Basketball kinda relates, someone jumps into you, it's somehow blocking even though you just stand there and let yourself get runover and you get called for the foul
When you hit, your foot will lift up right? Then after you hit ,the lifted foot should step in the box. Then you can run to first. Sorry I am not good at English.
You can see he lifted up his right foot before he hit the ball,so his right foot should be inside the box after hitting. Then his left foot can step out the box
Ghostdialoog the Cueto call makes absolutely no sense. The batter rules the box, it's unquestionable. Although once contact is made, the batter has a certain amount of time to run before interference is called. Since Cueto was in the box when he bunted, there is no way he could've gotten out of the way of the ball. Tough luck for the catcher but it is his problem not Cueto.
I dont personally understand how its the batters fault that the catcher runs into him because he isnt looking what hes doing or hes blindly rushing forward. The guys dont even finish their swing and the catcher is already trying to bulldoze past them and its somehow their fault because they "got in the way"
Pixel Spy You have to leave the hitters box on the correct side plus you can't be out of the batters box if you make contact with the ball bunt or swing.
I don't think you guys understand, interference doesn't depend on whether it was accidental or not. It doesn't matter if the batter can't control the backswing fully, it's still interference.
i dont understand how quite a few of the batters were called for interference. they arent aware of where the ball is and their momentum is unavoidable. didnt seem like it was willful.
A lot of times when I watch videos on specific calls (balk, strikeouts, etc.) you can kind of see a trend/pattern and get why the umpire would make the call that they made. With this video it is hard to understand almost half of these interference calls.
Josh Hill I'll agree that the calls are bad but because (at least from my experience playing ball) catcher is one of the least appreciated positions. Everyone lost their minds when home plate collisions got removed but hey. But an offense shouldn't have to be flagrant or overly obvious to be called. But again, I do agree with you.
I feel like justice is being served to all the MLB hitters with absurdly dramatic swings. The one handed backswing is something I especially cannot tolerate.
and, regardless of being an Indians fan, how was he "out of the batters box" at 1:10 when he bunted that? he was clearly IN the box. you have to have both feet WITHIN the box when you hit the ball, meaning one foot cant be on the ground outside of the box when you make contact. he had a foot up, but it was still in the box. so I don't get it.
Its always amazing how the announcers dont understand the rules. On batter interference (except on one unusual instance), it is the batter who is out, not the runner.
I honestly don't see how you can call someone out for running straight down the first baseline and the catcher or pitcher hits them in the back with the ball! How is that the runners fault???
That's a myth, the rule says he has to attempt to get out of the way, he can't just stand in front of the catcher if the catcher is trying to make a play. Rule 6.01 (a) (10).
Manny Machado had a real issue with doing this in the past, I'm glad that he's corrected that. Now if he can just give us a hometown discount when the time comes, that'd be greaaaaat.
Doge Adventures it's called taking advantage of the rules. The rules are there for both sides, use them to your advantage. Or, the runners could avoid the situations by complying to the rules.
They got that call correct. He was running outside of the running lane (those 2 white lines going towards first base) and was hit with the ball. Pretty clear interference.
Dan Bev You see that from coaches at the high school level too. Had multiple sub varsity coaches that needed a lesson on the high school football rulebook this year during games... There's too many people in this world who think they're experts just because they sit on their asses watching on the weekends.
yeah as a catcher you get taught to sell it a bit, some of these were clearly not interference. BTW getting hit by a thrown ball is a live ball and not in any way an interference call unless you deliberately block the ball.
how the hell is the one at 0:24 interference on the batters part? he was literally in his backswing and the catcher jumped up and bumped into him...... insta-out. how?
I'm not an expert by any means, but some of these seem like bull crap. You can't expect hitters to jump out of the way all the time, and you can't expect them to be able to tell where their bat's backswing will be
You learn at the Little League level that running from home to first is done outside the base path. It's at that same level where you learn to run toward first as soon as you make contact with the ball. If any of the "dumb outs" are covered in what I just said, then it is you who needs to learn what Little Leaguers already know.
Eric, There are a lot of things the batter can do. What he can't do is interfere with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. He needs to get out of the catcher's way. Here is the rule that covers this play; 6.01(b) (7.11) Fielder Right of Way The players, coaches or any member of a team at bat shall vacate any space (including both dugouts or bullpens) needed by a fielder who is attempting to field a batted or thrown ball. If a member of the team at bat (other than a runner) hinders a fielder’s attempt to catch or field a batted ball, the ball is dead, the batter is declared out and all runners return to the bases occupied at the time of the pitch.
