's something else. (You could also get a PCR at this point to be sure.) If she has COVID, I would strongly recommend Paxlovid, because she's high risk for complications. Good luck!
