      Thanks!! I replied to the 3rd video of yours on rivnuts.. I don't think I'll be able to use the tool.. Your videos on how to use wrenches will probably work better for me. I don't have much arm strength to squeeze the tool. Not to mention there's not much room to get the tool in where I need to put the rivnut in.

    One commenter asked how you know how much stroke to use and you replied that you use a two-step process to not overdo it, which is fine. The tool I received came with pretty understandable instructions and a chart that lets you determine based on rivnut size and thickness of the metal you have, how much travel you should look for using the gauge in millimeters of travel. This allows you to get the right amount of "crush" without underdoing it (spinning rivnuts) or overdoing it and possibly breaking the mandrel/die.

    You'll use this tool more than you think. Suggestion - do a test insert on a scrap piece so you can see how much pull is needed to set the insert. Especially on smaller sizes. Otherwise you can snap the mandrel with too much pull. You never pull handles enough to touch each other.

I have everything done, now time for the threaded insert. But, I don't want the insert to spin. And so I don't know if I need a specific type of insert made of Aluminum Brass or Steel?
      On RUclips to hopefully find what insert type can I use so I can torque to bolt to roughly 10ft/lbs without spinning it on this sheet metal?

    I was hoping you would touch on yow to adjust the plunge/stroke depth on this tool. Thats what the little gauge on the bottom is for. Its possible to damage the rivet nuts themselves if you dont have this setup properly and you pull beyond the crush capacity of the inserted riv nut thereby essentially rendering that installed nut useless bc the threads have been destroyed

    • @VideoShowMeHow
      @VideoShowMeHow  2 года назад

      Yes you're correct, I usually just tread right down with the tool at max open, then insert full close, open 1/2 twist, compress again and perfect every time 👍 If you go too far it pulls the whole cylinder out of whack to the point you can't thread anything as you say

    How about describing the feeling of how you know when the rivet nut is tight enough. Very rarely do we have the opportunity to see the other side to look at the back of the rivet nut. I was just doing this and for some reason I had to keep on tightening the “handily turntable thing“ that you were talking about for the rivet nut to grab. How about explaining that; where it’s supposed to be at the start of the operation.

  • @Metalcop5150

    Probably the best video on RUclips, showing how to install Rivnuts!! The only thing I would add; the small one hand install tool is great for the smaller sized Rivnuts, where all that torque isn't required. You can use the large tool, that you did, for all sizes, *if you're careful. Its very easy to break the smaller mandrel or dies with all that leverage.

    Something I have not seen on any video is an indication of how much to compress the rivnut and when to stop. It is not too bad when you can see both sides and so see the amount that has been compressed but when the backside of the insert is not visible then what? How much is the correct amount of compression? The too used is also very large so a consideration for tight/confined spaces has to be made to determine the usefulness of each type of rivnut tool. Great video though, well explained.

    • @hita2950
      @hita2950 Год назад

      The appropriate amount of compression can be determined through experience and familiarization, or by using a product equipped with a stroke gauge that accurately measures compression. The ideal compression for achieving a neat crimp also depends on the size of the rivet nut and the thickness of the panel, information that can be found in the tool's user manual.

      The video shows the tool needs to be closed (handles together) to make the crip. However it's the following clip it shows you removing the tool from an open tool (handles wide open). Is the crimping action close then open handles or just close handles? Confirming the end state of the handles wasn't just a result of video editing. Thank you. Great video otherwise. The company should be paying you royalties because their instructions suck.

    I needed to drill out a hole on my jeep fender to install one of these inserts for an arb twin air compressor. Someone used this tool in stead an I assume put in the wrong size insert. It was not the one supplied by arb. So after putting in the screw he also supplied, it screwed in maybe a quarter of the way and the insert turned with the screw. I could get the screw out as everything turns together. I dremeled the head off the screw so I could uninstall the compressor bracket. How do I remove the insert and the headless screw?

      Would be an interesting experiment, thinking it would depend how thick and if it would crack. I could see it working though. Let us know how you go?

      @@VideoShowMeHow its 1/4 marine plywood resin soaked gelcoat topped with splatter paint finish. Was thinking light sand to flatten paint, pre drill to rivet od, insert with either 3m 5200 or thickened resin, compress. I'm sure that will cause mild stress cracks in gelcoat immediately surrounding fastener, but would likely hold. Its the longevity I'm concerned with. I'm gonna try w 5/16x18 since small enough if goes all wrong I can just rip out and resin over easily. I'll share as I learn.

      @@herewegofans I reckon it would probably work ok. Maybe not for anything high torque but general fixing would likely be alright. Remember the stainless if in and around water (I'm sure you already have) 🤞👍

      @@VideoShowMeHow the scope of the project is design a method to secure starboard hdpe to fiberglass bulkhead that is removable to service electrical distribution setup when needed. Previously used screws and adhesive but removal is a labor nightmare. Gonna try this to see if I can get working and just use light thread lock to assist with watertight and vibration on craft. Oversharing I know, but seems you like a good challenge so sharing should you wanna attempt also lol.

    Oh thank you! I didn’t know that these things existed! I do believe this will work to fix my gate! The latch arm piece is just screwed into the colourbond tube vertical piece and when it blows in the wind the screw loosens. Drives me nuts as it makes even more noise, plus I’ve found it swinging open a few times. Not good with a dog and 8 chickens! I do have a question though. Do I need a specific sort of bolt? I’m guessing all the different metal screws I’ve bought trying to fix it in the last 8 years won’t have the right kind of thread. Actually, one more question. Do I need a certain kind of rivnut for outdoor use or are they all okay? I see there are shiny silver looking ones and brass coloured ones. Does it matter?

    • @VideoShowMeHow
      @VideoShowMeHow  3 года назад

      Yeah you can get stainless, make sure the bolt is high tensile, 8.8 min 👍

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 3 года назад +1

      @@VideoShowMeHow okay great. Thank you so much! I’ve ordered off eBay and there’s no mention of tensile strength so that means I’ve bought the el cheapos lol. I’ll use one of those first to work out what size I need and then will get a small packet of high tensile just in that size and replace it. I don’t have a need for an assorted pack of high tensile bolts at this point. Maybe I’ll love this little doovilacky so much that I’ll start using it everywhere, but if it just fixes that bloody gate it’ll be worth it.

      Cheers. They're meant for 6mm wire, the wire I used was a little smaller as I didn't have any thicker at the time. I wouldn't be going too thin, maybe 4mm max. If wanting smaller I would go to a different type of connector like deutsch plugs etc