Chris Campbell the batter should have been running up the line instead of meandering around watching the ball. The catcher was watching the ball to try and make a play on it and didn't know the batter was standing there.
If the catcher gets hit by a bat then he's clearly far too close to the batter and it should be HIM getting called for interference on the batter! Do these people not understand how the human body works in relation to momentum and physics? If you swing a bat with that much energy, you can't just stop the motion mid-swing ... well, not without doing some serious damage to yourself or completely letting go of the bat.
OK someone help me out here. I've read the whole interference rule of the 2016 rules and it doesn't mention interference with a throw. It mentions interfering with a batted ball and interfering with the fielding of a ball, but not with the throwing of the ball. Is you take the first examples in this video of runners being called out for blocking the catcher's throw, is there any rule against this? I can't find one. I'm looking for the actual written rule in the rulebook, so please give me a rule to look up, thanks.
So it goes with rule 6.03(a)3. That rule states: "A batter is out for illegal action when...He interferes with the catcher's fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter's box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher's play at home base."
No it does not. A common offensive interference is a runner running into a fielder that comes into the baseline to field a ball. The runner generally doesn't intend to run into the fielder but that is still textbook interference.
Nah it makes total sense. The bat can reasonably be said to interfere with the catcher’s throw. I don’t think it matters on the degree of interference. In other words, a tap on the back via backswing counts as much as waving the bat in front of the catcher’s throwing arm. Both interfere with his reasonable ability to make the play.
Whoever gave this rule the go ahead has no idea how back swing works. If the catcher jumps forward and touches the bat, it's his problem, he has far more control of movement than the batter at the end of a swing. Any catcher can throw to second and intentionally hit the bat to get the out. Stupid rule.
TheNukeMan, The batter left the box and his momentum took him out over the plate. The catcher moved straight forward to make a play and the batter interfered with the catcher. Textbook interference. Absolutely the correct call.
Sort of a murky rule. Like, I'm a Yankees fan, but in the third one with Papi in it he didn't leave the box at all. He just swung...Don't get how he can be penalized for that.
3:56 what the fuck could the batter do? I should be a catcher in the MLB, since apparently I can just run myself into batters and claim they are in the way to get easy outs
This is a stupid rule when it comes to bunting and trying to stop a runner from stealing a base, its all base upon someone not knowing if its fair or foul and someone not being able to stop momentum
there were quite a few questionable calls here. I feel like when there's a lot of commotion in the batters box, and the catcher throws it away, the umpire is more likely to call them for interference...even if they stayed in the box the whole time.
I can't find the rule in the rulebook covering throws by the catcher (or indeed any fielder). I thought interference had to be wilful and if accidental not an interference call.
Martin - I answered the throws by the catcher in your first comment earlier, and in regards to the "willful" comment, the phrase "willfully and deliberately" only applies to breaking up a double play in rules 6.01(1)6 & 7. There is a comment at the end of rule 6.01(a) that states "A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not." So I'm not sure what play you are exactly referencing but interference does not have to be willful.
the umpire thought the batted ball hit him after he was out of the box; that's surely what it looked like from his perspective, but it appears he was mistaken.
That is why it is called "batter interference." The intent does not matter. A batter should be trained and should know the rules. If he/she breaks them, hence the penalty. It is much like in a football game if a lineman in a 3 point stance slips and falls forward in the neutral zone before the ball is snapped. He could not control himself, but a penalty will be assessed.
Interesting, so are they trained to move a certain way? Because I could assume the catcher could just throw the ball into the hitter and claim it was interference.
With less than two outs, they are supposed to go to the dugout and sit down because they committed interference. With two outs, they are supposed to get their glove and and take their defensive position because they committed interference.
This sums up perfectly why Baseball hasn't made it as a world sport (Japan & US doesnt put it on the same stage as football or rugby for eg). Some of the rules & the implementation are pathetic. Being out for standing still and trying to see if the ball is fair? Mental.
:29 is all i need to see to know baseball needs to change batter interference rules. Either that or coach's need to start teaching batting technique like this: stand straight up like a toothpick and only use your arms to gently waft at the ball.
So I guess you can just hit runners with a ball and they're out now? And also if a batter hits the ball and starts running and happens to run into the ball or a player trying to field the ball, it's interference?
For an education, there are 2 lines the last half of the first base line. If a runner runs outside of those 2 lines (either in foul territory or fair territory), and there is a play at first base, and doing so interferes with a fielder receiving a throw (aka gets hit with the ball) or fielding a ball, that is interference. Also, yes a batter running into a player trying to field a ball or running into the ball in fair territory, even by accident, is interference. Have you played or watched baseball past tee-ball? I learned those rules when I was like 8.
