The transition from "ooh I shouldn't do this, people will think I'm weird" to "ooh I shouldn't do this because I want really cool anime eyebrows" is so empowering ❤❤

I have dermatillomania! It sucks so bad, I fully get the struggles with absentmindedly screwing with your hair/skin before you even realise what you're doing. Your hair is looking great.

This is a very brave thing to put online. As a very curly girl (& I'm sure many curly girls can relate), I understand how big of a deal your hair can be in regards to confidence, shame and anxiety around people's perception of you. It's like the #1 thing people notice about you.
Just a note, I love your curly hair! I think if you just straightened your bangs it would look absolutely fairy-like. Would love to see you try to style it like that. ♥️💕🧚

Silly little thankful note - As a teen who has began struggling with trichotillomania, it feels so forbidden to hear it talked about, as if it’s shameful, but it’s strangely comforting to know I’m not alone, and that others have gone thru, n maybe recovered, from it!!

i struggled really severely with Trichotillomania specifically eyebrow and eyelash pulling from grades like 3-7 and was bullied so bad for it. my eyebrows never fully grew back. the shame and embarrassment of being asked “what happened to your eyebrows” was so damaging to little me. but like, kids never understood it was because i’m just like neurodivergent 😭😭😭 finding out as an adult that my trich was very likely tied to that is crazy. it’s so so so comforting to meet other people who struggle with it because it’s such an embarrassing/isolating disorder 🥺

    • @laurenstanley2277

I was told by a counselor that I didn't have trichotillomania because it has to count as severe, as if having no eyebrows doesn't count

I have dermatillomania (the skin-picking version) and I had to keep to reminding myself while watching this video to no pick at my skin. There's a combination of things to solve the issue, it's part just stop doing it but it's also needing to heal the damage I've done and also just getting my skin in a better position so I don't look at my blemishes and pick at them.

man, the amount of time ive lost to trich, i feel like its something that people don't talk about with trich ... im always so aware of this spot i have on the back of my head that's thinning because of my pulling, it sucks, and it's really scared me off from doing anything fun with my hair at ALL, no dying, no fun haircuts, no fun hairstyles. so like, hearing that you struggle with trich while having such fun colorful fucking awesome hair is pretty comforting to see. i dunno, wish u the best ^_^

I am a hairdresser with autism and was recently in a specialist meeting with a trick psychologist due to years Of struggeling with hairpulling from my brows and eyelashes as well (did not end up being «bad» enough for The diagnosis but still struggle lots with symptoms) and I LOVED getting to hear about your experience and getting this representation. I rarely ever see anyone talking about this diagnosis. Also! The hair around your crown and top of head is probably shorter for a multitude of reasons but sun/heat/waterpressure could be some. Getting long healthy shiny hair is such a struggle for anyone that loves to dye it, so just keep using hair masks/cures for damage repair, silk pillowcase and regular trims and try moving The placement Of your scrunchie from time to time would be The best advice I have. For trick The advice i got was mainly to keep my hands busy at all times, when i sm zoning out or relaxing and watching tv shows or whatever i usually go straight to pulling pretty subconciously but if i start knitting or crocheting or Get a fidget toy this might help a lot. And when i Get urges i was told to wrap my hands into fists for as long as The urge is there, and let go once my mind has wandered off. Also k18 is a lifesaver yesyesyes i recommend that stuff to liturally everyone and have my self felt my hair be so much stronger and I feel so much less Of The bleach damage afterwards.

    • @plushdragonteddy

if you need any fidget toy suggestions, i'm an audhd-er myself and i have been absolutely HOOKED on slime recently !! there are so many different textures that are stimulating in different ways, and it's so fun that i'll think to do it as an Activity TM even when there are other things i could do, so it's become a very habitual fidget for me :)

      @laurenreinmuth6439 2 месяца назад

I’m also a hairstylist and agree with much of this. The color you use on your hair is not the cause of the damage, it’s bleaching. Especially when you bleach ur hair at home, it’s difficult to prevent overlapping bleach which causes extra damage.

this was such a wonderful video. I've lived with trich (+ some other body focused repetitive behaviors) & hearing your eyelashes story when you were young just resonated so much. I remember the kid who sat across from me in 6th grade commenting on how id been pulling my eyelashes + brows out for the entire class. It's still such a prominent struggle in my life, so much so that my lashes have never really gotten back to full, & I have so much shame associated with it. It's a cycle that's quite hard to break. The way you spoke about working in a harm reduction lens, & with hope but also acceptance or I suppose sort of rejecting the shame, I felt so kindred with you, & inspired. You do a lot of good. And wow I love the tones of your hair now! It's very very pony, doll hair in the best way. The gradient pieces are like rainbow mist or like diffused through clouds. Love it!!

