From my understanding, this is directed at Marcelo, Tarja's husband. He became her manager, and the band laid a lot of blame on him for causing the divide that was created towards the end. From the outside looking in, it appears that he filled her head with ideas like, the band was nothing without her, and she deserved more than they did. Whether or not she actually grew into the diva that's been claimed, and it was because of him, only they know. Her ego may have grown completely without his influence, as has happened so many times with successful musicians/singers. It was certainly very ugly, with a lot of resentment and pain at the end. In the end, everyone survived the fallout, with both Nightwish and Tarja continuing successful careers, so they were both right. She could make it without them, and they could make it without her. While they seem to have left their anger in the past, I don't think Marcelo will ever be on Tuomas' Christmas card list lol
I agree. I put most of the blame with him. He got in her head and created a very negative wedge between the band and her to the point (as I understand it) they couldn't even communicate directly with Tarja... everything had to go through him. No 1 person is bigger than the band. Seems so long ago now. I found Nightwish with the Once album and then End of an Era video then they gave her the letter.
Yea it is. But while it’s true that Tuomas and Marcello clashed it is not true that Tarja was ever a diva. If she were then why so much anger etc when the firing? BC it was pretty much knwn it would be one more album /tour and Tarja wd then go finish her degree in music She isnt a partier and the guys were so there was that separation. But mainly Tuomas wanted to go musically more pop a d she wanted to try solo classical etc. He did it with Sammy too when he wanted a male vocalist and tecruited Marco. And had someone tell his best friend he was out and said he wasnt engaged enough. Ditto the Annette saga. Tarja is loved in Finalnd. Floor is a good friebd and talked to Tarja before takibg the job.and Floor refuses to sing this or Bye Bye Beautiful. Floor fits the vibe now. Most of their great songs were written for and with Tarja as his muse. Emppu and Tarja fine. He just tweeted out her borthday card. Ditto Jukka. She and Floor do FB chats. Marco has apologized, blamed booze and is touring with her. It’s sad that people need to make Tarja a villaness when despite the drama of the end it was really just going in different directions. And this isnt speculation. I have followed NW since abt 2001 when I was 13 and was at End of an Era at 17. I lived iin Finland half time and rest in NYC. Floor is NW now. Its a diff NW. Floor is fantastix at her thing. But Tarja was too starting when NW was five 20 YOs from a village of 1900 and for 10 yrs and 5 albums.
There is no song that shows better how absolutely brilliant Tuomas is than this one. Where many drown in their anger and get stuck in senseless screaming, he manages to channel all the rage in very heavy angry riffs, Jukka killing his drum set, and even letting the keyboard spreak in an angry way. All the rage combined into one helluva piece of music, with spitting vocals from Marko. If someone ever doubted they were angry with Marcelo this should make it crystal clear. I also love how the brass and the choir grow in the end to that very sudden ending. Not only my favorite angry song, the neighbors' also 😂🤘🏼🖤
What I love about this song is that it is pure fury all the way through, and yet Tuomas can't help but express beauty in the midst of pain (just wait until Poet and the Pendulum). The statements of Master Passion Greed themselves and the section coming out of the second statement of those words are these gorgeous, towering chord progressions that give me goosebumps every time.
The pain an anger in this song! It's my go to when I'm feeling angry. So cathartic. One side of the emotions running through the group at this time. Poet and the Pendulum is another.
This album is about dealing with Tarja and especially her not really nice husband Marcello. You can hear the rage and anger ofcourse. The guys are really devoted and motivated mucisians, but Marcello stood in the way EVERYWHERE. Tarja did no rehearse anymore, was not allowed to be in the same bus as the rest of the group, during tours and Marcello told Tarja NOT to perform with Nightwish in the USA, because the small venues were not proffitable. Where you saw in "learn the setlist in 48 ours" the rest of the band was not about the money but reaching their fans, even in the USA where they were unknown for a long time (and still are not known by many metalheads) It must have hurted as hell too, because Emppu, Tuomas and Tarja were friends sinds their childhood. There is some funny and nice footage on youtube, where they just started Nightwish. Extremely young, 17 years and all short hair😆 They shared so much with Tarja in the past.. And than the media frency, the HUGE backlash from fans, so called "frends of the band", the Media and even Finnish politicians (the Prime minister, dang) when they decided not to continue with Tarja (for a big part due to Marcello) and wrote an open letter. I think they regret that a lot, especially Tuomas. It's been said that especially Marko was totally fed up with her and Marcello, like the others but more intens. In the end Tuomas, as the person he is, took full responsability and blame to protect the other bandmembers.....and that's where the Poet and Pendulum comes in. Now you are certainly ready, knowing the story behind it. Please don't listen to weird people who claim Tuomas was in love with Tarja, that's complete BS. They knew eachother already for 17 years and she was more family, like a sister to him. Anette was a big mistake as vocalist. She was 1. not capable to perform the songs live 2. she was not reliable on tours canceling several shows, walked away crying from stage several times (she was divorced and still was dealing with that). In the end she just did not want to tour anymore, because of her son. While she was ALL about touring in the beginning and being not really nice about Tarja. I know some people love her, but the interviews she gave about Nightwish are everything but nice to be honest. With Floor they hit bullseye. I think it saved Nightwish AND Floor. I think it was ment to be❤
The heaviest, angriest song in the Nightwish canon. Its a long, bitter, messy story, but the anger is directed at Tarjas husband Marcello, who the band blamed for alot of the interpersonal problems between the band and Tarja leading to her being sacked - theres alot more to that and it all gets ugly, messy and complicated, but thats basically the gist. This, along with poet and the pendulum (the same album), was Tuomas venting a whole load of rage and hurt, and its a song that has never been and will never be played live. I love the song for the music and Markos vocals (both amazing), but lyrically i do find i only listen to it occasionally. You will find out the whole history of what happened around Tarja being fired when you get to Poet and the pendulum 🙂
The cathartic Holy Trinity of the Dark Passion Play album : The Poet & the Pendulum => Tuomas (his feelings and depression when all the shitshow from Tarja's firing unfolded in 2005 and 2006). Bye Bye Beautiful => Tarja (the chorus sung by Marco is basically Tuomas telling Tarja what he thinks). Master Passion Greed => Marcelo (Tarja's husband and manager, the four boys going 200% angry and pissed off at him since he is apparently the culprit of the break up with Tarja).
