I've only been to Japan once and prices were great. It was basically comparable to Salt Lake City sometimes cheaper and rarely more expensive. Beer was one item that was much more expensive though I guess owing to alcohol taxes. Great deals on food in Japan. High quality burgers for good prices and way better prices on Japanese food than in the states of course. Drinks were cheap and plentiful. Great place can't wait to visit again for an extended period.
For real, salt lake at this point is such a scam, I’m paying almost $2000 for a 1 bedroom and the homes are so extraordinary expensive there’s no way to get a reasonably priced house here.

@@snarkylive In Japan the teacher wages are similar no matter where you live. Teachers in rural areas of Japan have cheaper living expenses. However travel inside Japan is expensive. My friend went rural to "save" more but blew the savings by making frequent trips to cities. 🤣
When I lived in Kyoto as a foreign student, my rent was ¥30,000 (about $250) a month for a studio flat. And there were very cheap restaurants like Yoshinoya and Matsuya as well. Japan can be cheap if you know where to look.
This is one of my favorite videos you both have done. It's informative but also so nonchalantly comedic. I think it really depends on the individual and also where you live. Here in Germany there are also places that are really expensive, simply because everyone wants to live there. While more rural places, for example here where I live, you can live really well and cheaply. Even places that are still in the city, but are a "little" more rural, are often a lot cheaper here. Thank you for helping prove my point about prices in Japan. My friends keep telling me how expensive everything in Japan is. I disagree with them. They persist. I ask them if they ever were in Japan. No. Do they know anyone living in Japan. No. I can answer Yes to each of those. I still have my receipts from Lawsons, Family Mart and Yamazaki to show them. They remain skeptical of someone who actually experienced life in Japan. Today I showed them this video. It seems your video outweighs my photos and videos because now they believe. I think Japan got that reputation in the 80s, when in comparison to the rest of the world things really were expensive. Most people I've talked to that complain about how expensive it is were stationed there when they were in the military in the 80s. They were surprised to find out that in the 90s Japan's economy didn't do well, and now the rest of the world has surpassed the cost off living in Japan.

My friend always told me this. If you live like a foreigner you be paying lots of money but if you live like a Japanese you will be fine. Plus depending on job you'll be saving.
I recall this much from my last vacation in Japan: eating out at a restaurant I was paying less for 3 people than I would for 2 people back home in the USA. When I budgeted for that trip, I set aside $50 US/day and had more than enough for food and trains (that weren't paid for by my company). We ate out every meal at that time, which is not what you would do if you were living in Japan.
@@MrsEats It's still cheaper than back home. So many people were telling me how expensive Japan was, but after we got there it was less expensive than back home.

From what I have seen there are a lot of alternatives to eating in a high in restaurants. They suggest pickup meals through street venders or even 7-11. My dad went there in 2006 and he came back and told me it was crazy expensive and he spent $50 on a pizza. So when I found out I had an unexpected layover for 24 hours in 2013 in Japan I was scared. But my experience was totally different $35 for a hotel room with a huge beautiful free breakfast in the morning. Ministop (7-11 like store) was cheaper or the same price for everything as it is in America. It definitely felt cheaper over all than America, and I live in a very affordable place in America. But like any country if you are going to places of interest, tourist spots, of course its going to be over priced.
It's not far off the same as the UK. I just worked it out that our pizzas cost around $27......however our pizzas are half the size of yours, so that would be a small American pizza 😅 You couldn't get a nice hotel room here for $35, you could only get a budget room from a budget hotel or maybe a half decent Air B&B if you're lucky

In a sea of Tokyo-based RUclipsrs, I've always appreciated that you are both in Osaka!. Seeing the Hankyu line was so nostalgic, as it's the line my fiancé lives near. Also, I'm pretty sure I know exactly which Family Mart that is (Near Grand Front) 😂. Great video as always!
Laughed out loud at Kancho University and "everyday necessities" 😂 Relatable. In general, prices seem to be pretty well balanced, you can have all the basic things for average or lower costs while hobbies and specialty stuff could get really expensive.
The rent is kind of high considering the size and quality of the apartments (insulation, thin walls, no central heat/cooling). I own a much bigger house on 1/2 acre lot. I pay $650/month. Electricity is also a bit high. I've only had to pay $130 a few times. It's usually around $70 Food prices are pretty much the same. Maybe a little lower there, but we tend to eat more. I don't think most of us would be okay with just a slice of toast for breakfast, for example...