I have dermatillomania and I’ve always felt like trich sufferers are like my siblings in terms of disorders lol. We have so much in common. They are such shame-filled disorders unfortunately because people think it’s “gross.” I always love hearing people open up about their BFRBs (body focused repetitive behaviors) because the more people talk about it, the easier it gets mentally to cope with it.

This is so relatable. I have struggled with trich since I was in elementary school, and I relate to now obsessively looking at and chopping off split ends, harm reduction by pulling out only the "undesirable" body hair, and the unmatched calming feeling of pulling out hair. There's been chapters in my life where the urge is less and chapters where it's intense. Thank you for talking about this!

Idk if it'd work for you, but I found that wearing press-on nails really helped me... Redirect. Tbf, I do tend to not bite, but pick them short, maybe even delaminate. Then those jagged edges were used for skin picking, so a far thicker and blunter nail end is *chef's kiss*

Oh my, I’ve struggled with Trichotillomania for as long as I remember too. My mom would always brush my hair for me in the mornings before school and wonder about the thinning parts in my hair and I was so ashamed to tell her that I was pulling it out. I didn’t reveal that I did until high school and she just didn’t understand like she basically said “ok then stop???” and ugghhhg it was so frustrating!!

I haven’t watched the video yet but I need to say thank you for this. I’ve been struggling with trich since I had my first big episode in spring 2020, and since then I have never had a full head of hair. I’m honestly doing really well right now, better than I have been in a long time (I credit finally finishing college/uni for that), but my hair is still a wild mix of lengths, and it brings me a lot of shame.
A few minutes in: Holy crap, I have the exact opposite experience with handedness - I always pull with my non-dominant (left) hand because I often do it to stim while I’m doing other things, so my biggest spots are on the left side of my head. But wow, I can’t express how grateful I am for your openness in this video. It’s so comforting to hear someone talk about experiences I know so well but that so few people discuss openly. I doubt you’ve read all of this, but seriously, thank you thank you so so much.

as another person with frizzy curly bleach-treated hair that seems to refuse to grow beyond my shoulders … I relate to the struggle lol. it’s crazy how important my hair has become to my identity and self expression, it doesn’t feel worth giving that up to have healthy hair but man does it being crunchy and frizzy suck!
and as a person with dermatillomania, I resonate with the part about putting in so much work and then the disorder causing you to undo it so much… I’ve worked so hard on improving my acne and skin overall with different creams and treatments and such, but my skin picking is so persistent and intense that I can’t see any progress… it’s frustrating and embarrassing and definitely doesn’t get talked about enough.

I've had trichotillomania for most of my life, too. I'd pull my eyebrows and eyelashes out almost entirely, and then in 6th grade I started pulling my hair from my head. It got so bad that I had random bald patches all over my head. I finally got myself to stop pulling from my head by setting a goal of being able to dye my hair again, and it worked! Only downside being that I just pull from other areas of my body now, but it's better than having to wear hats every day.
Thank you for talking about your experience with this, I've felt so much shame my whole life about having trich, in part because it's not well known and people tend to just think you're weird. Your hair looks fabulous as always, I love the bright rainbow colors on you, they look so nice!

I still struggle with trichotillomania too. mine has always been my eyelashes; I know that my stress levels are through the roof when I am having trich episodes. honest to God, the only thing that keeps me from yanking all of them out sometimes is the fact that I do wear makeup and cosplay on a regular basis. the shame is immeasurable. I am very fixated on my personal appearance (love you, body dysmorphia & gender dysphoria lmfao) so repeatedly damaging myself in such a manner really sends me into a spiral. that same episode of My Strange Addiction ironically made me feel better about it, because up until then, I had no idea why I had this compulsion and thought I too was a complete freak. I am, but not for those reasons! thank you so much for talking about this Pixie. let us all continue to be gorgeous and healing little dinosaurs together.

I deal with hair pulling too!! I'm kind of lucky because the hair on my head is thick and curly so it can cover a lot... until I have to go to the salon and my braider can see some uhhhh wacky lil spots on my skull. 😵‍💫 Actually, braids are a great hack because when they're in, I literally can't get to the hair on my head without ruining the whole style
For bonnets, I specifically like to wear the ones that have long ties attached to them, to make a more custom fit around my head. I get to wrap the ties around my head and make a cute little bow🎀

