@@slug5237 I'm not super into asian instruments, but it sounds like it could be a xylophone or a variant of it (some sort of melodic percussion instrument). Also, regarding the mix of different styles in the song: don't forget that there's metal elements in it as well.
The battle theme for a single area is better than the boss themes of other games. The Paper Mario series will always be the goat when it comes to music.

I guess the composers were just told to hold nothing back for this game's soundtrack. Holy hell this game's battle tracks are amazing and if it weren't for the Vellumental's battle theme and the Purple Streamer, this would be my favorite in the game. And of course, to say nothing of the awesome bassline this theme has, particularly the lineup version of the theme at 2:45... Excellent theme all around.
Thats the only aspect of this game that wasnt held back by nintendo. The developers were not allowed to create new characters or anyrhing remotely original like the old paper marios. So, they went all out with the music. Oh my, it tells.
SPOILER: When I go back to Autumn Mountain to get all the collectibles and stuff, I’m really gonna miss Bobby following me and getting into trouble in the process 😭

Don’t think a lot of people actually played this game unfortunately, it’s definitely not my favorite Paper Mario but it’s my favorite of the series music-wise. The gameplay was pretty interesting and fun, I’m a sucker for puzzle games so if only they added some standard RPG things like a level up and exp system at the very least…it would have been above Paper Mario 64 imo.
I'm surprised as well. When this game launched, there was a bunch of videos / spread of the soundtrack online, but after a while... I felt bad that I forgot this amazing OST as well. I don't know, a part of me thinks the genius of this soundtrack is how dynamic it is within the game (which is what a game OST should be doing), but it made it really difficult to find mixes (like this video) encapsulating the variations of each song. But I think the more realistic answer is that it wasn't... memorable (hear me out)? Like I think the locations and moments were pretty good, but fighting a stapler? Or rubber bands? When we know this series had Mr. L and Shadow Queen and unique partner (and villain) characters that are STILL talked about to this day? Even though I think this is the best Paper Mario OST to date, it's clear that people attach music to those distinct characters and ultimately want to revisit those memories (hence listening to the OST on RUclips). At least with a majority of this game's cast, there isn't much to "return" to. But perhaps this is just the old fan in me complaining, I'm sure some other people have a completely different perspective, such as "wow, I didn't imagine Mario fighting a stapler would ever happen". I don't know why I wrote so much, but yeah

Then when I continued to Shogun Studios, I got a picture. Let's just say that for anyone out there who hasn't gotten their photo taken in Shogun Studios after defeating the Yellow Streamer, do it. The little easter egg is so heartwarming.

first playthrough of the game was an absolute blast, something about this games makes you constantly want to replay the story , cause the post game doesn't have that same charisma as the story does. really wish there was DLC for this.