Here(JPN) just outside of small city , small apartments close to the station go from 400-1000 USD per month . You can definitely get cheaper apartment but it'll be far from train station then you'll need a car as there's no other public transport and owning a car here is very expensive . So yeah , interesting video but unless you do nothing in your life but work and sleep , it's very unrealistic .
That grocery store discount after 6pm was actually new to me. I wished that was a thing here in the U.S. I'm originally from Hawaii and it's definitely expensive to live out there especially in Honolulu.
NY even upstate where I am is expensive. The cheapest rent right now is ours for a whole house 700. But in the next town over 1200 dollars both villages
@@MrsEats I guess it depends on where you go. I can get a pen from Daiso or a pen from Loft. One would be a lot less expensive than the other. Same with food there are great places to eat that are not very expensive and there are places that can break the bank.

Wow, the total monthly expenses in Japan are less than the rent alone here in America! Where I live, the rent alone, even for a studio apartment, is more than the total monthly expenses that you listed! In fact, that rent rate that you listed was actually quite reasonable. It's actually about what I paid for a three-bedroom townhome when I was in college (the complex was built specifically for college students, so the rent was more affordable than traditional apartments. And if the minimum wage in Japan is 925 yen per hour, and assuming you work 8 hours a day, you'll make more than the daily expenses by almost 3000 yen. Definitely going to move to Japan now if it really is that cheap! And if I look at buying a traditional house instead of renting an apartment, I could be looking at a price tag as low as 2 million to 4 million yen, thus saving even more money!
Mrs. Eats your awesome to watch! Love your enthusiasm, an really there isnt a channel out there like yours. You definitely hit gold! Really kewl to see the differences between the our countries. One day i hope to visit you country

Mr/Mrs Eats, great production quality on the vlog! I’m connecting with more people in Japan and see the high and low prices, as well as where people live and how they work.I hear there are lots of pesticides used in vegetables, go I’m watching and talking to an organic farmer in Japan. Hope to visit soon and thanks for the laughs!
This video is great; it really explains pretty straightforward what I often explain to others regarding living in Japan. It *can* be expensive - but anywhere *can* be. My apartment was cheaper than the US and still big enough, Internet is cheaper... I don't remember paying my water bill directly myself, but that's much better than the $100+/mo I pay here - although I do live in a house and I don't know how much that runs for houses in Japan. And eating out - you can go pricey (and it can be very worth it), but the cheap stuff is often cheaper than, and healthier than, what I see here in the States.
food is relativly expsensive in Japan, for reasons like the lack of usable land and the trend for perfection. But the really expensive stuff is for presents, not normal use.
Such a fun video! Any place can be expensive if you buy expensive and don't price compare/budget. Also I love that Jotaro figure! I know if I visited Japan it'd be expensive because I'd have an entire suitcase full of Jojo merch lol.
These videos are so informative oh my goodness!! In the far future I definitely plan on visiting Japan so having some knowledge on hand is definitely helpful! I even like how people who live in Japan who watch the videos agree with some things!
Mrs. Eats makes such funny videos that are also informative at the same time! I could never make a video like her because I would be too nervous about the people walking by thinking "What the heck is that person doing?". Like what everyone has said here in the comments of this video, it really depends where you live in Japan, I want to be an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, but I am always worrying about where I could live! But when I get to Japan, I want to be just like Mrs. Eats! You are the best Mrs. Eats!!
Hey. Thanks for all you do. This is my second time living in Japan. The first time. I got hit by the depression stage really hard and didn’t understand what happened. I had a good enough Job. I’m a teacher by trade/ training. So teaching wasn’t the problem. I was happy. I enjoy travelling and experiencing new things. So. When I got to that really dark place, I didn’t know what hit me. I had to go home for over a year. It was during that gap year that I found your videos. That particular video about the emotional trajectory was super helpful. Coming back, I had more of an understanding of what I was getting into and also a lot more flexibility and choosing power regarding work. It’s only been a few months back and it’s great so far. Let’s see how the rest of the first year goes.
Watching Paolo on the computer made me smile. Another great channel. Overall I feel like daily life stuff would be comparable to a lot of places in the US. Thanks for the info.
I'm so happy to come across your channel! Your information is so informative and very fun! I laughed out loud when you went for the Jotaro statue (yare, yare, daze indeed)!! Your videos are so fun! Thank you very much for it!!
