(EP 240)
ℹ️ About this episode:
On this episode of LivinRvision, we are Living The Van Life with More North Carolina as we hop around the state of North Carolina in search of historic places and things. If you’re a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, you may like our first stop that takes you to Mount Airy, North Carolina, where Andy Griffith grew up. A little touch of Mayberry with a “sweet” surprise!
Next we utilize our AllStays app to find a place to empty our black and gray tanks and we find a beautiful campground with a totally different tidbit of history to it that was totally unexpected.
Then we have some decisions to make on where to go next for our next little piece of history. That’s when we find a historic Clamshell Shell Oil Station building that is the only one left standing.
During this trip, we’ve been trying to make our way to see some friends that we haven’t seen for a long time. Then we opened up our Harvest Host app looking for somewhere to stay that would put us in close proximity to where they live and that is when we found a Harvest Hosts distillery that is located in the same town that our friends live and…we just happened to be coming during the once a year timing when the fishermen (and women) come from all over to fish at the Rockfish Capital of the WORLD!
We hope you enjoy this episode!

Love these type of videos where you show normal life.
We stumbled in on Weldon Mills as well through Harvest Host and had a little deja vu from this video. Great place to spend the night. We caught the last tour of the day and enjoyed a tasting as well. Good people at Weldon Mills and we came home with a few of their special items.
Mt airy is a neat town. We were there during Mayberry Days in September one year. During Mayberry Days it’s all about Andy Griffith and the Andy Griffith Show. There are people that play the characters from the show, and boy do some of them look a lot alike the original cast…. Uncanny! I forget how many days the Mayberry Days last, but they have events everyday of the event. We ate at Barney’s Cafe. It was pretty good. We saw a parade, heard Charlene Darlin sing, went in the courthouse, and the Andy Griffith Museum. It’s fun if you ever get a chance to visit during that time. Safe travels!!
Looks like a great place! Thank you for choosing a site that best matched your rig size. That was very considerate of you.
Always enjoyable riding along, seeing the scenery, tapping our feet to the tunes. We had to quickly avert our eyes when Michelle found the pie shop (we just started a new diet today), otherwise, you guys keep delivering quality videos with great variety. Such a pleasure to begin our Saturday mornings with you. ❤ Rick, Maggie & Penny 🐕 P.S. Penny stands on all fours, like a sentry, intently watching every episode. No kidding. Her favorite show!
🧡😊🤓 We should give a shout out to Penny sometime just so you can tell us her reaction. 😂 She’s such a sweet pooch!
Mayberry is a nice campground. We have stayed there several times. We use it as an overnight stop when traveling to Myrtle Beach. We so need to get into town one of these times
Such beauty and history are on the east coast. I can just smell the rain as it landed on your windshield. I LOVED the music that kept tempo with your windshield wipers. Amazing! There nothing like southern peach and apple pies, IMO that is. Mayberry brought back fond memories. I'll watch this one again later today for sure. I gots the Saturday "jump and run" schedule going. Happy travels!
Love how in your travels you always find these little hidden gem stops. You might have not gotten me out of that pie shop.......lol Safe travels !!!
😂
The pie lady had a good day! Mt Airy looks like a need place to visit. Love all the old cars. 😎🥸🤓
I was in Mt Airy last month. That pie shop smelled SOOO good! We ate lunch at Barney's Cafe, and stayed at the Fancy Gap KOA. I was there with a vintage camper group.
That would be pretty cool to stay overnight in Andy's boyhood home. You should do that sometime. I've heard there are many places like that across the country. I know you can stay in the house from the movie Short Circuit. Beautiful scenery as always.
Great job as usual! Music is always great!
We really enjoy your videos !
Hi folks, always enjoy your videos! My wife Deb and I have stopped numerous times at Mayberry Campground on our way from home in Ocala to where we spent many years raising our family in SW Pennsylvania. Keep up the good work!