Poet-Tuomas distress . Bye bye beautiful-sadness, rather than hatred at Tarja’s ‘betrayal’. Master passion greed-absolute vitriol aimed at Mr Tarja. Although Poet is probably the magnum opus of Tuomas’ career, none of these will be played again. Tuomas has moved on. Thank you for a rare reaction to this track. Read up on the departure of Tarja, and the ‘Tarja leaving trilogy’ makes sense.
@@Garbox80 that’s my understanding . The track itself is aimed at Tarja. But the video is Tuomas in effect saying, if you think I picked the singer for her looks then the whole band should be beauties.
This is for Marcello, the husband. They were not stupid, they knew he was behind the change in attitude with Targa. The lust for money, the priority change to her solo career.
That's what happens when Tuomas is pissed off, hurt and angry - aimed squarely at Tarja's husband Marcello who the band felt was behind the change in Tarja. Not question in my mind that you are a full member of the Nightwish Army already 🤘
It's nowhere near just the band's feelings... The author (and the publishing company) of the Nightwish biography were sued by Marcello for how horribly he comes off in that - but the author and company stood behind it, were "threatening" to bring up lots of sources, and in the end, the court dismissed the accusation. Whether things would have developed in the direction that they did _without_ him is a good question, but he certainly made things a lot more ugly and dirty...
Angry Nightwish is just as amazing as positive Nightwish. The line that really gets me is that they are ashamed they kept quiet while her husband manipulated her and changed the great dynamic they always had in the band before him. We see that so often when people don't want to get involved but think there might be an abusive or toxic relationship happening. People keep quiet and sometimes the relationship ends up in the death of one, which I think they allude to in the shouted section - they were worried his controlling would get worse for her. I don't like that people got so mad at the guys & Tuomas though; she had announced she was leaving the band already in a year or so, had focused on her solo stuff and was not showing up to rehearse for the tour. Why would they want to make another album with her when she was leaving and things were so toxic. The split had to happen before they did the next album from a business side, and the constant negativity had to end for all of them on the personal side. They knew her hubby would try to spin it so did the open letter.
This song is one of the Tarja departure Trilogy. The other two are"The poet and the pendulum" and "Bye bye beautiful".These three are very different from each other, yet awesome in their own way. "The poet and the pendulum" is an epic symphony "Master passion greed" is thrash metal "Bye bye beautiful" is kind of like a pop-rock song. Nightwish - Master Passion Greed, never performed live and never will. This song is written by pure anger and hate (towards Tarja's husband / manager), and Tuomas said that : I am not this kind of person anymore, and therefore this song will never be performed live. It's really a relatively violent song for Nightwish. Tuomas pretty much blames Tarja's husband for everything, on and off the mic, that happened to Tarja, and this song's making it perfectly clear -exactly- where he stands, while still being poetic. A good combination with "Bye Bye Beautiful". One as a final word, a final goodbye, and one as a screaming "F**k you" to the sky. NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.
As a kid, did you ever throw a mud-laden snowball at a childhood enemy? I'm kinda thinking this was the whole bad mud-pie in the face of Tarja's husband. ... I may have the intended target wrong, but that's the story I've heard.
Think I know what your next reaction will be 😍 (the best song NW/Floor released) And I know you will do your homework (AAMOF, this song is part of the homework...)
This is " love letter" to Marcello, the husband of Tarja..But, they never play it live. And after so many years, the angry from Tuomas and the Band is over and out.
The guys in the band did not hold Tarja's new husband (Marcela) and manager, who they believe was the cause of turning Tarja away from the band, and focused her on getting more and more money.

Welcome to pissed off Tuomas.
This was directed towards Tarja's husband. Its said he was a very controlling person when it came to telling the band what he wants for Tarja.
Brutal 🤘
I Like 😆
I actually have this song as the ringtone on my phone! Stay safe 🤘 ✌️
"With awaking the tears will begin. To my everlasting shame silence took me." The end of MPG will lead you to TPATP, the holy grail of NW-songs :D
Never heard of Poet being referred to as the holy grail, but that sums it up perfectly.

Already done however its over on the other channel 3-4 months ago.
Its on its way on this channel
Decided to do it again. Because i didnt really absorb it.
Great song xx
Tarja's husband Marcello (= male Yoko Ono) earned own Nightwish song.
I think Tuomas was a little pissed off when he wrote this. Great reaction!🎸🤘