One of the worst rules in baseball....well actually probably the worst interpreted rules by the umpires, on few occasions are there actual interference, if a batter swings and the swing takes him towards the other batters box then at least in my mind that's not intentional interference....and in the cases where the batter stays in his box and still gets called for interference then that's on the catcher not the batter
when a batter has hit the ball fair and square and is running to first base but gets hit by the ball why call the batter out? the outfielders or back catchers were the ones who didn't know how throw around the runner.
As you can see there are 2 lines the last half of the first base line. When running to first on a fair ball, the runner must run between those 2 lines. If the runner is hit with a thrown ball while running and he is not in between those 2 lines, he will be called out for interference.
baseball, the only sport where an opposing player can intentionally run into you while you're standing still and you're the one who's called for interference.....
How can they call the batter out for swinging and making contact with the catcher who is clearly standing up and getting in the way. If anything it should be interference on the catcher for getting in the way of the bat. So you're suppose to just stop with your swing half way thru? How's that even possible? This is one reason why I stopped watching baseball
Baseball: the only sport where you can stand still and be called for interference
TheCandyVanCan Lol true
Basketball kinda relates, someone jumps into you, it's somehow blocking even though you just stand there and let yourself get runover and you get called for the foul
Glasterz not true if you are full set(still) then it's a charge. If you even slightly move before the contact it's a blocking foul
*fully
ok, barely moving... what difference... fucking basketball rules make offensive players look like pussies
0:59 no he's in the box when he makes contact, and the ball doesn't touch him either. Umpire just blew it.
擊球後腳不能完整地踏出打擊區
You can't step out the box with your whole foot after contaction
stanly Wu oh really? how would the runner run to first?
When you hit, your foot will lift up right?
Then after you hit ,the lifted foot should step in the box.
Then you can run to first.
Sorry I am not good at English.
Oh,I mean "when" you hit the ball, your both feet sould be inside the box
You can see he lifted up his right foot before he hit the ball,so his right foot should be inside the box after hitting. Then his left foot can step out the box
Some of these make no sense.
They all make sense.

Sigh Phi Guy I was told to run at the glove and try to block the throw as a runner haha!
Sigh Phi Guy whether it's intentional or not, they're still interfering.
Yes. Intent isn't involved here
J, that wasn't necessary. Ok, like in the NFL..? Pass interference is still a penalty, intentional or not.
Doesn't have to be willful. They were in the way.
A lot of times when I watch videos on specific calls (balk, strikeouts, etc.) you can kind of see a trend/pattern and get why the umpire would make the call that they made. With this video it is hard to understand almost half of these interference calls.
One of my absolute favorite rules and this is one of my favorite videos. Good job!
it's one of your favorite rules? maybe within reason it's a good rule but some of these calls are complete shit.
+Jack Petry I'm from stl so we very much appreciate our catcher Yadi Molina!
Jack Petry they should send him back to first
Most of these calls are complete bullshit
I feel like justice is being served to all the MLB hitters with absurdly dramatic swings. The one handed backswing is something I especially cannot tolerate.

Its always amazing how the announcers dont understand the rules. On batter interference (except on one unusual instance), it is the batter who is out, not the runner.
Running out of the baseline to avoid a tag is not batter's interference. And a few of these catchers were good actors.
4:46 what? hes literally running on the line LOL
No Stephan, his left foot is completely out of the running lane for several steps before the base, Good Call.
I honestly don't see how you can call someone out for running straight down the first baseline and the catcher or pitcher hits them in the back with the ball! How is that the runners fault???
Because the runners left foot is inside the baseline...
Ask Trea Turner
So if a batter is in the batters box, and the catcher runs into him, thats interference on the batter???
yes the batter is suppose to get out the box
Tyreke Montgomery Its thr batters area, he doesnt have to move out of the way if hes still in it.
+Tyreke Montgomery but not if getting out of the box is getting in the catcher's way
That's a myth, the rule says he has to attempt to get out of the way, he can't just stand in front of the catcher if the catcher is trying to make a play. Rule 6.01 (a) (10).
Funny you should say that... no.
2:40 looks like the catcher thought he was playing basketball and flopped after he ran away from the fouled pop-up and into the batter.
i feel bad that some of this video had to do something about the red sox.
You've got a combination of batter's interference and running out of the baseline.
Manny Machado had a real issue with doing this in the past, I'm glad that he's corrected that. Now if he can just give us a hometown discount when the time comes, that'd be greaaaaat.
The catchers are purposely running into the batters and throwing balls at runner. Baseball need a major rule change
Doge Adventures it's called taking advantage of the rules. The rules are there for both sides, use them to your advantage. Or, the runners could avoid the situations by complying to the rules.
