    That is one of the best cycling films I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing, I can't believe somebody actually gave it a thumbs down!

    what inspiring history, real tough cyclists enduring the elements and heavy terrain, in loose heavy clothing, no gloves, hats or glasses and pushing gears that most bikes don,t have now.
    awesome video!
    thanks

    lovely stuff, I was in the new brighton wheelers as a schoolgirl, I still ride now in my 60s, the bikes were beautiful, mostly hand made then, wow, I have had a lot of vintage bikes, thanks subscribed x

    Does this bring back memories. My name is Mick Patton I rode for the North Shields Poly C C.
    I live in Australia on the Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane.. I still ride and compete.
    2016 I won the World Grand Fondo road race. 70+. Div.
    Would be really good to hear from anyone from that era. There were a lot of familiar faces.

    Bloody hardcore! Chapeau! Reminds me of January 200k audax run a few years ago. The only time it didn't rain was when it was snowing.

    Interesting to see a handful of riders appear to be using hub gears, but everyone of them is pretty hardcore to be riding in those conditions. Great stuff.

    I know the route Jon Bayley, not in detail but it's generally familiar. Although only 3 years old when this was filmed I'm from that part of Northumberland. What a great film. Hardy folks indeed. Makes me appreciate the better clothing we have now although that was a rough day whatever Rapha could have provided!

    Classic footage ~ I love those roads & have had many memories of both racing & training around there. Most of the route looks familiar but if anyone knows the exact route please do post a link up.
    Some familiar names in there too, I was just a kid racing at schoolboy level in the 80's & I'd hear tales of legendary rides & races with the Baty brothers, Mike McSkimmings, the Hepple brothers & all of the Tyne Velo, Cheviot & Tyne Road Club guys. Great days, the Blind runs (anyone else remember them?) were legendary.

    Almost as tough as Dutch children cycling to school in winter on the Verylongcowpooproad with a headwind while you can't use your smart-phone because of the damn gloves!

    I really like the way they rode on regular bicycles and didn't need a special "gravel bike" and they rode in all weather and in regular clothing! Classic! Were those geared bikes? I can't tell from the film.

    • @stephaniekent8483
      @stephaniekent8483 4 года назад +2

      yes geared bikes, usually only 5 or 10 speed .

    Just seen the conditions further north, so I have my answer - riders were 'harder' then

  • @jeffbrunton3291

    Wonderful, thank you so much. I grew up in the Newcastle area, cycling in the 60s and 70s so this brings back happy memories. I still have my bikes from that era, which I ride daily. Bikes may have improved a lot since then but have the riders?

    Anybody know the route bits are mentioned - Haymarket, Gosforth, Bilsmoor, Cragside, Wooler, Capheaton etc. But this could be something to rival the EMC's 1944.

    • @KarlOnSea

      I was thinking the same thing - this looks like an epic route for a day ride!

    • @JMJC1
      @JMJC1 7 лет назад +4

      Roughly: Newcastle-Rothbury-Alnwick-Wooler-Elsdon-Capheaton-Newcastle.
      On Mapometer comes out at 127miles.
      Excellent movie by the way.

    When cycling use to be proper. Nowadays, kids wouldn't do this. No grit and determination. Hardcore in those days.