8:00 I completely get what you mean! I don't have trich but I have dermatillomania (the skin version basically lol) and that satisfying feeling is so real, despite the pain and bleeding and damage it causes, in my brain it's The most satisfying thing😭 I've also struggled with it since I was a child, I remember being like 5 and a doctor saw my fingers and he was like "you need to stop picking your skin or we'll have to cut your hands off" (obviously joking but like...hello?) So i spent a good year or two unable to stop picking my skin and being TERRIFIED I was gonna get my hands cut off 😭😭😭 for me I think it's mainly linked to OCD and adhd and defo gets worse when I'm having a proper mental health Episode but it's a daily thing and it honestly sucks💀 trich sounds hard too, wishing you healing and peace bc this sort of stuff is rough 🩷🫶🏼

Oh god this just opened something in my brain. When I was studying for the university exam I used to absentmindedly pull the hair at the nape of my neck constantly. Once I kept pulling hair while taking a test and after the test when I looked at the floor it was just my hair, that point was scary to me. After that I buzzed off the nape of my neck because I couldn't really pull the smaller strands and slowly it went away. I sometimes still pluck some hairs from the front of my face but not as much... I thought it was just picking stuff... Now I do understand what I have been doing for the longest time... Thank you Pixie for being open about this you made me realize something that I was doing for a really long time...

My hair is so so damaged because I bleach and dye it at home with the cheapest materials I can find because I've had the same issue with people just being straight up mean about your personal style choices. I feel like that's the one job where you can just be mean as shit and nobody calls you unprofessional for it

A tip i have for a hairdresser is to pick a salon in an area you're familiar with and make the appointment in person, so you can understand what the environment will be like. Ask to use the bathroom while ur there so you can have the lay out in mind. Ask for a hairdresser who also works with children. Get a treat afterwards :)

because of this, my shoulders and arms are completely spotted with scars, its too prominent to cover with makeup so i just have to exist as i am and hope for the best. i almost never see anyone like me outside of my family, no one talks about it and not many understand. it affects our lives in all these little ways that sometimes its easy to forget just how impactful it is, like how i have to use dark pillow cases because i pick at my face in my sleep and bleed...

Oh my god.. I have bad trich and have been dealing it with since I was like 9. I’ve been really ashamed of it for a long time, and nothings really seemed to help me long term..Ive never met anyone (in real life at least) who lives with this disorder so it feels really good to see that I’m not alone in this! I personally struggle with absentminded pulling from my scalp. I really want to grow my hair out but the constant pulling and fussing makes it really brittle 😞 Personally, the one thing that sometimes helps is fidgeting with rough textured stim toys!! But sometimes you just dont noticeee!!!! That ur doing it!! And then youve been there for two hours staring at a pile of hair on ur desk like Damn!

I had that same mentality that you have with your curly hair, that I would like it much more if it was longer. But during the pandemic, I stopped straightening it since I wasn't going out and I've been wearing it natural ever since. shrinkage is just a natural part of having curly hair and it's just something that I've accepted.
I think maybe if you started using curly hair products it might help with the way you see your hair. I don't even mean stop straightening it because I used to straighten it, but I would still use hair products meant for curly hair and it would benefit. especially since you dye your hair as I also do and I don't think my hair would've been nearly as healthy when i was still straightening it f it weren't for using products meant for my texture.💕💕💕

The first video of yours I ever watched was you dying your hair (shoutout minty rainbow hair transformation, you were the gateway video😔👊🏻🌈) so this video feels particularly sentimental and nostalgic. You’ve come such a long way since then Pixie and it’s been so lovely to watch it all happen🤍 thank you for always being open and candid and making an effort to reduce as much harm to yourself as you can🤍🌈

I have trich too, specifically for my eyelashes and eyebrows and pulled all eyebrows out as a kid. I've gotten better with it but I still have big gaps in my eyelashes. I just use crazy eyeliner to cover it now 😂
What helped me was finding other places to pluck hair from my face (although yeah it doesn't hit the same) but it's much more manageable now. Also I get my partner to tell me to stop if I ever start doing it subconsciously.
The struggle is real though! Good luck with your hair care journey! ❤it's looking absolutely gorgeous✨✨

I used to pick at my face & side of my head & scalp, i think it was more skin picking till i bleed than hair pulling tho. it got to the point where I just shaved the sides of my head so I stop picking those parts❤ it took a while for the scabs to heal and I have some marks on my fave but ppl don't notice them usually. you're not alone and honestly, not as weird as you think! Super Valid for analyzing everything, figuring out where everything stems from has really helped me cope, I wish you the best, sweetie❤

