This is the most honest review I've seen so far. It took hours for Akai and Inmusic to catch up to all the demand. Servers were down all afternoon. I finally got it activated. I feel the same way about the quality of the stem separation so far. I hope it gets better. I'm curious to A/B separated tracks with this and Serato.
Thanks for giving a real world example of how separation works on the MPC. Like all other stem separation software, there's always artifacts and weird filtering issues, it'll never be perfect because of the nature of the technology no matter how much machine learning they throw at it, but it definitely is helpful and it definitely is dependent on source material. You can get some very good separations depending on what you're separating. And like you did, you can come up with some cool creative textures that you wouldn't have had before, with a little tweaking. Excellent video
This review seems a little different and more honest than what I got from watching Andy Mac. However, I'm amazed it works at all. Thanks for the honesty. That's important.
As a producer that also DJs, I've been using STEMS in Serato for quite a long time and once you get into it, there is no looking back. What i did find interesting, based on what you've sampled here, the AKAI STEMS seems like the v1 STEMS from Serato or Virtual DJ. Good, but not great. Although the STEMS for both of those DJ applications have moved on massively. So I'm expecting AKAI to follow a similar path of improvement. I'd also like to see Ricky's face when he hears he's been sampled!
Oh it's not an impression at all, this is bad quality, and i don't mind it too much, but what gets me is that this guy is one of the rare people who doesn't shimmer you into thinking it's a game changer. The others are quite cheeky, they're choosing the perfect tunes to stem split to make it look like akai's is doing a great job, tunes that aren't too busy and have already clearly separated tracks. But they won't tell viewers that most tunes are going to sound way more artefacty and fake/muffled/etc.. on this subpar splitter. Kinda rubs me the wrong way but hey, they gotta make money.
@@jimmypierson1980 if you listen to the STEM splitting from the v2 virtual DJ STEMS. A lot of the digital artifacts are massively reduced. You are right, that the results definitely depend on the source material, but the latest iterations of the tool have massively improved.
Well spoken. Serato's STEMs is currently best in class. I also DJ (on a rekordbox DDJ-1000). Rekordbox currently has STEMs but it's not really that great, especially when compared to Serato. In fact, STEMs are turned 'OFF' by default in Rekordbox.
Most honest Stem Sep review done on the MPC yet. Most other reviews seem to cherry pick content that makes sounds the STEM tech sound a little more unbelievable than it actually is - (currently). Considering it's an internet connected device getting updates, it will hopefully incrementally get better over time. That said, I own a 37 and I do love the machine. Seems after years of chasing their bubbles, AKAI has finally found some direction. Tefty? What's it like to work in the music version of the Enterprise D? Sick workspace!
Nice work Tefty! that bassline was on point. Now you have to re-review this when it's on standalone, to me that's where things get interesting. Hope to see more you and Memes, love those productions.
Thank you! Yeah more productions on the way. We had a bunch of projects come through end of last year, so we've been playing catch up on our own music.
Your face said it all!! Lol!! Definitely feeling that beat!!! You chopped that up real nice! I would love to see you sample more RUclips or vinyls. I'm diggin your style!
'Lets get some high hats from a sample pack* Says it all haha. I liked the sound design on the vox, some great sounding work shown here, just not convinced with drums but good for everything else which is wild when you think drum shots are the one thing that avoid copyright
Great video and track. That was a very unique way of using Stems, I enjoyed the result alot. I might try something similar for fun. Keep the great videos coming! ✌
Love my new AK-37 it’s the game changer in music production 2024. Wannabe emulators will follow (watch for Novation and Arturia) and definitely change the market.
Every time I hear your wife sing, I get goosebumps, that girl has some serious talent and beauty, the perfect combination for the musical entertainment business.
I wonder if the separation could have been a little cleaner if you were recording hotter. I could be way off base on the technical side of things, but I think it’d have more information to work with that way. Thanks for showing the workflow; great jams, too.
I'm waiting for standalone. I already use FL Studio which has stem separation. I'm surprised akai has delayed standalone stems release. Great track by the way! 🔥
I have a mpc x and was thinking of getting a mpc live 2 or key 37 for ideas when I’m out. Need a keyboard so might have to be the key 37. Also for so info some software called Melodyne first came out in 2001 and you could go into the samples and edit the note, I used it and was amazed, then in 2009 the brought out DNA, DNA Direct Note Access: Melodyne's unique DNA algorithms give you access to individual notes within chords, so you can not only correct wrong notes in piano or guitar recordings but also adapt samples of all kinds to match the harmonies of your project, introduce any number of variations and even “recompose” sample Seems to be a very similar tech. Just used in a different way.
