I pulled out 8 bags of clippings by doing just a single pass. I didn't have it in me to make a second pass. However, I did manage to put down some Essential-G and Lime. Should make for a great start to the upcoming season.
Ron, Thanks for the information and Great Content. Living in Delaware I’ve always wonder how to get a little Green Up faster. This tip trick will definitely be applied🙏🏾👊🏽😉👊🏽🙏🏾
I think this may be the first time I've ever seen you use the grass catcher on either mower. This is one of the main reasons I keep my riding mower + bagger. The older I get, the rider makes cleanup a cinch for these old bones. Also...nice to see the shots inside the Henry Palace! Although for a moment, I almost thought we were gonna see you buzz your hair on RUclips. 🤭
I was thinking about it LG. I don’t know about palace. 😎 Scalping season does make we want a riding mower occasionally. Noting like a sit down vacuum. 😂

Hey Ron. Love the show. QQ. I have Empire Zoysia now @ abt 2.5 inches. It needs to be detached. Can I cut it down abt an inch, detach, and aerate? And when is the best time? Thanks Ron!

Not sure what part of the country you're in but if GA Feb - early March is good. I would wait until April/May to aerate: ruclips.net/video/bbwLD15nYu0/видео.html Appreciate you watching the content.
Hey Ron, at the 3:13 mark looks like you went over it with another machine to cut the grooves? Is there another video coming on this or can you share some info? Looks like you did a dormant scarify. Thanks!
It can be done at either time Peter B. The positive to getting rid of it now is sooner green up and more pleasant temps when doing this kind of work. The benefit of doing it when the grass is already growing is the lawn won’t look ugly for quite as long. I have Bermuda which is brown this time of year anyways. So from an appearance standpoint, there’s little difference.
That's a tough one KingKon. Bifenthrin mixed with the Mirimichi Green Pest control - golfcourselawn.store/products/mirimichi-green-pest-control-free-shipping is a pretty potent combo. If you want to see how bad the infestation is, mix dish soap with water in a 5 gallon bucket and pour in small area of your lawn. Should make them come to the surface.
KingKon, last summer on Ron's live show I asked this question. One of Ron's listeners recommended Acephate. I tried it and the next morning there were quite a few dead ones on the grass and driveway. I am going to alternate that with Bifen this year. I feel your pain...they've destroyed parts of my lawn and they are hard to get rid of!
Ron, great content as always. I’m in North Texas, should I wait until there is a certain average temperature before I scalp? Didn’t want to do it too early.
I'm in Dallas and I have St Augustine lawns. I did my first scalping yesterday, using the 2 setting on my Troy-Bilt mower, which pulled off a large city garbage can full of "straw". The grass is green underneath. I have a Greenworks de-thatcher to use next. Fortunately, we are coming to the end of over overnight sub-freezing temps.
Although there are people that do it, I wouldn't recommend scalping St. Augustine. At least not to level that we do Bermuda. If your height of cut is currently 4 inches and you want to lower to 3 to do a bit of cleanup, that's ok, but I wouldn't take it down to dirt like you see being done on Bermuda or Zoysia lawns.
Can I scalp before I start seeing the grass trying to begin turning green? - if I get more cold weather/freezing temps, will that cause any damage if I have scalped? (Central NC/Raleigh)
I've never experienced damage from cold snaps after scalping Mike. Granted temps likely get a bit colder where you are than northeast GA. Bermuda is very resilient. It would take extended periods of sub-freezing temps to cause damage. Bermuda would recover pretty quickly from it once temps warmed up. Seriously difficult to permanently damage it. Hi BrewCrewFishimg. Without seeing your soil test results, the 12-12-13 is generally a good way to start the season assuming your soil needs the phosphorus. I would scalp prior to applying the fertilizer. Outside of that, keep up with your mowing. Sounds like you’re on the right track for this season.
Hi James. It depends on how low you go. Scalping is really hard on your reel. I had my mower serviced after the scalp work. I'd plan to backlap or sharpen after scalping.