A lot of these are dumb but i think we can all agree that the throw at 5:00 is just beautiful
Jose Reyes shouldn't have been called out he wasn't even close to out of the basepath
They got that call correct. He was running outside of the running lane (those 2 white lines going towards first base) and was hit with the ball. Pretty clear interference.
These are the idiots yelling at umpires at High School and MLB games. People confidently yelling statements that are 100 percent INcorrect.
Dan Bev You see that from coaches at the high school level too. Had multiple sub varsity coaches that needed a lesson on the high school football rulebook this year during games...
There's too many people in this world who think they're experts just because they sit on their asses watching on the weekends.

As an Angels fan, we never get first base line interference calls our way
0:24 Haha, that was like a fucking dive man.. Dude purposely ran into the batter.
That Baltimore catcher took a dive, pud.
I'm not an expert by any means, but some of these seem like bull crap. You can't expect hitters to jump out of the way all the time, and you can't expect them to be able to tell where their bat's backswing will be

Cavey Boi I
Most are bs
2:50 are you kidding me?
Eric, The batter interfered with a defensive player attempting to field a batted ball. Easy call. Easy out.
Alan Hess the batter stood there😂 what else is he supposed to do
Eric, There are a lot of things the batter can do. What he can't do is interfere with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. He needs to get out of the catcher's way.

4:57 that curve though
So many of these are Bos. & Det. 😂
David Ortiz one doesn't make sense his swing been like that FOR YEARS!
If it hits the catcher while he is attempting to make a play, that’s interference...
3:30 with a good throw like that did the batter really interfere?
At 2:41 AJ Ellis runs into the back of the batter. Why is this interference? (Honestly don't know)
Chris Campbell the batter should have been running up the line instead of meandering around watching the ball. The catcher was watching the ball to try and make a play on it and didn't know the batter was standing there.
Of course the batter gets called out for interference because the catcher bolted directly into them without looking
If the catcher gets hit by a bat then he's clearly far too close to the batter and it should be HIM getting called for interference on the batter! Do these people not understand how the human body works in relation to momentum and physics? If you swing a bat with that much energy, you can't just stop the motion mid-swing ... well, not without doing some serious damage to yourself or completely letting go of the bat.
nice video
Crazy that the catcher can come inside the batter's swing circle and it's the batter's fault.
Bizarro.
OK someone help me out here. I've read the whole interference rule of the 2016 rules and it doesn't mention interference with a throw. +Ryan Altfillisch That's dumb imo
HermZ What's dumb?
2:39, that one's actually interference.
As are pretty much the rest of them, hence the name of the video...
sometimes as a batter you just dont know how to get out of the way,, especially on a passed ball.. I hate this rule
Around 4:05 he bunts the ball and almost gets fucking tackled by the catcher who is running THROUGH THE BATTERS BOX
Kyle Miller that's because the batter instead of running decided to stand in the middle of the field like a deer in a headlight.
most of the ones where they hit the catcher in the back swing are kinda questionable
Chris Mancini can't interfere with the catcher in any way. You can't stand in front of him or hit him with the bat.
0:59 how was this interference lol
What about A-Rod in the 2004 ALCS when he slapped the ball out of Bronson Arroyos glove
The umpires got together and made the right call. A-Rod intentionally hit the ball out of Arroyo's glove and was called out.
you should name it runners interference because most of these are runners interferring or a plain stupid call
What will be the interference of the better?
Where is alex rodriguez?
Whoever gave this rule the go ahead has no idea how back swing works. If the catcher jumps forward and touches the bat, it's his problem, he has far more control of movement than the batter at the end of a swing.
Any catcher can throw to second and intentionally hit the bat to get the out. Stupid rule.
Where is a-rods interference
我不了解為甚麼有人會認為這是不合理規定
為了比賽能夠公正順暢地進行
這些規則是絕對必要的
they should at least make the runner go back instead of calling runner out
You know there was interference during the 2015 WS, right? Zobrist?
This is why I can't stand when hitters crowd the plate, because they interfere with the catcher trying to throw out the runner
0:44 that is absolute bullshit. That guy clearly tried to duck and get out of the way, and as an Indians fan, that was the catchers fault
TheNukeMan, The batter left the box and his momentum took him out over the plate. The catcher moved straight forward to make a play and the batter interfered with the catcher. Textbook interference. Absolutely the correct call.
Goodness these umpires... The runners over half the time can't help what is happening
Can anyone clarify why almonte was out?? He looked inside the batters box to me
Sort of a murky rule.