So my husband Bob And you were at the water station at balloon fiesta at the same time and we just missed crossing paths here at the distillery!!! Apparently you left and we were one of the campers that pulled in. We must’ve just missed you! The only one there when we pulled in was the blue truck/5th wheel and The motorhome and us were at the front together checking in. Turns out the people from the motorhome were Angie and Al who are friends with Phil and Stacy from you me and the RV!! We both got parked, went inside, took the distillery tour and hung out that evening. When we came back out the parking lot was completely full! In your video we were the dark blue GMC pick up and solitude fifth wheel in the middle. Angie and Al were the motorhome on the end. We met The people in the reflection kind of about where you were parked. They went on the tour with us also. They had a sweet big old dog with them. ❤️ They were very nice also! And we did a tasting with the guy around back by you that you said left early. He was really nice also. He had to head out early. So did the tasting, bought his wife a bottle and headed to bed. We met some other people that weren’t from harvest host but really nice. ended up chatting with the owner/bartender until closing. What a really nice place. And that was quite the storm that night. We got soaked walking up to the building. We missed the trolley and didn’t want to unhook. And we missed our friends from balloon fiesta we will be traveling with this summer by one day. They were at the distillery the day before! How funny would that have been, a 50th anniversary balloon fiesta reunion lol maybe one day we will have some pie together!!! Enjoy your travels, hopefully see you out there again! And thanks for the great video and drone footage of our rig and truck! Lol! Within the hour of you leaving we were probably outside packing up and chatting for a while with Angie and L so that would’ve been funny if we saw you guys go past! Happy travels again!
Wow! One of these days we’ll surely meet up. We seem to have the same ideas of places to go. 🧡😊🤓
What a fun town to see and tour ! Love the Andy griffin show (yikes we are old) Brian good job on the whistling ! You nail it 😂! Michelle , I am amaze how you find so many wonderful pie places in 🇺🇸 America ! Your both so healthy .. I guess I just need to eat more pie to get thinner !😂😂 safe travels! Your fans from Ankeny Iowa !
It was such a blessing to meet you in Henderson, NC and a double blessing to have you come to our home! We were surprised and thrilled when we found out you took the time to come to our home town! I'm so thankful you enjoyed your early birthday pie! Sorry I didn't put candles on it, but you can't remember how old you are 😂
Be safe traveling and we hope to see you again soon. We love y'all and we mean it!
BTW thanks for showing the funeral home we work at as you passed by. Also the video coverage of Weldon and the Roanoke River was awesome. Anyone interested in fishing for rockfish this is the place to come.
🧡😊🤓
Thank you. Beautiful rainbow
That area is so beautiful, thanks for the tour...
Nice to see this town again. We stayed at the campground a few years back and visited many of those places in town.
Brian and Michelle, this is the second time my husband and I have followed in your footsteps. We went to Mackinac Island about a month after you were there and now I see that you were at Weldon Mills a little more than a month before we were. We just spent the night there on 5/30. We also just checked out Pie Heaven today based upon your recommendation 😄. We live in VA and are spending some time in FL, GA and SC. Blessings and safe travels to you!
We stayed at Mayberry campground last year on our summer 2022 trip. Really nice place. Mt. Airy was an awesome place to visit, as was the Andy Griffith museum.
Wonderful video!👏👏👏 Those pies look delicious! I'm so glad you featured Mount Airy! 😊I have wondered what that was like because my children's favorite series on DVD is The Andy Griffith Show. Thanks to your channel, my bucket list is increasing!😂
Good to know, Thanks
Those pies looked so good!! Thanks for another great video!
We from North Carolina we going this September to that camp ground.. this will be first time We going for Andy week .
Great video! I love drone shots, btw. Interesting and busy Harvest Hosts. Bad hair day, lol.
Sorry you didn't have time for Pilot Mountain, there's a nice trail around the dome and views of Winston Salem on a clear day. Also Old Salem is worth a stop next time in W-S. I'm looking forward to your New River Gorge visit. Love that area, I've done white water rafting there several times and attended a Bridge Day (base jumping in October).
This was fun! Loved the Mt. Airy tour. Your music for this episode was perfect! Spot on for every part. Thanks for bringing us along. That chocolate pie looked amazing! I thought the peach from the Pie Shop looked yummy, too! Safe travels...see you next week. Much love from SC, Jane ❤🙏
Thank you for an enjoyable video. Love to watch your explorations. Michelle, I would want some vanilla ice cream with those pies.
Definitely, I’m with ya! 🤓
Nice place. Enjoyed. Ty
You guys should have checked out Old Salem while in Winston Salem, NC Really cool place. Maybe next time.... 😃
Thanks. We were just passing through and didn’t get time.
Another great video , Charleston SC
Great video! ❤
Very nice place
NC was booming until manufacturing and textiles went global. Now my home state is all financial institutions , a few tech companies and tourist stops.
Ty for info
I wish could see more about any van problems or issues?. I'm in process of choosing between the Turismo / Terrino. Deciding factor would be the black macerator or lack of. Have probably viewed all your videos. Thanks so much. Continued success and safe travels.
