    Hi Adam, we had exchanged correspondence when I considering the Inspire Sleep device. I just wanted to write and Thank You for your input. I wet ahead and got my device implanted 09/01/23 and activated 10/02/23. I have done an overnight in lab sleep study and an at home sleep study since receiving the device. This past Tuesday I went to get the results and now my unit is now set giving me the ultimate therapy. The surgery was a piece of cake, the incisions felt like a slight bruise, the only discomfort was my neck only when shaving, but now everything is good. I love this device, and I am sleeping better and more deeply now than I have in years. Thanks again ! If anyone is considering getting Inspire, do it if you can, but like you said and were quite correct, it is a journey that is well worth it.

      @@lisachambers6230 Hi Lisa, Just wanted to tell you my experience with Inspire. The surgery was a piece of cake for me. I was apprehensive about having something implanted in me. I watched just about every RUclips video on the device even watched the actual surgeries to gain information . After corresponding with Adam Heard and listening to the testimony of one of the patient’s on Inspire’s website I decided to do it.The incisions felt like a slight bruise and my neck was a little tender when shaving, but that didn’t last long. Soreness was from the surgeon installing the wire lead through my neck. Knowing what I know now, I would do it all again. I absolutely love it and it feels like I got my life back, I haven’t slept this well in years. Good luck.

    Hi Adam, just wanted to thank you for all your correspondence on the Inspire implant. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea 2.5 years ago with an AHI of 56. In the last year, I’ve lost 72lbs and recently had a new sleep study done, and I’m at a 17 AHI. I’ve been on cpap for the last 2.5 years and I hate it. All the issues you’ve had, I’ve had. It leaks, it wraps around my neck, I take it off and don’t realize it. My sleep doctor told me I can look into Inspire or an oral mouth guard now. I’m waiting on pre authorization from insurance for the Inspire appt, but after watching your videos, I feel like I know what to expect going into that appt. I also wanted to mention that I am a commercial truck driver, and I’m forced to wear the cpap for compliance, otherwise I can have my CDL revoked. So I’m really hoping that I can switch to either inspire, or the mouth guard soon. Thank you for your time, and I hope you’re still doing good on Inspire.

    Hey Adam, thanks for your insight and also for your service and care as a hospice nurse. Your shared experience has moved the needle for me to go ahead and get the treatment done. My main concern is that I'm very active: I'm a Forester, wildland firefighter, and a new hunter (shot my first blacktail this season!). I'm also an avid runner, weightlifter, and I enjoy chopping wood. During wildfire season, sometimes I will camp out for weeks at a time - having that device would help me not have to worry about going without a CPAP or logistically having to figure it out. A couple questions: will you have to go back in to get the device renewed at any future date? What kind of batteries does the remote take? How is the device powered is what i'm curious about. Thanks again!

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  7 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t see any problems for you. I do anything I want to. Every 10years or so I’ll have to get a new battery but I understand they can do that in the docs offfice. The remote uses AA batteries and they last a couple months at a time.

    Hi Adam, thank you for your super informative videos and for being so open about your experience! I’m one week out from implantation surgery. All seemed to go well but I’m starting to get concerned that my tongue weakness isn’t improving. My speech is slurred. The doc said not to worry but I’m concerned. Everything else (the pain, swelling, incisions) has been totally fine. But my tongue isn’t moving so well on that side so it’s hard to chew on that side and I sound a little drunk or cotton-mouthed. Is this temporary?

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад

      Not too crazy, I was 15 working on a table saw that someone else had previously changed the blade on and didn’t tighten properly. The blade wobbled hit the metal side of the table and broke two teeth off blade. One skimmed my shoulder leaving a scratch and the other lodged in my left neck missing my carotid artery by a millimeter. I was unaware that anything had happened until the instructor came running at me full speed and I thought he was trying to hit me but he was trying to put pressure on the wound. My parents were called, they came and got me and drove to the hospital. Doc said they could leave the metal in but it could move later and cut things so we decided to take it out since I was going into the military.

    My husband has an appointment for an evaluation for the Inspire device this Friday. They'll arrange for an additional sleep study at that time since it has been years since he's had one. He's had a C-pap for decade and he hates it. Most nights he rips it off his face and just goes back to sleep. He's got a deviated septum so it just is not the best for him. I worry about the apnea leading to pulmonary hypertension and ultimately right-sided heart failure. I worked critical care, I saw some sad cases and I hate the idea of him facing the possibility of being a cardiac cripple.
    I've been bugging him for years to look into the Inspire but an eval would have involved a trip out of state since it was so new and not many physicians/providers were offering it. But it has become more widespread and the nearest facility to offer it is only an hour away. Fingers crossed that he is a good candidate!

