I am back from my long slumber. Expect at least 2-3 more videos in the coming weeks, same time same day. Also my usual plug: Support me on patreon: www.patreon.com/dorkaxe Patrons got to see this video like 2 months early.
This was legit my favourite game as a kid. Something about seeing waves of Greeks and romans getting wrecked by catapult fire was just immensely cool to me!
2 minutes in and this game looks sick. How did I not know this existed when I was a child, I used to love that sort of big battle hack and slash in games like Return of the King/Dynasty Warriors
The only PS2 game I kept from my childhood. I have fond memories of replaying the first level to roleplay being in the big sieges of my total war Rome campaigns. I never could get past the barbarian stages legitimately though. The weird yells were so amusing to me. I wish CA had made this into a series it would have been a nice compliment to their total war series.
Great and underrated game. The gameplay is just so much fun and so visceral. I love the attention to detail in how the Romans really fight behind their big heavy shields. You can feel the weight of those shields when you're fighting them and they block your attacks. Really awesome hidden gem of a game
Seeing this game run at a stable 60fps is pretty wild for its time. The models themselves aren't too detailed but there's a ton going on in these fights. This looks like a game that would have benefited from a coop mode of some sort.
I agree, it's very impressive. I still can't believe it ran as well as it did. A co-op would work for the great action gameplay, however, something I didn't mention was how poor the camera controls/angles were. I initially mentioned it, but removed it since I don't want to pile on for an issue that exists for so many games back then. That and this was their first action third person game, so they did the best they could I guess.
Just found out your YT channel yesterday and i watched already like 4 your reviews and they are all pretty good. I thought you are some around 100k subs channel, then I saw "just" 8,1k subs. U have to grow pretty big soon because the quality of the content is great.
This was by far my favorite game on my GameCube. I loved how cool the armor progression was. Besides age of empires it was this game that made me into the amateur historian I am today and my love for history but ESPECIALLY antiquity and older like the Bronze Age as well. I would play this came over and over and I loved how cool the armor was. I would draw each and every level of armor progression.
@@Dorkaxe Totally agree man. And thanks for reviewing the music which many reviewers always overlook. They are from an era when producers used to use samples of beats & affect & compress them in unique ways. The Legendary Frank Klepaci is the epitome of this. I wish I could join a Dev team which understood that there is a market for these kind of games. I'd love to work on using older equipment for that gritty sound! Simple, dynamic, atmospheric, fast, genre-defiant, & memorable. The use of Drum kits with Choral & orchestral was a stroke of genius.
@@calderarecords It really is good, I actually couldn't believe a game like this opted for such an interesting soundtrack. Do you know of any other games that have something like this?
@@calderarecords Can confirm the samples of beats, I found another song from about the same year which used the same sample library, but this song was in an anime, Ergo Proxy - it was surprising to hear the same instrumental clip used all the way in Japan.
I hear Kotakau is hiring game reviewers...Well Done!!! Not only did you dive into the game play mechanics, but you took the time to enjoy and share the story narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed the review. Congrats...you won a subscriber! SparTAN indeed lol :)
You cover so many of my favorite childhood games. I'm loving this channel. Colosseum: Road to Freedom, LOTR Conquest, Spartan Total Warrior, Battlefront, Two Towers and ROTK. Love it. If I may recommend a game though, Viking: Battle for Asgard is super similar to Spartan: Total Warrior. Creative assembly game, spin-off of the total war series, mythological elements and huge battles.
Love to hear it! Viking is one I may do in the future, the next one up is Shadow of Rome. When I return to these types of games, Viking will likely be next, unless I do that gladiator fighting game. I forget its name. I have a PS2 copy though.
@@Dorkaxe Shadow of Rome is also one of my favorites! I still have my copy and luckily it's still in good condition. I replay it every so often. Looking forward to the video on it. I have the notifications turned on so I'll be there.