Mrs. Eats, you are too funny! I love your videos. Mr.Eats has his moments too. I have to have a Kancho shirt. I will be ordering soon. Can't wait to wear it and show people what it means to have a degree from there... By the way, the cost of living there is not that bad. Depending on how you handle it and what you get!
Made me consider how much I pay each month living in the US (Just outside Washington DC). Rather conservatively, if I were to never have anything but the necessities, it’s still about $50 a day.
I agree, Japan can seem very expansive, but it depends where you compare it to. In general compared to other developed countries it's pretty cheap. The only unreasonably expansive things are taxi rides (everywhere) and real estate prices in Tokyo.
I love this. A lot of people seem to have a specific type of thing in mind when it comes to living in Japan. Many don't know how many choices there are in Japan, in terms of cost of living. It can be unbelievably expensive for sure, but it can also be relatively cheap. When it comes to food especially, I've noticed that foreigners tend to go for food that they're more familiar with. Which tends to be more expensive, because they're foreign foods.
Hello Mrs Eats... Regards from Brazil... Love your channel... I grew up watching Japanese anime and reading manga so that made me create a great interest in japanese culture and your channel is a great way to understand japanese way of life and know more about you guys... Hope some day I can take my family to visit Japan ( specially my 4 yrs old son that dreams to visit the Super Nintendo World and is always asking when we can go lol) and surely your tips will come in handy... Again congrats on the fun content you provide...
America is still far cheaper about $0.03 per toast. 3 cents per serving of rice. 4 cents per 8 oz coffee. $0.10 per hot dog. $2.66 a pound of beef. If you make it at home and buy from walmart or wholesale clubs.
I'm really surprised! I live with my wife for a few months now in Warsaw (Poland) and we usually spend around 1300$ per month, but with much, much smaller average salary than in Japan!
Mrs Eats is officially the cutest woman on youtube, if not the whole internet. Love your content, love your sense of humor, need more Hancho! (I probably said that wrong)
This is so true! I lived in Japan for almost half a decade, and it's really not as expensive as others make it out to be. I have to agree that fresh fruits in Japan do tend to have insane prices, though - especially depending on which area of Japan you live in.
You forgot my weekend カラオケ bar tabs. Maybe have to double that. Oh, my trips to マクドナルド. . . and noodle shops. Maybe tipple. I have a house in 神戸三宮. When Japan finally opens back up, I have to accidentally on purpose meet you guys. Love the videos.
I really hope Japan opens up to tourists again soon. Husband and I have wanted to do our honeymoon in Japan. The prices for most things are comparable or cheaper than Australia. When it comes to living in Japan though, my Australian friends that have moved there have found it extremely difficult the past couple of years since the pandemic started :( no company in the past year will hire them or give them sponsorship.
Lol I remember some scrub went to Japan during 2019 and they came back one week after Covid officially hit USA. Person changed for the worst they were cross dressing afterwards. So they probably fooled around with some jp guys overseas. They were 19 at the time
I liked this video a lot. Fun and informative. I was vibing. Its cool to see more of Japan too, even the mundane train station entrances, family mart (thank you Chris broad for my knowledge on that lol) or just the places you go daily. Its nice to see different things.
This was a very good video. It made me laugh when you threw the papers in the air after work and then laid down with the JoJo figurine haha great sense of humor
Nice video for budget living in Osaka. If you eat lunch at restaurants daily, and have a decent sized place for a western person, your cost will be double whats listed at the end of the video. Triple for Tokyo. The good part is you can scale up or down, based on your budget. Other countries do not have that flexibility.
I think, no matter how expensive the town or country might be, there are ways to get around it. For instance, as long as you have electricity and a freezer, milk, potatoes and other perishables can persist for years. Rice, beans, potatoes, canned goods and some meat are enough to get by on. Also, it is good to know how to fish.
that was a very informative video, thanks! I would have some questions though: 1. Is it normal to not have a drink to your lunch? 2. you showed the fish filet which was plenty and rather cheap. How about prices for different meat with such portions? I am asking as I am allergic to fish, so I wonder what would I pay for meat instead?

This is quickly becoming my favorite japan-themed channel. Awesome stuff! ^^
Thank you!
great video, now i have an idea on how much to save up, the video was easy to understand, thank you...
I just enjoyed watching you dance around the city the entire video. Completely worth every single second of film.
I liked the entire video, but the outtakes at the end made me chuckle, thank you for including them!
This lady scared me!!
How adorable is Mrs Eats?! I just love her!
The rent is kind of high considering the size and quality of the apartments (insulation, thin walls, no central heat/cooling). I own a much bigger house on 1/2 acre lot. I pay $650/month.