We have derma and trich too and it can be a huge source of shame for a lot of people, including us in the past. I think when we realised that „hey we’re like this because of *disorder*” instead of „I’m weird and bad and wrong why am I like this” I started to be able to actually get help for those things or replace the urge with something else like a fidget toy. Our therapist says shame cannot live in the limelight, to mean if you talk about the shame then it lessens because you find people like you or that understand and can help. For us as a Bla(c)k person having our hair in protective styles or shaved sides is a huge way to avoid pulling subconsciously, false nails also make it harder. Also dying our hair has really helped both to enjoy looking at ourselves in the mirror (DID & DP/DR double whammy). My strange addiction is such a shitty show that has caused shame for so many people with a variety of disorders or cultural differences. It’s also important to remember in a lot of trich cases the person in sensory seeking. It also sounds like the bonnet you bought may be too small or not properly made, typically they have a flat elastic band. I know this paragraph is kinda jumping around a lot on not very refined but that’s what my thoughts be like.

i don't have trich but i do have dermatillomania and i TOTALLY get what you mean about it being so difficult to overcome even if you're embarrassed by it or have a goal in mind. body focused repetitive behaviors gang :,)
also i definitely have a completely different hair situation to you (i have waist length straight that is also very bleach damaged and broken) and what i do to sleep is put my hair in two long bubble braids! when it was shorter i would do three or four. it really helps so much to prevent tangling and matting, much more than regular braids for me. regular braids would always have chunks fall out overnight because of all the breakage i have and my tossing and turning, but simple bubble braids hold it all together really well, so maybe something similar could help you out now or when your hair gets a bit longer?

Your natural hair is so cute and curly! I have curly hair and it disguises unevenness and thinning, maybe you should try encouraging your curls and if you want it longer, you can curl your extensions with heatless curling rods - looks natural if you manage to match your curl pattern :)

Also watch how the water in the shower hits your hair. I always flip my hair/ head upside down when I wash it. Because shower water hitting the middle of my hair made my hair at the top shorter.

Thanks for being so open about your struggles. Without people on the internet I wouldn’t know a lot of things about myself 😅 I do a lot of skin picking when I’m really anxious. I pick at my scalp and I didn’t notice it for a while and was glad to find resources about this online and with that info I got better at not doing it.

Salon issues are so real. I have half and half dyed hair and the amount of people who gave me sass before I found a permanent hairdresser was insane. Then they'd get bleach on my natural hair because they didn't listen to what I wanted. It's so hard to find a good hairdresser 😢 But I promise they're out there lmaoo

I appreciate you sharing your hair journey, as someone who also struggles with hair growth since a) my roommate gave me a "trim" (she cut it shorter than shoulder length and when I tell you it was giving lord farquaad...😭) and b) bleaching/dying it pink by myself with no prior knowledge. She's a little crispy, crunchy, fried. But this normalized the struggle so much for me and it also gives me hope that the damage can be fixed 🥹💖

I have dermatillomania and have since probably 4th grade. I used to spend hours picking to the point where i would miss out on sleep or not get my homework done. I remember a bunch of guys asking me why i have scabs all over my legs in sixth grade and from that point on i only wore pants. Thankfully it's gotten better (only picking after showers normally now) but having a want for tattoos has helped a lot since i can't get what i want done if my skin's scabby. Its still bad for my shoulders and ugh, the insecurity is real. Also a major thing that helps my picking is having things to hold (fidget toys, small stuffed animals, my phone, even crocheting). Just thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone needs tips ❤
Also also harm reduction wise: after showers I only allow myself to pick at ingrown hairs, which isn't actually fixing the problem or safer or anything, but it helps to limit the amount I pick. I'm slowly limiting where I'm allowed to pick as well (started with "you can't pick your left arm" then added more and more body parts). That's so helpful honestly.

I’ve never been diagnosed with trich or dermatillomania and the compulsions aren’t especially frequent or damaging…but…
I definitely vibe with a lot of the satisfaction/comfort feelings.
I was a nail biter from early childhood to mid 20’s (32 now), which I’ve managed to harm reduce by being quite obsessive and picky once every few weeks when I cut my nails. I did notice an uptick in skin picking and hair plucking after I stopped nail biting, but I never got intense enough to have bald spots or noticeable scarring.
At this point in my life hair plucking is mostly limited to using my fingers to pull out hairs from my eyebrows & lashes that are already basically ready to fall out, sometimes the same thing with my head hair (occasionally I let myself loose with tweezers on my leg hair). I’m trying really hard not to pick my skin, but I have keratosis pilaris and it’s so satisfying to meticulously pull out the little keratin plugs with needle-tip tweezers…

If you have salon issues (which to me is also a death sentence bc of anxiety!) you could maybe get one or two friends together at your place and find a hairdresser that does home visits and trims!
My friend and I started doing that and having someone else there too lightens the dread of having to do small talk to a stranger on my own. plus it’s not a totally strange overwhelming place if you do it at your home or another friends place :)
I went from cutting and dying my hair myself to treating myself to two home visits a year and I’m so looking forward to that head massage while having my hair washed every time it’s the besssstttt