Sometimes, the artifacts allow me to use those to put my vocals to a remix in time. Tiny tracing paper. I been using the free stem apps on my phone and have been going crazy. Lol. Technology is amazing.
Great honest review. I made it thru the Stems outage after a few[ nap] mins😅… Sampling is my lane. $10. and standalone …eventually 😆..it’s not a big deal it’s NOT perfect…. Dope RUclipsr collab 😉
Bought it when I got the email and I was stunned when it was just for the software…already have Serato Sample so redundant for me until it releases for standalone.
Yeah we're still waiting. I use standalone 95% of the time. I'm looking forward to sampling off my phone/tablet directly into the Key 37 and doing stems when it's available.
@@teftymusictechAlso be interesting to see how fast a standalone version can process stems. Can imagine the Akai processor being a bit slow fast compared to my M2 Macbook.
Nice video. You gave me an idea when you said the A.i. was trying to emulate the bass. Imagine you could use the stems to trigger VST's and you could fully customize your sound. 😊
You can. You have to copy the midi notes from the stem track to a plugin track and assign your sounds to each note that was copied to be triggered. I do it for drums mostly tho. I like taking a live drum track and then chop it. Then create a program and track it as played live. Then I assign like drumlab drums to the midi notes.
I use RipX for Stem separation on my pc, and just load the stems into my live 2. I will wait for standalone version I reckon. Its great for getting accapellas and adding your own music. Lots of creative potential. Even if just for fun 😎👌
Yeah I bet it’s tuned to more traditional content for stem separation. Probably expecting old school vinyl content that’s more band oriented. None the less, still fun to see what pops out.
@@teftymusictechActually i noticed most splitters are more about how busy the track is. Reverb too causes them great trouble. That's what bothered me about the other videos, they carefully chose which song to split to make it look like a game changer but really it's sort of subpar compared to other splitters. I hope akai will work on it but they are super late in the game.
Should've normalized the samples for us so we could actually hear them a bit better. Even with Sony MDRV6's I still couldn't really hear the samples after you stemmed them.
Very honest review! For $10 why tf not, right? Won’t get in until standalone is available - but I am very curious how thats going to sound on standalone.
Hey, quick question. Just wanted to get your perspective on it to have something to think about. In a previous video you have a modal Argon 8 and i also saw a novation peak. If you had to pick one, what would it be and why? Just curious.
Hi, when using a soundcard with mpc one I can get the vocal in the audio section but can't hear the beat on the mpc? Any thoughts on this? Seems like when leaving internal everything is muted. Any help appreciated 🙏
If a.i. is creating new stems from an original recording, after separated, those sounds are no longer the sampled composition, they become a new creation. Now to tell the lawyers 👀
When i try to update my MPC Software currently 2.13 to 2.14 it says my software is up to date ! On their website there is only 2.13 available. So Why they put out the stemseparation without providing the software versions needed to update ?
Its out now today for the the daw software. I updated mine through the inmusic software on PC. Problem is right now everyone's having problems with the activate button not existing in the plugin activation on the mpc hardware and software daw. Sure it'll be fixed, but there's always so many issues now activating your software.
This happened to me, just download 2.14 from your INMUSIC account, I saw it under my MPC section. After I did that and updated the software I was finally able to see STEM SEPARATION option. Then I had to press Activate about 15-20 times for it to work. I think there servers are just getting hit really hard. Good luck!
Yeah seems like the InMusic app is your best bet to get things downloaded and updated correctly. But the activation system seems to always have problems. I really hope they revamp it at some point.
Yes, officially the stem purchase can be activated on any modern MPC that's logged into your InMusic account, once it's released on standalone (probably a few months out).
Judging from your final remarks, I'm guessing that the results of MPC Stems are inferior to those of RipX (which I have). Even so, it'd be nice to have a fairly good stem extraction solution within the MPC software itself and not have to bounce between the two programs.
This. They’re late..but better late than never..let’s Get up to speed tho @Akai don’t rest on laurels type beats…ie flip that “stemmy pack” 💰into R&D [competition with those already in the game].
I’m not sure if I’ll buy this… it’s only $10 which is nothing, but when every-freaking-thing is copyrighted these days I couldn’t actually use what I sample anyway, at least not share it. OTOH, it makes a neat lo-fi effect to apply to your samples.
I share sampled beats on Instagram and only had one issue ever, and it was just blocked from playing in Russia only lol, and it was a loop i only added drums too so it’s really nothing to worry about tbh.

I'm still new to music production and still confused why people just sample copyrighted material like they own it. Wtf why, you'll go broke or to jail for this shit, it's criminal shit. Also, I don't find it particularly creative or impressive.