We are grateful that we haven’t had any issues worth mentioning. Lol I’m the last van, we mentioned rain leaking in by the AC and found that the bolts had come loose, but we have not had that issue with this van and have now had this van longer than the first one.
Like most things, it’s the luck of the draw very often, did the people before look after it well did they always get it serviced on time, and was it a Friday build, or a Monday build, these things affect things more than you think, but mostly if it’s in really good nick, and they’ve got all the service records, you cannot do anymore. That’s how we judge things in the UK.
You were in our town, Winston Salem!!! We’ve been in Winston for 10 years and still haven’t seen the shell station!😆. As always enjoyed your video!!
Just found your channel love it and subscribed
Glad you’re enjoying it, thank you! 🧡😊🤓
Do you ever stay at Boondockers Welcome host spots? We love them too. We are actually Hall of Fame hosts ourselves, hosting almost 300 families over the past three years. We’ve met the best people, as RVing folks are the best!
We usually just stay at a Harvest Hosts. We don’t get a lot of time to stop and chat a lot when we are “on a mission”. 😂
@@LivinRVision we have some visitors who like to chat and some who keep more to themselves. Many work on the road too, so sometimes leave late, after working all day from their rig. Everyone is different and sometimes we are busy and don’t have time to visit either.
Hey Brian and Michele, does that Gretch rv get up the mountains alright? Does it have plenty of power? Good episode!
It always does just fine.
Been watching your channel for awhile. Brian remind me of a young Jerry Lewis.
Hi- I really enjoy your videos. I’m curious about the caption of this one though, “Not worth it” - it looked like a good trip- so, which part were you referring to? Or is it referring to something else that I missed. 😊
In the video in the exact same scene as the thumbnail, I said “it is not worth it” for us to stay at the campground that we dumped the tanks at especially when we have to get up the next morning and hurry to move before Michelle has to sign in for work with her employer. It seems like a waste of money for one night when we don’t even need the hookups either. Hence, “it is not worth it.”
Not clickbait.
@@LivinRVisionahhhh yes, I remember you guys talking about that. And as usual, I was over thinking it! Thanks for clearing it up for me! 😊
Thank you for the video. Im hoping to van travel next year. I wont be able to do it in the luxury of a sprinter van, but i cant wait to explore america
Spend less time worrying about the type of vehicle and more time practicing. Get out and camp with what you have. Experience will count for tons more than the brand of van. We live in a Promaster full time and meet people Al, over north and Central America driving anything you can imagine.
We agree, experience is important and with that being said, experience also has proven to do your research on what you are going to travel in because it can make a huge difference in your experience. Frequent breakdowns and things falling apart can quickly take away from your enjoyment as well as comfort. You’ll notice a big different in comfort in some models also…sitting, sleeping and driving/traveling.
Good to see you guys still rocking the Greco! Heading for Iowa anytime soon?
Yes, our recent videos are all during our way up to Iowa so that I have content to edit while visiting family and friends on the weekends while in Iowa.
Love NC
You’ve had several different rigs now, if you had to pick only one to stay with, which would it be? (I really like the convenience of your Sprinter)
This specific Grech model has given us the least amount of stress and has made our travels the easiest. Every single one has positives and negatives and it’s hard to choose sometimes which is most important. The cost of this Grech model is fairly equivalent to a new F250 and Airstream Classic 33FB like we used to have. If comparing used models, it would depend on those values. This van has a lot more capabilities and makes Dry camping so much easier and so much more nimble. This 24’ van is only just under 2 feet longer than the F250 super cab and there is a great distance from the back wheels to the rear bumper that allows you to park in many normal parking spaces with the back end hanging over the curb as long as there’s no sidewalk, shrubs or incline behind the curb. So very similar to driving a truck, except you always have everything with you regardless of where you go. Clothes, shoes, food, restroom, shower, bed, towels, misc…everything. You don’t realize how much that means to you until you start traveling that way. On the other end, some don’t care about those things and want a bigger bathroom (we use ours but also utilize the ones at a campground and sometimes a truck stop, which are surprisingly clean) and more living space, a bigger kitchen etc. all those things come with a bigger rig and eventual headaches and can be more dangerous for traveling and frequent items breaking due to all the movement and poor manufacturing quality. We didn’t start the lifestyle to find a nice house to travel in or to find a cheaper way to live. For us, it’s all about the places we get to explore and the memories while our health is still good. This is more info than you asked for, but we feel it helps explain in more detail why we like the van the most. We wouldn’t feel the same with just any van model though, we like having a closet, the 1,260 amp hours of lithium and no noisy generator. We don’t ever have to worry about getting fuel for a generator and it just keeps charging itself as we drive. You can literally go forever without needing shore power if you want to. We like to alternate once in a while. If a person wanted to, they can more easily get in and out of a hotel with a van than they can with a larger rig. All of this in mind, it all depends on what is more important to each of us. You also have to keep in mind, if someone is a taller or larger person, they are likely going to be miserable trying to camp for long periods of time.