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад +1

      Wishing the best for your husband! I was the same way. Cpap would end up off in the floor because I couldn’t get comfortable with it on so I just didn’t wear it ever. Hopefully he will meet the criteria for inspire and can atleast have a chance for some improvement. It’s not perfect and cpap is still the best treatment but if you aren’t wearing it it doesn’t help. The inspire has been good for me.

    • @lilliputlittle
      @lilliputlittle Год назад

      @@AdamHeard We'll he just had his appointment today with the doc about his sleep study results and potential Inspire device treatment.
      No go. Over the years of chronic obstructive along with the use of the Cpap he has developed Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea. He now has both obstructive *and* central sleep apnea. Doc said that the cpap alone will not work but Inspire is a definite no-go. He's going to need to move up to a bi-pap. So he'll end up with a machine that I know he'll hate to use even more.
      And, the (retired) nurse in me is wondering about the need for supplemental O2 now and the need for a portable concentrator since we fly quite a bit and have a few trans-Pacific red-eye flights coming up in less than a year.

    Hi Adam I have been following your progress since I learned about Inspire. I have been on cpap since 2009 and I have hated it from day one, I have never felt energized when I wake up, pretty much feel tired most of the time even after my most recent sleep study and getting a new machine and mask. I am scheduled to the implant on September 1 and activation on October 2. My biggest concern is that that you mentioned about your tongue I think being irritated by rubbing on your teeth and being uncomfortable when your device has been turned up and is the movement annoying ? I am hoping to get all the benefits from this and hope it helps with my anxiety, depression and feeling like I don’t want to do anything unless it has to be done. Appreciate any input. Thanks

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад +1

      There was definitely an adjustment period to go through and it may take several weeks to get things dialed in. Mine has never been what I would call painful or severely uncomfortable. The movement of my tongue at one point was rubbing on the back of my teeth where I have some previous chipping and this caused a little irritation. I let my doctor and Inspire Rep know about it and they changed the programming so that different electrodes on the nerves were stimulated and this caused my tongue trajectory to change which stopped the rubbing. Best of luck and blessings to you!

    • @GTSman72
      @GTSman72 Год назад

      Hi Adam, I have a couple more questions. Sometimes it takes me an hour or more to fall asleep, what do you do if this is the case ? Can you feel your tongue movement when you are asleep ? It’s been over a year since your implant and journey, with all of “adjustments “ to get the device tuned in, would you do it all again and would you say it’s worth it ? Thanks for sharing your experience with us that are considering this treatment. Hope you do another video once the device is finally dialed in at its optimum effacing. Wishing you all the best !

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад +2

      I would say yes I would have it done again. I have had good experience with it. As for not getting to sleep right away, if it is taking you over an hour to get to sleep that could be a whole other issue that needs to be addressed. I have never had much trouble getting to sleep usually. On rare occasions I have been still awake or just dozing off when it starts activating and in those cases I either turn it off to reset the delay or I hit the pause button which gives me another 10-20 minute delay. Usually when I go to bed I am so tired I am out before the initial delay is done.

    body fat 9.1 % , 75% blockage of the "widow-maker" last dec (22) repaired with stent, heart ablation feb 23. afib corrected (so far) , sleep study/ test showed 84 occurences per hour lasting 17-20 seconds each , 29% were due to brain NOT telling me to breath. (as you know inspire says 25% is max for their guidelines)
    Now- i have been evaluated by ENT and can take the Inspire, medicare and insurance company have approved me for the procedure set for august 2 , 2023.
    been trying cpap since end of feburary , 6 different masks but none fit or work well, AIR leaks everywhere-- big nose and sunken cheeks - i guess! remember air pressure 17-20 lbs.

If you use the remote to turn on the device, and you fall asleep sooner than 30 minutes, does the tongue stimulation begin before the 30 minutes have passed? In other words, will the breathing sensor note that sleep has begun and activate at that time, or can activation not start until the 30 minute window has passed?

I have to take the batterie out in order to reconnect. Then, the implant seemed to turn itself off after a couple hours ago. Hi Adam, I have watched all your videos and want to thank you for sharing your journey. I am scheduled to have my implant surgery on June 2. I have already had the pre procedure and have been approved by insurance. My questions are: 1) you mentioned that if you drink or eat with it turned on it could be dangerous. Sometimes at night I drink water. what will happen if I accidentally leave it on? 2) I am supposed to go to Iceland Aug 1st. Sounds like with your set back it might not be enough time before I go or have an issue while Im there. Im supposed to be activated. June 28th is my activation date. 3) Can I drink alcohol or will that have bad effects? Thanx in advance, Dan

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад +1

      If you drink or eat while it’s activating you could get choked due to the airway opening while trying to swallow. It’s best to get in the habit of automatically pausing it if you get up in the night. You will probably be ok for your trip, if it does get activated on June 28th you will still just be on the lowest setting and shouldn’t have a great probability of any issues the first couple of weeks. As far as I know, alcohol should not be a problem.