Honestly never heard of this but it is so cool to check out old games like this and that they honestly can still look and feel this good! Those voice lines...wow... xD As always I LOVE the in-depth review of all the mechanics and parts of the game, a great review as always! Lol...Spar...Tan... xD
Great review! Glad to see others giving this game a fair shake. PRO TIP: Especially playing on Hard, even though it's very costly on energy, letting a shit-ton of enemies surround you while blocking and bashing when they try some shit, then stoning them with the shield, then doing the radial energy hammer time move, wastes every frozen enemy INSTANTLY.
If I remember correctly on that mission with Archimedes there is supposed to be a second patrol of Romans waiting for you after you sneak by the first one, they along with the Romans you sneaked by would all rush you pretty annoying, but the fire barrels placed there are helpful at least But then again I could be remembering this wrong
I have fond memories of this game. I was sick when I was like 10 and off school for about a week. One of my mates lent this to me while it was still pretty new so I had something to do. I remember it being great but then again I was about 10 and had a fever so it could've been anything.
This was a very fun hack and slash adventure. I must confess, I sometimes ignored the objectives in favor of just slaughtering my enemies, usually in the barbarian camp and the Gates of Jupiter in particular. The former was fun because I got to bash enemies into the flames, lighting them into human torches. It was simple, but fun in much the same way EDF is with its "mindless" fun.
Oh shit I wonder how many other people are just waiting for the right game to be reviewed to finally hit that sub button. Quick, list your other favorite games!
Fun fact for you about the Archimedes bug.Where Archimedes is looking when peaking around the corner there are supposed to be a battalion of Romans and they spot you, alerting the idle Romans behind you basically sandwiching you.On the PS2 this is what happens which I think is what's supposed to happen.
@@Dorkaxe Not ribbing. :) Skarin could have done with a a horse to get around as all that running as a bit tedious, there are leystones for fast travel though.
One of my favorite games. Forget to go over the side game, endless level enemies in the arena feel. Each battle level getting harder and harder. Plus it helps you master how to best kill each one
I won't lie, if the game had been really boring I probably wouldn't have gone through with it. It was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to me, so thanks for the recommendation. Urban Chaos on the PS1 looks interesting as well, so that's a possibility far in the future. Haven't gotten my hands on it yet. Thanks for the support buddy. 👍
@@Dorkaxe THANK YOU SO MUCH! This seriously made my day I haven’t stopped telling people! I’ve waited soooo long! If you go the path Urban Chaos you WILL not be disappointed. I really think it is overdue for them to come back to the console stage with another fun game, this time without such limitations. Please CA if you are reading this.. make it happen. We are all here waiting. Great review though. I love the detail. Agree with everything you say. Soundtrack is KILLER.
I remember playing this when I was a kid on game cube, and my god was it one of the toughest but funnest games I had! Probably only because of my age and not knowing I could change the difficulty I’m sure, also, no RUclips back then to look up videos about the game to help me progress, I think I beat it? I honestly don’t remember 😂 my god tho, I do NOT remember the graphics for these older games being so bad 😅😅 they were so good when we were younger! 🤣 or so we thought, we are spoiled now lmao
If you mean "cranked" to mean it looks too dark, that's my bad gamecube HDMI adapter that I didn't realize was the problem until a few GC videos were finished. This, lord of the rings x2, wario world, and shrek should all be a bit brighter, my videos don't do the dark areas justice.
Awesome game. I replay the hydra & gates of Saturn a bunch on original Xbox. Sega did this game & need to get back to making games if not making a new system if someone will put up the loot.
Seems eerily similar to the concept of God of War considering the release dates. Definitely would have thought it was a clone if not for how close together the dates are.
I personally haven't played the total war games, so if that's not correct I apologize! I was taking their word in an interview they did for spartan in 2005 or so.
This was such a great great GEM OF A GAME, Something PLAY STATION Needs to make again and more games like this games 'GAME PLAY' Feel, so many games are so bland and boring in their game play