@@LivinRVisionsuper helpful! I’m still dreaming and trying to convince my husband to do what you are doing. Have you thought about a custom build now that you have experience on the road?
It’s crossed our minds but probably won’t. A lot to consider.
Hi Friends
Another great video guys! What kind of fishing tournaments did you fish? Bass?
Yes, 99.99% were Bass tournaments quite a bit. I used to fish the “Crappiethon” many years ago but that was only a once a year thing.
My wife and I also did the tagged crappiethon at Grand lake St. Mary’s, Oh. in the eighties as well but never caught anything with the tag. Fished a couple bass tournaments as well locally but never caught anything on tournament day, lol. Miss my bass boats for sure but life seems goes on with new adventures. You both have safe travels and live life to its fullest, God Bless!
We just found you and love the way you travel like us. We live near Gatlinburg Tennessee. We have full hookups at our house if you plan to visit the smokies. Where are you based out of?
Welcome! 🧡😊🤓
We sold everything over 4 1/2 years ago so we are full-time. No other house. Originally from Iowa.
That is so very nice of you! We hope we have the privilege of meeting y’all sometime soon! 🧡
i see your videos every day , excellent work and successes ,Jackson from Venezuela, soon I will be in Houston in my RV ,which areas you recommend to go by motorhome to Houston , beaches
The only beach close to that area that we have been was Magnolia Beach, which is a great beach to camp at for any size RV. No worries of getting stuck. Very hard sand surface.
for 2 people who see a trailer better? or the Vans you have now ? that you see more comfortable
Hello, congratulations on your channel, the videos, I like the background music they play, a technical question, now with this rv, how many miles do you drive per year, and how many miles does your rv take, greetings from Mexico
Thanks! We’ve been driving about 20,000 ish in a years time.
Thanks for the video.
Interesting.
How can that be Rockfish capital of the world?
On Lake Texoma (border between Oklahoma and Texas) we can keep 10 Rockfish (we call the "Striped Bass" , or "Stripers", with no minimum size limit, and only 2 over 20 inches. They are caught up to nearly 45 lbs, below the lake, and excess of 55 lbs in other parts of Texas.
Yeah, I realize that and that’s a good question for someone in that area or the city. I’ve always called them Stripers also, but if you look it up, they are known by either name. They have big fish statues all over the city and signs that say Rockfish Capital of the World. Not sure how they received that claim but fishermen come from all over during spawning season.
As you drive through Florida the signs say, "Clean Restrooms Next Exit". When you get to Georgia the signs say, "Pe cans Next Exit"🤔
😂😂
Just curious -What do you do if in an extreme weather condition? Do you go somewhere safe or stay in the van.
We’ve been lucky with the weather. However we would move to safety if heading our way.
You should rename your channel “The Cracker Barrel travelers”.😂
Hey when traveling why spend bucks with the cost of gas!!! And they paid with a meal.
😂 it is just so handy for us when we are traveling from place to place short term stays, especially when we don’t need the hookups. It’s been a real game changer for us for traveling. ( The Starada-Ion not Cracker Barrel 😂😉).
Pie Girl? Lol
I laughed too! It’s perfect though and cute!🥧💗
Does the $10 dump fee include dumping your trash also?
Yes. They do not care if you dump your trash also, we did ask.
I once called my wife Princess. She swiftly informed me that she is the Queen. Aye-Aye, Ma’am.
😂
Pilot Mountain…Mount Pilot? Coincidence?
mayberry
Ok what did you think of Mt.Airy ? I’m just curious what people think of it. I live here so,I know what I see just wondering what other people see. Thank you!
We think it’s a cute little town with some history that brings back wonderful memories of the Andy Griffith show. Pie place is great too! 🧡😊🤓
Those twins both had wives, and had a total of 21 children, WTH !