    Adam, nice videos and thanks for all the updates. I am thinking of getting the Inspire and wanted to know snored prior to CPAP and Inspire? If so, did the Inspire device reduce or eliminate the snoring? I can bring the house down with my snoring when not using the CPAP so this would be a nice improvement to not have to wear a CPAP and not snore.

    Thanks so much for your videos Adam. I have a couple questions -- I apologize as you've probably answered these already. I was approved for the procedure but I'm really worried about having such a large device (relatively speaking) implanted in the front of my chest. How visible is it with your shirt off? Can you feel it thru your skin? The ENT doctor said it "would be visible but look like a natural contour, not an outline of the device". He was really pushing the device, a little bit more than necessary I felt.

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад +2

      The device itself is not all that visible. Just a bump. There is about an inch and a half long 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide scar though. I personally don’t really even notice it.

      @@AdamHeard Thank you Adam! It doesn't seem like it totally eradicates snoring but my doc said it would nearly eliminate my sleep apnea. It wouldn't cost me anything as I've already met my maximum out-of-pocket this year, so I'm highly considering it.

      @AdamHeard  Год назад

      I wouldn’t count on it completely eradicating your sleep apnea, CPAP is still the best therapy out there. However, for people like myself, who cannot tolerate a CPAP. This has been a good option for me. My snoring has not completely went away, but my wife says that it is much improved.

      I turn it on at bedtime. It times out after 8 hours or I turn it off if I have to get up early. Surgery was outpatient, in and out same day. I took off work the day of surgery(Thursday) and the next day then went back to work on Monday morning.

    Adam,I’ve posted a couple questions and you’ve been very kind to respond. I’ve been ok that I qualify for this surgery. Due to scheduling on the doc and hospitals, I am not having surgery until mid August.
    Given the wait, Im questioning my decision, simply because it involves surgery. Im 68 and in my “4th qtr” and would like to be sure I’m as productive and can enjoy my remaining time here.

      Hey Adam,
      I am having surgery next Friday, December 29th. I am overthinking the crap out of it. Do you feel like you have any reduced breathing issues during the day, and as far as at home during recovery, do you recommend soft foods like soup for a few days. Surgeries don't normally bother or worry me, but for some stupid reason, this one has me questioning myself. I am extremely claustrophobic, so I am not a C-Pap candidate at all, and I absolutely need something because my doctor said my oxygen level is getting so low that my lips are turning blue during my sleep. I know you have said during your videos, but would you recommend this to a family member who is 61 years old?

    Hi Adam I’m having my evaluation this Wednesday. I tried the c-paps but hated them. So I stop using them but what got attention to look at inspire was during my routine endoscopy and colonoscopy the nurse told me i stopped. Breathing a couple of times while on the table and they had to put an oxygen mask on me to finish up. I’m scared of course.

    • @AdamHeard
      @AdamHeard  Год назад

      Anyone who has sleep apnea will have periods of apnea(stopping breathing) when sleeping and especially when sedated and given paralysis t medication such as is used during endoscopy and colonoscopy. Definitely worth taking it over with your doctor to see if inspire could be an option. Cpap is of course best but some people like myself can’t tolerate it. Best of luck!

      Anytime there is an opening made in the skin such as with any surgery, there is a risk for infection. Also, being a registered nurse, I can tell you that is not how cancer works. If it was then anyone who has ever had a bacterial infection would have cancer and we would all be dead by now.

    So I have watched almost all of your videos' and am grateful for your input, but how do you feel now? Meaning the overwhelming exhaustion and no desire to do anything except the bare minimum is life robbing and depressing. There are no words for how bad you can and do feel and function once this apnea curse takes hold of you, robbing you of fun, short term memory, general health and even weight gain simply because you can't do much when apnea rules your life. So where the rubber hits the road is #1 can you function like you did before your apnea started robbing your life.? #2 Do you wake up and feel rested? #3 Hobbies, work, fun and sex life are all affected by apnea. How are these functions? Lastly, how long after it was turned on did you really feel it was helping? Response would be greatly appreciated. I'm having my surgery in 6 days which will also include epiglottis trimming.