Looked to me like a fair batted ball. The batter should have gotten out of the way of a fielder attempting to make a play. Out is the correct call.
You can't help a lot of these situations...
Reyes was not outside the Baseline
wow 1:10 was a terrible call by the ump
You ain't slick
This is a stupid rule when it comes to bunting and trying to stop a runner from stealing a base, its all base upon someone not knowing if its fair or foul and someone not being able to stop momentum
Anyone know the batter's rights while in the box? Some of those plays looked unavoidable.
there were quite a few questionable calls here.
It's a difference between runner's and batter's interference.
I thought flopping was only in basketball lol
So it's the batters fault if the catcher runs into them even though they still haven't finished their swing.
Can someone please explain how at 1:10 the batter was out of the box?
the umpire thought the batted ball hit him after he was out of the box; that's surely what it looked like from his perspective, but it appears he was mistaken.
So I don't understand.. what are the batters suppose to do if they can't get out of the way?

Interesting, so are they trained to move a certain way? Because I could assume the catcher could just throw the ball into the hitter and claim it was interference.
With less than two outs, they are supposed to go to the dugout and sit down because they committed interference. With two outs, they are supposed to get their glove and and take their defensive position because they committed interference.
Some looks like they are blown calls or the defenders intentionally ran into the batter and there fore interference.
Its the fact that the runner is OFF the running line.. check the vid again.
@@BloodoperaBlackvomitThis guy was spot on running right over the baseline how is he out? 1:50
Albert was also catchers interference
Running in line nonsense rulings!!!!??
Okay ump if you lean over
Or lift your foot Are you out of the box? What if the catcher leans into the box or batter? Get it right Ump!!!
That guy during 4:05. Wtf is that. He was in the batters box and the catcher ran into him
The batter made contact so he should have been running not staring at the ball.
2:52 Batter interference? He was in the batter's box.
It's a batted ball. The batter interfered with a defensive player attempting a play on the ball. Batter's box has nothing to do with this play.
This sums up perfectly why Baseball hasn't made it as a world sport (Japan & US doesnt put it on the same stage as football or rugby for eg). Some of the rules & the implementation are pathetic. Being out for standing still and trying to see if the ball is fair? Mental.
Baseballs version of flopping.
2:53 is that catcher interference or because the batter didn't move
The batter interfered with a defensive player attempting to field a batted ball. Easy call. Easy out.
Why is Detroit in every other clip
Why should The runner get punished for something he’s not even involve with
That’s how baseball works, ever heard of a fielders choice?
:29 is all i need to see to know baseball needs to change batter interference rules. Either that or coach's need to start teaching batting technique like this: stand straight up like a toothpick and only use your arms to gently waft at the ball.

Why don't catchers just stand up behind batters as they finish their swing and get brushed in the head by the bat on every attempted steal?
dear god the flops that some of these catches have is ridiculous! please tell me they get penalized for it like in the NBA
Fucking moron, it’s not called intentional interference for a reason...it doesn’t need to be intentional...
when a batter has hit the ball fair and square and is running to first base but gets hit by the ball why call the batter out? the outfielders or back catchers were the ones who didn't know how throw around the runner.
As you can see there are 2 lines the last half of the first base line. When running to first on a fair ball, the runner must run between those 2 lines. If the runner is hit with a thrown ball while running and he is not in between those 2 lines, he will be called out for interference.
Devin Smith you're not allowed to run on the inside part of the field.
Devin Smith, Please don't ever use the term "back catcher". There is no such thing.
Some of these guys need to work on their timing with their acting lol
baseball, the only sport where an opposing player can intentionally run into you while you're standing still and you're the one who's called for interference.....
You aren't supposed to stand still after hitting the ball.
How does interference get called on for interference when they run the base line and he ball is there too. What are they supposed to do?!
They are permitted to run out of the lane to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball.
@@alanhess9306 I'd say they are _required_ to run out of the lane to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball
@@davej3781 Yes, that is true.
IMO, a few silly calls here. Not the batters fault the catcher hit him with the ball on the way to first. Throw the damn catcher out, ump!
How the hell is it the batter's fault because the catcher decided to stand up in the middle of his swing? -_-
This is one of the many reasons i just CANNOT watch Baseball anymore.
Look up how many of there's are on the bater BOx? Because if yup lifte you
👌
2:01 that's bs what's the runner gonna do stop running and get out
WAO CASI CASI UN POCO MAS Y YA
I think the calls where the backswing was interference is stupid
Because you don't know the reason for the rule does not make it a stupid rule.
I played catcher, backswings is a hazard of the position, but I played 20 years ago in highschool and sports are being pussyfied today