Electricity is also a bit high. I've only had to pay $130 a few times. It's usually around $70
Food prices are pretty much the same. Maybe a little lower there, but we tend to eat more. I don't think most of us would be okay with just a slice of toast for breakfast, for example...
Omg in california a room is almost 2000 a month, 😭😭
Room in London £850/ month+ £127 council tax. (Tax for living there!)
@@philippal8666 probably a bigger, and better apartment than you would get in Japan, tho
But in the next town over 1200 dollars both villages
love how stoked on life you seem in this video. life in osaka is definitely much cheaper than in vancouver
Life is very cool!
@@MrsEats i wish to get isekaied to another world where i am given special powers upon arrival.
01:14 a little disappointed you didn't play a song from the band Japanese Breakfast LOL.
Cheaper than over here that’s for sure. Well done!! Loved the video. Mr Eats cameo was hilarious. 😂
Hi Ivan!! Long time no see!! I hope you are very genki!!! Mr. Eats is always victim of my KANCHO!!
Hillarious, as always. I imagine the date stamps might of changed the importance of the in info, but you Eat's kids should keep up the teamwork.
I LOVE the plug for your merch. Made me laugh out loud.
Hi Paul!! Yes every member of Kancho University need their uniform!! Thank you for watching!! Do you think price in Japan is expensive?
@@MrsEats I guess it depends on where you go. I can get a pen from Daiso or a pen from Loft. One would be a lot less expensive than the other. Same with food there are great places to eat that are not very expensive and there are places that can break the bank.
Mrs. Eats is always so happy and smiley. It makes me feel better just watching your videos. Thanks! 😊
I like the way you presented this video. Kinda like a day in the life montage with prices.
This was a super cute way to give westerner's an idea of what daily expenses are like. Great vid! I love the essential purchase from AnIMate
4:17 Wow. You just HAD to rip my heart apart again, didn’t you? 😂 I was finally getting over it and you just had to remind me. Set your heart ablaze! 😭
this lady is so kind, funny and nice. like her videos
Your enthusiasm is much appreciated 😇
Great video! I love how you edited this and showed us how much things cost rather then just sitting in front of the camera and just saying how much things cost.
please make more videos like this. mrs eats being cute and weird and funny on any random day, with costs posted or not, and background cheerful house music. so much joy!
This was the boost of fun and information I needed today. Thank you!
Thank you!!
Arigato Gozaimasu Mrs Eats! Very appreciated!
Great video 👏. After seeing a few more of your videos, your personality has made me a subscriber now MrsEats.💖. Much love from Chicago in the U.S.😊
I think it costs a lot of money to buy some of Japan's veggies, fruits ect. I hope i can still go with that kind of amount lol
food is relativly expsensive in Japan, for reasons like the lack of usable land and the trend for perfection. But the really expensive stuff is for presents, not normal use.
Yes a little expensive but you can find cheap one!
It’s quite expensive and it’s probably not the fruit that you are used to.
Most of it just tastes like sugary water, there’re no many nutrients in it.
@@megumilifeinjapan483 Why? Why no nutritional value? Aren't Japan's agricultural aspect very good? Sorry just curious.
Pretty, funny, entertaining and informative. Mrs. Eats is the total package. Keep up the great vids.
Such a fun video! Any place can be expensive if you buy expensive and don't price compare/budget. Also I love that Jotaro figure! I know if I visited Japan it'd be expensive because I'd have an entire suitcase full of Jojo merch lol.
Thanks for this video! Informative! Was just recently looking this up with my husband. We were curious lol.
These videos are so informative oh my goodness!! In the far future I definitely plan on visiting Japan so having some knowledge on hand is definitely helpful! I even like how people who live in Japan who watch the videos agree with some things!
I am definitely used to the prices we have in the Land of Free Refills
Love how playful and funny you are
Love the little Paolo from Tokyo cameo on your computer.
Watching Paolo on the computer made me smile. Another great channel.
Overall I feel like daily life stuff would be comparable to a lot of places in the US. Thanks for the info.
Yes not too expensive!
mrs eats is so cool! i love her energy!
Thank you Michael! You will be new enrolling student of KANCHO UNIVERSITY!
I was deployed to Okinawa in 2007. The food was amazing and sushi way cheaper then America. I also loved all the drink machines everywhere also.
Made me consider how much I pay each month living in the US (Just outside Washington DC). Rather conservatively, if I were to never have anything but the necessities, it’s still about $50 a day.
