I make decks a s well but I have some tips as well I use 400 grit sand paper and it works super good to finish it

Also use 5 ply of veneer 3 of the veneer grain going vertical and 2 going horizontal so it would be like this 1 vert 2 horizontal 3 vert 4 horizontal 5 vertical

I would stay away from using wood glue. Polyurethane glue works best. I've been using Gorilla Glue and haven't had any issues👍