I used to live in DC. It's a huge rip-off. Crazy expensive.
Wow very expensive! Move to Japan!
Yes its expensive here in DC. Looking for good ramen, the Jinyu Ramen bar off 14th st in Northwest is good 😁
I agree, Japan can seem very expansive, but it depends where you compare it to. In general compared to other developed countries it's pretty cheap. The only unreasonably expansive things are taxi rides (everywhere) and real estate prices in Tokyo.
Fantastic video!
It also shows how’s charismatic you to be as a RUclips personality.
Thank you!
You can tell you guys had fun filming this. Great stuff as always!
Thank you!
Loved to see Paolo there!
I just gotta say Mrs Eats is a VIBE
Thank you!
Thank you so much for the detailed video ! I really love you’re acting ! ❤️❤️❤️
Again congrats on the fun content you provide...
amazing to watch you do all this
America is still far cheaper about $0.03 per toast. 3 cents per serving of rice. 4 cents per 8 oz coffee. $0.10 per hot dog. $2.66 a pound of beef. If you make it at home and buy from walmart or wholesale clubs.
New to your channel, love your sense of humor. your videos are fun to watch and you are adorable
Thank you!!
I'm really surprised! I live with my wife for a few months now in Warsaw (Poland) and we usually spend around 1300$ per month, but with much, much smaller average salary than in Japan!
Oh!! Time to lie in Japan!
@@MrsEats It seems so!
Great editing especially in the first 5 minutes!
Thank you!
Mrs Eats is officially the cutest woman on youtube, if not the whole internet. Love your content, love your sense of humor, need more Hancho! (I probably said that wrong)
Dammit!!!!!! I was tricked
This is so true! I lived in Japan for almost half a decade, and it's really not as expensive as others make it out to be. I have to agree that fresh fruits in Japan do tend to have insane prices, though - especially depending on which area of Japan you live in.
That ring tone is amazing
You forgot my weekend カラオケ bar tabs. Maybe have to double that. Oh, my trips to マクドナルド. . . and noodle shops. Maybe tipple. I have a house in 神戸三宮. When Japan finally opens back up, I have to accidentally on purpose meet you guys. Love the videos.
Yes if you are party guy it is more expensive!!
They were 19 at the time
Hi, Mrs. Eats! I'm your new subscriber here. Your video is so fun and informative. Thank you!
I liked this video a lot. Fun and informative. I was vibing. Its cool to see more of Japan too, even the mundane train station entrances, family mart (thank you Chris broad for my knowledge on that lol) or just the places you go daily. Its nice to see different things.
I adore watching Mrs. Eats on video! I totally want Kancho University tissues!
Hi Brunette!! Yes you can become new student of Kancho University!! We will give you tissue pack when you come here!
Not only do I learn a lot from your videos but they're also very funny 😄
This was a very good video. It made me laugh when you threw the papers in the air after work and then laid down with the JoJo figurine haha great sense of humor
Nice video for budget living in Osaka. If you eat lunch at restaurants daily, and have a decent sized place for a western person, your cost will be double whats listed at the end of the video. Triple for Tokyo. The good part is you can scale up or down, based on your budget. Other countries do not have that flexibility.
Nice watch to start the day!
Thank you! have a great day~
If I had to guess, I'd say your "Osaka suburbs" is Hirakata City. 😊
The daily after 6 bento discounts at Top World and Sanco are awesome.
the good thing is that some of the listed items/activities are optional to do or have which can save money.
Such a great breakdown! Internet is so cheap in Japan! I pay $70 for fiber I'm in pretty lucky. Some people pay $100 and only have 1 real choice!
I would have some questions though:
1. Is it normal to not have a drink to your lunch?
2. you showed the fish filet which was plenty and rather cheap. How about prices for different meat with such portions? I am asking as I am allergic to fish, so I wonder what would I pay for meat instead?
I love this! It’s like a parody of “In The Day Of…” ❤️
As always, entertaining and informative video from Mrs Eats and a cameo from Mr. Eats!
Thank you!
I really feel like I saw you the other day at starbucks I was so happy 😊😁 but then I had to order my coffee..for a mixed drink for a night cap... I wish I was you
i love your videos so much! I definitely started my morning right today with some good laughter ^^
Thank you!
Its actually cheaper living in Japan than my home county in the Caribbean… Makes sense though since we have to import over 90% of things.
Oh!! Caribbean sound so expensive!
